tv   Today in the Bay  NBC  January 17, 2018 5:00am-6:01am PST

5:00 am
have a look at the forecast coming up. thank you for joining us, it's 5:00, i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia. we will get to mike in just a moment, but first a look at that forecast. >> and we start out with some fog this morning and we are going to see more of that as we go throughout the next several hours. allow some extra time to get to where you're going. check out the visibility right now, in san martin we are down to four miles so you still have an easy drive. look at livermore, three-quarters of a mile, that's not that far ahead of your head lights. and in concord we are down to about a quarter mile visibility, that tule fog rolling out of the central valley makes it hard to see. in half-moon bay visibility there is zero. right now we have temperatures in the upper 40s to low 50s and that's a milder start in san jose, but scattered rain moves in tomorrow and continues through friday. it will be clearing on saturday with a nice day, but a stronger storm will be here late on sunday, i will talk about all of that coming up in a few minutes,
5:01 am
but, mike, you're saying extra care through the cone zone? >> that's right. we always advice folks to slow down whenever we see anybody working on the roadway, caltrans crews deserve that. looking toward where there's fog through the livermore area, kari talked about three-quarters of a mile visibility, no speed slowing on most of the bay, but here it's unusually jammed up eastbound 580 over toward where we're doing paving work approaching grant line road. you will see flares, the closure of the off ramp possibly until 7:00 a.m., this could be as long as that slow down lasts, you may want to use the altamonte pass road through the area as well. again, tougher visibility where the highlight is, this yellowish-orangish color that will be the factor through the tri-valley. watch the construction crews on 580 and clearing through the oakland hills over the next half hour. no major slowing getting towards the bay bridge, pretty smooth easy drive. there is a minor delay from bart, watching that out of san francisco. back to you. >> all new this morning, several stanford students say they were
5:02 am
drugged at a fraternity party and can't even remember much of that night is that they include members of a sore front and two young men on the school's rowing team. kris sanchez is on campus going through some of the new reports overnight. >> reporter: hi there. i'm trying to independently confirm this troubling allegation. i have called the stanford police department, also e-mailed the stanford administration, the communications office, to try to confirm this. i haven't heard back at this point. so what we know at this point is based on the work of student reporters. now, the daily newspaper, the campus newspaper, the stanford daily cites a memo sent by the pi phi that several members were drugged on friday night. that article reports that they are a figure yated with the sigma khi sororitsorority. the independent publication
5:03 am
reports that at least -- that while there was alcohol present at least five students reported symptoms, quote, commonly associated with benzodiazepines, that is a class of tranquilizers often used as date rape drugs. that publication describes a potential culprit, but we will not report that until we can independently confirm with either stanford police, stanford administration or the university's title line office which investigates such cases. it is only 5:00 in the morning but because this is a troubling case we are definitely working the phones. i will continue to call this morning and as soon as i get confirmation i will report it to you here or on nbcbayarea.com. at stanford, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thanks for the latest there. another developing story we are watching, there could be a major immigration sweep in the bay area. senator dianne feinstein says that there might be a targeted attack by the trump administration. the chronicle quotes a source
5:04 am
familiar with the operation who says that i.c.e. agents are planning to arrest 1,500 undocumented workers in the coming weeks. if that report is true it would be the first wide ranging sweep since california lawmakers approved a landmark sanctuary state bill back in october. at that time the acting i.c.e. director said publicly that, quote, california better hold on tight. now, pete suratos will join us in the next half hour with a closer look at this one. low grades for the bay area on housing affordability. especially in the south bay. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell is live for us this morning and, bob, definitely something a lot of people are talking about. >> reporter: good morning, marcus and laura. website for apartment hunters called apartment list released within the past few hours a survey of 45,000 people nationwide that not only lists the most recent data on median rent but also ranks customer satisfaction, renters satisfaction in the bay area. some of these results might not surprise you, but others will.
5:05 am
let's take a look at san jose. the overall grade for renters in san jose they say it's a c, they give san jose high grades for weather and jobs but low marks for affordability and the commute time which probably is not a big surprise. you look further north in oakland, renters satisfaction there is a d, high marks for weather and public transit, but low marks for things like, again, affordability, safety and crime and quality of schools. san francisco actually got a decent grade overall satisfaction from renters of a b plus, high grades for weather, social activities, jobs and public transit. again, low marks for affordability. >> another thing we're kind of seeing across the board is that low affordability ratings aren't necessarily correlated with low overall scores at the individual level. so renters who decide to stay in their cities despite these high prices generally like something else about the city, whether it's the great job opportunities, safety, the school quality, whatever it is,
5:06 am
there's enough good that's causing them to stay in the city despite the high cost of living. >> reporter: and these are the bay area median rents for two bedroom apartments according to apartment list, san francisco, san jose and oakland. service is around $3,000, san jose around $2500, oakland just over $2100. i want you to look at the percentages. you look at san francisco and san jose, they are up slightly from the year prior, oakland surprisingly down almost 15%. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> something to contend with. thank you, bob. it is 5:06. new this morning authorities on the peninsula credit a next door website user for helping to nab a thief. san jose police say someone on next door was following a conversation by neighbors. when police were tipped off to the footage they identified the suspects from previous crimes. officers located and arrested the suspect.
5:07 am
they said he had also had stolen property from other cars. a man accused in six armed robberies across the south bay is off the streets and in custody. police in morgan hill say they arrested matthew de la rosa. one of his targets was an eyewear store called eye if i knowity. we told you about that break-in. they say the suspect was wearing a surgical mask and used a gun. police arrested him in hollister. an update on the effort to help a pleasant hill teenager suddenly paralyzed during a wrestling match. we covered this story yesterday. 16-year-old sophomore ryan joseph is paralyzed from the neck down. this after he was injured during a competition last week. his family is facing monumental medical costs and this morning a go fund me page meant to help ryan has reached $65,000, that's more than triple the amount 24 hours ago. ryan is still in icu at an east bay hospital. a quick follow-up for you now. apparently one day of the new
5:08 am
reservation system at muir woods wasn't all that smooth. the marin ij reporting some tourists were confused by the need for parking reservations and there is no internet access at muir woods. some people were turned away, they had to drive to find internet access, make a reservation and come back to park. but still worth going. absolutely. >> of course. >> right now we have mostly cloudy start as we take a live look outside in san jose and it's also been fairly mild. if you've been doing well sticking to your resolutions here is your jogging forecast in san jose. it's going to be in the low 50s, temperatures drop off a few more degrees around sunrise and then we will start to warm things back up once that sun comes out. we will have a mostly sunny day here, but that will not be the case all around the bay area. so we will talk about these high temperatures and the incoming storm, that's coming up in about four minutes, but mike gets us out there on the roads with a few issues for some of the drivers. >> that's right, kari.
5:09 am
first of all, the bay bridge toll plaza we have the cash lanes which have had about midway back the parking lot backup here. this is an issue. i'm hoping this will clear up before the real commute starts. this should happen over the next ten minutes. we will keep watching. a little cloud cover in the area but mostly this is spider web on the lens. looking over to the maps i will show you a clearer view of that web-like maze. these are all the major freeways and all of this morningish yellow highlighting the amber is showing fog, over in through fairfield much like yesterday, but now creeping all the way over through rio vista, antioch, brentwood, discovery bay, all these areas socked in. that will be a bigger deal for much of the east bay and down in toward the tri-valley, dublin, pleasanton, livermore and affecting the construction zone, we talked about grant line road still being closed right now. eastbound really jammed up possibly fort next hour or so. looking at a slower drive out of the area but through the silicon
5:10 am
valley and peninsula and even along the east bay no major issues for those freeways. back to you. it is 5:09 right now. coming up, fire in the sky, bright flash with a large boom has a lot of people talking about what they saw and felt this morning. youtube says it's going to crack down to protect your kids, but we've heard that one before. when "today in the bay" continues.
5:11 am
5:12 am
we're going to take a live look outside in fremont as it
5:13 am
gets already busy out there on the roadways. we have had some patches of fog rolling around the bay area again in morning. as we go through the day it's going to be a cool start, make sure you have on a nice warm jacket, but you will be taking it off later on today as we make it back into the mid 60s, pretty much like yesterday, with some sunshine, but then our rain rolls in. we will talk about when the rain arrives and how much to expect that's coming up at about 5:19. kari, we will stick with this shot for fremont because i'm talking about the road crews that were going on between mission and 237, the southbound side cleared early, the northbound side still may have a couple of spots with some flares. we are watching that and the effect of the fog on your commute coming up. still no word on what kind of illness caused an east bay elementary school student's death. this morning many parents are concerned and they tell us that they feel that they've been in the dark. the student that died attended kolb elementary school in dublin. last month monday the district
5:14 am
sent an e-mail of the student's sudden death and reportable disease. they advised parents to take immediate action and seek medical help in their child is sick, but the e-mail has only left parents with more concerns. >> the e-mail was very -- it raised more questions than it answered. it was what i would call very loose language and it left a lot of room open to interpretation. >> now, the alameda county health department is assuring that kids are not at risk by being at school and grief counselors will be at school this morning. the district says that they will be there as long as they are needed. the san francisco library's plan to microchip books is apparently back on the front burner. city leaders first presented the plan more than a year ago to replace the current barcode system. critics have raised privacy concerns though other libraries
5:15 am
have similar technology. the library has budgeted $3.5 million for the conversion. all eyes on the stock market this morning. >> that's right. we've been talking about it. scott mcgrew, a day after that dow crossed that 26,000 mark for the first time. >> just seven trading days after it crossed 25,000, laura. that should excite investors but it may be too fast for even the most enthusiastic of bulls. note the number on your right there, 25792, the dow 30 hit 26,000 and then dropped back yesterday and so that's where we will start today. there's nothing magic about 25,000 or 26,000, nothing special happens, they're just good benchmarks and a lot of people would point out the dow 30 industrial index is actually a lousy measure of the overall stock market, that only measures 30 companies. it's also worth noting the stock market is not a measure of the economy. they are not the same thing. we measure the economy using things like inflation and job
5:16 am
growth and industrial output. other news, 22 states attorneys generals are suing the fcc to stop its reversal of net neutrality rules. this includes our own javier basra from california. last month the fcc voted to roll back rules protecting net neutrality. youtube says it will screen each and every video made by its preferred creators, the video creators who get the lion's share of advertising dollars. this after youtube showed the body of a suicide body on youtube. they say human eyes will watch every second of each and every preferred video creator. there's two things to take away from. one, youtube that has been under criticism and each time, no, we will take care of that. we've heard this before. secondly as parents we are so careful about what movies our kids watch, what television they watch, handing them the ipad and letting them hit youtube is just
5:17 am
as inn advisable. >> sometimes they sneak on there and you will hear and be like, what are you watching? >> that's why it's important to report if you see something that's a little shady. experts are now saying that a bright light and what sounded like thunder in the sky above michigan was a meteor. this video shows that light -- that light sky lighting up over detroit last night. the american meteor society says that it received hundreds of reports of the fire ball last night all over the state and even in canada. the u.s. geological service says that there was so much shaking that it registered as a 2.0 earthquake. a nasa spokesperson says that it was definitely a meteor. experts believe that it broke apart after entering the earth's atmosphere. >> that's kind of scary. >> i do have a credential question, though. the national meteor society was
5:18 am
doing this. kari is a meteorologist -- >> people say that all the time. >> should we be worried about more than rain? >> when she walks into a room it lights up. >> yeah, right. what people don't realize how many meteors actually enter into our atmosphere every day on earth. so it is really interesting, though, that this one made it all the way to the ground. so it must have been really large and this is something that we will be studying. here is a look at that metro detroit meteor event. yes, it caused that 2.0 jolt on the usgs. it's called a balaid exploding meteor. this is something that nasa and that american meteor society will study closely over the next several days. let's bring it back home and talk about our weather right now as we start out with clouds in san jose. a look at our high temperatures, it's going to be much cooler in parts of the east bay, only 56
5:19 am
degrees for a high today in antioch. this is the kind of weather we've seen since the weekend because of that dense fog, that really doesn't clear throughout the day, but we will get some sunshine in san jose and morgan hill, palo alto expect a high of 63 degrees, warmer temperatures where we do get some more sun. here is our next storm system, we can see the center of that low pressure and the clouds extending out well ahead of that tapping. >> some subtropical moisture and that means it could boost our rainfall totals over the next couple days. then it will be rolling across the country and then moving into some very cold temperatures, one of the big headlines has been the snow that's been affecting areas all the way from maine down to even dallas. look at the temperature right now. it's 15 degrees in dallas, texas, right now. well, we are feeling much warmer air and as this system moves it will start to bring in rain tomorrow in time for the afternoon commute for much of the bay area and scattered off and on rain through tomorrow as
5:20 am
well as friday. saturday looks like the best day to get outside because on sunday the rain will be approaching with cloudy skies. rain late sunday night and this will be a colder storm that could drop those know levels and bring lots of heavy snow especially for the sierra. a look at how much rain we could see once the next couple systems move through, we are looking at in general about an inch or less for areas south of santa rosa but north of santa rosa will could be up to 2 inches of rain and in the sierra we're looking at the possibility of feet of snow, maybe 2 or 3 feet, especially in the higher elevations. we are going to have several storm systems moving in next week and once it starts on sunday it could continue into at least the middle of next week. look at those cool temperatures, only in the low to mid 50s over the next several days. and, mike, fog is the biggest factor for drivers right now. >> that's right. now that you've cleared up the fact that meteors probably won't be hitting up. i can't believe that. called out the meteors and kari gives us the detail.
5:21 am
there will be fog along the coast, half-moon bay registering zero miles for visibility, very tough for highway 1 but not a surprise. over in the east bay we have all of this slowing, that's a surprise, getting out of livermore into tracie, even down 80 continues to be jammed up. that may continue for up to 90 more minutes. we are looking at a slower drive approaching that exit. altamonte pass is an alternate to 580. keep that in mind. it's a slower drive for 580 but it is open through the area. a lot of fog registering through livermore, dublin, discovery bay, antioch, with a lot more fog than we have seen through the last few days. getting a break across the carquinez bridge, but there is still a word of caution for those folks. minor delays out of san francisco now that whatever maintenance track issue they had that's cleared up. there is a minor delay out of
5:22 am
san francisco and into san francisco the bay bridge, the live look shows you you may have a backup for the cash lanes. we are looking at the cash lanes at the bay bridge with our live camera. they were backed up and started to clear up just as the metering lights were turned up and now the fast track lanes sort of equal stress as far as the work on the brakes there, backed up to about the overcrossing now. laura and i are part of this next story. the question for you this morning, did you do all of your christmas shopping online? new this morning the record amount of money spent during the holiday shopping season. online shopping sales set a new

record during the holida 5:25 right now. new this morning, online shopping sales set a new record during the holiday season in 2017. a deeby analytics reports sales during the holiday season hit a record $108 billion that's up from 15% from the 2016 shopping season. mobile was the big driver for all those online sales. tonight the host of the "today" show will appear on the tonight show, savannah guthrie and hoda kotb are set to talk with jimmy fallon this evening. you can watch that right after the 11:00 news right here on nbc bay area. it was a big night in the big apple for nbc bay area. our investigative reporter and his team accepted the alfred dupont columbia award last night in new york. >> thank you to minus team. these people right here behind
5:26 am
me, these are some of the best in tv news. >> it's one of the broadcast journalism's most prestigious awards. nbc bay area is one of just five local news stations in the country taking home the prize. our investigation exposed serious issues with the use of police officers on school campuses and found students of color and students with disabilities are disproportionately being arrested at school. >> that's really nice to see. congratulations to the whole team. such a humble great person as well. coming up, an nbc news exclusive. facebook under fire once again for not protecting its users. the reason some former execs are calling the tech giant a living breathing crime scene. first a looming immigration rate could hit the bay area. we are live with what we're hearing about today. -san rafael

5:29 am
welcome to wednesday morning. taking live look outside. s curve up in san rafael. a little haze in some parts of the bay area, but a pretty mild start, not bad at all. quickly approaching 5:30. good morning and thanks for joining us, i'm laura garcia. >> and imt marcus washington. let's head over to meteorologist kari hall who is focusing on what we can expect this morning as we walk out the door. >> well, for some we have to deal with that notorious tule fog in parts of the east bay where visibility is down to a quarter of a mile and three-quarters of a mile in
5:30 am
livermore, that's been drifting across the delta. we've seen patchy dense fog in the north bay as well. low visibility in spots, slow it down and use low beams on the head lights. as we get a look at our high temperatures today the clouds will be very slow to clear, if at all, for parts of the east bay. so that's why antioch and concord will be 56 and 57 degrees. in morgan hill 67 degrees, that's where we will get some sunshine today. also in san jose. i will talk about that, the highways and also what's ahead for the weekend coming up in seven minutes, but mike starts us out with what's happening at the bay bridge. no surprises. we do have the backup at the bay bridge. the metering lights are on so maybe the surprise is for this wednesday we do have the backup. the approach is a little slower off of 880. we will look at your map, not quite so bad on the speed sensors, but then it amber highlighting, we are looking also creeping down as kari talked about toward highway 4, into the tri-valley and this is
5:31 am
the tule or valley fog. it will slow you down. we are looking at a slower drive because of a disabled vehicle. just off of 580, the castro valley y, we're looking at something that is trying to be cleared there. we will track that as well as your slowing out of the altamonte pass because of the paving work getting in toward the altamonte pass is a problem for east 580. back to you. at 5:31 happening today a renewed effort to get california students to renew their daca status. >> this comes as we're hearing reports of a possible major immigration sweep in the bay area. pete suratos is live at uc berkeley and is watching all of this for us. pete, there's really a lot going on with this this morning. >> yeah, that's right, a lot going on on this specific issue surrounding daca, but as you mentioned you've got uc
5:32 am
president janet napolitano who will hold a news conference regarding the dak ra applications. this comes on the heels of the report from the san francisco chronicle of a potential massive sweep of undocumented workers throughout all of northern california. here is the details that we're getting in that san francisco chronicle report. according to a source familiar with the operation, they're telling the chronicle that agents with immigration and customs enforcement are planning to arrest 1,500 undocumented workers in the coming weeks. we've heard tough language from the acting i.c.e. director in the past who has said, quote, california better holded on tight. i.c.e. did not comment on this specific operation according to the chronicle. if this does happen it would mark the first wide ranging sweep since california gained sanctuary status back in october. that sanctuary status came as a result of governor jerry brown signing sb-54 into law which allowed undocumented immigrants to cooperate with law enforcement without fear of being deported. when it comes to daca renewals,
5:33 am
requesting are being resumed following a preliminary injunction over the weekend after lawsuits were filed by the university of california and office of the attorney general for the state of california. now, california's attorney general javier becerra will be at the news conference in sacramento which is set to take place at 9:45 a.m. pete suratos for "today in the bay." also this morning we are waiting to see if congress will take action on immigration. talks have stalled after president trump rejected a deal by both parties. trump goes to capitol hill today. now, with friday's government shutdown deadline looming further complicating negotiations. the trump administration -- administration will ask the supreme court to overturn a judge's ruling so that they can end the daca program. now to an nbc news exclusive. more troubles for facebook. three silicon valley insiders are telling nbc news why they think facebook is dangerous for its users. one of the men is a former facebook employee, another a former adviser to mark

zuckerberg, and a third an early investor in facebook. here is part of what they're sayin saying. >> people are fundamentally put into these groups on facebook, what we would call filter bubbles, where it appears that everyone agrees with you because all the content is stuff that you like, right, it's what they think you like, but what it really is stuff that serves their business model and their profits. >> one group member also calls facebook a living, breathing crime scene from what happened during last year's presidential election. strong words there. you can catch a full interview coming up on the "today" show which starts at 7:00 right after "today in the bay." family members are speaking out about the husband and wife now accused of torturing their 13 children inside their southern california home. authorities in perris say one of the children escaped from the home on sunday and called 911. deputies later discovered the other 12 children inside that

nation. no decision was made last night. stay with nbc bay area as we continue to follow this story. officials will be taking a closer look at the anderson dam in morgan hill. this is video of that dam working overtime during last february's rains. today at a special meeting the santa clara valley water district will discuss the dam's seismic retro fit project. you may recall our reporting about a year ago that the dam built in 1950 does not meet today's seismic standards and could be damaged by a 7.25 magnitude or greater earthquake. good morning, folks, we are looking at a pleasant drive right now despite some of those conditions which are tougher for drivers. the coast, half-moon bay had zero visibility, the latest reading shows you have a few miles that you can likely see, but there may be patchy dense fog there as well as around much of the bay, the south bay and peninsula clear visibility there.
5:37 am
i told you i would talk about eastbound 580 still jammed up from greenville to just high of midway. there is a closure for the grant line road, paving done there, but the off ramp for both directions are closed and that may go on until possibly 7:00 a.m. so that could be an issue getting out of livermore in toward tracy. the rest of the community moves well out of the altamonte pass. the yellow from livermore up in toward the carquinez bridge including highway 4, brentwood and discovery bay as well, definitely fog on the road weather index that will be an issue. our live cam why ra in dublin shows it's not a problem around the dublin interchange. >> that's a pretty cool map. >> i share my maps. kari and i share. >> i am already mapping out the weekend, too. i'm excited about what's going to come our way with some rain, but saturday we will be in between those systems so that will be your day to get out
5:38 am
there. look at these temperatures, it will only be in the low to mid 50s on sunday the showers will be rolling back in, but it looks like with the latest run of the models it does bring that rain in later on sunday, so you may be able to get out there early on sunday morning and enjoy a little bit of sunshine. this saturday we have the women's march in san jose, also in oakland and san francisco, but as we take a look at the forecast for san jose we will have some temperatures only in the mid 50s with some mostly sunny skies. so wear something nice and warm. if you are escaping it all, heading down to paso robles and going to vineyards it will be in the upper 50s this weekend, not as warm as we normally see but looks like it will be dry there all weekend long. yosemite will be nice and chilly, some snow falling. just allow extra time to get there and back and that snow may be heavy especially late sunday evening with our high temperatures throughout the whole weekend only in the 20s and lower 30s. let me know what you're doing
5:39 am
this weekend, what's going on, send me a tweet at @karihallweather and you may see your event or the place you're headed to featured right here. i will do another weekend forecast coming up in about an hour, but in three minutes i will have a look at today's temperature trend for san jose. coming up, all new this morning, animal outrage in the santa cruz mountains. >> i'm not one for vigilante justice, i feel like this is someone who needs some help and maybe some support. >> a man admits to running down and killing animals. angering one community, what nbc bay area is learning about possible criminal charges. plus -- >> we clearly are waking up to a reality and injustice that has been occurring for some time. >> former "today" show host ann curry just gave her first interview in years. what she's saying this morning about ousted "today" show host matt lauer and the me too

5:42 am
good wednesday morning. right now at 5:42 you wake up and walk out the door to patchy fog. let's go to cupertino. right now our temperatures in the low 50s, that is where we will stay through at least about 10:00 and then it does quickly warm up today into the mid 60s.
5:43 am
a very nice one with some sunshine in cupertino, parts of the south bay also getting some sun today but that won't be the case for the east bay. we will have some clouds and fog in some spots and then some approaching rain for tomorrow. i will have the details on all of that, it's coming up at about 5:49. and here is your view of palo alto. highway 101. a very clear view and clear drive right now. we were talking about what may not be so easy to see, we will outline that coming up. new this morning, a list is out detailing what experts believe are the most pressing threats facing the globe. the world economic forum polled hundreds of experts on 30 potential global risks. in terms of likelihood, extreme weather events, natural disasters and cyber crime topped the list of global risk, but in terms of impact, weapons of mass destruction topped the list, followed by extreme weather and natural disasters.
5:44 am
new this morning out of santa cruz mountains, people who live in ben homen are outraged after someone drove through a group of wild turkeys killing several of those birds. they were a group of 40 or so that residents say typically strut through their neighborhood. on saturday someone on a pickup truck plowed through the flock, the neighbors believe up to ten were struck, at least three of them killed. neighbors held a vigil because they say the birds are like mascots. >> horrible. we feel awful. i felt bad. i couldn't see why anybody could possibly think of doing something like that. >> nbc bay area's bob redell spoke with the fish and wildlife agents. they say that they've located the man who ran down the turkeys and that he admitted to doing it, but not intentionally. it's still possible he will face misdemeanor charges. new this morning, breaking her silence, ann curry spoke moments ago on cbs this morning. curry left "today" under difficult circumstances five years ago and has not addressed it since.
5:45 am
