6:00 am
room. several lanes of 880 closed right now. "today in the bay" continues. a very good, very busy out on the roadways tuesday morning. thanks for joining us, i'm laura garcia. >> i'm scott mcgrew. marcus washington has the day off. let's get straight to the breaking traffic news. good morning. >> good morning to you. not a good morning for the folks involved in the crash. i'm going to show you the video again. this is southbound 880 at 237. we talked about a fire involved in the crash. multivehicles, at least five. we are going to get more detail from kris sanchez, who is on scene. i want to show you, after we show you the video, the map to get you around it heading toward san jose. we are showing you where the traffic is jammed up. the realtime sensors are jamming up. southbound 880, all the way to 237. that's where one lane is open. mission boulevard or if you are
6:01 am
past that and in the back up, dixon line road, get over to 680. that is moving in the southbound direction. the commute moves toward 880. stick to southbound 680. west 237, that's already starting to jam up because we don't typically see that here. a lot of folks here. milpitas, this will be flooding this area. that will be a problem for folks heading toward sunniville. that's the only issue for the morning. this is going to continue for a while. kris, what have you learned out there? >> reporter: hi, there. you have the hits and runs on the crash. it is a horrific scene. we have officer janine reynolds here. the conditions may have contributed to how folks reacted to the wrong way driver.
6:02 am
>> when there's a wet roadway, it picks up mist. that could be a contributing factor. driving the wrong way on the freeway is always a danger and that's the major contributing factor to this collision. >> reporter: folks give themselves more time to react in this situation and other situations. >> we recommend in the wet weather, slow down, allow more space between you and the other vehicle so you can allow a better reaction time. >> reporter: thank you very much, officer reynolds. the cars are starting to be removed from the scene. there are four cars involved as well as the wrong way driver. the wrong way driver is being treated at the trauma unit. sounds like there are very serious injuries. one of the other drivers of the four vehicles was transported mainly as a precaution. again, this was a transition time during the morning commute.
6:03 am
there was a heavier volume, a higher speed on 880 south just around 237. officer reynolds says there's not a lot you can do if there's a wrong way driver coming in your direction. in other regards, if you slow down and give yourself time to react and space, then you have someplace to go. it is rather shocking this wasn't a more serious crash given the fact a lot of folks are hitting the roads. mike inouye is tracking the detours around the area. we can tell you, it expands quite some way. if you can work around this area, with mike's help and with waze, you will maybe make it to where you are going on time this morning. this is going to be a very long investigation because of the severity of the injuries. it could, potentially, become a deadly accident investigation and they take a longer time. coming back here live, you can see that the vehicles are still
6:04 am
here behind me. we have seen flat beds rolling up to try to clear the scene. if this is part of your commute, you are going to be late. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> terrible accident. thank you. >> that was southbound 880 near 237 this morning. a big problem with wet roadways as well. you say the rain is going to move out? >> it is going to eventually move out. we will have more rain moving in as we go into the next couple of hours. it may not be that long before we see those showers returning. as you get a closer look, you can see for the south bay right now, light rain. all of the downpours that are just to the south of us will be moving in. as we go through the rest of the day, still some rain possible. it will be off and on. we are not done with the weather system yet because we are seeing a lull in the activity. we will talk about that and what's ahead in a few minutes.
6:05 am
we have team coverage of the rainy weather this morning. >> let's go to pete suratos in san francisco, live. still reports of flooding, the morning after the city shattered a rainfall record. pete? >> reporter: yeah, that's right, scott. at least, at this point, it doesn't appear to be a flooding concern. we are not seeing much rain in san francisco, but as you mentioned, there was a record that was broken. when it comes to daily rainfall in san francisco, since 2014, the previous hie was 2.36 inches. yesterday, we saw rain reach 3.15, so, almost an inch increase from the record. right now, 17th and fulton street, it's prone to a lot of flooding. in the past few years, they set up flood barriers to protect homes and businesses. roughly at 4:00 a.m. driving on the 101 south onramp, there was
6:06 am
flooding on the freeway at the 101 south 80 split. you saw crews working on that area. you tend to see a lot of flooding there and on cesar chavez street. back out here live, the barriers are set up at 17th and fulton, an area with a history of flooding. the city is offering funding to retro fit this area, their homes or businesses to prepare for the flooding. a strike team is on call if there are flooding issues in that area. not much rain taking place, so far, so good. live in san francisco, pete suratos, "today in the bay." >> let's hope it stays that way, thanks a lot, pete. in the meantime, north bay residents are holding their breath as rain pounds the area after october's wildfire. they are concerned of mudslides and erosion.
6:07 am
we spoke to a man whose home was narrowly avoided by flames and now there's no vegetation. >> i was out and hit a puddle of water that's never been there in ten years. we have been through a lot of rain. it was a shocker. >> green absorbent material has been sprayed to keep the dirt in place. meanwhile, in southern california, the area ravaged by last month's fire, this is video of mudslides near highway 101. we are getting word the freeway is closed in both directions. we have heard of vehicles trapped in the mud from our sister station in l.a. there are spots knee deep in mud. >> reporter: again, we just got here. excuse me for trying to catch my
6:08 am
breath here. it is a situation we were warned about. we talked about the possibility of mud and debris. according to chp officers we spoke with, this is all coming from the santa barbara area. >> there are some reports of a slide triggering a gas main eruption that sparked a house fire. some areas got an inch of rain every 30 minutes. new this morning, back here at home, images of an rv fire in san francisco. a viewer sent this picture in the glen park area by monterey boulevard. fire crews evacuated a half block worth of homes. it took 20 minutes to put out the flames. everybody has been allowed back into their homes. they said the rv had a major breakdown. a san jose man accused of robbing and sexually assaulting

6:10 am
still may bring in light showers for the south bay and the east bay. in time for the evening commute, all of this rain will have cleared and we'll have a chance of showers early tomorrow, moving in very quickly, but should not cause any problems. we'll talk more about that and what's ahead. mike has another update on the breaking news. >> let's get you out with sky ranger. overhead, look at the cars jammed up. this is southbound 880 approaching flashing lights blo blocking all but the slow lanes. kris sanchez told us about that scene. the wrong-way driver was the problem. this is the issue here. all the emergency vehicles and they need a number of folks to clear from the area, along with the person who had major injuries taken from the scene to the hospital. we are looking at 7:30 when the lanes are open. this will be a fluid situation as the conditions evolve. we'll see whether or not there are spill that is need to be
