guthrie and hoda godpy. >> welcome, everyone. thanks for joining us. craig is in for savannah this morning. >> good morning. i thought of you last night as we watched that football game in my house. i know this was a heart break for the saints nation. >> all i want to do is redo the last ten seconds. but congratulations to had vikings. but first let's start with that fright in florida. a boat bursting into flames while shuttle passengers on a casino ship. dozens of passengers forced to evacuate, some into the water in the area's coldest day of the year. hey, carry, good morning. >> reporter: sadly, one of the passengers on the boat has now passed away. this was a shuttle boat that was

headed out to a casino cruise ship that then inexplicably burst into flames. this morning dramatic video showing the island lady casino shuttle fully engulfed in flames. the terrifying scene happening sunday afternoon, just off the coast near tampa. authorities say just minutes after setting sail, flames started shooting out the engine room. witnesses say the captain quickly turned the boat around heading to shore. >> we literally almost ran aground to the shoreline. >> reporter: passengers could jump into the water and run to shore. >> i can see there were people struggling to get into shore, crawling on their hands and knees. >> reporter: as the boat burned heavy smoke billowing from the wreckage, nearby residents raced to help with blankets, towels,

dry clothes and coffee. >> people were very cold, wet, scared. >> we took two people into our house and we let them shower and like kind of get better. >> reporter: this is what the island lady looked like before it burned, a shuttle boat that would ferry passengers to the tropical breeze casino boat farther offshore. a similar shuttle caught fire in 2004, but it was returning after dropping passengers off at the casino and only three crew members were onboard. this time 15 people were transported to area hospitals. one in critical condition. the rest suffering minor injuries. it is that one patient who is in critical condition who a spokesman says did pass away. a fire chief at the scene is crediting the boat captain with actually saving some lives, making that immediate decision to turn the boat around to get closer to shore. had he been a quarter mile out from where the fire began says

the fire chief, it could have been a much different story because the water there is much deeper. >> that quick thinking paid off. there are new developments this morning into the investigation into that false missile warning that setoff panic across hawaii. he was on assignment inside the bunker where that alert was accidently triggered hours before it happened. good morning to you. >> reporter: craig, good morning. we just so happened to be here looking into what a potential response to a nuclear missile attack on the hawaii island could be. nothing could prepare officials here, residents, tourists and particularly us for what that false alarm would be like. this morning the investigation is under way into how human error triggered a false emergency alert throughout the hawaiian islands, warning of an imminent nuclear missile attack. the alert causing mayhem was sent to phones and broadcasts on

televisions. >> a missile may impact on land or sea within minutes. this is not a drill. >> reporter: residents ran for cover scrambling to how to survive a nuclear blast. it took 38 minutes for the state to issue a correction, twice as long as it would have taken for a missile to reach hawaii from north korea. >> when it was realized it went out, cancellation button was pushed, however that cancellation button just stops message traffic from going out anymore. but the initial ones already went out. >> reporter: the fcc chairman is calling the false alert absolutely unacceptable. and members of congress are demanding answers. >> those responsible for this happening need to be held accountable and making sure this cannot, it cannot happen again. >> reporter: president trump was at his golf club when the false alert was sounded sunday. he said he would like into the incident.

the result was a mistake of a flaw in the early warning system put into place because of rising tensions between president trump and kim jong-un. we were given exclusive access to the civil defense bunker where the alert was accidently triggered moments before. david works for the hawaii emergency management agency. >> this is where a call comes in notifying us of a ballistic missile launch. >> so you're telling me if a ballistic missile is launched from north korea, this is where you're going to find out? >> that's right. >> what's the feel like when the phone rings? >> we were prepared to address it. >> reporter: but the exercise couldn't have prevented the error. it happened anyway, an erroneous double click that sent hawaii into a panic it will never forget. new consequences, new fallout this morning here on the island

of ohawue. the test of that early warning system have also been suspended pending an investigation. the real question here, guy, is how badly has this damaged the public's faith in this early warning system particularly if next time it actually really isn't a drill? back to you. >> legitimate concerns. >> we're going to bring in national security analyst jeremy bash with the latest on this. this had to be a terrifying 38 minutes. we saw parents putting their childrens into pan holes, that kind of thing. this was a mistake, but could that mistake actually end up leading to some kind of act of war? >> this was a huge wakep call, hoda. because although this was not the system that would detect an inbound missile, here's what the iwerry about. i worry that north korea could see an alert like that, think

that we believe an attack is imminent, they could undertake military moves and then you have the sparks that could ignite a larger military conflict. >> taking your concerns a step further, what do we know about that country's ability to communicate during a crisis? >> north korea's capability is very poor. if you think of the united states as a gold standard in terms of our system, our technology, and even we made this critical mistake, think about how much of a mistaked n could happen on the north korea side? when we're on a hair trigger alert, that's when mistakes could happen and you have an accidental conflict. >> there's a lot more to get to this morning. including president trump again defending himself after being accused of using racist vulgar language to describe haiti and african nations during a recent meeting on immigration. that controversy not going away

nations. the senators now disputing the account from rick durbin. >> it's a gross misrepresentation. >> i didn't hear it. and i wasn't sitting any farther away from president trump that rick durbin does. >> reporter: a durbin spokesman hit back. kregt is something that's built by being consistly honest over time. senator durbin has it. senator purdue does not. asking anyone who's dealt with both. last friday releasing a statement they did not recall the president saying these comments specifically. and they also appear to contradict lindsey graham's account according to tim scott who he reportedly told the headlines were quote, basically accurate. the controversy rebuilding the question on the president's

martin luther king holiday. just five days until a government shutdown unless lawmakers can come up with a spending bill. >> peter, thank you. >> breaking overnight, north and south korea have resumed what have already been historic talks between the two rivals. and this latest round could lead to history being made in the olympics. hey, bill. >> reporter: good morning, hoda. a second run of talks today narrowly focused on music. one of four north korean delegates is the leader of an all female pop band. wildly popular in north korea, and they discussed possible concerts during the olympics by that band. problem is they're all members of the north korean military, and they sing songs in praise of kim jong-un. so i'm not sure how well that will go down here. they did agree that a north korean orchestra of 140 will

play here during the olympics. and on wednesday there'll be a third round of talks to talk about the athletes in the delegation and a possible historic idea, a united korean women's ice hockey team. never been seen at the olympics before. the north koreans want a delegation of possibly hundreds. how they'll be accommodated and so on, these talks still at a delicate stage. and south korea irritated by the south, that these talks are only because of pressure and threats from president trump. north korea making clear on state media we're here of our own free will, not because of american pressure. so more talks on wednesday. hoda, craig? >> all right, bill. thank you so much. meanwhile at home, tens of millions are dealing with the return of much colder temperatures and a new threat of dangerous winter weather. >> dylan.

>> here we go. dilly, dilly. let's look at the snow moving through chicago right now. it's a clipper system that's very fast moving. while it will produce a messy commute in parts of the midwest, it'll move through quickly. we have winter warnings stretching all the way through texas. the pact this morning is snow to reduce visibility, and snow and overpasses could be slippery and this threat of possibly sleet. here's the front. you can see how quickly it moves eastward. moves through chicago and pittsburgh. w we do have some sleet possible. again, not a lot of snow. but up across new england we can see about 4 to 6 inches. but through most of the midwest we're looking at about 1 to 2.

just enough to be slippery on the roads. also on this busy monday morning there are new fears over the flu. this season is shaping up to be three times worse than last year emphasis nbc's gabe gutierrez. good morning. >> reporter: this year's dominant flu strain is particularly dangerous for children and the elderly. sadly, there have already been more than six times as many pediatric deaths so far this season compared to the same period last year. this morning the flu epidemic is hitting children especially hard. he was just four years old. >> one of the most difficult things i've ever had to do was tell my other children on saturday morning that their little brother wasn't coming home. >> reporter: the cdc now reporting 20 pediatric deaths so far this season compared to three at the same time last

year. in houston, texas children's hospital saw 17 times as many flu patients last month as it did the previous december. this woman's son got sick even though he had gotten a flu shot. >> it was so aggressive, i mean the flu hit him so hard. >> reporter: it's widespread in 49 states. alabama's governor has declared a state of emergency. and in georgia. > it's very bad. our wait times have gone up across the board. you can tell we do not have really the staff to keep up with the volume. >> reporter: the cdc says to protect yourself avoid contact with sick people and wash your hands, take anti-bacterial drugs if your doctor prescribes them, and most importantly get that flu shot. >> we know about 70% to 80% of those children that die aren't vaccinated. so vaccine really has been prove

except when i'm there, wearing the one i got for winning best at being the best. progresso soup you simply must taste it. the chp has now reopened all a very good morning to you, it is 7:26. i'm will go. chp has now reopened all lanes of interstate 280 in san francisco. nbc bay area sky ranger was flying over about 20 minutes ago just as traffic began flowing again. that is where a shooting earlier this morning shut down southbound lanes for several hours. it happened about 3:00 this morning at alemany boulevard. chp tells us between three and six people were shot inside one car and the driver brought everyone to a nearby hospital. condition of the victims is not known and officers so far are not saying if they know the motive. let's check in with kari she has a look at our forecast for this martin luther king day. >> we've had patchy dense fog

around the bay area, visibility in santa rosa down to about a half of a mile. we've seen also some dense fog in the tri-valley, livermore also a half of a mile. so you do need to slow down as we've seen that fog drifting around the bay area. it's still, though, mostly clear as we get a live look outside in san jose. we will see a mix of sun and clouds today, highs in the low 60s for the south bay, 59 degrees in san francisco and napa expect a high of 58 degrees and some upper 50s for concord over toward antioch. as we get a look at that forecast over the next several days rain moves in tonight and continues into early tomorrow morning and then wednesday will be dry as we look at thursday's forecast, another storm system moving in and a third one will be on the way by sunday. we will be watching three storm systems for the week. today all dry, though, for all the martin luther king celebrations. as people get out on the roadways, a look at the commute this morning, we're seeing a lot of green sensors indicating that there is a smooth flow of traffic and we can see that also on 880 through oakland.

south bay, for the east bay upper 50s there, for the peninsula expect a high of 60 degrees in redwood city. >> you can get your forecast anytime at the weather channel on cable. >> thanks so much. now, to a frightening sight for anyone who has before flown. a passenger jet padangling on a steep cliff. lucy ca lucy kafanov has that this morning. >> reporter: talk about a terrifying close call. authorities in turkey are still trying to figure out why the plane skidded off the runway. the plane went offcourse after the engine surged in power. it's a heart-stopping sight. a boeing 373, full of passengers, dangling off a cliff. one of the wheel s lodged above the wing. the engine ripped from the

aircraft, floating below. the chaos onboard captured on camera, as panick eked passenge rush to evacuate from the back of the plane. firefighters hose the smoking jet with water. emergency crews kept it from sliding into the sea. the flight took off from ankara, arrived in trabzon around 11:30. there was light rain and mist when the plane touched down and it veered and skidded off the runway, nose diving down the steep cliff. the plane got stuck, says this survivor. we were lucky that the mud was there. pegasus, the turkish carrier, apologized for what it called a runway excursion incident. miraculously everyone onboard survived. 162 passengers, 4 crew and 2 pilots. dirty and dazed after the ordeal, but alive.

good monday morning, i'm meteorologist kari hall. we've had some patchy dense fog around parts of the bay area, but as we take a live look outside in san francisco we are getting some clear visibility except for right there along the bay and also across the golden gate bridge. we will have some unhealthy air quality today, so it is a spare the air alert day, that means no wood burning. and in the north bay as well as the inland east bay unhealthy air quality. for the south bay, santa clara valley as well as the bay and coast, moderate air quality today. i've been watching the visibility going up and down around the bay area, but right now it's way down for santa rosa down to a quarter of a mile. we have a half a mile visibility in livermore, concord, a mile and three-quarters, while much of the bay area is just seeing those low clouds moving by. our high temperatures today will be in the low 60s and we will get some peeks of sunshine, a little bit more sun for the south bay. north bay will have mostly cloudy skies, temperatures reaching into the upper 50s and

"the island lady" was shuttling customers to a gambling ship but the captain noticed a fire in the engine room and headed back to port. he got close enough for his passengers to jump into the chilly waters and wade to shore. 20 people were taken to local hospitals. most were treated for exposure, anxiety and minor injuries. dozens of people were hurt in a walkway collapse. it happened at the stock exchange at the stock market in jakarta, indonesia. it gives way, falling on the lobby below. a chaotic scene as rescuers tried to reach victims through the debris. they have ruled out the collapse was caused by a bomb. they have investigating that. what do you have for the "morning boost" this morning? >> we want to say congratulates to all of the teams that won

[ applause ] good morning, everybody. happy monday. it's great to have you here on "megyn kelly." welcome on this martin luther king jr. day. we begin with the pressure to be thin in america, a subject we got into last week on this program. we talked about body shaming. and i have body shamed myself for years in an effort to stay thin. why did i do that? why? i grew up in america. i'm a woman born in 1970 in america, whose society has baked in on thin, as much as baseball and apple pie. magazines, social media, movies, you can't go anywhere without seeing size 00 models.
