moderate air quality for the north bay, the bay and the coast, and the south bay as well. looking at the high temperatures reaching into the mid-40s, starting out in the mid-40s with the high temperatures tooday in the upper 60s. the south bay is going to feel like early fall rather than the middle of winter. i'll have a look at the rest of the forecast, bring in winter-like rain to the area. mike, you are tracking the bay bridge closely. >> for two reasons. we are looking at a little bit of a back up. we may see traffic there. likely, it is going to hold off. out of san francisco, there's a little delay toward treasure island and the tunnel. the disabled vehicle in that noncommute direction. you see that little bit of slowing. hopefully give us an update and the crews get out there. meanwhile, the rest of the bay

moves nicely. a smooth flow of traffic through the south bay, 101 and 87. you may see activity by the airport. san jose international airport, there is an issue and industrial fire. again, this is just by us. for more on the fire, it's not impacting the traffic. i'm going to head back to you because it is a big deal. >> it is. thank you very much, mike. the massive fire burning in the south bay across the street from san jose international airport. one person on the "today in the bay" team says the flames were so big and so fierce they were seen from miles away. >> "today in the bay's" pete suratos is live at the scene of the paper mill. we have been seeing the flames and the smoke. the good thing is everyone inside the building were able to get out. >> reporter: yeah, that's right. the main fire has been knocked down at this manufacturing plant. i want to get to this video behind me. what you are looking at right

now, this, as fire crews are on the ground putting out the hot spots. that's one of the issues they are talking about. talking so much about the card board that caught on fire. they just put this out as we were talking, as we were waiting for the live report. that's what you are seeing from crews on the ground in santa clara. let's show you some of that video. i talked to santa clara fire and their pio on the ground. it happened around 1:06 a.m. it caught on fire, no word on the cause. all employees did evacuate safely. you are talking a big range here on matthew street. they are working to put out the fire. trying to put out the hot spots in this area. i want to point out, there is no threat of the fire spreading. the power poles that were on fire they tell me that is no

longer a concern. they are working to save it. as a result of the fire, they are telling me the power has been shut off on this street. mostly industrial businesses in the area. as far as when the power is going to be turned back on is to be determined. back out here live, you can see the issues and put out the fire, looking for those hot spots, physically sifting through the debris. fire personnel will be here on the ground for quite some time. we are going to continue to monitor this and have an update in a half hour. live in santa clara, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thank you, pete. happening today, we expect to learn more details, new details about the man accused of hitting and killing a chp officer. that happened on christmas eve. police have said it was an apparent drunk-driving crash. 22-year-old, whose name has not been released was hospitalized with serious injuries. investigators say the suspect was under the influence of

alcohol and marijuana. today, alameda county district attorney will join chp officials to announce the charges filed against the driver. now to the days of big, national headlines. president trump is back in washington, ready to work on his second year agenda. an interesting announcement overnight concerning the olympics. south korea is offering high level costs with rival north korea ahead of the games. south korea is proposing both sides meet at a village on the border to discuss olympic cooperation and how to improve overall ties. the south wants to meet a week from today. the games start next month. two elderly men remain in critical condition after they were struck by a delivery truck yesterday in san francisco. police say the truck driver made an illegal turn. that is when he struck those men, then hit a car, also in the richmond district. a family of five was in the car. none of the family members were seriously hurt. the mother in the car says everyone was shaken up. >> right where the truck hit was where my 10-year-old was sitting. so, luckily, yeah, it missed.

some glass hit his face. >> one of those elderly men suffered a punctured lung. the delivery truck driver tried to change direction as he turned and overcorrected and struck the men on the sidewalk. a formal arraignment scheduled for two charged in the deadly ghost ship fire. 36 people died in the fire that broke out at a party in oakland. the judge determined there is enough evidence for the two suspects derek and matt to stand trial. the trial date has not yet been set. right now, breaking news for you this morning. about an hour ago, big news from nbc, revealing the permanent replacement for "today's" matt lauer. >> they didn't go far to find her. they made the announcement at the top of the newscast that aired on the east cast. apparently, there is a tradition for new hosts, according to al

those showers lining up offshore. very light rain. i don't think any of this will make it to the ground because it's been so dry. a lot of showers will evaporate before hitting the ground. it will work on the atmosphere. we see the rain moving in by tomorrow and we'll be tracking more rounds of rain between wednesday and thursday. i'll have a complete look at the microclimate forecast coming up in a few minutes. heading over to mike, you are tracking a delay on the bay bridge? >> that's right, but not the toll plaza. folks are slowing to pay the cash, lanes are opening up there. it's eastbound off treasure island. see this cluster of headlights. that's where congestion is. chp is reporting. we take you to the map. you can see how light the traffic flow is. the slowing we saw on our speed sensors cleared up at treasure island. i saw it moving for a time being going where the headlights were, then paused. i think they are helping a disabled car off the bridge. plan on a tad bit of slowing in

mike traffic tease ask. right now at 5:13, mostly clear skies but clouds moving in. let's go to palo alto. 47 degrees at 7:00. a cool start but about where we should be. it does warm up well above normal, reaching the mid-60s with a few peeks of sunshine. we are getting rid of the sunshine for the next couple of days. more rain and also more clouds. i'll talk about that and what's ahead coming up in five minutes. as promised, there's a view of the bay bridge toll plaza. you see the cash lanes to the right. one of those lanes closed. that will be in the back up that you see for the cash fares. we'll see how things are shaping up, coming up. right now, check out this video here. just into the news room.

it may make your heart flutter. right there, you see that texas police officer narrowly avoiding getting struck by an approaching car after slipping on the ice. he moves his hand just in time. right there, texas is in the grips of the cold snap. police are hoping the video will remind drivers to be extra safe on those roads if you happen to be where it is snowing or sleeting. situations like that can easily happen. massive flames erupted inside a brooklyn apartment complex. it left 12 people with minor injuries. eight people had to be rescued. the investigation into what caused that fire is still under way. happening today, senator al franken will officially resign. this comes a month after he announced he would leave office. the democratic senator from minnesota is ending his political career over

allegations of sexual misconduct. he says, he won't give up his voice. lieutenant governor, tina smith, will be sworn in tomorrow. a chinese executive who was going to bring thousands of jobs to silicon valley is ordered back to china. >> but he's not going? >> he's not going. we are talking about this man. his employees call him yt. he was head of echo. there it is, a massive show in san francisco back in 2016. it was going to make electric cars and televisions. this was a big announcement. promised to be one of the biggest employers in san jose. none of that worked out. they ran out of money. yt has been ordered back to china by chinese security regulators. he says he is going to work in america to work on refinancing that electric car company. wall street was closed monday for the new year's

holiday. last year was the best for stocks since 2013. apple will replace the iphone battery. this is after apple was caught slowing down older phones to make up for declining battery performance. battery replacements are $29, available now in some stores. "playboy" the magazine we read for the articles may close down to concentrate on the brand instead with websites and other properties. they experimented with taking nudity out of the magazine. there was nudity. it didn't work, so they put it back in. now, they are saying maybe because of the internet, this is something we have to rebrand and think of something else. >> now you can't read all those great articles. >> exactly. we'll continue to keep you abreast. >> oh, no. let's move on. we know who will play on the hockey team in the olympics. the san jose sharks are well

for that. heading out to christmas in the park or maybe going back to school today. my son is starting school. itis going to be a mild start. we have 50s right now, mostly clear skies, looking live in the south bay and the tri-valley, on the right side of the screen. it's 44 degrees. the seven day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen showing rain in the forecast. 41 degrees right now in the north bay. i wanted to talk about that rain because we are now in the wettest month of the year. we are starting to see the change in the pattern as we look at how much rain we have measured throughout the past couple of months for the water year and how much we are supposed to get. we should be getting the amount in the blue, but we have only been getting the amount in the yellow. you saw december was extremely dry. and now we are starting to see a couple storm systems lining up out in the pacific. this is the first one that will start to bring rain for

tomorrow. we are starting to see green there on the radar, showing wet weather that will stay offshore. for the most part today, we have an increase in clouds. we start to get the rain by tomorrow afternoon, moving on shore and it will get heavier tomorrow night as we head into thursday, some rounds of rain. kind of off and on, that continues into friday before it clears out saturday. as we look at what we were initially expecting with the first round of rain, the potential of getting close to a half inch of rain in fremont, more than half inch in walnut creek, 3/4 in napa and close to an inch in santa rosa. that is really looking good as far as trying to catch up to normal. we'll still have rain in the forecast heading into late sunday into monday as well. our temperatures will be cooling off as well. it's time to pull out those heavier jackets and dust off the umbrella. i'll be monitoring for a chance of thunder and lightning as well tomorrow, especially during the

afternoon to evening hours. more on that. mike, you are tracking that hazard on the bay bridge? >> that's right. a disabled vehicle i have been watching. i see the lights moving better as they emerge. driving headlights over toward the east bay. we look at the maps. chp says slowing cleared from the treasure island area from eastbound 80. we are seeing the build up toward the bay bridge toll plaza. nothing dramatic right now. we are going to watch more traffic heading into the east bay and around the bay as we return from a lot of folk's vacations. some schools are back today, others have a few more days. a smooth drive on the roadways. a nice, smooth flow of traffic for the rails as well. the north bay, no problems. there's a build starting out of vallejo. it's more than we have seen for a couple weeks. meanwhile, the transit system is

-bay bridge- looking live at the bay bridge, a beautiful sight this morning. it is nice and clear. we have some changes coming up in the forecast. kari has been telling us about that all morning long. we are going to talk with her in a bit. good news for travelers, airports are getting back on track after a temporary computer outage for u.s. customs and border protection. the outage created several hours of long lines. now, this is video from miami international airport. the four-hour outage affected various airports across the country. we spoke to sfo, they experienced a slowdown for an hour, but things are back to normal. >> tough way to end the holiday. a diet rich in soy, broccoli and kale could reduce the side effects of breast cancer treatment. many suffer from hot flashes, night flashes and other

kari hall, before we get to the breaking news. you said rain is coming up in the forecast? >> yes. we have rain, a spare the air alert and return of king tides. a lot to talk about. we have an extreme amount from high tide to low tide and the high tide makes coastal flooding for the coast and the bay. the high tide coming up shortly after 10:00 this morning over seven feet at ocean beach and extreme low tide as we go into the evening. if you are going out there to the coastal trails for this afternoon, we'll be much better after a high tide. we'll see the temperatures reaching the upper 60s in san jose, 68 degrees. mike says the winter break is over. >> whether or not your family is going back to school, if they have school, it's back at the bay bridge and winter break is over for many. seeing a return for the early back up. no metering lights, yet. we don't have a severe back up. the cash lanes are starting to build. i think they just turned the metering lights on minutes ago.

putting out those hot spots. we always talk about when it comes to the big fires. the issue is we are talking about all those card board bail that is caught on fire. that could pose a big issue as they try to put out those hot spots. right now, you are looking at video of the big orange glow. they are the flames when the fire started roughly around 1:00 a.m. that is the information we are getting. at this time, the card board bails in the exterior of this card board manufacturing plant caught on fire. no word on exactly what caused this. we can report that all employees that were working at the plant were evacuated safely. now, moving forward, no threat of the fire spreading. there doesn't appear to be concern over hazardous materials. as you mentioned before, the power poles caught on fire. at least some near the plant. that was an issue. they are saying that is no longer an issue. they are working to stabilize

the power poles. the number of crews here working. power is shut off on this street. i spoke with a santa clara spokesperson. we'll hear more from him in the next hour. pete suratos, "today in the bay." >> thank you. neighbors say two serial thieves are at work breaking into cars there. this is neighborhood surveillance video that shows those thieves in action. this is near the shark tank in san jose. several clips show two men riding up to parked cars on their bikes, smashing the windows and looking through the cars looking for valuables. there were three victims on new year's eve alone. >> riding their bikes and they have a very thought-out routine. they get in and get out quickly. >> they say the car break ins go back to at least november. they plan on give thg video to police to try to crack it.

5:33. new this morning, police are looking for two men involved in a new year's day armed robbery at a gas station. investigators released two surveillance images. take a look here. two masked men who walked into a mobile gas station convenience store last night on oak park bailif boulevard. they spilled cash and other items, then took off on foot. police in the north bay are searching for someone after a road rage shooting incident. listen to this. police say the victim was driving on calistoga road when the suspect pulled up behind him. he noticed the driver was holding a handgun. the victim tried to flee, leading to a chase through several side streets. that victim tells police, that's when the suspect fired at least one shot, hitting the vehicle and then drove away. police say the suspect may be

driving a silver mercedes suv. opening statements in the trial of a san francisco city worker charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter. they believe the employee was in the right to turn left on market and 7th street when he struck a woman in a wheelchair in february, 2016. that woman has a bone disease and died from her injuries. prosecutors determined the city worker was not exempt from turn restrictions at that intersection and recommended charges be filed against him. a manager and head coach are said to talk about a season that ended way better than it started. the team goes into st off season with a five-game win streak. the top priority will be locking up the quarterback leaving garoppolo with a long-term deal. a lot of folks believe by this time next week, raiders

president trump will meet with republican leaders to map out priorities. the house gets back to work next week, the senate returns tomorrow. the other top priority is solving that daca problem. president trump announced the d.r.e.a.m. act saying congress should solve it. everyone in washington says they will do something. so far, nothing. the senate is going to get back to work without senator al franken from minnesota. he is resigning for real today, a month after announcing he would. a developing story worth watching. south korea reached out to north korea and offered talks after north korea said it might be willing to send a team to the upcoming winter olympics in south korea. this would shut out washington and trump, who threatened north korea in a series of tweets.

the rain holds off until tomorrow. as we track the storm system, producing light rain offshore, this will work inland tomorrow. we will have that rain moving in from west to east as we go into tomorrow afternoon. as we take a look at the time line, by tomorrow afternoon at 3:30, we'll start to see that rain developing and continuing off and on through at least early thursday. another round of rain by friday. so, a few waves of this and we'll have a slight chance of a few thunderstorms, especially on wednesday afternoon. with this first round of rain, we are looking at the potential of up to an inch of rain around santa rosa and lacking more than six inches of rain for the last month or so. then, looking at oakland, well, we are maybe going to measure up to an inch of rain. so, it looks good there. there will be another round of rain moving in between sunday and monday. so, more showers and possibly a few thunderstorms, temperatures cooling off. san francisco will be in the

mid-50s this weekend. inland areas go from 67 degrees today to 58 degrees by friday. i'll have more on that and our rain chances coming up. mike is tracking the back up at the bay bridge. >> the bay bridge back up, also a misnomer, the fast track lanes are the slow ones. that's where we have the back up. the cash lanes are holding up. overall, they are seeing a lighter volume. we are easing back into the workweek. some need more easing than others. the fast track back up is past west grand avenue. if you bring cash, that's your edge. use cash and you can get through the toll plaza easily. more travel time from highway 4 to the bay bridge, 17 minutes. it's not bad, but compared to the last couple weeks, an extra three to four minutes. the build is on as you approach the bay bridge. it doesn't reflect the speed sensors in the maze. there's slowing south 680

investigation. now, a developing story out of utah. at least one person is dead and nearly a dozen others hurt after this greyhound bus crashed sunday night. the bus was heading west from green river, utah to las vegas when it drove off the highway. a 13-year-old girl was killed. while the cause of the crash is still under investigation, utah highway patrol officers say a passenger reported a possible medical issue with the driver moments before that crash. happening today, a teenager suspected of a quadruple murder over the holiday weekend will face a new jersey judge today in court. the 16-year-old opened fire with a semi-automatic rifle. he killed his parents, sister and family friend inside the parent's home. the suspect hasn't been identified because of his age. they believe it was a domestic situation. now, the latest developments

the entertainment world. the long time leader of the new york city ballet is retiring amid the accusations of sexual misconduct against him. he announced his retirement. he told board members, he denies sexual harassment. they announced he would take a leave of absence as they investigate the allegations. concord city leaders will vote to change elections. the proposed change is in response to letters from law firms saying the current system dilutes latinos in concord. they believe the change will make it easier for candidates representing smaller districts to be elected. more city workers are hopping on caltrain to ease congestion throughout the city. this is according to a new
