for criminals in california. how a move by governor jerry brown, has him butting heads right now at 9:00, pardons and prison reductions. insulting comments about immigrants allegedly made by president trump. what he's accused of saying that has the white house furiously pushing back. and a quiet community on edge after a violent encounter. the news starts now. good evening. thanks for joining us on this special edition of nbc bay area news. shots fired inside a bowling alley. we have new details on a frightening inside in cupertino that happened last night at the homestead bowl. a concert was taking place in the party room when shots rang out. tom jensen is live near the bowling alley with details.

tom? >> reporter: well, terry, as you know the crime rate here is low. we were looking at crime data. very low here, especially violent crimes. extremely rare. the 911 call for help came in around 10:30 friday night. >> looks like we have a couple people, active shooter. >> reporter: near the end of a rap concert at a bar inside the homestead bowl an eyewitness said a fight broke out between some of the rappers and another group of men. >> i don't know why security didn't do their job. >> reporter: this man came to the concert and said security guards weren't paying attention when a group of men came in, obviously with guns on them and picked a fight. then he heard the gunshots. after the first shots were fired he and his girlfriend ran for safety. then more shots -- maybe 15 total. >> i'm pretty sure there are five or six shooters. there were a lot of gunshots. >> reporter: a sheriff's department spokesman said

investigators don't know exactly how many gunmen were involved but at least two people were shooting at each other. tonight people who frequent the shopping center here can't believe what went down. >> it's crazy. it's always a safe place. >> reporter: they think they were not residents but people who probably came specifically for the rap concert from other parts of the bay area. >> absolutely. yeah. that's a concern. it's always a peaceful area. i'm surprised. >> reporter: one person was injured after being shot in the leg and is recuperating. deputies did arrest one man and confiscated two handguns. they aring le looking for two eyewitnesses as they look for the shooter or shooters. tom jensen, nbc bay area news. new tonight governor brown commuted sentences for 150

convicted felons in california for a christmas tradition in his office. it put california at odds with the trump administration. we are live in san francisco with a breakdown on the governor's executive order. sergio? >> reporter: terry, governor brown granted clemency for women and men with a wide array of convictions -- burglary, drug possession, even murder. but immigration advocates say the pardons for two men in particular seem to outline a continued defiance against the trump administration's immigration policies. among the 151 pardons are two for men from cambodia who were days from being deported because of criminal convictions decades ago. in the last several months the trump administration has been cracking down on immigrants with prior criminal records, even if they are not violent. governor brown's pardons have

prompted federal judges to block their deportations. an attorney with the asian law caucus represents one of the men. >> both of the men were immigrants scheduled to be placed on a plane to be deported to a country they left when they were children on monday. the governor granted a pardon. with the pardon, he's reaffirming that california believes in compassion and redemption and second chances by contrast to the fear and hate from the white house. >> reporter: the latest batch of pardons brings brown's tea toll to 1,463. he far outpaces modern governors including reagan, earl warren and his father pat brown. among those who are still in prison but had sentences commuted is oakland resident emil deweaver. he was profiled by nbc bay

feel shaking as well. a dry cold spell sweeping the bay area. changes could be on the way. take a look outside now. a beautiful shot of the bay bridge and the san francisco city lights are gorgeous. rain could be headed to parts of the bay area for christmas though. here's our meteorologist tracking the conditions. >> we are starting with milder temperatures. we have been waking up to cold temperatures. this morning we were warmer in spots thanks to high clouds that were keeping us warm. once again it is expected to keep the overnight lows a little bit more on the milder side versus freezing and below freezing temperatures we saw earlier during the work week. if you head outside oakland at 48. san jose at 50. san francisco at 51 degrees. we can expect to see some areas of isolated freezing temperatures for the interior valleys. all in all the temperature trend will show a nice warm-up in

terms of temperatures overnight. san francisco is expected to stay in the 40s at least through 4:00 a.m. as we head into christmas eve for tomorrow we have changes. i'll talk about the chance of rain coming up in a bit. terry? >> you can track the forecast with the nbc bay area app. get updates on the weather for your neighborhood. it is official. the thomas fire is the largest fire in the state's history. it started 19 days ago. it torched more than 270,000 acres. that's more than double the size of san jose, nine times the size of san francisco. it's still burning. 65% contained now, but still going. until now, 2003 cedar fire in san diego county was the largest. a memorial service today for a southern california firefighter who was killed while battling the thomas fire. hundreds came out to remember

cory iverson. he was just 32 years old. he died from burns and smoke inhalation last week. the fallen firefighter's wife ashley and their 2-year-old daughter looked on as firefighters paid tribute. cal fire san diego chief said there was an outpouring of help for the family. >> we have had tens of thousands of people reach out to our organization with offers of help and financial assistance for the family. it would allow me to sleep well tonight knowing ashley and evie and taylor are well taken care of. >> iverson's wife is also expecting the family's second child. she calls her husband a superhero. still ahead at 9:00, time's running out. shoppers race to get their holiday gifts. we'll show you the last-minute blitz. plus, people in the south bay may notice a change in their drinking water. the issue at a water plant that's responsible. and a heartwarming surprise.

this reayear? >> yes. >> reporter: finally, somebody on the nice list. >> crews are working to repair a leak on a water plant. that means people west of highway 17 are going to be receiving groundwater. that includes san jose and saratoga. here's a look at the plant involved. groundwater generally considered harder so it may taste different, but it is still safe to drink, we are told. an oakland mechanic who survived a shooting after his dog scared off a gunman was shot and killed. last night jimmy martinez packed his r.v. on 8th street near the 5th avenue exit. around 9:30 got into an argument that and the person shot martinez and took off. in the first attack martinez was in a different location when

someone told him to move. martinez was shot in the hand but his dog jumped in. he was shot in the face but survived. the dog is now with relatives. trying to figure out how two officers crashed their squad cars into each other on the san mat mateobrid bridge westbound. the air bags deployed. san francisco firefighters making christmas dreams come true for hundreds of kids. firefighters gave away 300 bicycles to kids who can use them. this is an annual tradition. children were given a chance to pick out toys they liked. >> i feel good. they have more toys now to play with. >> really happy. i always wanted a new bike. >> very cool. this year firefighters particularly focused on bringing toys to girls that look like

them. so they have a toy giveaway. barbies and dolls of all different colors and sizes. a typical family outing turns into a touching reunion for a military family in san mateo county. [ applause ] >> this navy officer found out he was coming home for christmas just yesterday. he wanted to surprise his sons and he did. his wife played along taking the family to a restaurant for launch. the boys were unaware dad was waiting in the kitchen. when their father delivered the food to the table it was -- there you have it -- a very emotional experience. >> missing my boys' birthdays, but being here for christmas. that's a nice moment for us. >> i was so emotional. my heart is so touched.

for the east bay. the north bay at 41. the reason we are a little bit warmer in the oervernight lows d early morning temperatures is thanks to clouds that blanketed the bay area. that warmed us up about ten degrees for early morning temperatures. now the air quality, we have a spare the air warning for today. no wood burning. it is actually illegal to burn wood. i know it's rough considering tomorrow is christmas eve and if you have a fireplace you probably want some wood burning but it is unhealthy. we are keeping that moderate. as far as the air quality forecast and the spare the air alert to stay in place at least through tomorrow. with the incoming system we may clear the air into the work week. now either you are going to be with family tomorrow or traveling tomorrow. so not very different from what we saw today.

if you enjoyed today's temperatures you will get round two of the 57 degrees. livermore 57. antioch 56. in concord, also 57. look at this gorgeous shot of lake tahoe. 32 degrees now. i want to show it off. we are mentioning the chance of rain and also possibly snow for the sierra. let's talk about the incoming system. we have another weak system now. it is a cold front expected to move east. if i give you a timeline, sunday december 24. it looks like we get a little slight chance of seeing light showers for the far north bay. it won't be widespread. the majority of the bay area won't even see it. in the north bay, if you go to sleep early on christmas eve and now you head out to lake tahoe you may not even catch the rain. sierra, snow, we may get flurries sunday night into early monday morning. as we head into the work week, we've got the ridge of high

the winter wishes rally. it is a guaranteed feel-good experience. this year did not disappoint. >> and now -- >> reporter: it is that time of year when snow falls in much of the country and tears fall at san jose's branham high school. it is their seventh annual winter wishes rally. the culmination of a tradition in which every student makes a wish for themselves or someone else and the student leadership class works for months to grant the biggest ones in front of the school. as students get help with their studies -- >> i just want to tell dad i love you so much. >> reporter: -- or receive help for a sick parent there is hardly a dry eye on campus. skylar henry isn't just watching this time. >> i would like to invite skylar

news. new details tonight on an explosive report about inflammatory comments president trump made allegedly in an oval office meeting. white house correspondent kelly o'donnell has the story. >> reporter: the president's fire over immigration. >> we are going to get the wall. [ laughter ] >> we need it. >> reporter: long frustrated by congress and the courts rejecting his policies, including a travel ban. >> we don't know who they are. we don't know where they come from. >> reporter: that backdrop is context for a provocative report in the "new york times" that describes a volatile oval office meeting six months ago where the president and top officials engaged in a heated conversation over how many visas the state department granted to individuals from places like afghanistan, haiti, nigeria. according to the "new york times" some, but not all of the unnamed sources say the president used language

referring to haitians as having aids and thousands coming from nigeria would not go back to their, quote, huts. the white house insisted today that senior staff actually in the meeting deny the outrageous claims and call the paper's decision to publish sad and telling. today on twitter, the president tried to steer attention back to his claims of bias against him at the fbi. taunting deputy director andrew mccabe, top ally of fired director james comey. racing the clock, 90 days to go. wow, james baker reassigned. the justice department said baker was moved out of the fbi's general counsel's office as new director christopher ray assembled his own senior team. >> kelly o'donnell reporting there. the trump administration is considering a plan to reduce illegal immigration by

separating parents from their children while they are being detained. the rationale is if there is tougher punishment it would stop people from trying to enter the country in the first place. >> it would dissuade parents from trusting themselves and their children to smugglers. the smuggling organizations that operate along the border are heartless individuals who treat human beings like merchandise. >> ripping a child from its mother's arms is never a compassionate act. no policy will deter a mother who is acting to save her child's life. >> there is a debate. advocates for tougher enforcement say it is a good step. others say it is cruel. a push to get where they are going for christmas. while winter storms have 35 million people under advisories -- rain, ice and snow coating thousands of miles of interstate from the northeast to the rockies. for those getting on airplanes a rash of delays especially in the major airports of the northeast. maya rodriguez is watching the travel impacts on atlanta.

restored. apple facing a lot of heat this week after a report surface thad the tech giant is slowing down older iphones. and wouldn't you believe it -- a teenager uncovered the practice. >> reporter: an international tech giant cornered by a psa on reddit. after thousands of views and shares the notion that apple could be deliberately slowing down iphones took the internet by storm. less than two weeks after the initial post a statement from apple admitting the discovery was correct. >> this is the new battery. >> reporter: tech fire is 17-year-old tyler barney who taught himself to take apart the iphone after he noticed the newer model was slower than his brother's older one. he replaced the battery and it worked. >> i ran tests with the old and the new battery. the old battery was half as fast as the new battery. >> reporter: tyler discovered a recent ios update that keeps the phone from shutting itself off

mindful of this holiday season. certain high tech toys could allow hackers to spy on your kids. that includes toys with cameras, microphones or gps trackers that also connect to wifi or bluetooth. >> the search has shown a lot of toys have no security whatsoever lay -- allowing hackers to listen in on conversations with children and interact with them. >> a complaint has been filed with the ftc, but connective toys haven't had any known hacking incidents. a frightening scene at this london zoo as a fire broke out. the man who took the video said he tried to use a fire extinguisher to put it out but the flames were too big. firefighters arrived to get the job done. possibly four meerkats were killed. they look like prairie dogs. the cause of the fire is not known at this time. also in london a familiar sound filling the air, one people haven't heard in months.

50 degrees in the south bay. you probably noticed this morning we didn't have below freezing temperatures. we were nine or ten degrees warmer in spots including the north bay. 41 degrees there now. the reason is we have high clouds. that blanketed and helped warm us up by a couple of degrees. it helped keep the overnight lows above freezing. no freeze warnings are in place. for tomorrow, expect similar conditions to today. some areas may see overcast skies. for the east bay, concord, 58 degrees. walnut creek, 57. oakland in the 50s. along the peninsula, also catch some overcast skies. san mateo, 56. daily city, 57. san francisco stayed in the 50s all week and it won't really change into tomorrow. a quick reminder, too, for the north bay area. santa rosa at 58.

we do still have a spare the air alert that's very much in place. it was in place today and it will be for tomorrow. north bay, east bay and the peninsula, expect unhealthy air quality, so no wood burning. it is illegal to burn wood. if you have a fireplace, i'm sorry, but you can't turn it on tomorrow. maybe burn some candles in place of the fire. we want to keep the moderate conditions at least through sunday night. as we head into monday we have the arrival of a system that could bring the potential of clearing up the air quality more than what we have been seeing all week long. let's take a look at the cold front moving east. another weak storm system. it's weak. you will notice sunday, december 24 into tomorrow night we do see a chance of seeing light sprinkles for the far north bay. maybe areas in monterey as well.
