the storm hit in the early morning hours. some had no time to run. >> i got it. >> reporter: this is what a desperate rescue looks like. trapped inside this mangled mess of a home, a 14-year-old fighting for her life, but rises in the rain. >> coming out. >> reporter: using the jaws of life, search teams in montecito finally reached lauren canton the teenager buried alive for sex hours. her rescue is a miracle. >> she had so much debris on top of her and everything we moved could move other objects that could be held back that could be entering the space she has. >> reporter: search crews in santa barbara could not confirm what happened to lauren's family some many were swep away so quickly. >> we got a mudslide right now.

>> reporter: mud, pouring downhills, like a river so powerful homes were pushed ryoto off tear foundation as others were buried to their rooftops. entire families were washed away. while checking on neighbors the johnsons heard a cry. >> we dug down and saw a little baby, i don't know where it came from. we got it out, got the mud out of its mouth. i hope it's okay. >> reporter: daring rescues playing out all day in the mountains of mud, downtown movent si to jumontecito last m under threat of fire is now under water. oprah posting, hocks rescuing my neighbors. instagram videos of her mud-soaked back yard. the coast guard plucking more than 50 from rising waters.

even first responders needed rescued. today, 14-year-old lauren canton is lucky to be alive. this morning, the race is on no save more victims just like her. but there is fear time may be running out. those devastating wildfires here back in december only made the flooding worse. so much of that vegetation that soaks up water was burned to the ground. i want to show you incredible pictures from the air. this is what montecito looked like before this last flooding. in a matter of hours this landscape was completely re-arranged the death toll now stands at 15. >> that number is expected to rise, search teams will be out here in just a short time. savannah. >> it happened so fast, miguel, thank you very much. another major story this morning, a federal judge has stepped in to temporarily block the trump administration's plan to end a controversial immigration program. that decision announced just hours after the president, himself, sparked confusion about where he stand on the issue

calling it an epidemic just yet, it's already shaping up to be the worst flu season since 2015. this morning a deadly string of the flu is sweeping the country. hospitals seeing a surge of sick patients. >> it's getting worse. >> reporter: the cdc says 46 states are now reporting widespread flu and more than 41,000 flu cases are being reported, nearly three times more than this time last season. california has been hit especially hard, at least 27 deaths there. people under 65 since the flu season began in okay. this hospital near san diego opening a triage tent to care for the flood of patients. emergency services stretched thin from omaha -- >> about 1200 positive for flu tests. about 4100 of which came in last week. >> reporter: to dallas. >> we are now seeing 12-to-15 cases per day of people calling 911 with flu-related conditions.

we are looking at heavier accumulations in the mountains, that blowing and drifting snow could be a problem. the bigger problem will be through late thursday. ice is forming across illinois and later into indiana, st. louis, champagne, indianapolising looking at anywhere from a tenth of an inch to a half an inch of ice. saturday it makes its way through ohio, into western pennsylvania and by saturday night, it could be threw upstate new york into northern new england with a half an inch to a quarter of an inch of ice causing power outages, airport delays and trees down. we will be watching this very, very closely. we will get to your local forecast coming up in the next 30 seconds.

championships. she felt she was underscored and criticized the judges. ashley is here for an exclusive live interview. first, here's her story. one of the biggest names in figure skating, ashley wagner, now faces heartbreak. the bronze medalist in sochi had set her sights on a second trip to the olympics. but after finishing fourth at the u.s. nationals -- >> she does not look happy with that. >> reporter: -- the visibly disappointed 26-year-old will not be headed to pyeongchang. and she did not hold back. >> i am furious and i think deservedly so. >> a final jump right here, the triple lutz. >> reporter: wagner blasted the judges after receiving lower than expected scores during the free skate. >> i want to be on that olympic team. and i'm really mad that i'm in this position again. >> reporter: four years ago, wagner was also at the center of

scores caused this reaction to go viral. and ashley is with us exclusively. good morning. >> good morning, you guys. >> we know how you were feeling after the judges scored you. we got to see that in the piece. it's been a week or so. you had some time to rest. how are you feeling as you sit with us. >> i'm feeling okay. i am feeling proud of that moment. i've had a week to kind of process everything. it was one of those things where you're thrown into the mix. immediately after, for me, immediately after i found out my olympic dreams had come to an end and i think i was just heartbroken. devastated. i had worked 22 years for that moment and i had put out something that i felt so proud of. >> you could actually see it. when you ended your program, you had a look on your face like, yes. i know i nailed it. i know that i'm going. tell us what it fell like when

you saw those scores come up. >> seeing the scores was difficult because i know where my second mark consistently falls. and it didn't this week. that was confusing to me in that moment when i'm feeling the end of this olympic dream, it was heartbreaking. >> do i hear a tone of regret a little bit? are you sorry the way you spoke out the way you did? >> no. what you see is what you get with me. i pride myself on being honest and open. at the end of the day, based on the selection criteria, they made the right call with these team. those ladies are getting ready to go to the olympics and i support them entirely. >> do you think the judges unfairly singled you out in some way or judged you harder than the others? >> the only thing i question is my scores compared to my scores in the past. i scored lower on the second mark in my short program than i did at a competition that i was injured at.

those are the things that i'm confused about. but you know, the technical side, i think was totally fair. i ended up where i ended up. that moment i created for myself, a standing ovation at nationals, that's something, for me, i'll forever be proud of. >> you've been criticized after you spoke about the judges. and some people were saying she was a poor sport she should have been more gracious. i know you stand by what you said. if you have a chance to unring the bell, maybe i would change my tone, some of the words, would you have change ed any of it? not one thing. >> i don't think so. i have a lot of experience in this sport. i know what i skate like and where i usually fall. i'm allowed to question things. but question things only in relation to myself. these girls earned their spots. i am so excited to be able to kind of take a step back and cheer on team usa. i'm so passionate about this sport. i've been in the position where

mudslide threat. what happens with a torrential rain, it instantly runs off downhill. the soil becomes liquid. and the floodwaters contain significant mud and debris. those mud flows can travel at 65 miles per hour. you can't outrun it. a developing storm through the plains. a foggy start in a big section of the midsection of the country, all the way down into new orleans and into the mid mississippi and ohio river valleys. sunshine along the eastern seaboard, with good morning, i'm meteorologist, kari hall. it's a cloudy start with light rain across the far north bay as we look at the high temperatures today. we'll be up to 57 degrees in santa rosa, 59 in oakland, as well as san francisco and low 60s for the peninsula and the south bay. that round of rain will not get

welcome back to "today." it's cold and folks are bundled up out there. thank you for being with us. let's get right to your news at 8:00. it's a busy wednesday morning. despite heroic rescue efforts, the death toll is rising from flash flooding and mudslides in california. let's get to correspondent miguel almaguer. he's in montecito where the search for survivors is growing more desperate at this hour. miguel, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. that deadly storm has passed, but the damage is just being realized. this is what it looks like block after block across montecito. this is the hardest-hit area. we don't know the number of homes that have been destroyed, but we know this goes on block after block. the death toll now stands at 15, we expect that number to rise. there's not a concrete number for those missing, but it is believed to be roughly around 20. i want to show you some incredible video captured by nbc news yesterday. the rescue of a 14-year-old girl who was trapped inside her home

alone for more than six hours. when first responders passed that home, they said they could hear a cry for help. and then they were able to successfully dig her out. the destruction here does span across santa barbara county. more than 30 miles of the 101 was also shut down for some time. again, the death toll here is at 15. that number will climb. savannah? >> miguel, thank you very much. president trump suffered a setback on immigration overnight, just hours after a high-profile meeting to focus on that very issue. nbc's chief white house correspondent hallie jackson has more on that along with the latest steve bannon bombshell. good morning. >> reporter: hoda, yeah. a couple of headlines coming out of washington, here. this new court move will have some dreamers breathing a sigh of relief, at least for now, in

breitbart bombshell has steve bannon out, stepping down from the company. but he may not be gone for good from the political sphere. a source close to him tells nbc news, politics or news, bannon had to choose, implying the former white house chief strategist may be on the hunt for a bigger piece of the political pie. overnight, anthony scaramucci added more fuel to the fire, saying bannon was not a team player. >> i think he was a bad hire. not because he wasn't talented. not because he wasn't smart and strategic, he just didn't want to play inside the sand box with the other people. >> reporter: bannon's sudden departure from breitbart where he spent five years as executive chairman caps a roller coaster week as it saw him telling all in a new tell-all book, then walking back the explosive comments about the president's son and son-in-law. he expressed regret but for some key donors and for the president, too little, too late.

decade. many are russians paying big money to come here. and you'll be surprised, as we were, at where many of them stay. florida is known for many things. sunshine, beaches, and now, as a place where hundreds of russians come every year to have their babies. that's right. russian women who give birth to american babies. it's controversial, for sure, but totally legal. any baby born in the u.s. is automatically an american citizen. it's in the constitution. it's become a status symbol in russia to have a miami-born baby, who comes complete with a precious u.s. passport. mothers post pictures of their u.s. citizens. over the past four months we've met dozens of russian women who have done it. >> it was not only me. there were four or five women flying here.

it's better to keep them in jars like this. once you open a bag of sugar, it goes all over. put it inside a marked and labeled container. you can print labels on your computer. this is a little ptouch. >> what is this? >> a labelmaker. >> and great for spices. >> for spices, you should put the date on the bottom. you'll be surprised. you look at a spice. i bought it in 2010. >> can i tell you, i have stuff in my house from then. >> put a little label. this is january whatever. i like to just pick things. i don't like to look in drawers. i don't want to look in drawers for my wooden spoons. i have a crock for wooden spoons and ladles.
