quick look of east bay drive times. westbound 80 from highway 4, toward the bay bridge, you are looking at 14 minutes. westbound 580 toward the bay bridge, 16 minutes. northbound 880 from 238 toward the big bridge, 13 minutes. i keep looking at that bay bridge camera, it looks like those metering lights are on before the 5:00 a.m. hour. you may want to head out now if that's your morning commute. >> thank you. 5:01 now. we want to make sure you know about this developing story. look at your screen. a san jose community is on edge after that man allegedly sexually assaulted and robbed someone at a school. we have been telling you about this since plis released the video of that suspect. this happened at harper middle school in san jose. that man attacked a teacher inside her own classroom before then changing his outfit and running away. we have a crew at the school this morning. we will be there as teachers and students arrive for the day.

romney might run for that seat. we checked his twitter profile and noticed something interesting. the former massachusetts governor, who now lives in utah made a change on tuesday, his profile location is now in utah. a new and disturbing twist in a recent arrest of a north bay man accused of peeping through the bedroom window of an 11-year-old girl. they got him on a misdemeanor charge. they believe he and the girl exchanged numerous messages on snap chat. some were sexual in nature. cortez was rearrested and faces sexual assault charges. the man charged in the deadly christmas eve crash that killed a chp officer is still in the hospital. he may be transferred to santa rita jail tomorrow. >> they identified that man.

he is 22-year-old mohammad of hayward. he smoke marijuana and was drunk before crashing into a parked patrol car on interstate 880, going about 120 miles per hour. this man, chp officer, andrew camilleri, died. >> a quiet guy. it's unfortunate to think something like that would happen to him. >> investigators say he admitted to driving impaired after threatening his wife. before this, he had never been arrested. also, happening today, u.s. figure skating championships began in san jose. >> the ice is ready. this is a time lapse video of the s.a.p. crews spre pairing it. >> the best skaters in the u.s. are in town trying to make it

happen. >> bob redell is live as we look ahead to the competition. a big, exciting day there, bob. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus and kris. within the last 15 minutes, the zamboni finished clearing up the ice at the s.a.p. center. in a couple hours, two hours, at 7:00, the s.a.p. center will open the ice for practice for the athletes competing in the figure skating championship. these are young men and women trying to get a spot on the team to represent the united states during next month's winter olympics in south korea. some of the local athletes we are keeping an eye on, vincent joe, alex benoit, her partner. this is a big deal for san jose, hosting the championships for the first time ever in an olympic year. it's a big deal for 1988 gold medalist. he grew up here in the south bay, spent the day showing off the best san jose restaurants to

we'll speak with the winner of the junior division in this year's figure skating championship. it's a young woman from richmond. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> we love to see those young athletes grow up and blossom. thank you so much, bob. happening today, from frozen ice to frozen water to liquid water, window opens for what may be the most famous big wave surf contest anywhere in the world. it is mavericks in half-moon bay. it's only happened occasionally the last few years because of contest ownership on shady ground and partly because of the weather. mavericks is being organized by the world surf league. it has been renamed, also, as the maverick's challenge. this year's window closes at the end of february. you know by now, competitors from around the world have three days notice to get themselves

this hour. 5:15 right now. this morning, a lawsuit that could impact the way you listen to music. a music publisher paid spotify $1.6 million. they allege the music service streamed millions of unlicensed songs in massive systematic fringes. 6 million spotify songs are not licensed. spotify tells nbc news the company has no comment. amazon says more people paid for prime than years past. they have not given an exact number of how many use it, but amazon does say it ships 5 billion items to prime customers. amazon announced november 30th was the biggest streaming day for the company. new this morning, we learned a former heavyweight champion, mike tyson is getting in on the

bottom of the screen, the temperatures will be cooling off over the next few days. we are going to make it up to 65 degrees today even with all the clouds and 59 in oakland. 59 degrees in san francisco. in concord today, look for a high of 62 degrees. we are looking at more clouds. here is the storm system that will be approaching. we can see the rain ahead of the area of low pressure. as that moves in, we will also have the chance of thunderstorms. now, a lot of lightning has been offshore. there will be a slight chance we'll have enough energy in the atmosphere as that moves in that we could see isolated lightning strikes making it inland. we are looking at the time line of the rain and when we'll see the showers moving in. the dark green shows heavy downpours. the yellows and reds show intense rain. we will see a few pockets of that heavy rain moving in in time for the evening commute. so, expect it to take longer to get home today and then by this evening, we'll start to see the showers becoming a little more

hit or miss variety and then we start out tomorrow morning with the mainly dry conditions. there will be a chance of rain throughout the day, then it increases for tomorrow afternoon. still scattered showers in the forecast. another round of rain possible on friday moving in in the morning and clearing as we head into friday evening. a couple waves of rain and with this system moving in, there will be the possibility of getting over an inch of rain in santa rosa. the rainfall totals go up with each run of the commuter model. a quarter inch, up to a half inch for the bay area, south of the golden gate bridge. our temperatures cooling off, upper 50s for san francisco the next few days. it will be a mostly dry we could. saturday, the all dry day, a chance of showers late sunday. monday, looking pretty good. then another chance of rain next tuesday, while the inland areas will be cooling off with mid-60s

expect throughout the day a little later. a new video overnight of a fire that injured six firefighters and one police officer in new york city. the fire ripped through three apartment buildings in brooklyn. three of the injured firefighters were hurt when a stairway collapsed. none of the injuries is considered life threatening. a cause for the fire has not been determined. also this morning, the president of the mormon church has died. he died late tuesday at his home in salt lake city. he led the church since 2008. one of the main changes that he made was lowering the age of full-time missionaries in order to boost enrollment from younger men and women. new video this morning of the procession honoring the fallen san bruno sheriff's deputy last night. the 70-year-old died on tuesday. he was violently attacked

following a minor crash. he was off duty sunday morning when he and another vehicle collided in san bernardino. the officials say they made contact and the other driver ran him down. the driver was arrested and faces several criminal charges. a mountainview restaurant is supposed to reopen after thieves strike an atm in a smash and grab robbery. this happened early yesterday morning at the michael's restaurant on shoreline boulevard. someone used a stolen truck to smash through the stoldoors andb the atm. they found the atm in a separate location. it had been torched and broken apart with the cash inside long gone. coming up, a south bay community on high alert this morning. are you going to feel safe until this guy is caught? >> no, i won't.

him walking around slowly here on campus grounds before he carried out or allegedly carried out that attack. according to san jose police, the assault happened yesterday morning around 6:30 a.m., an hour before students arrived here on campus for classes. police say he robbed and sexually assaulted the teacher alone at the time inside her classroom. they are hoping the video you are looking at will catch the suspect. in the meantime, it has rez don'ts in the area concerned. >> most of the times i'm alone. sometimes in the morning, sometimes in the evening. >> now, it's more scary to know because we have winter break going on for our kids. i don't feel safe. >> reporter: going to show you that video one more time. you can see him there, described as a heavy set hispanic man wearing dark jeans, a black shirt and black beanie.

police are doing patrols outside and they will increase the security there on campus. if you have information to help out with the case, contact police. pete suratos, "today in the bay." >> so many teachers work before school and after school on their own. that's so scary. hopefully they find him. thank you, pete. also happening today, the head of the homeland security department is set to be here in the bay area, visiting neighbors like these, devastated by the north bay wildfires. the secretary is set to get an update. we plan to talk to her in can ta rosa as well. president trump approved a major disaster declaration for the areas of the wildfires for 44 of our friends and neighbors died and more than 5,000 homes were destroyed. bay area district leaders are investigating a flair incident in richmond. the airmanagement district says

they briefly exceeded state limits. it happened around 8:30. the air district received at least one resident complaint. they stay flairing did not exceed their own or federal limits, only those set by the state. a first of five scheduled snow surveys in sierra. this is the traffic camera in that area. we are doing a survey of our own, looking good. phillips station is where tahoe resort is. they will measure hundreds of sights during the winter and spring as they do every year and then use that data to predict run off from the mountains and that paints the picture of a potential threat. after one of the driest bay area december's on record, they hope the snow arriving will add to the rainfall totals. compared to this time last year, water levels were way down. that includes anderson dam in

morgan hill, which opened its spillways last january. right now, they are at 25% capacity. water agencies say the next three months are crucial to helping maintain healthy water reserve. >> we get most of our rainfall in january through march. it's early to call it a dry winter. we are off to a slow start, that's for sure. >> they are keeping a watch on the winter rainfall numbers. no one is throwing around the dreaded "d" word yet. last year, the bay area emerged from a five-year drought. raiders fans, seems all the talk of john gruden coming back isn't just talk. yes, he is being considered for the raiders top coaching job. it would be a full circle move for gruden who last coached the raiders in 2001. he was traded for draft picks back-to-back. he is expected to call the wild

at the time who may have seen something. there is no information about the suspect's vehicle. pleasanton police are looking for burglars caught on surveillance trying to break into a home. they look to be dressed as construction workers. they knocked on the front door. when no one answered, they went around back to open the slider but were unsuccessful. students are heading back to school after the devastating lilac fire in san diego county. this comes less than a month after the wildfires chewed through more than 4,000 acres. the fire prompted school closures. four schools reopened in the area yesterday. hard to imagine anything the president tweets could shock anyone, anymore. >> scott mcgrew, he managed to do it. >> he did. he led conservatives to call for him to step down this morning. this, after a tweet about the size of his nuclear button.

morning, 47 degrees in san jose with the high temperatures today 65 degrees. the seven day forecast is up at the bottom of the screen showing several days of rain chances, especially as we head into the next couple days. now, we will be up to 62 degrees in napa. 62 in concord and 60 degrees in santa rosa. as you are getting dressed, you are looking out the window, standing in the closet, what should i wear. have a coat and we already talked about the umbrella. as we head out the door, the temperatures are getting milder. light long sleeves, boots will be an option once the rain comes down. have on shoes that will keep your feet nice and dry and warm. now, the rain is rolling up from the south with this disturbance that is moving closer. we are seeing those clouds moving in. as the rain moves in, there will be the potential of lightning strikes. we have seen that offshore. there will be the chance to cena working its way inland with

enough energy in the atmosphere for lightning strikes. the rain is moving in. here is the time line, 1:00 this afternoon. we see yellows and reds there. that shows we have the potential of heavy downpours. that may be brief. it looks widespread as far as the rain coverage. what the radar could look like by 3:00 this afternoon, but it will be heavier as we go into that evening commute and still looks like we could have rounds of heavy rain from 8:00 to 9:00 with rain hitting the roof and gusty winds picking up at times. as we look at how much rain we could see between now and early saturday, we are going to have the possibility of over an inch and a half of rain for santa rosa. there will be a few rounds of rain. the rainfall totals could reach a quarter inch for most of the east bay and south bay. .75 inch in san francisco.

it's been a while since we have had rain totals like that. doesn't look like it will cause problems. we dry out saturday and a slight chance of rain late sunday. most of the weekend looks dry and another chance of rain on tuesday. temperature wise, mid-60s to upper 60s this weekend. as we head to vianey arana, any issues on the road? >> no issues, but it's safe to say, don't wash your car. you will be mad. kari warned you. an overall look at the bay area, we have managed to maintain this quiet outlook on the roads. chp hasn't reported major accidents. i have an update as far as mass transit goes. bart not showing delays. 46 trains up and running. caltrain, you have to remember that hillsdale lot is closed, which is that parking lot. if that's where you typically park, you have to make for other arrangements. you have to go online and check

goals, you haven't achieved, it's not achievable, yet. you haven't achieved your other goals, which is what? >> triple axel. i got better skating skills, it's not what i wanted, but pretty good. >> reporter: how close are you to a triple axel? >> well, i worked on it. i actually landed one under, so almost. then i lost my double axel because i was working on triple axel. so i stopped working on triple axel for nationals. yeah. >> reporter: will you be able to enjoy the competition this week or do you have to start training again? >> today, i'm going to enjoy the competition and watch championship ladies and championship men this week. >> reporter: who do you look up to here at the s.a.p. center who is competing this week and what do you hope to learn from them? >> i look up to brian, the one who is competing because she has triple axel.
