they have to be loving the bay bridge. >> they are at least this week. we don't often say that. look, the trend continues, no metering lights, no backup, no problems at the bay bridge. we will look at the maps and we're showing a similar state for most of your drives around the bay. we are still tracking a crash over there in danville off of 680 right around he will sara, we will talk about the update in just a second. north 87 the sky port off ramp by sjc you see the runways on our map, there is an issue, a crash at the end of the ramp that may be an issue getting on to city streets, getting right by the airports. we will track that because we have a lot of vacation travelers this time of year. i will let you know if anything is blocked coming up. happening today the man accused of plotting a christmas day terror attack at san francisco's pier 39 is due in court. it comes as we're heading into the new year's eve holiday weekend and police are beefing up security. >> "today in the bay's" pete suratos is live at pier 39 this morning and, pete, police are beefing up, they are taking

recently obviously there was a -- pier 39, we all know about that. >> unfortunately i think that in this day and age you have to be a little more hyper aware. >> i think it is good so that everyone will be informed and not waking up the entire city. >> reporter: everitt jameson is the man accused of plotting a christmas day terrorist attack at pier 39. he will appear in court later today. he is charged with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization after multiple communications with an fbi informant he believed was an isis leader. now, there is no credible terrorism threat for san francisco on new year's eve, that's according to officials but they want to remind folks coming here for the celebration that if you see something, say something. also, to text that information for these alerts so that they can stay informed. we are live in san francisco, pete suratos for "today in the bay." 6:04 right now. tight security preparations

under way in las vegas as well for new year's eve. the department of homeland security is expecting a higher risk of terrorism and criminal activity this year. it's been just three months since the shooting massacre there left 58 people dead. the federal government is bringing in snipers and personnel to assist las vegas metro police. still, police chief assured visitors there are no current threats on new year's eve. it caught people's attention yesterday and there are certainly more earthquakes to talk about after a widely felt earthquake in san jose tuesday. there were more tremors, like i said, yesterday. the latest a magnitude 2.9 southeast of hollister, just 6:30 last night. there has been a few in the bay area. yesterday the largest, a 3.4. now, the 3.9 quake that struck tuesday night in the alum rock neighborhood of san jose was felt across the bay area. a geophysicists with usgs says because it was a fairly shallow

earthquake, it could be widely felt. >> it's a pretty typical earthquake for the calaveras fault which tends to produce a lot of small to moderate magnitude earthquakes. >> and there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage from any of these recent quakes. a danville family is safe this morning after a scary burglary in their home. this happened yesterday morning at a home on savona court off of mccauley road. the woman saw that suspect enter their home and fled the house with her family calling police. officers arrested that suspect before he could leave and with those stolen items still in his hands. live to washington, d.c. this morning. president trump says the economy is looking up, but he still has only one major legislative victory under his belt, that tax bill. according to new economists the government polled nearly a third of americans believe president

trump has also repealed obamacare. "today in the bay's" edward lawrence joins us live from capitol hill this morning to clear up some of this confusion for folks. good morning, edward. >> reporter: good morning, laura. yeah, there is a lot to clear up and a lot of confusion that's out there, but first i will tell you when lawmakers come back here to washington the president is going to meet with congressional leaders at camp david next week to talk about his legislative agenda which will include healthcare. president trump visited the west palm beach fire station, listing off accomplishments he feels he should get more credit for. >> so the country is really like a big beautiful ship that we're turning around and a lot of great things are happening. >> reporter: the president mentioned repealing the individual mandate in the affordable care act as part of the new tax bill which required everyone to have health insurance or pay a penalty. >> the most unpopular thing which most people thought should have been unconstitutional, but we repealed it.

christmas tree. now, there is no better way to do this than the annual tree chipping ceremony. it's going on today in front of the san francisco city hall. city officials will be on hand to push those dead or dying christmas trees through the giant wood chipper. they will also announce the official dates of curb side tree collections. right now it's 6:09. you're getting up, about to take down those christmas decorations or maybe you are heading out the door for work. it's going to be a chilly start, but a very warm day. look at these high temperatures, we should be only at about 57 degrees in san jose, well, today we will see a high of 64 degrees and some light winds starting to pick up. for the east bay, oakland, 60 degrees and 61 degrees in antioch, 58 degrees in san mateo. not bad. pretty much like we were yesterday. some upper 50s in san francisco, the embarcadero at 58 degrees and santa rosa we are looking at a high of 64 degrees. we do still have that fog and

chilly temperatures this morning. we will take a look at that and break down today's temperature trend for san jose coming up in about four minutes. mike has an update for that crash in danville. the one off of 680. overall great view of the commute, again, green sensors all around as we've been seeing all week, we expect that to continue into the new year. we are looking at southbound 680, there is some slowing el share row the crash on the shoulder they've blocked the slow lane as you're traveling through the area. they may have just cleared that into the area, just watch between alamo and anville heading south on 680. the walnut creek interchange moves very well and into the south bay no delays. that crash should be clearing in the next couple minutes. 87 at the sky port off ramp, no problems getting to sjc. the south bay commute as it is around the bay. >> everybody is on vacation this week. coming up next on "today in the bay," wild winter weather still gripping much of the nation. the dangerously cold conditions

look like today for cupertino. some low 40s to start, but we will be at 50 degrees by 10:00. quickly warming temperatures into the low 60s today. a lot of sunshine. our dry weather continues and we are looking forward to some rain as well in that seven-day forecast. i will have the details on that coming up at about 6:19. we are looking at great travel times approaching the bay bridge, no delays. we don't usually see this in the 6:00 hour, but it's a special week with a lot of folks taking special schedules. no problems out of the tri-valley, either. we will show you a couple spots i am tracking, though, coming up. look what is happening the deep, deep freeze. more snow continues to pile up in the lake effect belt areas like the video that you see here. nothing like that in our neck of the woods. this is from pennsylvania. nearly six feet of snow has already dumped there and in some parts of the northeast they are expected to experience temperatures colder than antarctica and siberia.

parts of the siberia hit a low of negative 10 degrees yesterday. in the coming days temperatures in concord, new hampshire, are expected to reach as low as de. that's cold. new year's revelers in new york, times square, could face the coldest celebration in more than 50 years. meteorologists are predicting 11 degrees at midnight, but that cold windchill will make it feel like minus 10 degrees. why do this when you can watch it on tv? i don't understand. the temperature reaches -- if it reaches those levels it could tie the second coldest record that was set back in 1962. >> i guess for the experience. >> i will pass on that. business and tech news this morning, the irs cautioning people that not all property tax pre payments will be deducted. >> this comes as homeowners are rushing to pay their 2018 bill before the new tax laws take effect. for that and the rest of our news before the bell we go live to landon dowdy at cnbc world

headquarters. good morning, landon. >> good morning to you both as well. wall street looks set to add to yesterday's modest gains, the dow is on pace for a sixth straight positive week, it's also poised for a nine-month winning streak which would be the longest stretch since 1959. we've gotten data today on unemployment and manufacturing. the dow rising 28 points to 24,774, the nasdaq up 3 to 6,939. some homeowners have been rushing to pay their 2018 property taxes early to take advantage of a deduction that's being scaled back under the new u.s. tax law, but the irs says property taxes that have not been assessed before 2018 won't be deductible on 2017 tax returns. many towns don't have their full 2018 property tax bills ready. the new law caps the amount that you can deduct in state and local income, sales and property taxes at $10,000. that limit would

disproportionately affect homeowners in higher tax states such as new york and california. san francisco and los angeles counties are currently not allowing property tax pre payments. instagram is adding a recommended post to your feed, the social media site has been testing the feature earlier this month. it will suggest posts for you based on those that have been liked by other accounts that you follow or that instagram's algorithm has selected. the section recommended for you is labeled to not confuse you with your own home feed. 6:17 right now. if your kids are nearby you might want to cover their eyes and ears for just a moment. netflix once again helping parents, you know, help their -- help the parents help the kids on new year's eve. company launched a new set of new year's eve on demand count downs for the new year, that way parents can let their kids ring in the new year earlier than midnight. count downs are available and

well. then look at our high temperatures today, it will be another nice one, a lot of sunshine, light winds. seven-day forecast is up at the bottom to of the screen showing a little bit of rain towards the end of that forecast, but today enjoy the sun and we are going to have a cool start. as you get in the car this morning, going through the south bay and time for that morning commute, more people getting out the door, it's going to be at 40 degrees. we have to crank those heaters up. as we go through the day our temperatures making it into the mid to upper 50s, low 60s by 1:00. if you don't have to deal with the commute and you can relax today, you're still off of work, how about heading to half-moon bay. it is going to be cool throughout the morning, bring a warm coat and a blanket, but then look at how the sunshine warms up those temperatures, going to be up to 60 degrees there. we cannot complain about the cool weather. i wanted to show you what it looks like elsewhere across the country if you have family heading back home, they probably don't want to leave, especially if they live in chicago where the high temperature today is

going to be 16 degrees. a deep, very cold chill, dipping into parts of the east coast as well new york city today the high of 19. for us we are going to see more dry weather. looking forward to finally some rain in the forecast, but that doesn't come to the bay area until about tuesday or wednesday of next week. we are looking at temperatures staying in the upper 50s to low 60s in san francisco, more clouds, but dry throughout the weekend. inland areas up to 67 tomorrow. mike, another update, what's happening in danville? >> we had that crash, kari, 680 at el cerro. i want to show everybody the view. a great view. speed sensors at the limit all around the bay, even over at southbound 680 where we did have that crash and a quick traffic break to get the crashed vehicles over to the shoulder. looks like everything is cleared but i will wait until chp does give me the all clear before i say it is completely gone. no problems, no delays for the walnut creek interchange. look at this, there's concord, there are the bridges, screen is that, carquinez bridge and the bay bridge, no backup there,

too. we have had some very chilly mornings. we start out below freezing in fairfield and some of the north bayó)9p valleys have been havin cold temperatures. 34 degrees at napa and santa ro rosa. observing plant 39 degrees, 41 degrees in san jose. you do need to bundle up, but later today it's going to be really nice. a lot of the inland areas reaching into the low to mid 60s, san jose 64, palo alto 61 and san francisco 59 degrees. we will talk about the weekend as you make your new year's eve plans, that's coming up. mike is getting used to this new look at the bay bridge. >> but i guess we shouldn't get too used to it. this is because of vacation plans for many drivers around the bay, between christmas and new year's, no metering lights once again. this is thursday, friday and then next week we should see traffic start to ease back in. enjoy it while you can. looking at the maps you still can for a while, look at the travel times getting there. upper east shore freeway we have

grown from 14 now to 15 minutes, still we usually don't see these great travel times during the 6:00 hour during your norm ago commuting for the rest of the year. a little fog in the north bay but it's not presenting a problem, just noting that it's there like it has been for the last couple days. an easy drive approaching the maze, bay bridge, golden gate bridge and the south bay. that crash at sky port has cleared. they are not worried about the crash over in danville cleared from 680. now this morning a dramatic rescue overnight in the santa cruz mountains. rescue of a man who broke his leg after falling off a trazátq reservoir. >> "today in the bay's" anser hassan is live in the santa clara county fire station in los gatos this morning with new video of that rescue. good morning, anser. >> reporter: rescue crews say this man is lucky to have even been found. he fell from a ten foot drop, broke his leg.

he didn't have a cellphone to call 911 so he had to use his flashlight to stop a passing car. here is what we know, this happened a few hours ago, a group of friends home from college were out on a ride on hicks road, they noticed a flashing light on the guadalupe reservoir across from where they were driving. they stopped their cars and began yelling across the water to find out it was a homeless man who had fallen and broken his leg. the 40-year-old man didn't have a cellphone so his only way to signal for help was by using his flashlight. rescue crews say the man was stuck for two hours out in the dak dark. the cold weather and temperatures in the 30s bleeding from his leg. one of the guys from the group says the man was in so much pain it was hard for him to even talk and his pants were soaked in blood. santa clara county fire battalion chief says if it wasn't for this group of students chances are they wouldn't have even known about the fall. >> very fortunate for them to --

to see him flashing his light, he was probably 150 yards away from the roadway and they were driving by maybe 35 miles an hour. so incredibly lucky to be found. >> reporter: now, the battalion chief says it took about 90 minutes to rescue the man because they had to pull him out and then move him to the other side of the reservoir. he is said to be in stable condition and currently undergoing treatment. reporting live, anser hassan, "today in the bay." it is 6:33 right now. developing story in the south bay. right now san jose police trying to figure outkz&wz shot and killed a man. the victim was found last night on van winkle lane in east san jose near the intersection of capitol expressway and story road. police say they were called out to the scene and found the victim suffering from at least one gunshot wound. he died shortly after. we spoke with one witness who didn't want us to show her face. she says she's worried about her nephew who was out for a walk at the time of the shooting. >> we were just eating and then

we seen all these cops just driving through here and so we all came outside and then we were trying to call my nephew to see if it's him because he walks down through that way. >> police have not released any information on the suspects. new video this morning, a cleanup at a busy mountain view intersection after a deadly crash involving a charter bus and a motorcycle. that crash happened around 6:00 last night. as you can see right there, the cleanup went well into the night. this street backjdanow. there is no word é;íú exactly wt happened that caused this crash. this was near google's headquarters at shoreline boulevard and plymouth street. the motorcyclist was killed. we spoke to a woman who says she was driving right behind the bus. >> i immediately called 911, told them what i had seen, where he was on the road. as i was on the phone with 911 people started swarming over to him to try to assist him, try to move him. >> now, the bus operated by loop

transportation. at the time of the crash the driver was the only person on board. continuing coverage is morning of the hayward chp officer who was killed in the line of duty. a public memorial service is now being planned for saturday for officer andrew camilleri. it will be held at the christian life center in stockton. it starts at 8:30 saturday morning. in the meantime we are hearing from a family member of officer camilleri, his sister sharing her feelings on social media yesterday saying, quote, andrew is my brother. he was a loving father to his wife and three kids, a great brother, son, uncle, friend, cousin and much more. family, friends and completion attended a special bell ringing ceremony yesterday to honor camilleri. his partner who was in a patrol car with him when they were hit by a suspected dui driver was also there. here is the acting chp commissioner. >> andrew camilleri ept mices what a chp officer should always be, a dedicated and selfless

public servant. >> a donation site has been set up by the chp for the officer's family. we've posted the link on our website at nbcbayarea.com. and this morning we're learning the name of a man who was killed last week in a crash involving a fedex truck. this is video of the crash on interstate 880 in oakland. 24-year-old gonzalo chavez jurp of land. the driver of the semi was injured but survived. the cause of the crash is still under investigation. bart is rolling into 2018 with a lot of changes. children and teenagers under 18 now get 50% off their rides but you have to get one of those clipper cards to get that benefit. also all fares are going up about 3%. minimum fare increasing to $2 for adults, $1 for youth and 75 cents for seniors and disabled riders. 50 cents will be added to your fares if you use those old fashioned paper tickets.

bart wants to get paperless. there is no extra charge on clipper cards. be prepared to show proof of payment, bart will be checking for that on all its trains. it can be a little interest icky getting the clipper card so make sure you check the website to find out which agency and which station are allowing you to buy them there. no problem for the san mateo bridge westbound, eastbound there is a disabled vehicle and the bridge crew is helping folks get off of the freeway there. no delays that show up on our map. eastbound and westbound is your commute, both are green, almost all are green. this is a great drive as we continue the lighter post holiday traffic, or pre end of the year. a smooth drive, a little fog registering on our roadway index for the north bay, not a major problem. transit agencies reporting no problem. laura talked about the changes for the pricing on the bart system. muni, 105 today, so happy

birthday muni. word is that those cards have had -- cars have had a little work done. >> it's a muni secret. nothing wrong at all, right? >> good option for the weekend, too, as we approach new year's eve. we are going to have a lot of parties and celebrations going on around the bay area. as we check out saturdays forecast still really nice. we keep the dry weather, it will be cool during the morning and late evening hours. highs reaching up to the mid 60s. on new year's eve 59 degrees, there will be more clouds moving in especially for the middle of the day, the bay will be at 61 degrees for the high, inland 63 degrees. if you are planning to head out to the fireworks show in san francisco, good spot along pier 39 of fisherman's wharf, also treasure island a good place, too. it will be in the low 50s. there will be the chance that we could see fog rolling in and that may block your view of the fireworks. mostly clear, though, for

christmas in the park in san jose there will be a countdown to new year's eve starting out in downtown san jose, big celebration there, it's going to be cool, make sure you have on a nice warm coat. if you are going to santa cruz it will be the warmest on tomorrow, 68 degrees, low 60s for the rest of the weekend but there will be an early morning sunrise hike on new year's eve on sunday with a high up to 60 degrees, but there will be more clouds moving in, though, looks like there will be nice weather for hiking as well. if hiking is not your thing, you want to sip some wine, maybe go to paso robles, it will be up to 68 degrees on sunday, new year's eve and warmest tomorrow with a high of 76 degrees. look really nice. if you are taking the family to yosemite it's going to be also very pleasant there, it's been a while since we have had any wet weather so shouldn't have anyú> saturday and mostly sunny. if you let me know what you're doing this weekend you may see

nbc bay area.com. time for a peek at weather and traffic together. we're heading into the holiday weekend, for some it's going to be a long weekend and a good one, too. we are looking pretty good in the weather department. it's cool to start this morning, freezing temperatures in fairfield, livermore 36 degrees. we have dropped down to 39 now in oakland. a chilly start, but it will be a warm day. we are also going to have some low visibility in spots looking at the north bay, the visibility down to about a mile. clear visibility is ten miles, so we are seeing that from san francisco areas to the south and over towards the east bay, mostly the north bay right now with some patchy fog and that may slow you down as well. temperatures it's going to reach into the low to mid 60s, the seven-day forecast is also up at the bottom of the screen showing more dry weather. milpitas today 63 degrees, 64 in danville and oakland look for a high of 61. we will be at 64 in half-moon

bay and 59 degrees in outer sunset. fog rolling through at times throughout the day and mostly clear for the north bay. later on this afternoon we will be in the low to mid 60s and a light wind. as you get started this morning you do need a nice warm hat and a coat, but later today it is going to be so nice, just make sure you have those layers for the morning. you need to pack a lot of layers if you are going to the sierra this weekend, but then look at these high temperatures, it's going to reach into the upper 50s tomorrow and some lower 50s for the rest of the weekend. shouldn't have any problems getting there because we haven't had any snow recently, but that's part of the problem, too. i wanted to show you the sierra snow pack update, we are for most of the sierra only at about 20 to 30% of normal for the amount of snow we should have at this point at the end of december, compare that to last year, we were at 72%, we know we had a lot more of those snowstorms rolling through and for this year it's been few and

far between. hopefully we get some snow next week but it does look like for the next several days it does stay dry. also for the bay area a lot of storm systems rolling to the north of us but look at the change in our pattern as we go into next week, it does show a fairly significant storm system starting to move in by tuesday into wednesday that could bring us a decent amount of rain. i will continue to track that. in the meantime we will have a nice next several days, temperatures above normal. in san francisco reaching up to 62 degrees tomorrow and 67 degrees for the inland valleys. still some cool mornings, but we will start to see more clouds moving in and by tuesday i will be tracking that rain for you. mike has a new crash now along the peninsula. that's right. it's easy for me to tell when i have a new crash because there are so few incidents reported oó the roadways right now.
