salvadorans from deportation. a move several of the democratic lawmakers attending today's white house meeting quickly derided on twitter shortly after it was announced for more on this we go to nbc's tracie potts in washington. tracie, good morning. is there a possibility both sides can come together today? >> reporter: we'll find out. democrats will focus on daca protections for immigrants brought to this country illegally when they were children and the timing here is critical because democrats' votes are needed to pass a budget in two weeks, two weeks from today. expect the president to talk about the wall. he wants to build that wall, and now we know based on the spending plan he submitted a week ago, he wants to spend $18 billion over the next decade to build a wall that will cover 900 miles. and according to "the new york times," is willing to sacrifice other types of border security. surveillance, radar technology, patrol boats, customs agents in

order to help pay for that wall. now, democrats, like nancy pelosi, already saying that the wall is a symbol of hate. and, again, the timing is critical here. the number two democrat in the senate dick durbin says they are willing to sacrifice a government shutdown as a result of not being able to come to some agreement on immigration. we'll see if they can come to any sort of agreement at that meeting today. phillip? >> we'll be watching. tracie, thank you. >> the months' long russia investigation could be in its final stages with special counsel robert mueller on the cusp of interviewing the man who may serve as his principal witness, president trump himself. sources exclusively tell nbc news that lawyers for the president have been talking to fbi investigators about a possible interview by the special counsel. the washington post adds that talks of an interview have triggered a discussion among the president's attorneys about how to avoid a sit-down encounter or set limits on such a session. the interview, while not yet

set, could come in a matter of weeks according to a source. but this morning the question is what will that interview look like? and will it be mueller himself questioning the president? nbc's kristen kewelker has more from the white house. >> reporter: nbc news has learned president trump could meet face to face with special counsel robert mueller within a matter of weeks as a part of the ongoing russia probe. the president's legal team and federal investigators met in december to discuss a range of options, according to three sources familiar with the matter, those options include whether the president would be interviewed directly by the special counselor his investigators, or provide written responses, the location, duration, and topics. legal experts say it's unlikely investigators would agree to anything other than an in-person interview. >> prosecutors want a live body in front of them for lots of reasons, including they want to be able to assess tone and inflection. they want to ask follow-up questions. they want to be able to prone. >> reporter: when asked over the weekend if he's still commit

through an apartment complex north of boston. neighbors say the fire started as black smoke and quickly grew to 4 alarms with flames erupting from the roof. high winds made it difficult for firefighters to battle the blaze. fire officials say all 28 residents were able to get out of the building. one woman was hurt and taken to the hospital. the red cross said it has a team on scene. >> icy road conditions led to a fiery crash in pittsburgh early monday. this car right here burst into flames on a highway sending massive plumes of smoke into the sky. officials say the blaze erupted after the driver slid on ice and crashed into a barrier. firefighters were able to extinguish the flames. one person was transported to a hospital by ambulance. that victim's condition is unknown. >> all right. let's get a check of some of the warm up that a lot of us are getting but also a storm in southern california that they're worried about. bill, good morning. >> it was only a month ago talking about all those fires. they have been extremely dry through the wet season which begins october 1st. los angeles almost 5 inches below normal. so, i mean, pretty incredible
