and university avenues. the driver of the car that hit the woman did stop and the driver is cooperating with the investigation. as of now, that driver is not being cited. continuing coverage of a tragic accident in the east bay. loved ones are remembering 33-year-old chp officer, andrew camilleri. >> he was killed in a suspected dui crash late christmas eve. he leaves behind a wife and three small children. "today in the bay's", anser hassan is live at the hayward chp officer to expalestilain wh being done to the suspect and what is being done to honor the fallen officer. >> reporter: good morning. messages of support from across the country. at the bay area, the same. as you look behind me, you can see people came by to pay respects, dropping off flowers. chief assistant ernie sanchez

described him as a man of courage, integrity and a desire to serve. he was a rookie officer, joined chp a year ago. the 33-year-old lives in tracy with his wife and three children. officer camilleri was killed on christmas eve when they were parked on i-80 in hayward. ironically, looking for impaired drivers, when they were hit bay speeding car, allegedly a drunk driver behind the wheel. chp says the driver was possibly high on drugs as well. the investigation shut down southbound 880 lanes for ten hours. camilleri was in the front passenger street, his partner was in the driver's seat. he suffered only minor injuries. chp chief assistant says he's angry, not just for losing one of his officers, but because of a senseless tragedy, due to

someone driving drunk. >> he left behind three children, a wife, brothers and sisters. children that were expecting their father to come home and help open christmas presents. i'm not only disappointed, but also angered in that i had to notify a mother and three children that their father had deceased at a local hospital after being impacted by an individual who chose to drive irresponsibly. >> reporter: officer camilleri was pronounced dead at the hospital. we don't know the identity of the man that hit him except he was a 22-year-old hayward resident coming home from a holiday party. he is still in the hospital with serious injuries and likely faces felony charges once he is released. a bell ringing ceremony is planned for tomorrow in honor of officer camilleri. chp will put him on the annual wall of honor.

coming up, we will hear from a woman who witnessed the accident and rushed out to help the officer. anser hassan, "today in the bay." >> thank you. people across the bay area are coming together to help the family of the fallen chp officer. the california association of highway patrol credit union is setting up a special fund for the officer's family. 100% of the donations go directly to the family. it should be set up by this afternoon. now, to a tropical storm unleashing landslides and flash floods, killing at least 160 people and many more still missing in the philippines. this happened over the weekend. more than 97,000 people are in evacuation centers in the southern part of the country. 85,000 others are displaced. the storm, which strengthened into a typhoon before making land fall is heading toward vietnam. our investigation in the east bay. a crime happened sunday morning in downtown oakland. this is around 6:00 in the morning, two blocks from the

12th street bart station. a suspect was arrested and victim taken to the hospital. oakland police did not release anymore details. unions caught a whiff of a rare opportunity in california. they want to organize a set of workers as recreational marijuana becomes legal next week. united farm workers, teamsters and united food and commercial workers are looking to unionize the workers involved in the legal weed game. it could boost a lagging membership. with christmas behind us, back to politics for president trump. his critics are looking forwards to 2018 when they believe we will hear more about what the special counsel and the fbi uncover in the russia investigation. 2002 record of eight inches of snow. the airport reported more than 13 inches fallen in the city limits. so far this month, more than 52 inches of snow has fallen in erie. that's more than 31 inches above the normal snowfall there. more snow is expected for the rest of the week. >> wow. warm lake water mixed with cold air makes for an interesting sight. take a look at this time lapsed video of steam coming off lake superior in minnesota. the water temperature was a rather chilly 35 degrees at the time. compare that to the air temperature, which is nine degrees below zero. yeah, nine degrees below zero. a big difference there. when you factor in the windchill, 31 below zero. cold, but so beautiful there. >> yeah, i like being not in it. >> yeah. looking at it. >> seeing it.

all right. looking at the cold, it feels early to talk about burning man, which happens labor day weekend. the tickets will not increase in price. tickets will range from $190 to $1200 each. that's the same as last year. vehicle passes will remain at $80 as well. about 5,000 tickets go on presale next month. business and tech news this morning. wall street could be set for a slightly lower open this morning as traders return for the holiday weekend. the dow is coming off five straight weeks of gains and is on pace to end positive with the ninth straight month. that stretch, since 1959, now investors will get data on home prices and consumer confidence. holiday shopping season doesn't end with christmas. consumers will flock to the stores this week to make returns and redeem those gift cards. analysts expect shoppers to spend $69 billion between

not because an officer was killed in the line of duty, but it happened on christmas eve. since yesterday, people have been coming by to show their respects, some dropping off flowers. chp posted their officers received a tremendous outpouring of support from the communities we serve. we thank each and every one of you for your thoughts and prayers. officer camilleri was killed on christmas eve. his parked patrol car was hit by an alleged drunk driver who may have been speeding and high on drugs. it happened on 880 in hayward. the crash forced a shutdown of all southbound lanes for more than ten hours. camilleri was in the front seat. his partner was behind the wheel and suffered minor injuries. a woman and her husband were on the way to sfo and saw it all. they were the first on scene and rushed to help. >> i just kept pulling, pulling on the door.

finally, the door opened. i just remember him saying, there's a second officer and my heart sank. i lifted up the air bag and looked under the air bag. the other officer was across the street. my feeling is, he didn't know what hit him. he didn't know what hit him. i told my husband, he's gone. >> reporter: officer camilleri was pronounced dead at the hospital. the man who hit him hasn't been identified. all we know is he's a 22-year-old coming home from a holiday party, still in the hospital with serious injuries. he's expected to be charged with felonies once he is released. a bell ringing ceremony is planned for tomorrow in recognition of officer camilleri. reporting live in hayward, anser hassan, "today in the bay." >> thank you. that tragic crash happened as

chp is in its maximum enforcement period through new year's eve. that means more chp officers are on the road looking for people speeding or under the influence. andrew camilleri was part of the step up patrols when he was hit and killed. drivers say it's important that everyone keep safe on the roads. >> call uber. get home safe. plan ahead, before you start taking substances. >> it's one of those things, once it happens you have the biggest regret. >> in the first 30 hours of this christmas maximum enforcement period, which started friday night, officers arrested more than 600 drivers. a christmas tragedy in phoenix where a woman and two children were shot and killed. the shooter is in custody. it started yesterday afternoon. after the woman and the children were killed, the suspect then barricaded himself in an apartment and began shooting at officers injuring one.

he was arrested. no word on his relationship with the victim or motive behind the shooting. dozens of people burned after a fireworks accident. a traditional celebration in a cuban town. the city of remedios is known for fireworks. the christmas eve event draws thousands of cubans each year. they say 22 people were burned. a 16-year-old girl is recovering after she was shot in the south bay. it happened christmas eve morning, just before 2:00 a.m. in san jose. when police arrived, they found the victim with at least one gunshot wound. she was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening wounds. police have not released description of the shooter. no time off for the holidays for hundreds of firefighters on the front lines of the thomas fire in southern california. the good news is, the

containment of the fire stands at 86%. full containment is expected this coming week. the fire burning started more than three weeks ago, more than 1,000 structures have been destroyed. the thomas fire is now the largest fire in california state history. 6:37 right now. new this morning, think twice before throwing away all the boxes you have from holiday gifts. they could attract thieves. pete suratos is live in redwood city with information you need to know to keep your home safe. good morning to you, pete. >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus. really, this should apply any day of the year, especially when you get those items that could attract attention, but more so on christmas day. say you have that big tv or a laptop or even something shipped that says what the item is. be careful when you bring it to your trash bins. here in redwood city, they are

doing a good job. if you put the boxes out there, it could attract the attention of thieves and know those products are inside of your home. there are police departments across the country giving tips on what to do. here are some of those tips. they are more than likely common sense. you want to break down that box, that big box, whatever product it may be so it can fit in your trash can and two, hidden from anyone that may want to take it from inside your house. also, you don't want to fill up the trash to the brim. that's going to attract attention. also, more importantly, don't leave the trash on the curb. it's telling them you have that product in your hochl. a good tip is getting rid of it slowly. don't bring all those items out. if there's a situation you have here in redwood city, at least on this, it tracks pick up today. bring out the boxes early in the morning when you know the trash pick up is going to happen. of course, more important, you want to be cautious of your

it continues through new year's day. now that the rush is over for christmas shopping, today, apparently, is the day to return any unwanted gifts. american consumers returned hundreds of billions of dollars in merchandise each year. in fact, retailers expect an average of 13% of their holiday sales this year will result in returns. a good chunk of the returns take place today, the day after christmas, of course, from a customer perspective, retailers will be doing a lot to build our loyalty today. also, make sure to check on individual return policies before heading out to stores. now, to the warriors christmas match up. golden state taking on the cavaliers at home. the warriors played for the first time since the finals. the game was close throughout. fourth quarter, durant gets the ball and goes in for the slam dunk. the game tied in the final

the roads. here's a look at the visibility. this is what we have as far as the fog that's rolling across the north bay, reducing the visibility to .75 mile in santa rosa. once again, with that very cold air, there may be icy patches on the elevated roadways. look how much we warm up, to 61 degrees. low 60s for the south bay, up to 63 degrees in san jose. all clear start. as you are getting dressed this morning, you need extra layers and a coat, definitely a good choice. also pants would be a good option today, too. we will have more comfortable weather later on today. low 60s if you are going to santa cruz. a lot more sunshine. we have a lot of sun in this forecast because of the high pressure that's causing the air to sink. as it sinks, it keeps any storm system from moving in our direction. so, it's going to be all dry over the next few days. as that moves to the east, that

may be opening up the door for at least a storm system or two to move in in time for the start of 2018. here is a look at our forecast for the rest of the year. high temperatures in the low 60s in san francisco. upper 60s for the inland areas. mike was saying it feels very much like a holiday at the bay bridge. >> it does. not because of the holiday lights. we have no metering lights. it's holiday light. there's no metering lights this morning and no back ups. that's a treat. we'll show the light in motion on the map. green is the only color you can pick from. no problems, upper east shore in the north. highway 37, out of vallejo, no delays where these tend to bottleneck. no problems for the south bay, not everyone the start. we have one incident reported on 580, approaching castro valley. i'll check on that and let you know if there's anything major to report. a good opportunity to ride, even

6:56. welcome back. before you head out the door, here are the top stories on "today in the bay." >> live pictures from the hayward chp where people started placing flowers for a fallen chp officer. 33-year-old officer andrew camilleri was killed in a crash on christmas eve. they were parked when a suspected dui driver hit them. he died shortly after at the hospital. they received an outpouring of support in the wake of the

accident. a bell ringing ceremony is planned for tomorrow to honor officer camilleri. the suspect hasn't been identified. he is expected to be charged, once he is released. chp officers are investigating a deadly accident involving a pedestrian on the east bay freeway. the officers say a woman was killed while walking until the slow lane on eastbound interstate 80 in peberkeley thi morning. it happened between 1:30 and 2:00 this morning. the driver that hit the woman is cooperating in the investigation and hasn't been cited. at least 164 people are dead and 171 others missing in the philippines after a tropical storm brought landslides and flash flooding. tens of thousands of people have been displaced from their homes. the tropical storm hit the philippines as a tropical storm, but strengthened to a typhoon before blowing out of the

country on sunday. a live look from redwood city where trash pick up resumes today. think twice before you throw away all those boxes from the holidays. police say you should avoid putting out boxes that once held big tvs, games, computers or other expensive items. that could be an invitation for thieves to check out your home. if you need to throw out the boxes, crush the box, break it down so it fits inside your trash bin or recycle bin so people driving by won't notice. a lot of people are getting rid of christmas trees now that the holiday is over. union city is offering free christmas tree disposal for the rest of the month and january. place your tree at the curb in or on a green organic bin. make sure you remove the tree stand, ornaments, tinsel and those lights. a live look outside from sfo, all lit up in christmas colors. a cool start across the bay.
