pictures coming out of henderson kentucky. we had a similar scene? the midwest. these pictures coming out of iowa and north dakota where visibility was greatly reduced at times almost causing those white out conditions. let's take a look where this storm is right now. we've had a lot of rain up and down the east coast. that's moving away. on the western side of it we have heavy snow falling but it's right in between where we have some ice across vermont and new hampshire, up across central maine as well. we are going to see the possibility of icing remain an issue as we go through. if we could just get this to advance here for a second, we've got winter weather alerts for 32 million people. winter storm warnings, winter weather advisories. these will remain in effect as winds become gusty out of the northwest and start to cool

things down for areas where it's been mild the last couple days. as we go into early this afternoon, most of the snow and ice will exit northern new england but we are going to see a refreeze possible on the back side of this system. so even though nothing is falling from the sky as we go into sunday, we still could deal with very icy conditions. i want to point out the ice accumulations. a quarter of an inch to possibly three quarters of an inch of ice in maine that coats the streets. we also can see downed trees and power lines. another major story we're following, fallout continues from president trump's racist remarks about certain countries in an immigration meeting. congressional leaders are speaking out. all of this as the president gets his first physical since taking office. kelly, good morning. >> reporter: good morning,

craig. a long holiday weekend will be no easy escape from the stinging fallout here and in places around the world over the president's divisive and demeaning comments that lawmakers say he made during a heated conversation about immigration. all of this comes and continues to be sorted out as the white house says the president has a clean bill of health. the political stress test. president trump returned to the comforts of palm beach friday night after his first follow exam in office conducted at a military hospital. when he landed, the white house released a comment from the physician, a rear admiral. the president is in excellent health, but his political condition is not as clear. tense questions about race as the president paid tribute to dr. martin luther king, jr. >> we pledge to fight for his dream of equality. >> but dr. king's friend,

congressman john lewis implored the president. >> stop putting people down because of their race, their color, or their nationality. >> he's the furthest thing from a racist. >> reporter: the president claimed he used only tough talk but not racially offensive comments attributed to him at a thursday closed -door meeting o immigration policy. >> he said these hate filled things and he said them repeatedly. >> reporter: the white house pushed back. >> the language was not used and it's very clear that this is the democrats trying to derail this process. >> reporter: in current talks for an immigration bill the president wants to reduce certain programs for poor and disaster ravaged countries including haiti and some in africa. house speaker paul ryan was low key. >> first thing came to my mind was very unfortunate, unhelpful.

>> reporter: and two republican senators who were in this original conversation say they do not recall the president using this vulgar language. other republican leaders have avoided any comment at all and remember we are in a midterm election year now and some of this is already beginning to play out with challenges between candidates and incumbents in some congressional races. >> kelly o'donnell for us. thank you. elise jordan is a form policy adviser to republican senator rand paul. good morning to you. >> thanks for having me. >> "the new york times" out with an editorial. it says in part where to begin? how about with a simple observation. the president of the united states is a racist. it went on to say he's a liar. is this a shift in how media outlets are reporting? >> you have seen hesitation in the past for major mainstream

news organizations hesitating to call outright donald trump a racist. at this point after a contentious campaign, judging from donald trump's lifelong host of statements, the fact pattern is there. the definition of a racist is someone who makes judgment calls based on ethnicity or race and that is what donald trump's reported comments from this meeting this week with hill leaders represented. >> kelly o. just alluded to senator cotton being in that meeting, not recalling whether the president said this or not. lindsey graham apparently chastised him right after he said it to his face but hasn't said anything publicly. we heard that response from paul ryan. why have we not heard from more republican leaders screaming from the roof tops, shouting down this kind of racist rhetoric? >> well, it has been a slow evolving story and it has been a he said/he said and it started out with senator durbin talking about the comments and being

open. then you are slowly seeing senator tim scott said he spoke with lindsey graham and told a south carolina newspaper that yes, senator graham said those comments were said and then you see senator graham not outright denying but said i said my piece in the meeting and donald trump knows what i think of the language. you're seeing the slow trickle build effect. >> let's talk about what happened on thursday night. supposedly president trump working the phones, calling his friends to assess the damage, some of them saying he was, quote, dlbelligerent. talk about the timing of this and as far as damage control for the white house, what if anything can they even do? >> donald trump cares the most about what is being said about him in a given moment in a given day in the news. that is his primary concern. so he was doing essentially a victory lap of sort because he thought that hey, this rhetoric might even res naonate with my e which i think is so insulting to

trump supporters for the president to say he is actively trying to use this kind of sentiment to appeal to them. i think that's insulting on the part of the president. >> the conversation will certainly continue. thank you. president trump is also facing new questions this morning on a personal front. following a bombshell report that his lawyer paid an adult film star more than $100,000 for her silence right before the presidential election. nbc jeff bennett is at the white house. >> reporter: good morning. president trump's long time personal attorney is denying mr. trump had a sexual encounter with an adult film star while he was married to melania. it comes after a report alleging the act trress received a six figure payout to keep her from going public. new fallout following a bombshell report from "the wall street journal" based on anonymous sources saying trump

lawyer arranged for a $130,000 payout about an alleged sexual encounter with mr. trump. alleged to have come a month before the 2016 election around the same time the trump campaign was nearly derailed by the now infamous access holiday tape in which mr. trump can be heard bragging about being able to grab women. lewd comments he later dismissed. the journal says stephanie clifford told sources she met the president at a celebrity golf tournament in july, 2006. mr. trump was already married to me la melania at the time. the white house responding saying these are old recycled reports are which are denied. michael cohn denying the sexual encounter took place. president trump once again

denies any such occurrence as has ms. daniels. in a statement provided to nbc news which cohn says is signed by daniels, she calls the journal article absolutely false. adding rumors that i received hush money from donald trump are completely false. nbc news has not independently verified the statement. and neither the white house nor cohn deny or acknowledge the six figure payment. while there is no allegation of nonconsensual behavior in this instance, more than a dozen women have come forward with claims of sexual harassment and assault against president trump, allegations he vehemently denies. >> jeff, thanks. now to that devastating scene in california where search and rescue crews are working around the clock hoping against hope to signed survivors in this week's mud slides. an 18 accouvictim was found.

>> reporter: good morning, sheinelle. this is still very much a search and rescue operation. no one is the ground is calling this a recovery effort. we are well beyond the first 72 hours which means every single second now is so crucial and even then search crews know what they have to hope for. in the face of fading hope, this is what day five looks like in mo montecito. firefighters going branch by bra branch, sorting for any sign of survivors. >> this one really has hit close to home. >> reporter: the firefighters belong to this community. some scouring for their own neighbors. >> is that what it would be at this point? >> we've all seen before these miracles of survivors after several days. we're hoping we can have one of those miracles. >> reporter: crews are searching for by.

among them 17-year-old jack. his sister lauren was rescued after being trapped for six hours. their father david did not survive. >> it's all gone. >> seeing what's left of her neighborhood for the first time. >> it's hard to almost position myself because there's so little left. >> her cousin rebecca was killed along with two of her neighbors. >> this is awful. it will be so sad not to have this house, but my cousin rebecca died and i can't replace that. >> 18 victims now identified, entire families torn apart. last month we met this family evacuated to a nearby shelter during the massive thomas fire. 2-year-old lydia and her brother waited for the disaster to end. this week pasta was discovered dead. lydia still missing. a community buried under insurmountable grief still digging for a miracle.

there are more than 1,200 personnel engaged in this rescue. if there is a miracle waiting to happen, someone will be there to find it. >> so heartbreaking. >> it's hard to get your head around that. >> just the magnitude of the damage. >> our prayers continue to be with them. also this morning a major break in a murder investigation in the death of a university of pennsylvania student. police in california say a suspect is now in custody with the connection of killing 19-year-old. it is his high school classmate. good morning. >> good morning, craig. according to a search warrant the suspect told police he dropped off blaze bernstein. when they questioned him they couldn't remember his girlfriend's last name or where she lived and now he's been

arrested. >> orange county sheriff's deputies marched him into custody. once a classmate, and now a suspect in the untimely death. >> based on inconsistencies of the story of the friend, our investigation focused on this individual as a person of interest. >> bernstein was a premed student at the university of pennsylvania home on break in california. >> we do believe mr. woodward was acting alone. >> reporter: the suspect told police he picked up bernstein at his home. they drove to several places before ending up at this park where bernstein's body was found one week later buried in a shallow grave. >> the friend who admitted to being the last person with blaze at the park. >> reporter: police did not release details as to the cause of death or possible motive. prosecutors have not charged woodward. his arraignment is expected early next week. the case attracted widespread

attention from celebrities including kobe bryant. blaze bernstein's grieving parents thanked police and everyone who helped in the search and released a statement through their lawyer. >> by honoring blaze's memory, we hope you'll make the world a better place. >> now some other clues detectives noticed, several cuts and scratches on woodward's body that he told them were from a fight club. they also say he pulled his jacket over his hands to prevent his fingertips from touching any of the doors as he left the police station. >> thank you. some other news making headlines. the flu has hit every u.s. state except hawaii. but the cdc says it appears to be peaking with fewer doctor and hospital visits this month than in december. the flu has hit epidemic levels with doctors warning this strain is taking a drastic toll on

the warmest part of the day for the northeast is occurring now. the snow and ice will wind down this afternoon. morning freeze along the gulf we definitely saw an overnight drop in temperatures. in santa rosa right now, at 39 degrees, san francisco 49, hayward 44, and we're a little bit chillier than we were at this hour yesterday. as far as our temperatures for today, once again, expect to climb into the lower 60s throughout the afternoon. san francisco, a high of 63. expect some early morning fog paired with a nice clearing into the afternoon with mostly sunny skies along the coast, bay, and inland areas. still ahead, a 6-year-old boy fighting for his life after getting rabies from a bat. but his family has great hope thanks to a new treatment. plus a daddy daughter reunion you won't want to miss.

>> and your prediction is correct. we are expecting a very nice day, and nice weekend overall. if you look at the temperatures, though, they're slightly cooler than what we've been waking up to. we saw a drop in temperature in santa rosa. san jose 44, so let's get a quick look at that 24-hour temperature change. if you notice, not really seeing too much fog just yet, but if you notice in areas like san jose, ten degrees colder this morning at this hour than we were yesterday. santa rosa about 8 degrees cooler, and we are expecting a mostly mild, slash, cool afternoon into the evening hours. but get ready for early morning fog. within the next hour, hour and a half, we'll start to see some of that fog building in, which could make for dangerous driving conditions, so slow it down. i'll have a breakdown of when our next chance of rain is going to come in, how much rain it's going to be, and is it going to be as big as the last storm. democrats in the house say they will reveal a resolution in

family is holding out hope that the specialized treatment is going to work. nbc mia rodriguez is outside the orlando hospital where that little boy is being treated. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, craig. doctors here are using an experimental treatment hoping he might become the third person in the u.s. to survive rabies with it. it all started because of a bat infecting 6-year-old riker infecting him with race bees too late to get the vaccine. >> i picked him up and he fell to the floor. i said walk for me and he couldn't walk. >> reporter: now at an orlando hospital. doctors are trying an experimental treatment known as the milwaukee protocol. >> there is no known treatment for rabies, so what we do is we support the patient medically. >> reporter: that support means placing riker in a medically

induced coma and administering a specialized drug cocktail forcing his body to creates its own antibodies against rabies. >> the plan was to shut it down long enough sfor the response t come in. >> it's worked twice in the u.s., 18 times around the world according to the doctor who came up with the protocol. while rabies deaths are rare, only a handful of cases annually, around the world the virus kills about 60,000 a year. it's nearly almost always fatal unless a vaccine is administered. it was too late for the shots. >> he's my buddy, he's my boy, he's my everything. >> reporter: this morning his family is holding on to hope that he will become the third person in the u.s. to beat the odds with this experimental treatment. >> he tells all his friends my daddy will fix anything. i can't fix that. i've never loved anything or

anyone so much in my life, ever. >> reporter: the doctor confirms that just two days ago this treatment saved another rabies patient, a 14-year-old boy in brazil. riker's parents hoping for a repeat. >> not just his parents. >> when he said he felt helpless, like he couldn't fix it, my heart goes out. >> mia, thank you. you have another check of the weather? >> yes. we have very cold temperatures that are working into the northeast. take a look at where we were just 24 hours ago. temperatures have been tumbling. we've seen an 11 degree temperature change in indianapolis that is at 13 degrees right now. baltimore 22 degree temperature change. 37 right now. yesterday high temperatures were up around 60 degrees and today we're going to see them only in the teens back across pittsburgh. 13 right now. that's a 41 degree temperature change.

buffalo has dropped 46 degrees. 12 degrees colder right now than it was this time yesterday morning. as we go into tomorrow morning wind chills will be brutal. raleigh will feel like 14 degrees. on monday morning it continues to settle in to the northeast. boston will feel like 1. richmond richmond virginia will feel like 9 with a temperature of 16. we'll try to rebound as we go it's on the chilly side this morning across the bay area. santa rosa waking up to 39 degrees, san francisco 47, and down here at the south bay, also in those 40s. we're actually a little bit cooler than what we've seen all week long. today's forecast is expected to be mostly dry. expect some early morning fog to start building in by mid-morning into the afternoon. we can expect to see some sunny conditions, oakland a high of 60, san jose a high of 64. san francisco, 63, with mostly clear skies.

good morning. winter woes. more than 30 million people under winter weather advisories this morning. more than a half foot of snow in the east as ice covers roads from kentucky to maine. hundreds of flights already canceled. dylan will have more on the storm's path. political stress test. president trump gets a clean bill of health after his first physical since taking office. this as his administration deals with a firestorm of controversy after alleged racist language he used to describe immigrants from haiti and africa. now another controversy with a bombshell new report that his lawyer paid off an adult film star just before the presidential election. and no laughing matter.

let's start with the latest round of winter weather. you're tracking another winter storm. >> well, this current one that's moving through right now. oh, that's what you meant. >> last week as well, yes. >> exactly. they all run together after a certain point. yes, we have seen very dangerous conditions. icy roadways. also snowy roadways as l. look at this in tennessee. a couple of tractor trailers collided causing a major pileup on i-40 having drivers be very careful out there. there could still be a lot of ice because temperatures have tumbled and it won't melt. in the midwest several inches of snow fell in both north dakota and iowa and the plow drivers were out scooping it up. now it's going to get very icy. we've got snow through upstate new york. most areas are starting to clear out right now. even where it was all rain up and down the east coast, ice is going to be an issue. we have winter storm warnings. wins are going to get gusty.

wind chills will be brutal. as we continue through the day, the rain and the snow and the ice will exit most of maine by the time we get into early this afternoon and then it's all about the cold air that is surging in with temperatures dropping by as much as twe20 to degrees. we could see up to a quarter to even three quarters of an inch of ice that could cause significant power outages and downed trees and very, very dangerous roads. we're also looking at additional snowfall, about 1 to 2 inches across upstate new york. then this whole storm system will pull away. it's the cold temperature objection b behind it. >> also this morning there is more fallout from president trump's alleged racist remarks about certain countries during an immigration meeting as the white house scrambles to contain the damage. promine prominent congressional leaders are speaking out. all of this has the president gets his first physical since

taking office. kelly o'donnell is traveling with the president. she's near his mar-a-lago estate in florida. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, sheinelle. the president's fitness has been the subject of conversation and criticism. both his medical health and his leadership style. first the medical report. president trump was examined at the walter reed national military hospital friday. the physician who has treated three presidents is a rear admiral. dr. jackson told the white house that the approximate the is in excellent health. they put a report but the doctor will be in the briefing to provide details about the president's medical status. the job is known as the most stressful job in the world. the president is at the center of controversy over his words and attitudes on race. he says he used, quote, tough talk but not derogatory language debating with lawmakers, potential changes to a specific

immigration program aimed at certain countries that are often poor and in crisis. a democratic senator dick durbin of illinois said the president used a vulgar slur to describes countries in africa and also talked about admitting fewer haitians under the temporary protected status program. this all comes as president trump is negotiating with republicans and democrats on capitol hill an immigration bill to fund border security including the wall and also to provide certain protections to young immigrants who were brought here without documentation as children. that is making this conversation about his words and attitudes all the more consequential because it may have real policy implications as well. breaking overnight, a suspect is in custody after a high speed chase involving an apparent armed suspect and the greyhound bus across straight lines. a passenger on board the bus describes the terrifying ordeal. >> we tried to get him to calm

down. there was four or five people telling him you need to sit back down. he refused to. that's what i was actually on the phone with 911 begging for help. >> he went on to say the suspect threatened to kill passengers. the police chase started in wisconsin. spikes were deployed to flatten the tires with the bus coming to a stop in illinois. about 40 people were on board. rchl a 20-year-old man has been arrested in the murder of a u. penn student. he was taken into custody after dna evidence linked him to the death of college sophomore blaze bernstein. according to authorities the 20-year-old high school friend of bernstein was the last person to see him alive. investigators are still seeking a motive for the murder but won't release any details of the crime. spectators at a cycling event in australia were treated with a different kind of show.

thank you. now to a dangerous new challenge that has serious health consequences for teenagers taking part. officials are warning that teens are putting laundry pods in their mouths. all for a laugh that could have serious consequences. morgan ratford is here with more. >> this is one of those online fads, one of the internet challenges that's been posted and tweeted millions of times. teens are actually eating these laundry detergent pods just to get a little social media street cred but doctors say the laughs aren't worth it because when they're ingested they can be far more deadly than you might think. you may have seen the videos. or the memes. young people all over the internet shaking, stirring, even cooking pacts of laundry detergent. all so they can eat them as part of a new internet challenge. it started as a joke making fun of how much those little pacts

looked like candy. but the head of the consumer products safety commission says this fad is no laughing matter. >> it started out as a joke and a prank on the internet and it's gone too far. and the teenagers that are doing this need to understand that this is reckless, that this is a poisonous substance that they're putting into their bodies. >> according to the cpsc at least ten people have died from ingesting laundry pacts, a risk that's especially serious for young children who often mistake them for something sweet. l last year poison control centers received reports of kids five or younger being inappropriately exposed to the laundry pods. >> it was the most horrifying moment of my life. >> exposure that can cause serious eye damage. >> the side effects of ingesting something like this can range from some vomiting and coughing all the way to a loss of consciousness. >> that's why some companies have made their packaging more
