>> good morning, everybody. our.top story is one that everybody is talking about, the latest chapter in the toous gymnastics sex abuse scandal. >> a judge sentencing larry nassar up to 175 years in prison and telling him she just signed his death warrant. in a moment, we will talk exclusively with one of his most prominent victims, aly raisman. but first, kate snow is joining us. >> good morning, hoda, savannah. within a 24-hour period, a judge sentenced larry nassar with his crimes and because of his history working at michigan state university, two u.s. senators called on the university's president to resign and then she did. overnight, the president of michigan state university stepping down amid the sex abuse scandal rocking the school and the u.s. gymnastics organization. lou anna simon writing in her resignation letter in part, to the survivors, i can never say

enough that i am so sorry that a trusted, renown physician was really such an evil, evil person who inflicted such harm under the guise of medical treatment, addinging as tragedies are politicized, blame is inevitable. as president, it is natural that i am the focus of this anger. some victims addressing simon directly during larry nassar's sentencing this week. >> how could you the? what's wrong with you? have you no decency, ma'am? >> the university denies accusations it ignored complaints about nassar for years while he was a doctor at the school. the ncaa is investigating. >> i have just signed your death warrant. >> a dramatic culmination wednesday of an emotional seven-day sentencing hearing. >> as much as it was my honor and privilege to hear the sister survivors, it is my honor and privilege to sentence you. because, sir, you do not deserve to walk outside of a prison ever again.

>> judge rose marie aquanis sentencing the former doctor to between 40 and 175 years in prison for molesting young gymnasts. the judge, incredulous, read from a letter nassar wrote to the court asking to be spared from having to listen to one gymnast to another. >> i was a good doctor. >> at 54, nassar is expected to die in prison. his victims, vindicated. >> i think 175 years is exactly what he deserves. >> olympic champion simone biles tweeting he will to longer have the power to steal our happiness or joy. >> the monster is behind bars, but he had tons of people who let this happen. >> which is why usa gymnastics says in a statement it supports an independent investigation that may shine light on how abuse of the proportion described so courageously by the

survivors of larry nassar could have gone undetected for so long and embraces any necessary and appropriate changes. but that may not be enough for olympic champion aly raisman. who accused usa gymnastics of complicity when she spoke out at nassar's sentencing last week. >> i have represented the united states of america in two olympics and have done so successfully. in both usa gymnastics and the united states olympic committee have been very quick to capitalize and celebrate my success. but did they reach out when i came forward? no. >> also late wednesday, a faculty athletic rep for michigan state reportedly also resigning after saying she lost the heart and desire to support the university's administration after speak, president simon. hoda. >> thank you so much. aly raisman is with us now exclusively. good morning. >> good morning. >> you heard the sentencing, up

to 175 years. do you think if your heart that justice was served yesterday? >> no. it's not something where you just instantly feel better. you know, we need to hold these organizations accountable. usa gymnastics, united states olympic committee, msu, they need an independent investigation. this is bigger than larry nassar. we have to get to the bottom of how this disaster happened. if we don't figure out how it did, we can't be confident that it won't happen again. >> let's talk about you. you walked in that courtroom and i wass thinking about you standing there. i've seen you on some of the biggest stages in the world with the eyes of the globe looking at you performing. on this day, you stood in that courtroom. how does that experience compare to the pressure that you felt in the olympics? >> you know, i was talking about this with the my mom and i said, in that moment, i almost felt like i was going to compete because at the olympics, you block out everything. in that moment, i blocked out everything. i forgot that people are

watching me. i forgot the media was over will there. i forgot that larry was right there. and i just spoke and i felt like i really had had to be strong. i feel a responsibility. but after, i will be honest, i was -- i almosts passed out. i had the worst headache for hours. and even since then, i still don't feel good now. it's very -- it's hard to put into words, but i -- it makes me literally sick, all the stress and the trauma and everything. but for that moment, i had to be strong. and -- but i'm very, very exhausted from it. >> what was he doing when you were speaking? >> he actually looked at me the whole entire time. every time i made eye contact with him and even when i stared at him, he looked me in the eye the whole entire time. it was -- it was crazy. i did not expect that at all. >> when was the last time you saw him before that moment in court? >> the last time i saw him was at training camp in 2015. i've seen him a lot on tv and

online. and it is every time you see him, it's just -- it's crazy. but i did look at photos of him online before i went in there just to mentally prepare myself. i don't know how i feel, but when i walked in there, being with this army of survivors, and even -- i didn't know, you know, most of these girls and these women, but i just felt an instant connection. we were hugging each other. we just -- we really are an army of survivors and this is just the beginning for us. >> your words are so powerful. you say he deserves a life of suffering spent replaying the words delivered by this powerful army of survivors. and what struck me about your words, aly, was that they weren't just said in that courtroom. those big women's marches, i was looking, there were signs that they were they were quoting your words. one said i have both a power and a voice and i'm only just beginning to see them. we are a force. and i love the one that just say what a aly raisman said. we are all here. we have our voices.

we're not going anywhere. you get emotional even think about that. >> i can't even the put into words how much this means to me. i never, ever imagined this kind of support in my wildest dreams. it is incredible. i don't even have words. but i can't thank everyone enough for the support and i motivates me to do more. >> speaking of words, dr. nassar has words after that and these were his words. no words to describe the depth and breadth of how sorry i am. i am shaken to the core. and in a written statement, he said to the judge, hell hath no furry like a woman scorned. do you think he even gets what happened, what he's done? >> no. i don't think he understands. i mean, the fact he wrote a letter to the judge a few days prior saying it was unfair and he shouldn't have to lisp to all of us speak. that's why in my statement i did call him out and say how dare you say this is hard for you? imagine how all of us feel.

it's just -- he did he deserves to suffer. it's disgusting what happened. >> usa gymnastics has gotten rid of some people and announced some big internal investigation. have they done enough? >> so i recently found out, a according to my knowledge, larry nassar did not have a medical license in texas, which is where we went to the rarn and trained. it's a national team training center and the olympic center. >> he was not licensed there? >> not to my knowledge. whether they know or didn't know, that is a problem. we need to investigate how this happened. how is that possible, he doesn't have a medical license in texas? >> why do you think usa gymnastics didn't hear you, didn't hear the others? what was the motivation not to do anything? do you think.? >> i have no idea. i think for so long -- well, actually, i guess i do have an idea. for so long, they put medals, reputation and money over the

safety of athletes. even now, the united states olympic committee just spoke out monday for the first time. they've been quiet this whole time. >> so after you spoke, before -- in this courtroom and since then, have you been contacted by usa gymnastics? >> no, no, i have not been contacted by anyone. >> no one reached out to say hey, what else happened? >> no, nothing. they say they want an independent investigation right now, but it's easy to say that when there's so much pressure and everyone is watching, but they don't -- the. >> the judge said, and i'm going to end with this, leave your pain here and go do magnificent things. what are the magnificent things that you're going to be doing? >> i want to make sure this never, ever happens again. i ended my statement saying that i hope that everyone one day will be educated so that they will now how to see the warning signs of a predator so they'll never, ever have to say the words, too. and i meant it with all my heart. i'm very passionate about creating changes and making sure abuse never happens. >> aly, you are strong and

powerful. i love that you came over here to see us. >> thank you. >> thank you. now to this breaking news we mentioned at the top of the show. the president touching down in the swiss alps this morning. it's what he said about the russia investigation just before he left that has washington talking this morning. ke kier simmons is in davos this morning. >> this far from home, president trump cannot escape the washington inquiry. i was here a year ago when the chinese president used this platform to claim international leadership. now for the first time in almost two decades, a u.s. president has just arrived. president trump touching down in switzerland. for the president, it's a chance to put the focus back on the economy as robert mueller's probe intensifies back home in

washington. at the white house wednesday, mr. trump telling reporters he wants to cooperate with the special counsel and will sit with an interview with mueller. in the past, the president calling an interview unlikely, but now saying his lawyers tell him had it could happen within the next two or three weeks. still, president trump adamant, neither he nor his campaign did anything wrong. >> here's the story, just so you understand. there's been no collusion whatsoever. there's no obstruction whatsoever. and i'm looking forward to it. >> late wednesday, white house special counsel ty cobb clarifying the president's comments about testifying underoath, telling nbc news mr. trump was speaking hurriedly before leaving for davos, addinging the president expressed a willingness to testify under circumstances still being negotiated by both sides. for now, though, the president heading high into the swiss alps, taking part in the luxurious summit many presidents

overwhelming. >> i will miss seeing her every morning before school and kiss her and tell her i loved her every morning before work. >> bailey and another student died when a student marched into the high school and opened fire. her parents say she loved music and art and wanted to be a nurse. >> she loved everyone. she never had a harsh word to say about anything or anyone. >> i would take her to the school and give her a kiss and tell her i loved her and she got out of the car. >> reporter: when you're hearing these gunshots what's going through your head at this time? >> to tell the honest truth the only thing was disappointment. why would this kid ruin his life and other people's lives. >> i was getting out and i knew i just needed to run and if he

didn't hit me he didn't hit me. i'm guessing it was luck, the lord was on my side at that moment. >> reporter: it was the 11th campus shooting in the u.s. so far this year. >> have we as a nation become numb to these school shootings? >> i feel like we kind of have in a way. >> reporter: missy jenkins smith would know, shot and paralyzed at a shooting in west paducah in 1997, two years before columbine, now a couple lore at a nearby school. >> the students i work with are looking at school shootings as normal. to me, it's not normal, it's scary how normal it is. >> reporter: for the parents of bailey holt, normal seems very far off. >> she was just the best kid ever. i just want to pray for all the other victims, too. >> hug your kids. >> tell them you love them daily because you just don't know if it's going to be the last time you get to do it. >> reporter: bailey holt was standing next to a close friend who was shot in the chest. he's now in the hospital recovering and is expected to

leaving the hospital. >> reporter: this was jovanna, at an outdoor concert just hours before her live would change forever in an instant. one of about 500 injured in the deadly mass shooting in las vegas that left 58 people dead. the 30-year-old wife and mother of twos was shot in the head, the bullet hitting her brain. this is jovanna today. >> her progress from the day i first met her is nothing short of miraculous. >> hi, everyone. >> more than three months after she was put on life support, she is talking and smiling. >> on october 1st, a part of me changed that night. even though i will not be the same old jovanna, i will come back stronger. >> even though some thought she would never recover, her family refused to give up hope. >> her gunshot wound was severe, but we as a family, we left it in god's hands. and here she is.

paris's -- france's national weather agency says paris is under orange alert. that is the second highest flood warning level in the country. with more rain on the way, authorities fear this river could.top 20 feet by saturday. this morning, paris is preparing for a flood. boat traffic halted, the city's bridges unpassable. in some parts, the river has burst its banks. this river is still rising. >> very dangerous. >> yeah. >> what is the worst case scenario for you? >> we have to stock lots of food in the house, candles, our generator. we have to survive. >> the question on the minds of many here, will this deluge turn into the feared flood of the century? ? a catastrophe like the one that struck in 1910 when the river surged by 28 feet making paris look a lot more like venice.

i felt like i'm safe. i never did a shoot in my underwear before. terrifying. i was uncomfortable a little bit. i was scared what if i didn't like the images, i have to approve so many. i pulled her aside saying, i don't know what to do, i'm uncomfortable, i'm supposed to be being like confident. and we had this amazing moment where she told me to love myself. >> i'm not -- part of the real message is women supporting women. her being able to come to me. we made friends just by that, by having that connection. that's a message to all the young women to be there for your friends, tell them you're beautiful no matter what. >> iskra, how did you get that confidence? were you born with it? it's something young girls struggle to find. >> definitely. i relate to so many people who feel like they're not good enough. it's perpetuated by images in the media, messages that we shown that we have to look a certain way, act a certain way. i struggled with body

bart directors are about to good morning. it's 8:56. bart directors are about to meet to receive an update to plans to extend train service into the south bay. this comes as bca announces an extension on wrapping up a design plan for downtown san jose tunnel. the u.s. government is helping fund the project. and is now giving designers an additional three months to come up with the blueprint. there's still a lot of debate about whether that tunnel should
