6:00 am
you, thanks so much for joining us, i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. this morning as we get on our way we walk outside to warmer temperatures this morning. >> it's warmer, but some people can't even really see that far outside of the door and the window because we have had some dense fog rolling across parts of the bay area and as we step out here is a look at some of that visibility down to a quarter of a mile or less around napa and for half-moon bay we've seen at times the visibility there at about a quarter of a mile. so this fog is kind of drifting for those inland valleys as well. let me get you out the door with a look at your morning commute in the east bay, it will be in the low 50s, mostly cloudy but there will be more sunshine by this afternoon and that's going to make it feel so much better even though our temperatures stay in the 50s. we will take a look ahead to the rest of the forecast including the weekend coming up, but mike has a number of updates for us. the first of one we will show you over here, over in the tri-valley south 680 at sunol boulevard that crash all vehicles made their way to the shoulder so no lanes blocked but
6:01 am
a distraction so the slowing will stick around south toward possibly 84. the south bay and peninsula look great as far as the speeds go. this crash north 880 at seventh, motorcycle involved, sound like a motorcycle hit a pick yum truck and when that's the case oftentimes we see the driver okay. no slowing so i'm thinking they are out of lanes but chp has yet to arrive. the slowing we do is at the bay bridge toll plaza. the metering lights are on there and low clouds hover around but so far you can see just fine as you drive across the deck and down the east shore freeway. where we saw that slowing coming down towards hercules the fog register is here. so the fog creeping through the area, probably had these fox tapping the breaks coming across the carquinez bridge. developing news out of southern california this morning, the search is intensifying for survivors in the deadly montecito mudslides. >> this comes as new video is surfacing into our newsroom
6:02 am
showing the moment the devastating mudslides swept through the coastal community. >> oh, my god, mom. >> you can hear the panic in his is volunteer. this is video that was posted online showing a home being inundated with mud at the height of tuesday morning's deadly slide. that mud rose to homeowner's waist level within minutes, other homes were washed away completely. >> the latest at this hour, 17 people confirmed dead, 17 others are still missing, 28 people are injured. highway 101 is still closed and isn't expected to reopen until monday at the earliest. 100 homes are listed as destroyed but the number could change. among the missing are several retirees and young children. relatives spoke with crews at the scene yesterday. >> i don't know how far she could have been swept. i don't know. i don't know where she is.
6:03 am
>> you hear his pain. the man is looking for his mother. sadly, her body was found later yesterday. >> in the meantime a 14-year-old girl whose rescue was seen across the world on tuesday, we showed it to you on "today in the bay," she's still in the hospital this morning. her brother and father are still unaccounted for. new this morning, more bay area search and rescue teams are now in southern california assisting in the search for mud slide victims. marin counties's you are pan search and rescue team tweeted this photo before leaving last night for montecito. the 30-member team expects to start searching this morning. earlier yesterday members of the 129th rescue wing sent out photos of their rescue efforts in montecito. that team is based in moffett field. stay with us for continuing coverage on these deadly mudslides. nbc bay area's anousha rasta is in is santa barbara county tracking the latest from the flood zone. you can follow us on twitter,

that's @nbcbayarea. at 6:03 this morning happening today we're expecting big developments in the recall effort against santa clara county judge aaron persky. judge persky came under execute knee after sentencing brock turner to six months in jail for sexual assault. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us live in san jose to explain what will happen today. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. we expect those signatures to arrive here at the santa clara county registrar of voters around 9:00 and once they are turned in they have to be verified and it sounds like there are quite a few of them that will have to be verified. now, the petitioners are required to have 58,000 signatures and nbc bay area sources tell us they gathered almost double that. if enough of those signatures are qualified then the ballot measure to recall judge aaron persky would go before voters in june. supporters want persky off the bench for what they consider a lenient sentence for former stanford swimmer brock turner who was convicted of sexual
6:05 am
assaulting an unconscious woman behind a campus dumpster at stanford in 2015. persky sentenced turner to six months in jail when prosecutors were asking for six years. opponents to this recall effort, though, say that judges have to have some amount of prosecutorial discretion. without referencing the turner case the judge submitted a 198-word statement to the registrar that reads in part, as a prosecutor i fought vigorously for victims. as a judge my role is to consider both sides. california law requires every judge to consider rehabilitation and probation for first-time offenders. it is not always popular, but it is the law and i took an oath to follow it without regard to public opinion or my opinions as a former prosecutor. we will be here when members of that recall effort roll up to turn in those signatures. and on twitter if you follow me there i will tell you what brock turner's lawyers are doing to

have his convictions tossed out. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." 6:05. happening today, a possible next step in an effort to expand express lanes on highway 101. we've been covering this story for months. today san mateo transportation leaders will discuss an environmental impact report. that project would build one new express lane in each direction between redwood city and san bruno. happening today, it is the end of an era in one pacifica neighborhood. the final home teetering on a dangerous cliff sighed is set to be demolished in just about two hours. "today in the bay's" pete suratos is live outside that home on esplanade avenue and why that home has to come down and new concerns as well surfacing along the california coastline. we have covered this area for years now on "today in the bay," pete. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, laura. yes, a very familiar location, as you mentioned, covering this area whenever we have those heavy rains or those king tides
6:07 am
in the area here in pacifica, but as you mentioned this home behind me to my left is one of the last homes on the 500 block of esplanade avenue, it will be coming down in a matter of hours. in fact, our crews were here a couple years ago when that homeowner tried to save the home, we have that video for you, they tried to slide it about 15 feet away. obviously that plan did not pan out and the owners finally selling the property to pacifica last year. now, this cliff where this house was located started eroding back in 1998, that was during the el nino storms and caused more than a dozen homes on this block to fall on the beach or eventually get bulldozed to prevent it from happening. back to this new report, there is a new report citing cities most vulnerable to coastal erosion, you see on the map three locations specifically, you have daly city, martins beach and point reyes, all of
6:08 am
those in the bay area, most vulnerable to coastal erosion seeing similar issues to what we've seen in the past to pacifica. those cliff sides wouldn't be the best location for building homes. the last one remaining on the west side of esplanade avenue is set to be demolished at 8:00 a.m. live in pacifica, pete suratos for "today in the bay." with us being right in the middle of our rainy season of course that's going to be a great concern along the coastline, that erosion. as we get ready to head out the door we do have patchy dense fog in spots and temperatures that are a little warmer thanks to that blanket of fog and the clouds. with err at 54 degrees in san jose but as we go to the tri-valley you're getting up and about to get the kids ready for school, it's going to be another cool and cloudy morning, also watching out for that fog as you drive to school this morning. it's going to be in the low 50s, but by the time you go pick them up from school it will be 57 degrees and some sunshine, a really nice day all of our high temperatures will be a little bit milder hanks to that sunshine and we will talk about
6:09 am
the weekend and what's coming down the pike as far as more storms, that's in just a few minutes. mike is saying the fog may slow you down. >> i think we've seen it affecting our speed sensors. look, this orange blob has been here all morning, that's the technical term, blob. this is napa solano counties. that is an issue for folks driving through the area, all morning low visibility, down through vallejo and we've seen the slowing kick in as the fog registers coming down for the upper east shore freeway across that carquinez bridge and across the benicia bridge. we're watching the walnut creek interchange, a little slowly expected because of the build. the crash north 880 at 7th still no update on lane status, but chp has not given us any idea. slowing for sunol down 680 through the area because of an earlier crash, it's over on the shoulder. travel times, no delays for transit but you might have wifi
6:10 am
issues as they improve the system there may be a delay as they're fixing it. coming up next on "today in the bay," hot housing market, the reason home prices in the south bay are expected to spike even more this year despite the growing housing crisis in the bay area. a new way to fly through your commute.
6:13 am
good thursday morning. we've seen some fog around the bay area, but as of now the visibility is all clear in san jose, let's take a- live look d go to southeast san jose to evergreen. here is our temperatures for the day, it will be 51 degrees between 8:00 and 9:00 and then that sunspwñb helps to warm things up, it's going to be a little bit warmer than where we should be for this time of year 60s. we will talk about what's ahead as we coast into the weekend, that's coming up in about five minutes. and a live look here at the san mateo bridge, live brake lights coming on westbound, that's not great. no incidents reported but a lot more traffic on the flat section and low clouds drifting through, although visibility is all right. we will talk about where there's more slowing coming up. 6:13 right now, this is a fun story to tell you about, a few talented young people are about to have their work seen by more eyes than they could have ever imagined and that's not to
6:14 am
mention on air as you're seeing right now, you see their work. it has been chosen to be displayed on 100 san francisco muni buses starting today. this is going to run through april this year. poetry will also be displayed. happening later today muni kicks off that celebration with a news conference at city hall. this is an interesting idea, dell is getting into the jewelry business. the company has teamed up with nicki reed to offer a line of 14 and 18 karat gold rings, earrings and cuff rings made from metal recycled from computer mother boards. epa estimates 12% of e waste is recycled resulting in $60 million of gold and silver being thrown away every year. the dell jewelry is up for pre order online ranging from $78 to $348. new this morning, no relief in site for bay area housing crisis. a new report says san jose will be the hottest housing market in the entire country in 2018. we looked through the new
6:15 am
numbers from zillow overnight. home values were set to spike dramatically, up near 99% -- that's 9% of the value of the average home in san jose is é> the reason of course the tech industries continues to boom. >> especially in san jose, scott. >> you have google planning that mega campus downtown here the train station, now we have word that adobe is going to build a fourth tower in downtown san jose as well. j says they bought a plot of land between highway 87 next to its current tower complex so they can add another 3,000 workers. that's 3,000 more people that need homes in san jose. one reality check, the last time adobe built a tower when they
6:16 am
went from two towers to three, we were in the middle of the recession and just days before the big ribbon cutting adobe laid off a lot of workers, canceled the ribbon cutting as inappropriate. walmart said this morning it will increase the minimum wage to $11 and increase parental leave benefits thanks to the tax cuts. hundreds of thousands of people could be affected. workers with 20 years at the will get a $1,000 bonus. don't adjust your sets, this is what it looked like at the consumer electronics show in las vegas when it was not electronics. the electricity went out at the huge las vegas convention center for a while. officials blame the heavy rains. shortly before the power went out our scott budman filed this report. >> reporter: good morning. we figured we would wrap up our reports with something you deal with in the morning every day, a horrible commute, right? well, imagine instead of cars going through the bay area
6:17 am
freeways, how about drones like this one rising above bay area freeways. this company velocopter will make drones like this one probably three to five years out, completely electric, completely autonomous with a range of about 17 miles an hour. now, tonight at 6:00 we will give you a first look at how the whole thing works and imagine a commute where you just rise above it all. that's the latest from here in las vegas. i will send it back to you. >> i will point out that high tech has been promising flying cars since, what, since the 1920s. maybe, you know, who knows, maybe some day. >> we will see. we're close with autonomous cars. well, little animal story here for you, a group of teachers actually heard a sound coming from a drainpipe near their school, they were able to save some kittens and it was all caught on camera. take a look. right? the teachers in lake placid,
6:18 am
florida, called animal services when they heard what sounded like kittens. animal service officer lowered herself into the drain where that little meowing was coming from. she found two kittens and she also found two frogs. the officer coaxed the kittens to come to her and was able to rescue them from the drain. teachers at the school immediately adopted the two kittens. not the frogs. the frogs just hopped off into nature. >> i'm -- if it was just the frogs in the drain would we really be covering this story? >> probably not. >> if the frogs were meowing then we would have covered the story. >> if they were saying bluto did it. >> do you remember that? very few, but some might. getting the kids out the door for school this morning, it's a great one, but we do have to watch out for that fog in parts of the bay area and we are
6:19 am
going to get some sunshine later today. i wanted to show you this shot of san francisco, it looks gorgeous and then notice the bay bridge just socked in with those low clouds and the fog. we've seen some fog drifting by and the visibility there cut down to basically a quarter into i will or less. watch out for that as you get ready to drive. and the seven-day forecast is up at the bottom of the clean, it's mostly clear as we look now at san jose. we have this blanket of clouds and then once again we're getting the kids out the door for school, you will need a light jacket, probably something nice and warm with our temperatures in the low 50s, but then look at the time they get out of school, it's going to be 60 degrees, a beautiful day ahead with a lot more sun. we do need it. we are going to see our high temperatures today in milpitas up to 58 degrees, 62 degrees in danville, 59 degrees in hayward, the upper 50s along the peninsula and palo alto 61 degrees, 56 degrees in the mission district today and 57 degrees in santa rosa.
6:20 am
now as we look at the forecast there will be a slight chance of rain in santa rosa and extending up 101 through ukiah, after that all clearing skies around the bay area, nice dry weekend. early next week i will be tracking not one but two storms that will be set to move in. the first one will arrive early on tuesday morning bringing in a quick round of rain and then we will have another larger storm system that could bring in some heavy sierra snow as well. that one making it into here on thursday. so we will have some wet weather on the way but we can enjoy a nice weekend and mild temperatures, too. inland areas will reach into the mid 60s and even upper 60s in parts of paris. mike has a lot more to report this time around. starting to earn that money for the morning report. we are looking over as you're trying to get to work, we're looking at the south bay an peninsula. that's just fine. over here we do have that crash over on the shoulder, they should clear those vehicles any second, south 680 past sunol
6:21 am
boulevard. that's why we have the slowing through pleasanton, clearing by the time you get in towards sunol. no problem for the dublin interchange. a build for hayward coming over towards the san mateo and dumbarton bridges. the bridges are moving nicely but the build is on. over here, south 680 a crash, maybe the second crash, both heading towards the walnut creek interchange on the shoulder right now, fog causing slowing across the carquinez bridge and through vallejo, we have that bottleneck toward highway 29. the richmond-san rafael bridge, sounds like a truck dropped a dolly westbound. there may be a quick break, we will be watching that. and the bay bridge toll plaza the break here because of the metering lights, the span itself is just fine, the backup going back to the berkeley curve, low clouds drifting around but visibility getting a little better, we can now see the lights along the tooefs.
6:22 am
for the drivers they have never had a problem it's been above the deck as far as their driving goes. coming up, an exclusive interview with the teacher who was arrested at a school board meeting after questioning why her boss was getting a raise. >> it just felt like it was a slap in the face to everyone i work with every day. >> coming up next on the "today in the bay," the reason that she worried about her students seeing that video. time now 6:22.

6:31 am
it's going to be a nice one not because of these temperatures but because we will finally see that sunshine breaking out. we will talk about what's ahead as we go into the weekend, your weekend forecast in seven minutes, but, mike, you have an update to the motorcycle crash. the motorcycle crash reports of major injuries now. i don't know, but i'm going to assume it's probably the motorcycle rider that was impacted most because that motorcycle hit a pickup truck where folks are usually shielded by a vehicle. that's northbound 880 getting over toward the transition on to the bay bridge toll plaza approach. you see the light traffic through the maze, but that will be an issue as you're passing by. one lane is blocked north through eek land around the bend, we will get more details but chp is busy over there. all these folks will be busy because the consultation on the roadways necessary through the orange highlighted areas, dense fog, kari has been talking about patchy lieu the north bay, napa

where this wall of destruction swept through. you can imagine being inside of a home like this hearing the roar outside, going outside, this is what it looked like, take a look. >> oh, my god. mom. close the door. >> reporter: and right now search and rescuers are saying about 75% of this area has been searched. today they will be going from house to house looking inside of the homes to make sure that no one may be trapped inside. this one has been cleared but there are more homes that have been buried. we understand that 59 homes were totally destroyed in this landslide and, again, the death toll is expected to rise. back to you guys. >> makes you wonder where would you even turn. hard to see. more concerns this morning after a san francisco international airport there was an incident. >> this is after another close call with an incoming plane leaving the faa to launch yet

another investigation. "today in the bay's" bob redell live this morning to explain how air traffic control workers prevented a possible disaster here, bob. >> reporter: correct, unfortunately everyone is okay. good morning, laura and marcus. this is the third time since july a commercial airliner has either landed when they weren't supposed to or almost landed on the wrong runway at sfo behind me. the most recent incident taking place this past tuesday morning. the faa says that aeromexico flight 668 was cleared to land on runway 28-r, the pilot confirmed 28-r to air traffic control but that pilot started to line up with runway 28-l where a virgin america airline was sent to take off to hawaii. air traffic control noticed the mistake when aeromexico was a mile out, about 20 seconds away from that virgin america airplane. a controller instructed aeromexico to pull up, circle around and land safely which it did.
6:35 am
mcmick karen who we spoke with says, yes, this was suppose but there was another than enough time for aeromexico to correct and that the system did work. all the backup systems kicked into place, controllers watched, saw he wasn't lined up properly. they gave the command to go around, he went around. >> i'm pretty confident. we have had a good safety record here. >> reporter: last july pilots on an air canada it flight ms. took the taxi way for a runway and dipped before pulling up to attempt another landing. you can see the photo on your tv screen, it illustrates how close they came to colliding with other aircraft on the frowned. in october another air canada flight landed at sfo despite repeated attempts to wave them off because there was an airplane still on that runway. the pilots once they landed say they had problems with their report. reporting live in millbrae, bob

6:40 am
inland areas. on sunday expect a slightly warmer temperatures, especially for the valleys. we will see a high of 64 degrees and the coast at 60 degrees. overall it's going to be a dry weekend but if you're heading down to l.a. it will be much warmer, up to 77 degrees. i did ask mike about highway 101 and it will still be closed throughout the weekend so you will have to find an alternate route and i imagine it will take you a really long time to get there. as we keep it a little closer to home. monterey will be nice as well into the upper 60s for the weekend and some mostly sunny skies. then if you're going over to heavenly it's going to be dry this weekend, we've had a little bit of some fresh powder in some of the upper mountain crests. we are going to have some sunshine throughout the weekend and highs in the mid 50s. if you get there and back by monday you won't have to deal with any more of the snow and any travel problems, but if you want to stay for the snow it's going to be a big one next week. >> looking at muir woods it will be a great weekend for hiking staying on those new year's resolutions, it will be in the
