from the coastal areas. >> here is a map to show you where that earthquake actually hit. it happened in the gulf of alaska not far from anchorage. a tsunami warning was issued for parts of alaska and canada overnight. a tsunami watch was issued for the entire west coast but as i mentioned it has since been canceled. however, officials in san francisco are still warning people to stay away from the water for the next 12 hours. >> we have full team coverage this morning. so you are prepared as you head out the door. we want to begin with meteorologist kari hall to really explain how the tsunami watch actually works, kari. >> as soon as there is an earthquake, especially in an area that may cause some waves moves out away from that earthquake and where that epicenter occurred, we are given a heads up and the timing of when it could arrive. when that tsunami watch was issued we were on alert as you could have a short amount of time away from where that earthquake occurred to actually prepare and move away from the
6:01 am
coast. so that 7.9 magnitude earthquake was at 1:31 in the morning and that caused some waves underwater to start to move. so as that is -- that watch is issued, here is how you should prepare. you should make sure that you are tied in and know exactly what's going on, keep the tv on nbc bay area. if you do have to leave, make sure that your smartphone is on nbcbayarea.com or you have the app. and then you should also make sure that you know those evacuation routes and plan to leave with your family. make sure that everyone knows exactly what's going on. then if a tsunami watch is issued you should pack your valuables and important documents and it's unclear at that time when you would be able to return. so just make sure you have everything you need spatial in the coastline and also in san francisco, but we do not have the tsunami watch, but that's something we will continue to monitor as the day goes along. >> that's good advice. we should all prepare for an
6:02 am
earthquake, but the watch has been called off this morning. our team coverage continues with "today in the bay's" pete suratos he is live in san francisco with a warning for people to really continue to stay away from the water. >> reporter: good morning, laura. yeah, we just spoke to the department of emergency management here in san francisco, a spokesperson that we've talked to and they said they are still telling people to stay away from the coastline for at least the next 12 hours despite the fact that that tsunami watch was canceled. here he is moments ago explaining the importance of staying away from the coastline because of those dangerous currents. >> as of 4:00 a.m. this morning the tsunami watch was canceled for the u.s. west coast and that including san francisco, however, you know, there's always the possibility of dangerous currents in the water even though the watch has been canceled. so it's advisable that you stay out of the water at least for the next 12 hours. in the event there is some dangerous currents out there
6:03 am
that, you know, you can get in trouble in if you are in the water. >> reporter: so i want to point out that includes shoreline areas, marinas and harbors. we were at the marina green for our last live report, that would be one of those areas considered to be in that tsunami zone, but you see that he says there to stay away from the coastline for at least the next 12 hours and an important note, he said if a tsunami were ever to hit to always go inland. that's an important piece of information he wanted to share with our viewers. we're live in san francisco, pete suratos, for "today in the bay." >> certainly helpful information there, pete. we want to continue with that "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in santa cruz this morning to show us the conditions there. certainly the current thing that a lot of people were talking about. >> reporter: good morning, marcus. the number of people who live on these boats behind me in the santa cruz harbor you have to imagine they are very relieved this morning because they were awakened by harbor patrol officers overnight to let them know that this tsunami watch was
6:04 am
in effect and that they might have to evacuate. fortunately as we've been reporting that watch has been lifted so these people are safe here in the harbor. this is something that people here take very seriously because of what happened several years ago back in 2011, you will recall that japan earthquake, the 9.0 magnitude earthquake off the shores of japan that created a large tsunami that destroyed parts of japan and had a huge impact here on the west coast in the santa cruz harbor, that wave came in, it sunk 17 vessels, damaged many more and estimated it caused around $17 million at least in damage to the infrastructure. so again, people here will remember that, know that this can happen here even if the earthquake is hundreds of miles away like it was overnight in alaska. reiterating what the san francisco department of emergency services was saying, we spoke with the national weather service out of monterey, this he said there is still a chance that the bay area, the
6:05 am
northern california coastline could experience some sort of tsunami experience, and i'm quoting them on that, and we're talking, again, about stronger than usual currents. something to keep in mind if you're swimming out in the ocean or if you are on a small boat or a kayak. reporting live here in santa cruz, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> san francisco telling people to stay away from the coastline areas until about 5:00 today. big reminder for everyone along those areas today. now, as we mentioned thousands of people evacuated from their homes in alaska after that earthquake. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live at the usgs this morning in menlo park, updating us on those new updates that you're getting, kris. a lot of things could change minute by minute. >> reporter: that's right. things happened very fast, marcus. we know this is a very powerful earthquake, a 7.9, but luckily that tsunami threat is now averted for us here and also in alaska. but here is how the usgs described what that earthquake actually felt like and how it
6:06 am
happened. the 7.9 occurred as a result of a strike slip faulting at its location, the pacific plate con verging with the north america plate. it is a sideways movement kind of like what we saw along the hayward fault, what we saw in napa a few years ago, also along the an andreas fault. it was strong enough to trigger a tsunami warning for parts of alaska, the most serious kind of tsunami advisory. this is a line of people taking that sear seriously, evacuating kodiak alaska by car. kodiak island is south of anchorage so getting up to higher ground quickly was critical for those folks. it seemed pretty orderly, but the folks were rattled. >> i got dressed and came out to my living room and i have a great view of downtown and, you know, all.gb;háhe traffic goes y house on the evacuation road up
6:07 am
to the high school, i'm two block358jáz the high school. i was watching all thet)ñ peopl walk.from downtown and coming up and walking across the $"street. some cars weren't even slowing down to stop to let them pass. >> this morning on twitter i posted the difference between a warning, a watch and advisory so you can familiarize yourself because the next time it might not be a drill for us. i also posted what the usgs describes as that strike slip if you want to find out more about that. a lot of us who live in earthquake county are interested in the science of it all and it's nice to be able to learn about it when there is no damage that we know of at this point. in menlo park, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." our breaking news coverage continues online. we' been posting updates all night long. head over to nbcbayarea.com for the instant coverage. 6:07 on your tuesday morning. looking live in washington, d.c.

right now at 6:30, a tsunami watch for the entire west coast has been canceled. this after a massive earthquake off the coast of alaska overnight. this happened not far from anchorage. thousands of people along the alaska coastline were evacuated. good morning and thanks for joining us, i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. we have team coverage this morning so you're ready to head out the door. you know what's going on. we want to begin with meteorologist kari hall who breaks down exactly what a tsunami watch really means. >> good morning. yes, it was a 7.9 magnitude earthquake, this happened at 1:31 in the morning in this area in the gulf of alaska where you see that large yellow dot. that shows where the epicenter was and when we get an earthquake, especially one like this that happens under water, that jolt and the movement of the earth causes waves to move out away from the epicenter.
6:30 am
there was a tsunami watch issued shortly after that to see if there was a potential of waves moving away from that and it was dropped as we haven't seen any major movement here, so the good news is that there is no high tsunami threat, but it is definitely a good reminder of what we need to prepare for here in the bay area as there could be something like this happening in the near future. we want to make sure you're prepared, but once again, no tsunami watch issued for the bay area, but we will be watching out for the potential of any more earthquakes after this and any after shocks as we go through the rest of the day. a lot to watch here. also an incoming storm for the bay area and some dense fog this morning that may affect you as you head out for your drive, but, mike, you're also tracking a major crash in the east bay. that's right. the fog was the big issue in a few minutes ago. 20 minutes ago this crash southbound 880, look how jammed up the northbound commute is

coming past the coliseum. southbound side just shy of that camera shot jammed up now coming past 23rd. 980 is where you hit the brakes down to the coliseum. the northbound the distraction slows you from 66 up to the scene. 580 much clearer. sky ranger is heading out to see what they can see if they can get there because there are low clouds hovering around much of the bay. we will track the fog, the backup at the bay bridge and the crash in oakland, there's another farther south we will talk about that coming up. back to you. it's 6:31. back to our team coverage of the massive earthquake that happened in alaska. 7.9. "today in the bay's" pete suratos live at the marina green in san francisco with a warning that was going out for people to continue to stay away from the water, even though the tsunami watch is now called off. >> that's right, laura. that tsunami watch has been called off but they're telling folks to stay away from the

coastline for at least the next 11 hours. we've been bouncing around san francisco right near the san francisco marina green, this would be considered a tsunami zone. you have the marina to your left and the homes are over my other shoulder. this is an area that would have had to prepare for an evacuation when the first tweet was sent out around 3:30 this morning. we will show you the tweet when it was canceled. you can see on that canceled tweet it says to stay away from the coastline. so that's the shoreline areas, marinas and harbors, they're saying those areas could still be dangerous. i want to show you a tsunami zone's map. if you look at that map from sf 72 alert.org, you can see the areas of concern if a tsunami were to hit really when that tsunami watch was in place those areas that would have had to prepare for an evacuation, but i did speak to the department of emergency services here in san francisco and he had this important tip to share with our viewers this morning.
6:33 am
>> for a tsunami specifically the best piece of advice is go inland and go to high ground. when you get that warning, if you live by the coast, follow the blue tsunami evacuation route signs and go inland and go to high ground. >> reporter: so that was an important piece of advice from frances zamora saying to go inland or to go to higher ground if a tsunami were to ever hit, but the important piece of information to take away interest that tweet following that canceled tsunami watch is to stay away from the coastline. live in san francisco, pete suratos for "today in the bay." the tsunami warning issued shortly after the quake mobilized police in kodiak, alaska, to take steps to warn residents there. >> i just want to again remind everybody this is not a drill, this is an actual tsunami warning. everybody get at least 100 feet above sea level. >> right now this video posted by nbc about the same time showing residents in kodiak evacuating to higher ground.
6:34 am
you can see that line of cars there. right now residents in kodiak are still being told to remain in place and that's because the harbor masters say that they noticed receding water levels. at the same time state troopers in alaska so far have said that there are no reports of any waves making landfall in kodiak. our breaking news coverage continues online. we have been posting updates all morning long. we sent out push alerts to the smart phones just as soon as that tsunami watch was issued. head over to nbc bay area for instant coverage. new this morning a lengthy police standoff at a south bay hotel is finally over. this is video we received in just the last couple of hours showing broken glass and law enforcement officers inside the room where it all played out. police now tell us the suspect was taken into custody without incident a little after midnight. it started sunday night at the wyndham hotel in south san jose. we brought it to you all morning

>> her face was purple. he was really -- he was really -- he was -- he was doing the man thing on a woman, on this little teeny thing, you know. i mean, she was little teeny fragile. >> police caught up with the suspect nearby and arrested him. he faces multiple charges. police say if green had not noticed what was going on this story could have ended far worse. at 6:36 we have new details to share with you this morning on how a man accused of brutally killing an antioch teenager evaded arrest for decades. last month we told you that police arrested mitchell bay coup bakem. he is charged with abducting, raping and killing a 14-year-old girl in 1980. east bay times reports that investigators had cleared him as a suspect. the paper cites recently released court records showing that bakem took a polygraph test
6:37 am
that showed inconclusive results. he told police that he was at a bar at the time of the killing and his aunt vouched for that alibi. he has not yet entered a plea in the case. new this morning california is one of a handful of states with traffic laws that make people safer that's a word from a group called advocates for highway and auto safety. this is a live look at highway 101 in palo alto. things moving along there. the group put out a map highlighting certain states. you can see a lot of red and yellow, that's bad, but look at california, it's green, that means the state is significantly advanced in adopting safety y?z laws, these include laws that encourage use ofavseat belts, motorcyclelbi safety seats. the state has safeguards to prevent teenage drivers and prevent distracted and impaired driving. i think we could work a little harder on having people park closer to the kurn and closer to each other to fit more folks on the curb, that's a personal gripe around the school zone. 880, this zone as well people
