saves l welcome back. the national park service hopes its new warning signs will save lives at san francisco's ocean beach. experts say many people, especially tourists, don't realize that the currents there can be deadly, and nbc bay area investigation this summer prompted swift action by the government. investigative reporter liz wagner has the newest development. >> reporter: ocean beach is considered by many to be one of the most dangerous beaches in america. for years, the hazard signs posted along the beach warned of rip currents and drowning, but they didn't offer any sort of advisory to actually stay out of the water. that's now changed. the new signs at san francisco's ocean beach say, wading, swimming, and surfing is not advised. it's a much stronger message than the old signs, citizen xavier agnew of the national parks service. >> the parks service does not
7:51 am
advise you to enter the water under any conditions. new signs bring a better message to the park visitors. we want the visitors to decide based on their experience and skill level if they should go in the water. >> it's very dangerous. >> reporter: locals and champion open water swimmer kim chambers know about the frigid temperatures and powerful rip currents, but out of towners often don't. last year, a group of vallejo teens linked arms and walked into the water. the waves overpowered wayne and grisham and swept them out to sea. their high school teacher shared this video to celebrate two lives cut short. in the past two years, seven people died in the waters off ocean beach. the park services ocean rescue unit saved 75 others at risk of drowning and while the agency makes public announcements, we pointed out that the 55 signs along the water's edge didn't reflect that message until now. >> nbc did their story on it,
7:52 am
they were able to get a wider breadth of audience. it's such a high visitation area that it was really important to get this message to people who are just coming to visit for the first time. >> reporter: each year, more than 1 million travelers learn about ocean beach from sf travel, the city's most prominent travel association. when we checked the website, it warned the water was cold and advised extreme caution, but it said swimming is allowed. following our report, the park service reached out and the association has now updated its online guide to match the signs. swimming is not advised at ocean beach. >> i really want them to take away that they should not go near the water. >> reporter: the new messaging is especially important right now. park service patrollers roam the beach to alert visitors to be careful, but the ocean rescue staff only comes out from march through october. so, if you're at ocean beach this winter, the signs are the only warning you'll get. with the investigative unit, i'm liz wagner, back to you.
