>> ann, thank you. dylan, i have a feeling you're going to say we haven't seen the worst of it. >> unfortunately that is true. at midnight sunday into early morning, that's the coldest yits going to get in new york city. 79 million are at risk for dangerous wind chills. the actual air temperatures are reflective of just that arctic cold pouring in from the north. 18 below is what is currently is in duluth. st. louis feels like 7. columbus feels like 5. as we go through the end of the year and into the start of 2018, we're looking at temperatures to begin below zero. kansas city 6 below. wind chills will be running 20 to 40 degrees below zero. it will be brutally cold for most of the country. here in new york city we are looking at a temperature of 11 degrees.

the winds look stronger than initially thought. now we've dropped the wind chill to 5 below. you need to stay covered up. protect your skin. it could be the second coldest new year's eve on record. >> wow. all right. thanks. president trump is spending the last few days of his holiday vacation at his mar-a-lago estate in florida. on friday he invited coast guard members to a day of golf. this morning we're learning about how the interview came to be. kelly o'connedonnell is traveli with the president. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, sheinelle. as you point out, the president spending the final few days of this year in a cooler than normal florida and he opened up about some of the hot button issues of the day. while we've seen the president take lots of criticism for how much time he spends at his golf courses, at least for one day he tried to make that game a sign of good will.

after days enjoying december sun on his own golf course, friday the president played host to about 75 members of the u.s. coast guard providing lunch and a tee time. >> you can have a little tournament and determine who the best player is. maybe it's the boss. >> reporter: an outing inspired during a thanksgiving day visit with florida based guardsmen. the president had already come out swinging in an interview with "the new york times." while he cried the russia investigation as phoney and made him look bad, i think i will be treated fairly adding i've stayed uninvolved. an opinion on mueller explained by trump friend chris ruddy. >> this is a man that led the fbi after 9/11, did a remarkable job. i think he's been upset with the

overall thrust of these investigations. >> ruddy was dining at mar-a-lago with "the new york times" reporter near the president who agreed to an improm impromptu interview. mr. trump lashed out at chinese officials for defying north korean sanctions saying oil is going in to north korea. the president admitted i've been soft on china, on trade seeking their help. using his social media fire hose, the president also linked extending legal protection for young people brought to the u.s. as children with his own wish list. there can be no daca without the separately needed wall and ending chain migration. and in that wide ranging interview with "the new york times" the president also talked about the media and said he would predict his own reelection in 2020 saying they would let me

tweeted about immigration reform, the post office, amazon, climb change, his own approval ratings. based on those tweets, can we get a sense of what the president might focus on in 2018? >> reporter: absolutely. it's a window in two ways. some of the issues like immigration, finding a solution for d.r.e.a.m.ers is one of the key issues that the president and members of congress will be facing. in another sense the fact that the president's tweeting tells us he's going to continue that. he's going to sort of tell readers and voters exactly what's on his mind, when he's thinking it, what's bothering him and that's not going to stop. >> let's pull back. you've been closely reporting on the president for a while. the white house is a steep learning curve. do you have a sense of what he's learned over the past year and maybe if he'll do anything different moving forward? >> reporter: that's a great question. the president came in to office thinking that role might be a

before turning the gun on himself. police responded to reports of an active shooter when a gunman shot two of his colleagues at a holiday luncheon. two mean died at the scene including the shooter. the second victim managed to drive himself to a hospital where he is in stable condition. it appears to be workplace violence with a homicide investigation now under way. president trump is condemning friday's attack on coptic christians on egypt's capital. the president spoke with egypt's president after a gunman killed at least nine people including a police officer outside a kyrie church and a christian owned shop. the ministry say a man opened fire at the entrance and tried to throw an explosive device. the attacker was wounded by security forces and taken into custody. the islamic state group has claimed responsibility for the attack but have provided no evidence so far. at the cotton bowl it was the ohio state buckeyes with a 24-7 win over the usc trojans but the highlight came before the game even started.

>> yeah, we've got a fairly cool start, 30s again and 40s in the forecast and we do still have that bridge of high pressure that is dominating over the area. it's been keeping us nice and dry. you can see right there in santa rosa, 31 degrees, napa, 32 degrees, san jose, 41, and san francisco, right now, at 47 degrees. but eventually, that temperature trend does climb into the 50s for san jose and also san francisco, 50 degrees by 9:00 a.m. in san jose. we will get a little bit more of the high cloud action going on, which we will get a combination of sun and clouds. eventually, though, by the afternoon, the sky should clear quite nicely for san francisco as well. partly clear skies, 54 degrees by 11:00 a.m. by 12:00, 55 degrees and we are tracking kind of that ridge of high pressure that's breaking down, which will bring a chance of rain by the middle of the week but i will have all of those details during the 7:00 a.m. hour. >> good tease. stay tuned for that, thanks. the california highway patrol officer killed on

nbc's ron mottis following this. >> los angeles police arrested the 25-year-old in connection to this case. we're waiting to get details, but he is likely facing serious charges for something commonly known as a prank. it's called swatting. and it may have just turned may have just turned deadly. wichita police released body cam video of an officer shooting a man in the doorway of a home. authorities responded to the scene after a caller phoned in what officials say was false information. a man claiming to have shot his father then holding two relatives hostage. but there was no such emergency. 28-year-old andrew fench, a father of two opened the door with police positioned around the house and was fired upon after ignoring instructions to

keep his hands up. >> the irresponsible actions of a prankster put people and lives at risk. if the false police call had not been made we would not have been there. it was believed to have originated from a disagreement over the video game "call of duty." tyler was arrested on friday under suspicion of placing the call. fench is thought to have no connection to the gamers. >> i keep thinking this is a dream, i'm going to wake up and he's going to be here. cops can't just go around shooting people without any consequences. >> celebrities have been frequent targets. my miley cyrus have had people show up under false pretenses. a prank chilling with fake details, tragic in its real result. the officer who fired that shot is a seven year veteran on the

force. he's been placed on paid administrative leave. >> ron for us this morning. thank you. let's go to dylan. she's head mer way outside to the frigid plaza. >> i bundled up. if you bundle up, it's okay. it's not too windy right now. let's take a look at the snow we're expecting across parts of the northeast. it's a quick moving clipper system that's going to kind of race through the area. we've got some winter weather advisories, also lake effect snow. that's where most of the snow will pileup. it's already snowing in parts of the western michigan and up near erie pennsylvania. as the winds shift we will start to see the snow shift as well. it will last on and off. we can another start with 30s and 40s across the bay area. right now in san francisco, it's rather on the warmer side than every where else at 46 degrees. 41 degrees for san jose. right now in the mountain view area, upper 30s at 37 degrees

but it's nice and cold in napa at 32 degrees. we are expecting another mostly dry day with milder conditions into the afternoon. if you notice, 55 degrees by about 10:00 a.m. eventually we'll start seeing some cloud cover and the skies will clear by the afternoon. while we are doing our best to keep warm there's one group of people who thrive on the frigid air. hockey players. this morning the new york rangers and buffalo sabres are gearing up for a big game over at citi field, home to the mets. katherine, it is going to be 17 degrees at game time on monday. how does everyone prepare for this? >> reporter: that's actually perfect weather, dylan, because we are used to braving the elements for this winter classic. this will be the tenth annual tradition. they've been busy preparing the ice surface for the teams to hit the ice. you can see behind me there's a

i'm kira klapper. vianey arana has a look at the microclimate forecast for the last saturday of the year. >> yes. there it is. tomorrow's already new year's eve. looks like we're going to end on a fairly dry note but 2018 might be off on a rainy start. couple things to look forward to today, though. mostly clear skies. we will see some high clouds to begin with so you might see overcast skies. 41 in san jose and 46 degrees in san francisco. so we've had a very similar pattern the past couple of days thanks to that high pressure, but that high pressure is expected to kind of break apart. once that does break apart, we'll start tracking the system that is starting to make survival in towards the week but i know a lot of people want to know how cold is it going to get on new year's eve for all those celebrations. tune in at 7:00 a.m. because i have a complete breakdown of your last day of 2017 and also first day of 2018.

where there are already five feet on the ground. all of this providing a frigid welcome to 2018. >> all right, anne thompson for us there in times square. thank you. some other headlines we're following this morning, new details on that deadly apartment fire here in new york city. officials say the blaze that killed a dozen people was started by a 3-year-old boy who was playing with a stove in a first floor apartment. his mother escaped with the boy and another child, as well, but she did not manage to close the door behind her. flames raced through the stairwell. a city spokesman says the city was supposed to have self-closing doors. meanwhile, a vigil was held overnight in memory of the victims. police are looking for what motivated a man to open fire in a long beach law firm friday, killing one person, before killing himself. a gunman shot two of his colleagues at a hollywood luncheon. two men died at the scene, including the shooter.

>> i love it. well, keep counting those seconds. i love every second of it. let's take a look at what's going on across the country this weekend. we are going to see snow showers. flurries here in new york city falling right now. temperatures are very, very cold across most of the country. sunday, the last day of 2017, it is going to be cold. bitter cold across the northern plains with air temperature not even getting above zero. in the northeast we'll see lake-effect snow, and at midnight, 11 degrees in new york city. that would make it a tie for the second coldest new year's eve on record, even colder across the upper midwest and northern plains. as we kick off 2018, record lows in the northeast, but most of the country is looking nice and sunny. in the southwest temperatures actually about ten to 15 degrees above average, so and we're also expecting to be slightly a little bit on the warmer side for new year's eve, but the temperatures are actually cooling now that that
