"today in the bay" starts right now. good morning, it is 4:30. thanks for joining us, i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia. let's check that forecast, in fact, right now. a little foggy when i headed out there. >> patchy dense fog around parts of the bay area this morning. we will be tracking that rain moving from north to south across the bay area as the day goes along. as we get a look at the radar we can see the downpours well to the north of the bay area, but

once again that will start to move in later this morning into the north bay, early afternoon for san francisco the east bay starting to see the rain by about 3:00 to 4:00 and this will give us a very soggy and slow evening commute and bringing in some pretty decent rainfall totals. so this is something we will be watching for the day. right now it's all about that fog and we've seen it drop down to a quarter mile visibility down in the tri-valley and also in the north bay. mike, now you're tracking a serious crash in the north bay. i am. chp's report did not talk about fog or visibility being a complication but it is a deadly crash on highway 121. let me show you where the fog lays out, as kari talked about parts of the north bay, rio vis vista, livermore, quarter mile visibility showing up on her maps. we take you up to highway 121 right near waters road and monticello and looking at the deadly crash off of the freeway.

the activity is out of lanes. chp says no lanes are blocked but we are concerned about the serious crash and fog in the area. the rest of your bay shows an easy drive. we will watch for the changes. back to you. at 4:32 to a developing story in the south bay. a violent crime spree in san jose and this morning the search continues for the suspect. police say they are behind a carjacking and armed robbery in the same night. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live in willow glen. what have police been able to tell you this morning? >> reporter: i can tell you that you are going to want to listen to this story whether or not you will i have in willow glen, but live in san jose. this is one of the crime scenes. the spree seemed to stretch into west san jose and also towards san jose city college and i'm going to show you why our sources believe the same crew may be at work. this was the scene last night here where i am, this is a residential street blocks from downtown willow glen and blocks from the willow glen elementary

school. police say this is where a man was robbed of his wallet at gunpoint. the crew then sped off in a red pickup truck nearly hitting two wome women. >> got out and i heard this like little bit of commotion and i heard slamming doors and then i just -- we just hear like the car gunning it to go down the street and i just pressed myself up against the car because it literally came right in front of me, zoomed right past and the guy came out and said, hey, did you guys see that car? did you see the license plate? he said i just got robbed at gunpoint and they took my wallet. >> reporter: just before that our night crew was at a different scene, a carjacking scene near san jose city college, that's where a suspect crashed into another car. surveillance video shows the crash and then the suspect seeming to flee into another getaway car. what was the getaway car? our sources and witnesses tell

us that it appears that those folks left in a red pickup truck. so at least we know who san jose police might be looking for, though they are not saying much at this point. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." thank you for that update there. another shaker in the south bay last night. this time a 3.6 magnitude earthquake followed a minute later by a 2.7 quake. they struck around 10:00 p.m. and was centered in the hills between gilroy and watsonville along the an andreas fault zone. those quakes registered on our nbc bay area seismograph. on the left of your screen that blip, people felt this in san jose, sunnyvale, the peninsula, even as far north as san francisco. so far no reports of any damage or injuries. new this morning a santa rosa police officer waking up with a broken nose, this after a homeless man punched him in the face. police say the officer was breaking up a fight outside the safe way on mendocino avenue. witnesses say one of the men in the fight tried to attack a safe

way worker. the suspect ran away, the officer chased him, tackled him, they fought until backup arrived and the suspect was arrested. the suspect faces felony assault charges for hitting that officer. en san leandro city manager is on paid administrative league. kris zapata is being investigated on accusations of sexual misconduct. sexual advance claims were made by the ceo of the davis street family resource center. this is a san leandro non-profit. johnson claims that zapata suggested a romantic relationship for extending the pay date of a $1.5 million loan to the resource center. the city council says it does no the tolerate nor condone harassment. zapata will remain on leave. coincidental death, two east bay men die within days of each other after snorkeling in maui.

they didn't know each other but happened to be at the same beach in maury. both men were snorkeling, on saturday an inside if i had man from castro valley dade and on saturday brian beyer died. >> i know that he was excited about his trip and really looking forward to it and it's just tragic. >> a third man died while snorkeling yesterday in south maui, that man visiting from canada it. doesn't appear that the deaths are linked. the southern california parents accused of torturing their kids are due back in court. prosecutors will ask a began to ban david and louise turpin from contacting the children. a group has received around $120,000 in donations. it's 4:36. coming up next on "today in the

wall street is set to open higher this morning following a mixed session yesterday, the dow slipped slightly into the red while the nasdaq closed a at record high on the back of threat friction's positive earnings report. look for data today on existing home sales, also earnings from ge, ford and comcast, that's the parent of nbc universal. the dow falling three points to 26,210, the nasdaq rising 52 to 7,460. toys "r" us will close a fifth of their u.s. stores. the company is trying to ee am edge from one of the largest ever bankruptcies from a sperlt retailer. they plan to overhaul their customer loyalty program and convert several locations into co-branded toys "r" us and babies r us stores. you can using gool assistant to play netflix but it can be a bit of a hassle if you have more than one netflix profile. now google home and other devices can match your voice to a specific profile as long as you link your account to the apps video settings and this should help make hands free netflix watching relatively

4:45 for you right now. welcome back to "today in the bay." if you didn't know we are under a microclimate weather alert today as a new storm is expected to sweep through the bay area in just a few hours. live pictures now from san francisco where later this morning that rain is expected to hit the north bay and san francisco first. you can see right now a very foggy start to our morning. >> i brought my ugly jacket today in preparation for the rain. >> so yesterday i said wear your cute shoes today, it's like wear your ugly shoes, the ones that you don't care about getting wet. >> make sure the person who is wearing them think they are their ugly shoes. >> you wore your ugly shoes today. >> don't say that to nobody today.

it's one of those days, but you have to be prepared for anything. we will have some changeable weather as the day goes along so it starts out foggy and cold and then we're looking at the radar showing this rain that's not north of us that will be working its way into the bay area as the morning goes along. the seven-day forecast is up at the bottom of the screen, you will see that we will have rain today and tomorrow. look at how cold it is right now in santa rosa. so you do have a wear a nice warm maybe ugly coat this morning and 44 degrees in oakland and 45 right now in san francisco as you get ready to head out the door. visibility is all clear right now in san jose as we're getting dressed this morning you do need that umbrella and also something nice and warm. our temperatures stay chilly and we are also seeing some pockets of some reds and yellows in there indicating some really heavy rain and that's exactly what we will see as this continues to move closer. as we go through the timeline today, santa rosa, you will start to see the rain by late morning early afternoon. look at all of the red in there,

that indicates that this rain is going to be pretty intense for just a short period of time. it moves into san francisco by about 2:00 to 3:00 this afternoon, east bay as well and then we will start to see the leading edge of that making it into san jose by about 4:00 to 5:00 this evening and it will be raining throughout that evening commute and then still some scattered showers in two areas just north of there as we go into tonight. as we head into the day tomorrow we will have these little spotty individual showers and storm cells moving through and they will have the potential of bringing in some isolated lightning or maybe even some small hail. so we will be watching out through that for tomorrow even into the evening, this is going to be with us off and on for at least the next 48 hours. as we get a look at what's happening with our winds, our winds will start to pick up as we go through the day, coming up from the south at about 15 to 20 miles per hour may briefly get a

little bit more gusty, but we are not expecting all day some strong winds as that storm system moves in. so as we go through the weekend, all of this moves out of here and we will have several days to dry out. mostly sunny skies, temperatures warming up as well, it's going to be a cool start to the weekend. as we look at the inland areas reaching into the upper 50s and low 60s, it's going to be nice with mostly sunny skies and i will continue to track that rain as it moves closer. mike is trying to give you a look at what's happening at the tri-valley. >> exactly because, kari, you showed what we're showing here with our live camera. there are low clouds and fog in the area. here are the head lights moving through 580 right by a couple auto dealers off the side of the road. i zoomed the camera out so you can see the streetlights as well. see how there is this glow by the light, that's why you don't use the high beams in fog because that will just reflect back off of the water particles. reflection and refraction. it's not just that one spot

there, it's this whole section of 580 out of the altamonte pass up through the central valley. if you are in the north bay, rio vista toward vallejo as well. we consider with that advisory with folks, lower visibility. clear san jose, along the peninsula and hayward, no problems for oakland as well. a smooth drive for your travel times and even on the rails no delays. altamonte pass and -- altamonte corridor express, capital core door looking great. even the fog in the north bay, no problems for 101 or across highway 37 right now. back to you. >> thanks so much, mike. 4:49 right now. happening today the 70-year-old driver who drove a minivan on to the sidewalk on castro street in san francisco is expected in court later this morning. cellphone video shows the horrifying moments that happened saturday afternoon. police say the suspect kenne$ rotter was driving under the influen influence. thankfully no one was hurt. rotter faces multiple charges including attempted murder.

a first for the south bay, new housing specifically for lgbtq young people who are homeless, it's all coming to santa clara county. the county board of supervisors is providing funding for the proposal. research shows there can be anti-gay and anti-transgender í shelters. anti-transgender maybe lbgtq homeless youth have told county officials they feel safer on the streets. supervisors invested in other affordable housing options for the homeless community. in the east bay ac transit is looking for the public's input as it proposed fare hikes for trips to san francisco. the transit is considering raising the fare by $1 in july and by another dollar over the next two years. right now fares range from $1.10 for seniors and youth to $2.25 for adults. road repairs will continue in the new year in san jose. city council is fueling over $70 million into paving and patching 100 miles of roadway. here is a look at some of those

department for denying happens -- a gay couple sues the state department for denying citizenship for one of their toddler twin sons, the twins share the same egg donor mother but they have different fathers. one twin has a dna of a los angeles native, the other has the dna of his husband an israeli born man. the lawsuit alleges that the state department denied citizenship to the child because the boy did not have a biological connection to the parent with a u.s. citizenship. plus the pope is condemning the, quote, evil of fake news. pope francis comparing the use of fake news to the biblical story of the devil who disguises a certificate pent persuaded eve to eat the fruit of the forbidden tree.

headed to the bay area. we are under a microclimate weather alert this morning as heavy rainfall moves in. be sure to grab the umbrella as you head out the door this morning. most of the bay area will be hit by this > it's going to stick around for quite a while once it gets here, but we will start out with dry conditions this morning and we want to make sure you have the heads up before you head out for the day. so here is a look at where the rain is now. still north of the bay area. we can see some really heavy pockets of rain. as we get a look at the timing here we are right at noon and it starts to move into santa rosa and san rafael as well as napa and into san francisco by about 2:00 today and then for the east bay you will see the heavy rain moving in at about 4:00, mountain view as well, and into san jose in time
