spots. so here it's cold. >> the good news is we're knott as freezing today. >> yeah, we're not. it's not as bad. even though the north bay, napa area still at about 36, but hayward, san jose in the 40s. san francisco has been one of the warmest spots all week long, but even yesterday san francisco was in the lower 40s at one point. palo alto at 38. i do want to remind folks we are under a spare the air alert today. tomorrow no wood burning, even though it's cold, i know it will be tough, if you have a fireplace, you may be tempted, but no wood burning is allowed. that air quality remains unhealthy for the north bay. but look at 11:00 they'll eventually climb into the 50s. we'll cece some of those high clouds into the afternoon. i'll bring you an update on the chance of rain for possibly

christmas day. we've have to stay tuned. vianey, thank you. one person was shot during a concert at a bay area bowling alley. it happened at x bar inside homestead bar in cupertino. a group of rappers were performing in the packed bar. witnesses say a group of people entered and began throwing chairs and shooting. one witness and his girlfriend ran to hide in the bathroom as shots ricocheted. >> when the gunshots slowed do you want, me and my girl came out of the bathroom. we were running to the back door, and we saw with a guy with white shoes all bloody and stuff. >> police say somehow only one person was shot and taken to the hospital. as of this morning police have nod reported any arrests. now to a former marine in federal custody accused of

planning a terror plot at one of the most popular crowded spots in the bay air. everitt jameson stands accused of planning an attack at pier 39. he liked some isis posts on facebook, a move that put federal authorities on alert. undercover fbi agents then communicated with jameson for months. according to court documents, he told agents he started pier 39 because he knew it was a crowded place where he could kill people. he worked for a tow agent and said he could use his tow trust or his sharpshooter training to commit violence. he told the agent he would use explosives to funnel people into one location, where he could then shoot and inflict more injuries. jameson told the agent christmas would be the perfect day to attack and he himself was

prepared to die. federal agents served a search warrant at hi modesto home endand arrested him yesterday. people were shocked to learn of the news. >> very shocking, very scary. >> you know, the las vegas incident and many other incidents, i'm glad they're vigilant. >> during the search of jameson's home, agents found a last will and testament written in november, three firearms, 13 rounds of ammunition. he's set for a detention hearing in federal court next week. after speaking with some of the people close to im, "today in the bay's" tom jensen went to the modesto home where jameson lived with his meter, the same home that federal agents raided on wednesday.

according to police four men walked into the mission jewelry & loan pawnshop. one witness said she could here the gun shots at her taco shop across the street. she said she started to hearing some noise, heard the gunshots and she got real nervous. a neighborhood resident ran into the clothing store and told him about what happened. >> he said there was a gunshot next door, call the police. i came out and i see two guys running toward 19th street. >> reporter: police have not said if the robbers made off with any cash or merchandise. anand says three shots were fired and the shop owner's son was roughed up. he's known the family for years. >> this goes ridiculous. it's not right. he's a hell of a nice guy. >> reporter: he said he was able to talk with his friend as he was loaded into the ambulance.

but not as cold as what we've been waking to automatic week long. 35 degrees, napa 36, oakland 44, hayward 44, san jose 41. we are slightly warmer, in fact initially warmer in some spots. so about an hour ago we were close to 11 degrees, and napa at about 4 degrees, if you notice we've got some hazy skies, some lingers clouds in the air quality forecast, wee still keep that spare the air alert in place. we've got that system of high pressure that travels all the pollutants down to the ground. no wood burning, in fact it's illegal, so i know it will be tempts today, especially tomorrow, but we are expecting

the alert to stay in place tomorrow too. on the cooler side, france 55, oakland 57, more than likely we'll top out at about 58, 59 degrees. let's talk about that chance of rain that i had teased a second ago for christmas day. here it is. that's snow in the sierra, that's a kind of weaker cold front that we've been monitors, but it's very week. this frontal system if i speed this up ahead, on sunday december 24th, it does inch closer to the bay area, but only for the far north bay, so it's not going to be widespread, not going to be a soggy christmas, but the north bay may wake up -- the sierra snow is looking pretty good. if you're going to lake a tahoe today or tomorrow, it's going to

be your best bet, because come tomorrow we'll be dealing with some slick roads. if i fast forward this through monday, it just completely moves out, clears out completely on actual christmas day. we're talking about the rain chances late christmas each into really early christmas morning. and a high pressure system bringing that dryness back. upper 50s, we've got the chance of showers far off to the north and christmas eve into early christmas morning, we're going to keep that into place. tomorrow 57 degrees, it might be more cloudy tomorrow, but we are expecting to be dry for the majority of the day then we should be okay. >> it looks good, vianey. still ahead on "today in the bay," we go back to branham high school for another year of winter wishes. it's a story that will make you bay area proud.

and yes we are slightly warmer, but still expected to top out at the 50s. we have cloud cover ahead, which warmed up us nicely. some areas about ten degrees warmer than the 20s and 30s, so that freeze warn we had yesterday is off to a much better start. let's talk about the air quality. we're still seeing the religion of high pressure, the pollutants right near the ground level, so still dealing with the unhealthy air quality. it's actually illegal to do wood burning. i know if you have a fireplace, i know it's tempting, but may light some nice candles in place of it. 5 degrees, santa rosa at 58 degrees, oakland 57, san jose 59, so no plaj difference, but look at kirkwood. it does look like a postcard up

there. if you have plans to head to lake tahoe, today is probably going to be your best travel day. we are following the storm system we've been talking about, kind of the past couple days, another weak storm system, so it's kind of sitting off the pacific right now. if i fast-forward, sunday december 24th, it does starred to move it, but estates very off to the north. the north bay has a chance of seeing some showers early on, same for the sierra mountains. christmas eve late into early christmas morning. if you notice, december 25th, that system steers off stott east and the majority of the bay area will not see rain on christmas day. that's going to leave behind a ridge of high pressure. that's what this is. that's going to keep us dry yet again probably through the end of the year into the start of the new year. if you're heading out of town,

cybersecurity expert jim stickily has come to us with an urgent alert, telling us he's cracked the code with nordstrom gift carts. he can hack in and drain all the money. >> i have ten here, you're saying you can hack these. >> not only can i hack those, but also the cards for sale right now, i can hack thought when they become activated, drain the funds as well. >> how? >> can have software to po you will card pins one at a time. >> he says he's discovered a few problems with nordstrom gift cards, including shorter pin number that most retailers, with no protection from bots. we're not showing you how he does it, but within minutes, the money on that card could be gone. >> you're obviously one of the get guys, but if you were a criminal what could you do with this information? >> obviously now that i have the card number and pin, i can make

purchases, or there are sites that will buy them from you. >> did you try this on other retailers? >> i have looked at other retailers. nordstrom had a flaw in their designs that allowed this to work where others generally don't. >> he said thieves can -- snapping photos on gift cards and once activated drank those cards, too. this is my card here, we put $50 and this is the packages. we haven't touched the packaging. just like this you can hack it? >> absolutely. the last 16 digits, there's the card number. all you have to do is crack the three-digit pin. >> and how it's sold. >> plain of day. >> he gets to work on my card. >> that's easy. there it is. >> telling us he's drained the funds. but did it really work? i take the gift card to nordstrom, checking to see if he's actually drained it. >> i want to see on it.

>> zero. >> zero? >> nothing, nada. >> thank you very much. happy holidays. thank you. i call nordstrom to tell them what we've found. this is jeff rossen calling from nbc news. a security expert came to us and says he found a flaw, where he's able to hack into the system and literally drain all the gift cards down. he wants to show you how he did this so you guys can fix the problem. nordstrom declined to meet us with in person, so we connected them by phone. he walked, nordstrom telling nbc news, our customers are always our top priority. if we learn they were negatively impacted by an sure with our gift card systems, we would work quickly to take care of this, adding -- we have a number of gift card security controls in place and a team of experts that regular lay test, review and enhance those controls. securing gift cards to protect

your money this holiday season. >> that was jeff rossen reporting, sips jeff and his team connected nordstrom with the expert, they have fixed the problems. still experts say you couldn't buy gift cards from the public racks, they say only buy gird cart at stores where they keep them behind the counter and are secure, our buy them online. if you have a card that's been drained of all the money, experts say experts should call the number rather than searching online, because they warn that scammers can create very realistic-looking customer service pijs that could fool custom customers. a north bay family down on their luck gets help from napa police just in time from christmas. the family's pickup truck was stolen. inside the truck, all their christmas presents. also the dad's only way to get to work.
