"today in the bay" continues right now. a very good monday morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. as you saw, we are starting out wet this morning. slick roads and mike will get to that in just a moment. but right now talking about the winds. >> we need that rain, but we don't need the problems that go along with it. we will see is it starting out slow and steady and then picking up as we go into late morning and early afternoon. we have seen some pockets of some of the heavy rain starting to shift into the peninsula. parts of marin county and extending over towards the east bay where you see all the yellow. where we zoom into the south bay, we're getting a steady rain moving through and a lot of yellows moving into san francisco right now and extending over towards oakland. we will have a flash flood watch in effect starting at noon and continuing into early tomorrow morning for those burn scar areas where we may have some

debris flows and mudslides. rain will be very heavy at times and a wind advisory also kicking in for this afternoon, as the wind pick up to about 40 to possibly 50 miles per hour. and some of the higher elevations. so, a possible impact as a storm continues to move into the bay area. and, also, a look at when it moves out. mike, you have a traffic alert. >> i do, kari. one of the earlier crashes we talked about. sig alert for the area and major impact which we have seen and we have talked about. 101 for san jose. a lot more storms than we've seen over the last three weeks. the build for the tri-valley and east bay for hayward and this is a huge problem. west 24 at college avenue. we have a crash and you have three of oyour four lanes in the westbound commute direction and backed up and west 580 getting over towards the maze. 880 itself that is the best route right now coming up

through oakland. look at that. the shortest travel time. the two routes 580 and 24 heading over towards the maze and cover slightly different routes. but if you're using options through the area, this will ripple out through the approach towards the maze. we'll track that, as well, as the bay bridge toll plaza which is filled in with all the cars and look at the rain and slippery conditions. for more on the conditions, i'll hand it back to you guys. >> looks like everyone is back there. we have team coverage of that storm hitting the bay area and the impact it will have on your morning commute. >> let's check in with "today in the bay" live anser hassan. >> good morning. the rain has let up a little bit. we came down 101 to get to downtown san jose. already seen pockets of moderate to heavy rain. streets of downtown san jose you can see pockets of water on the roadway and that is a concern for hydroplaning. it's already been an issue on

the roads this morning. this is new video into the newsroom. let's show you mercedes went off the roadway and hit a telephone pole in los gatos. the driver suffered minor injuries but his car was totaled when it hydroplaned. >> heading southbound going on 17 and hit the summit exit curve and hydroplaned about 30 feet out there. and ended up rolled over a tree pole. everyone in the car was okay gladly. just got to get a new car now. >> wants to warn drivers all it takes is one 12th of an inch on the road and speeds of more than 35 miles per hour to put you at risk for hydroplaning. if you start to hydroplane. slowly and take your foot off the accelerator and steer straight until you regain

control. a few other important tips in driving in the rain this morning. give other vehicles more space. they say add one to two seconds of extra time while driving in the rain. that keeps you and the car business hind you more time to react to the traffic and you have to turn on your lights. in california, you must drive with your lights on even in broad daylight. so, it's a good idea to test your lights before you hit the road. for example, if your brake lights are out, it puts you and other drivers at risk. now, we know it's going to be raining hard this morning. it's the first rain of the season. so, you know traffic and your commute will be a nightmare. so, allow for extra time. chp also wants to warn drivers to turn off cruise control. they say if your car starts to hydroplane while your cruise control is on. you may actually start to go faster. so, some important tips to remember as you hit the roads this morning. going to be a wet and crazy commute. reporting live in san jose, i'm anser hassan, "today in the

it happened late last night while the deputy was chasing a pair of burglars. 12 miles south of tacoma. authorities later found one of the suspects dead from gunfire. he may have been shot by the deputy, who was killed. the other gunman still on the loose. and a lot of celebrities this morning still celebrating after the 75th annual golden globes. it comes amid the sexual harassment scandal plaguing the entertainment industry. >> nearly everyone wore black to the award show in honor of the me, too campaign. kris sanchez joins us with some of the highlights from last night. >> this is what folks are talking about. they'll be talking about it for different reasons, too. including the stand that so many stars took on that sexual misconduct in hollywood. the tone was evident on the red carpet. the stars arrived in black, as you mentioned, laura seth meyers

wolf made about how we all think about the president is just ridiculous. >> again, many republicans want to focus on the agenda. immigration talks with democrats resume at the white house tomorrow. lawmakers have just over two weeks to reach a budget deal. 6:09 right now and back to our microclimate weather alert this morning. we track that storm hitting the bay area. on your left live camera from san rafael and on your right, all covered in green. the radar as we track exactly where that rain is hitting right now. let's check in with meteorologist kari hall tracking the timing of this one. >> it's pretty much rain everywhere right now. we'll see this throughout the day and even tomorrow as our first moderate atmospheric river of the season begins to move in. now, that is just a steady stream of moisture and also seeing that in san jose with moderate downpour there. we had much of the bay area already measuring a quarter of an inch of rain or more and we have a lot more of this storm to

go. so from pedals on the road and heaviest rain moving through san francisco right now and we will, at times, have the rain picking up in intensity in some of those areas where we will have some gusty winds. look at 10:30 this morning. a lot of yellow and reds showing heavy rain and it will continue as we go throughout the day with a chance of some isolated thunderstorms, as well. even into this afternoon and into the evening, it is still going to be soggy with raves of rains rolling on through. we will see this lasting until about tomorrow night. and then it finally tapers off. so, we'll talk more about the rainfall totals expected coming up in about four minutes and, mike, you're still tracking the two big jams in the east bay. >> that's right, kari. pretty much those two being the worst and the rest of the bay is building, but nothing exceptional right now. we're looking at west 24. the sig alert that continues by chp and that was called earlier. the jam now out of the caldecutt

tunnel and tow truck should be arriving on scene any minute and west 80 getting over towards grand avenue. a crash blocked two lane there's. they just cleared one more and now a slower drive there. both of those are major roadways getting over towards the maze. meanwhile highway interstate 880 is moving smoothly. that is actually great as far as is the traffic slows. do be careful. here's the comparison. 880 versus 580 getting over towards the maze and highway 84. the two areas that i told you about with the crashes and the rest of the may moves well. and down the east shore freeway still under a half hour. that's good for berkeley and richmond. back to you. it's 6:11 right now. coming up on "today in the bay" a fire ravaged southern california and now more concern as the rain is coming down. what homeowners and burn areas are watching for.

and east downtown san jose, puddles on the streets. los gatos in the mid-50s for and upper 50s today and a lot more rain where that came from. we'll see these downpours for the next 36 hours talking more about the timeline coming up in about five minutes. and we're looking at a san mateo bridge. the live look shows you traffic building. that was more slowing heading to the peninsula side. meanwhile, getting over towards oakland and the bay bridge. a couple major tough spots and we'll talk about those coming up. >> sounds good, thank you so much, kari and mike. new concerns for the same areas hit by last month's massive wildfire in southern california. heavy rains could lead to potential flooding and mudslides. some of the hardest hit burn areas are now under mandatory evacuation orders. that includes parts of santa barbara county. other areas are under voluntary evacuation orders.

morning. the dow crossed 25,000 for the first time last week. 25,295 this morning. this comes as the jobs number on friday showing unemployment stays at 4.1%. other important detail, unemployment for african-americans now the lowest it's ever been since the government started measuring. one minor quival, the number of jobs created continues to slow a bit. normally we would ignore this minor fact, it's all good news. president trump keeps saying the president is getting better under his presidency than obama. when it comes to the job growth year over year, that's not true. again, we probably ignore it except we have to correct the president. >> all right, thank you very much, scott. back to our microclimate alert this morning. taking a live look outside from our camera overlooking san francisco. can you make it out? kind of a soggy start across the bay area. >> and a lot of people heading back to work today affan extended vacation and kids back

to school. pull out the jacket and make sure the names are on them so they come home. >> need the rain jackets and the boots to keep those feet dry. a day where you do have to make sure you're prepared with all of the layers and lugging things around. but we absolutely cannot complain about this rain we so desperately need with santa rosa lacking over 8 1/2 inches of rain to catch up with normal. that is a lot of rain. so, we start to see this moving, we are like, okay. we can deal with this. now, we are going to continue to see these showers moving again. at times it will get heavier. receive the yellows here on the radar and that indicates where the heaviest rain is now. and it is moving across san francisco with the steady downpour still happening in san jose. we've gotten about 0.03 of rain so far. we continue to add it up for the south county a lot wider. the rain is starting to pick up now as you get ready to head out the door. driving out the peninsula doesn't matter. 101, 280 all going to be wet.

as we get into south san francisco into the city, we are going to have some really heavy rain here for the next few minutes and that extends over towards oakland. mill valley seeing some heavy rain right there on 101. that will be moving up towards san rafael in the next few minutes and we're also seeing the rain picking up for much of sonoma and napa counties, as well. where we are seeing pretty good covage of green here indicating moderate rain. that will continue for a lot longer as we go into the rest of the morning and early afternoon. so, here is our main concern at this point. the heavy rain that will be picking up by later this morning for those burn scar areas in the north bay. there may be some debris run off and the wind picking up at times, too. i do expect the winds to pick up shortly after noon and that may bring down some trees and also cause some power outages. make sure you have everything ready just in case the power does go out. we may also have some isolated thunder. as we go through the rest of the day, here is a look at how the day may shape up on the radar

showing yellows and reds here. really heavy rain by 10:00 to 11:00 this morning. and then there will be waves of heavy rain moving through. at least early afternoon and it continues into this afternoon and to the evening and by tonight. still raining across the bay area. this rain is not going to get out of here until late tomorrow night. after that we will have a drying trend over the next several days with some sunshine and temperatures gradually warming up when we look at the possibility of getting three ins of rain in the santa cruz mountains and much of the bay area measuring at least an inch of rain, maybe an inch and a half. i'll have more on that. mike, you're still saying the worst of the commute is in the east bay. >> that's right, kari. the conditions are bad as far as the traction. wet conditions mean tougher traction and that means you have to slow it down. and slowing for the trivalley and 880 through hayward and this portion of the east bay right here. this sig alert continues and chp says three lanes are still blocked over there at college

avenue. chp says, also, that tow truck should be arriving any second and starting way back here with the build off the walnut creek interchange. that is very tough for 24. also very slippery. be kafl. west 24 improves a little bit. the earlier crash there now only blocks one lane and still west 588 grand avenue. that is a slower drive. that reflects upon your travel times getting over through that area. 880 a little slower and more traffic there for the nimts and smoother flow for 580 and one lane is still blocked there. now, mass transit not experiencing any major problems. b.a.r.t. still reports no delays although sometimes they have to slow and the south bay, the live look san jose dealing with a slight build for the commute and conditions all around the bay. back to you. >> all right, thank you, mike. 6:21 right now and coming up next on "today in the bay" countdown to the olympics. bay area athletes who are hoping for gold in south korea. but, first, buying a home

the average price the rain coming down this morning and the gas prices, unfortunately, going up. the latest survey industry shows it rose 3 cents nationwide mostly because of higher crude oil costs. current price, 16 cents higher than it was this time last year. and taking a look at gas prices right here here in the bay area. a gallon of regular gas is oakland $3.15 and san jose and in san francisco 3.27. one month from today on february 8th, u.s. olympic games begin right here on nbc bay area. and after that exciting finish at the u.s. figure skating championship, both men and women's teams are locked in. >> the men's team will include a bay area skater vincent zhou is

back to work and the kids headed back to school and thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we want to go to meteorologist kari hall tracking the wet conditions for us. >> as we get ready to head out on this monday morning, really good to see the rain considering how dry it has been but makes it it more treacherous as you get out there on the roadways. rain in san francisco and parts of the north bay with steady rain all around the bay area. san jose seeing the heavier downpours coming up 101 right as you get past evergreen and going past 82. also for the south county we are seeing a steady rain getting going in the last 30 minutes. also seeing a lot of greens here indicating moderate rain, but look at those bright yellows over san francisco. showing those rainfall rates that have been coming down almost half an in of rain per hour to expect standing water in low lying areas and also continues as you go across the golden gate bridge. also at 101 and san rafael and

going across that richmond, san rafael bridge. as we look at what's happening in the north bay. sonoma county seeing some pockets of heavy rain moving towards santa rosa and napa county and then also seeing a steady rain from american canyon down to vallejo and also into much of the east bay into the tri-valley. so, the isis going to is is goi for quite a while and concern of flooding as we look at the north bay. the area shaded in green, that is where we will have a flash flood watch in effect. especially for the burn scar area. the concern of debris flows and mudslides. we'll talk about the winds picking up as we go through the day and the wind advisory when it goes in effect in about five minutes. mike, you have a big crash on highway 24? >> we are continuing to follow that, kari. the update from chp is that at least one tow truck has arrived to help with the situation. the south bay starts to build and wet roadways all around the bay with the green highlighting and more traffic in the east bay

through hayward and across the san mateo bridge. that is getting back to your typical patterns as folks are returning back to work and all schools should be back in as far as the public schools go. all the way out of walnut creek through lafayette and a second crash and the big u.n. wione we following still four out of your five lanes are blocked that is the big jam out of this area. recovery for 580 after the earlier crash cleared. here are your travel times. not a bad deal for 580 now that it is recovering and the east shore freeway getting towards the bay bridge. still from highway 4 about half an hour. maybe 35 minutes now. but look at all this rain coming down. now, the crash on highway 24 makes things lighter on the left approach. at least one benefit for some folks but that big gem out of lafayette and walnut creek we're tracking that guy. back to you. powerful storm is really pounding the bay area, but also concern in the north bay for those burn scar areas.

this is a new interactive map showing the areas where there's most concern. yellow indicates the least. red is the most. >> "today in the bay" live in fountain grove neighborhood this morning and an area listed in the orange on that map and, pete, i know crews have been working there for months now. been another disaster and you've seen that rain this morning. what are things starting to look like? >> we are getting off and on rain here in the area of santa rosa. look, this is a concern, particularly, because it sits on top of a hill here. there are concerns of potential mudslide with the rain and wind coming into the area. i want to show you guys what they have been able to compare so far in the last two months and we have seen in place and really around those burn area where a number of homes were destroyed as a result of the wildfires. and over the past few months, guys, the process has been two-fold. right? they had to clear out all the debris from these neighborhoods

and particularly where we're standing, as well as toffee park and they don't want to block any of that ash from getting into the rivers and streams. and, thankfully, hasn't been raining the past few months. it's allowed crews to press a lot easier. >> concern now verse as month or so ago and we received that first rain. perhaps the intensity of this storm is a little more significant. >> now, of course, erosion is the major concern. but, folks are welcoming the rain. they just hope it doesn't cause more damage to this area. we're live in san rosa. >> such a tough run. thank you very much, pete. it is 6:35 right now. in the south bay, there's concern about the homeless during this storm. santa clara county leaders set up for beds in seven different shelters. san jose handed out blankets,

sleeping bags and socks and umbrellas to about 300 people. members of the global organization for community services spear headed the event. it was a long line of people who need help at st. james park in downtown san jose. microclimate weather coverage will continue throughout the day here on "today in the bay." when you're not close to your tv, you can actually access our live radar by clicking on our weather tab there at nbcbayarea.com. 6:36 and the man acquitted in the killing of kate steinle will be back in court to face new charges. he will answer federal weapons charges. garcia was acquitted of murder and manslaughter charges but convicted of possessing a weapon in criminal court. last week sentenced to a maximum of three years or time served. fremont police are asking for help involving a shooting during a botched truck break in

that seriously injured two people. this happened early yesterday in a quiet part of fremont. police say four people were trying to break into a truck parked outside of a home. now, the two people that live there actually tried to stop the robbers. at least one of those robbers opened fire. other residents saw those thieves run from the scene leaving their own vehicle behind. a white pickup truck. neighbors there terrified. >> 1:30 or 2:00. >> now the two men who were shot suffered injuries that are not life threatening. police are searching for two men, two women and are looking at surveillance video. they believe could provide helpful clues. happening today, we're going talearn some new steps to stop a problem that plagued san francisco. all those car break ins you hear about. city police chief with supervisors say they will unveil a new initiative.

overnight we looked into some of the latest figures of how big a problem this is in the city. police released numbers in december. san francisco had over 28,000 autobreak ins per year. that averages to about 85 per day. the numbers reported in the chronicle show that break ins in the mission are up 86% from last year. and back to our microclimate weather alert this morning. taking a live look outside over downtown san jose this morning there. wet on the ground, but, still, hazy right there as we are getting soaked this morning. >> meteorologist kari hall is tracking it all for us. you say this will stick for a while. >> yes, it will. it will bring in much-needed rain and giving us a good soaking around the bay area and time that the rain picks up and we will have heavy downpours. we also will have those winds picking up today. all of these areas shaded in yellow are where we will have wind advisories in effect that begin at noon and continue through tomorrow morning. and some of our higher elevations in the santa cruz

mountains and also for the inland hills. we could have gusts up to 40 to 50 miles per hour. and even in the valleys up to 20 to 30 miles per hour. so, that's going to bring the potential of some down trees and bring down some of those power lines, as well. we will have those winds continuing through the day. as we look at the wind forecast, up from the south and it is going to begin to get very windy as we go into this evening. look at half moon bay. sustained winds at 40 miles per hour and morgan hill, san jose and in and around the 20 to 25-mile-per-hour range. finally tomorrow the wind starts to back off and still be rainy. a steady rain continues across the bay area. i'll talk more about that coming up. mike, you're still tracking that big rig crash, that big crash and the backup on 24. >> a number of vehicles involved there. westbound 24 and that's the big back up we see coming out of walnut creek. eight miles of backup. the better news over here the crash cleared to the shoulder and that's one of the issues

that happened in the backup and the wet roads, be careful heading over towards college avenue and we still have three out of four lanes blocked. the tow truck is on the scene. we need a few over there. the east shore freeway slow and highway 4 to the backup over at the bay bridge. the metering lights are on. very wet conditions all around the bay. look at all the green highlighting. that's what our road weather index on kari's data, as well. pleasanton and 808 and in the south bay we have a slower drive heading north towards fremont. as you get over towards that san mateo bridge a big build up over the last few minutes and we're watching to see if it sorts itself out. things are moving a little bit better now and the tri-valley shakes out like this. the worst drive for 84, of course, through pleasanton and livermore. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. 6:40 right now. coming up on "today in the bay" a major bay area bridge. the plan to reduce congestion

much covered all over the bay area with pockets of heavy rain just south of milpitas that will be moving up 880 within the next few minutes. as we gate live look outside, it is pouring out there and in evergreen it will continue to pour throughout the day. our temperatures reaching into the upper 50s. we will talk about what is ahead as this rain continues for at least tomorrow into late tomorrow night. more on that in about five minutes. and, kari, we were trying to ease back into the commute. west 24 really, really tough drive right now. all the way out of walnut creek. wet roadways and crash blocking three out of your four lanes right here. >> thanks, mike. new details and good news for a family in the south bay. the two boys are safe and sound after intense suearch in san joe yesterday. photo of that search that a viewer sent us. it is going on in the park area.

we told you about that search in last night's newscast. the boys are with a family member and back home now. let's take a live look at the san rafael bridge. the drivers take the brown line get some relief from the commute sooner than that they. a third lane could open as soon as next month. the lane has been scheduled to open in april, but transportation officials say the timeline will move up if testing is successful. the lane would go eastbound from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. every day. the speed limit on the bridge will drop for everyone. 50 miles per hour to play it safe out there. new this morning, we now know what caused an early morning fire. posted these video clips on the twitter and that fire broke out near midnight. that's the shopping mall just

north of cal expo. fire investigators say that that fire was sparked after someone left the mercedes suv on a charger overnight. the charger overheated and sparked the fire. three cars were damaged. happening today, president speaks to farmers and captures some football. president trump spent the weekend at camp david. today he is set to address the farm bureau investigation in nashville along with sonny purdue and head to the college playoff football championship gaming good dwg bue ing googeor crimson tide. well, the president will bring a friend along as he travels from tennessee. >> bob corker who has been suddenly supportive of the president. >> he has. it's been very strange to watch. corker is the guy who said trump is unstable and didn't have the ability he needed to be president and now traveling with

the president to his home state of tennessee. here's corker last august. >> the president has not yet, has not yet been able to demonstrate the stability nor some of the confidence that he needs to demonstrate in order to be successful. >> there's a whole group of republicans who have criticized the president, not just on his politics, but on his qualifications to be president who are now lining up behind him. corker said the white house was an adult day care. he was putting us on the path, he said trump was, to world war three. now accompanying him on air force one. lindsey graham called trump a bigot but now golfs with him. the president met with those republicans at camp david, as laura pointed out over the weekend. the president wants to spend a trillion on infrastructure and roads and airports and what thought. the big priority is funding the government. the government runs out of money and shuts down 11 days from now.

over eight inches of rain to catch up to normpal. so, here we go with the rain and we cannot complain about this. pretty good coverage here even down to southern california if you're traveling today. you'll see some of the showers even down to san diego. we are seeing, also, the pockets of the heavy rain moving into the bay area this morning. how can you tell what's heavy? it's bright yellow on the radar and even red there as we get a look at what's happening in marin county and zoom in to santa clara county where it's pretty much steady all around and even down into the south county we are seeing a lot of green here on the radar and on the map. you can also track this at home on the nbc bay area app. you can zoom in to where you live on the radar and you can see where exactly how heavy that rain is coming down. and that is when this is just clearing on the radar. showing that around mill valley the rainfall rate coming down almost 0.02 per hour where we've already measured about three quarters of an inch of rain in parts of the bay area, but most

of us about a quarter of an inch of rain. even in the north bay, some of these burn scar areas will have to closely monitor as we go through the day where the potential of runoffs and flooding there and debris flows and then we move down towards u vallejo and richmond picking up and then we go down 880 down towards fremont where heavier rain is about to move in. heads up if you're about to move out the door. getting dressed this morning. staying in front of the closet and make sure you have all the rain gear from the rain jackets and umbrella. make sure you have on nice, warm pants like jeans and then some boots and keep those feet dry. a day when you have to step over a lot of puddles out there on the sidewalk. the rain will continue and even get heavier as we go through the rest of the day. really picking up by late morning to early afternoon, but pretty much a steady rain for the next 24 to possibly next 36 hours. but once this moves out by

tomorrow night, clearing and that is what we'll see for the rest of the week. no more rain after tuesday night. we have a potential of getting anywhere from an inch and a half to possibly three inches of rain in the santa cruz mountains and our temperatures holding steady in the upper 50s to lower 60s over the next few days. inland looks nice. we head over to mike. the big problem is still highway 24. >> that's right. i hope this changes. one thing that has changed. the chp report and just get the report that all lanes have been cleared after the earlier crash that was blocking all three of four lanes, i should say. all the way back from walnut creek. that will be a big issue for much of this morning's commute. as more rain continues through the area, be careful. the slick conditions. you know about the slowing here now and you won't be surprised. you don't have to slam on the brakes. more rain coming across from the peninsula and north bay, as well. the blue. that's where there's puddling and ponding and standing water oand green and east bay and

back and so is the rain. we are in a microclimate weather alert as we track the first significant storm to hit the bay area so far this season. the rain, however, is creating dangerous and slick conditions on the roads and freeways. so, if you are headed out the door, look what you're in store for. give yourself plenty of time and space, of course, between all the other cars. taking a live look from santa rosa this morning for the past couple of months, crews have been preparing for rain in the bay area in the wake of the north bay wildfires. the big concern is that toxic ash could flow into rivers and streams. crews place the straw along the roads to try to prevent some of the runoff. erosion also major concern as the rain hits that area. several pay area counties will be giving out sand bags as the storm rolls through we made it easy for you to find those filling stations. our website, nbcbayarea.com. look at the locations. we're following breaking news new video showing smoke that was billowing from the

authorities say one of the suspects was killed, though it is not clear how. the gunman is still on the loose. blasting off into the new year, spacex had the first launch of 2018 last night sending a secretive pay load into orbit. it launched from florida leaving a trail as it soar under to space. carrying the spacecraft for the u.s. government. the boosters separated and second stage continued on. touched down at spacex landing zone at cape canaveral. pretty cool to see. back to our microclimate weather alert. taking a live look at the bay bridge this morning that you can see, barely see the rain and slick conditions and you can also see that, yeah, people are heading back to work. we haven't seen that in almost two weeks. >> hope your windshield wipers are working this morning. >> you need that. all the rain gear, too.
