area. there are a couple crashes to the north and we'll check out santa rosa and i'll let you know how that is. and i want to bring our friend from an jose. it is wet. what are you dealing with this morning? >> yeah, my drive down 101 to get to downtown san jose saw a lot of drivers on the road people leaving earlier knowing the commute is going to be a mess. it's kind of quiet and the rain starting to come down a little heavier and get rough later through the morning. so, we saw moderate to heavy rains on the road. we did run into pockets of standing water oon the freeway. as the commute builds this morning, remember, so will the rain. it's important to plan accordingly. chp wants to remind all drivers, give other vehicles one to two extra seconds of follow time in the rain. that gives you and the cars behind you more time to react to
4:33 am
traffic. remember in california, you must drive with your lights on, even in brought daylight and, for example, if your brake lights are out, it puts you and other drivers at risk. and we know it's going to be raining hard this morning. it's the first rain of the season. so, know that your traffic and your commute will likely be a nightmare. so, allow for extra commute time. in addition to poor visibility that comes with the heavy rain, just a real threat of hyd hydroplaning which happens when people drive too fast. chp also advising do not drive with cruise control on. we'll continue to monitor the traffic out here all morning and reporting live in downtown san jose, "today in the bay." >> thank you. my mom always used to make sure you can see the car's tires in front of you to make sure you have enough room. critical in the north bay and we'll keep an eye on this. this will likely be the strongest storm since the deadly fire storm since last november.

4:46 am
the sierra snow pack only 3% of normal this year. the most snow expected to fall near yosemite. i was up in the tahoe area and there was nothing. i mean, there was a lot of rain which is nice, but, you know, it was tough up there. 3%. >> wow. >> that's really bad. >> you can see all the grass around it. >> this is still fairly warm snow and it will take a while before the snow levels start to drop. that is what we will be watching over the next few days and only snow in the high sierra and for us it is going to be a lot of rain, too. we are already seeing that. and you don't see any snow falling yet in the sierra. it's all rain at this point. we're also getting in on some heavier pockets of some of those showers as you get ready to head out on this monday morning. a lot of people heading back to school and as you get a look at what we are seeing now, we see the yellows and the reds there.
4:47 am
that indicates some heavier rain now moving into san jose. and also up around milpitas, as well. you're hearing the rain hitting the roof and the windows and you do want to make sure you're prepared for that. we're also starting to see the radar filling in for the south county and little bit of a break from the rain there and also light. i also queried how much rain is coming down in some of the heavier pockets of rain just south of palo alto and the rainfall rate quarter in of rain per hour and pretty good amount could cause puddles out there on the road as you drive. as you go up the peninsula heading up to 80, also really wet and then up 101 and to the north bay. san rafael getting in some really heavy rain just south of novato, as well. then we go to the north bay with a steady downpour that continues over towards napa, as well. with the steady countpour mostly dpre green here on the radar and just
4:48 am
north of walnut creek 0.02 per hour. we're also seeing some of the heavier pockets of rain driving around 84. so, here is our main concerns today. there will be heavier rain and we will really have to closely watch those burn scar areas for the possibility of some debris run off. we will have some gusty winds at times. and there will be a chance that we could have some tree damage or a power outages and a slight chance of some isolated thunder as we go into this afternoon. we also have a flash flood watch in effect for all of these areas shaded in green in the north bay, especially those burn scar areas. where, once again, we could have some debris flows and mudslides. getting dressed this morning, a good idea to have all the rain gear and everything you need from a rain jacket to an umbrella. also, you want to make sure you're staying warm with these cool temperatures. pants or jeans a good option to help stay dry and, also, the rain boots. got the cute ones there breaking those out of the closet.
4:49 am
so, we will have a day where you have to make sure you're ready for whatever comes your way, including gusty winds. a wind advisories in effect for pretty much all of the bay area and this is where we will have most sustained winds at 30 to 40 miles per hour. but in the mountains we may have winds gusting at 45 to possibly 60 miles per hour. watching the santa cruz mountains could bring down some trees and also have power impacts and a high wind warning in effect for selenis and monterey counties. here's a look at how the rainfall continues. we are starting to see rain picking up at 9:00 this morning. that's when many more people will be up and out and about and a lot of red and yellows indicating heavy rain and then start to see it tapering off, but still some pockets of heavy downpours as we go into this evening. rainfall totals at this point look like it could reach pretty much over an inch for all the bay area between today and tomorrow and then until it
4:50 am
finally wraps up on wednesday. after this system moves through, we'll have some drier air moving in and a chance to dry out from the soggy conditions at least throughout the weekend. so, your seven-day forecast shows that we will have some temperatures holding steady in the upper 50s to low 60s. some clearing after tomorrow. i think late tomorrow night we won't see that rain moving out until then. and then for the rest of the week, we will have a chance to warm up just a bit just in time for saturday. as we head over to mike, a number of crashes in the east bay. >> kari, they all popped up and in the oakland area and crash across the santa cruz mountains look like they're slowing and one crash on the shoulder from redwood estates and new crash at 85 and clearing some lanes very quickly. i'll let chp work on that and more information coming up. that will slow you down towards mountain view. this was slowing through oakland and piedmont and lake shore avenue. i just got word all lanes

4:52 am
from those single-digit temperatures that left many places frozen for days now. the freeze is apparently going out with a bang providing one more round of new record lows in many cities over the weekend. not just cold either. also freezing rain making driving conditions very dangerous. coastal erosion from rising sea levels could wipe out more than a mile and a half of the coastline before the end of the century. that is the finding by researchers in southern california. being reported by the press democrat this morning. the same study finds that erosion is causing cliffside areas to recede by as much as a foot per year. coming up next on "today in the bay" a new approach to the opioid crisis sweeping the nation. comes with piles of paperwork and the consumer investigator says that one fee is negotiable. >> it's one of the few things we are forced to buy when we're signing all those papers. we have no idea how it works and
