and marcus. >> you can see the interview coming up at 7:00 on the "today" show right after this newscast. breaking news out of newark, new jersey, where the firefighters are battling a massive fire in a building that spread to other buildings. cars have been burned and two firefighters have been injured. one slipped on ice, and another hel rpd from the scene. and now, the frozen an windy conditions are making a difficult for firefighters, because they say they have limited access to water. >> and happening today, the man accused in the pier 39 terror plot is due in court. 26-year-old everson jamison is expected to be arraigned in fresno, and the u.s. attorney's office is now going to include a bomb charge, and according to the court documents jamison intend intended to use homemade pipe bombs to funnel the people on pier 39 where he then planned to shoot them.

jamison was arrested after talking about his plan to undercover agents. and the three jail guards who beat a santa clara inmate to death is expected to be sentenced today. the jurors convicted rafael rodriguez, and that was second degree murder of this man, michael tyree. he die d in his cell at 2015 at the county's main jail and the death sparked massive reforms in the santa clara prison system. as for the guard, each faces 15 years to life in prison. >> one person dead in a multiple car crash in vallejo. it happened after 5:00 p.m. on sonoma boulevard near cheery street. they say that two cars crashed headon and the passenger in one of the cars died at the scene. it is looking more and more like june, motorists will be

deciding on a toll hike for the bay bridge. the transportation leaders will be holding a final vote next week, and then that hike would roll out in three phases. we reported this as well if voters a approve it. the tolls would go$is next year, and then another dollar in 2022 and then another dollar in 2025 except for the golden bridge which is not owned by the state. and cleanup is expected to ramp up over the coming weeks from last year's deadly firestorm. thanks to in part a recent $475 million federal contract for a burli burlingame company who are expected to complete the cleanup in two months. today, marin county firefighters are going to conduct a controlled burn. so if you see the smoke in the area, it is expected to happen

on the comedy side the social sat ire "get out" and "lady bird" and the golden globes love to honor new shows which could be good like "handma maid's tal and the other newcomers in the category. and that is sunday where coverage starts at 4:00 sunday. and tomorrow morning not so much, and it is because we will have a cold front moving in, so it is going to be warmer as the warm air brushes into that, and we are are also seeing the scattered showers being fired up as well. we are not going to have some times of rain, and as we get a look at the radar now, you can see that most of the rain has been over the parts of the north bay and northern sonoma county and normarin county and rolling back into san francisco, too, but as we are getting a live

look outside in san jose, it is dry, and may stay drier to a little bit longer, and as we are check out the temperature trend, upper 50s and mostly cloudy skies and in the mid-60s today, and some of the showers are starting to fall around 11:00. we will have the high temperatures around the bay area reaching into the mid-60s for the south bay, and upper 50s for santa the rosa and napa, and 61 degree, and if you will be traveling today as we are looking at the high temperatures across the country, it is only going to be in the single digits in detroit today. and newark city is bitterly cold behind the nor'easter which dumped a lot of snow in the northeast and for the northeast as we are getting a look at what is happening here. the light showers are starting to move in, and in is a fairly week system to bring in hit or miss showers throughout the day, and looking at the time line at 8:30 this morning, and some of the showers are moving through parts of the east bay, and then also, a chance of rain as we are

in a few hours the sentencing hearing here at the hall of justice and the big question is what you mentioned will the judge grant a new trial when it co comes to the weapons possession for jose ines garcia zarate who was acquitted in the shooting of kate steinle in pier 39 shooting. the judge decided he was not guilty of murder or manslaughter charges, and they dispute that he has possession of the firearm, and the jury was not informed of the transitory possession. that he held it briefly, but not enough to hold it possession. the retrial would be bogus says the judge. but the weapons con vviction gog to be staying unchanged, but he expects the arguments over jury instructions to continue. >> i believe there is a real

two men are tied to a fire inside of an east bay business. these are the images of the men they are looking for. and investigators sayly started fire inside of a business two days before christmas on niles road. they say that the two suspects in the picture may be brothers. and now some insurance companies are backing a wway fr offering coverage to some california homeowners in fire-prone areas. the state insurance commissioner said that thousands of policies were denied renewal which was a jump of 15%, and now likely more higher after the massive wildfires last year. 6:34 and happening now, the california highway patrol is going to welcome in the newest officers officers. in total 108 new cadets will be sworn in. it wraps up 28 weeks of intense training, and they will serve

going to the nbc bayarea.com website and clicking on olympics. the traffic all morning long has been very good. our speed sensors are picking up the slowing near santa cruz, and there was a downed tree causing a pole to fall over, but now, it looks like we are still seeing the delays here at a summit road which is typical for this ear a ya to get congestion and especially if something bad happens in that area. now, right here outside towards oakland, this is a typical area to be seeing the heavy buildup, and that is what is happening, and checking out the bridges, and the san mateo bridge has not seen the mayor or minor incidents, because it has managed to stay clear all morning long. >> also great news there.

just yet in san jose. as we are going through the neighborhood of santa teresa, the rain is going to hold off until later in the morning with mostly cloudy skies. we will talk about what is ahead in the weekend and what is ahead in five minutes. right now in san jose, you can see plenty of traffic building up now, and you can see reporting the traffic collision, and many concord where that is, and who might be affected. >> thank you, vianey. and new this morning a disturbing story out of michigan where an airplane passenger woke up to find a man sexually assaulting her midnight. prosecutors say it happened on a spirit airlines flight from las vegas to detroit. she says that she was asleep in a window seat, and when she woke up, she was groped by the man next to her. and that man is being arrested and held without bail when they landed. and people are in shock over this story, that they say that,

police say that this man walked into a home and sexually assaulted an 8-year-old girl sleeping. police in rohnert park says that noah holland took a garage door opener from the unlocked car, and then entered the home on francis circle and went into the bedroom where the 8-year-old girl was asleep and took off his clothing and sexually assaulted her. the neighbors are very shaken up. >> the kids are always running around on the scooters and the bikes, and so we would not expect that. people are sick. >> the crucial clue to help the officers track down the suspect was from the suspect himself, baecause the girl screamed and her mother came in and the suspect abruptly left, but he left all of the personal belongings behind in the process. >> 6:45, the coverage of the uptick of flu in california. the flu season according to experts is in full swing. some bay area medical centers

are taking the full precautions. influenza is spiking unusually early, and already four flu-related deaths this season. and two south bay hospitals are going to start restricting the visitors under the age of 16, but in general, the hospitals say they are prepared. across the state, there are 17 people uncan der the age of 65 who have died from the flu this season. >> despite the abrupt policy change on marijuana enforcement, most cities including san francisco don't appear to be changing course. attorney general jeff sessions rescinded the obama administration policy on leniency regard ing ting the recreational use of marijuana. the new regulations are expected to take place saturday. >> and today, a tell-all book

>> no, it is a warmer storm. but maybe next week it is looking more promising for the sierra snow, but for right now, it is just the rain. looking at the green on the map, that is mostly for marin county and sonoma county, and san francisco county here where we are seeing the showers rolling through, and crossing the bay to the are richmond and san rafael bridge and some of the heavier downpours there. we will see the rain rolling off to the north and east, and the temperatu temperatures are going to be reaching the low to mid 60s. and in livermore and san jose, 59, and the seven-day forecast is up at the bottomf screen to show the temperatures cooling off as it going to dry out over the next couple of days. but you want to prepare for the rain today and as we start out in the closet, get the rain jacket, and the boots and the umbrella, and all of that to stay dry. some of the showers that may not but falling right now, but they will be moving through as the day goes along, and as we get a look at the rain, as we take ti

throughout the day, the time line is going to show the showers of the north bay, and the coast from 9:00 to 10:00 through the day, it is hit or miss scattered showers, and maybe not making it to san jose until later this evening, and the rainfall totals reaching a quarter of inch with the latest round ashgts and the much lighter amounts as you go to the east bank. so after this amount moves out, it is dry, and next week, another round of rain moves in, and this is promising once again for the sierra snow, and heavier rain for the bay area, and this could be another atmospheric river, and we have not seen a lot of them throughout the rain season, and we could have a better boost of the rainfall totals headed into next week. i will be watching that for you, and temperatures are cooling off as well. let's head over to vianey with the traffic. >> yes, the green on my map is green to go.
