5:00 am
>> and i'm laura garcia. mike is here, vianey is in for kari this morning. >> it's cold and just in time for that storm to move out for the weekend. yeah, this weekend if your plans involve being outside, bike riding or maybe you are just going on a nice little run, well, it's going to be beautiful. we are expecting the 30s and 40s to eventually climb into the 50s, but right now what we're starting to notice on that map is some fog in the area. peninsula right now at 44 degrees, tri-valley 39, south bay 44 and that patchy fog also expected for areas of the north bay, concord as well. 39 degrees, san francisco right now at 45 in the east bay at 41 degrees. now, as far as your temperature trend and what you can expect into the weekend, i will have details on that in just a bit. overall the speed sensors showing you green around the bay, but not that green for the wet roads, maybe some damp conditions, we have seen them on some of our bridge cameras. highway 4 disabled vehicle just reported getting over toward i-80. that's really one of the only things going on for chp.
5:01 am
a little register of fog in the north bay and that's been basically the case for the last dumb of weeks. the bay bridge toll plaza we do have the backup forming for cash lanes. we will see how things shake out over the next ten minutes as all cash lanes should open. breaking now, another crime spree involving young people overnight in the bay area's largest city. >> it's another snapshot of a larger problem plaguing san jose over the past month. kris sanchez is live nearest ridge mall with a look at the new video coming in. i know you've been covering some of the previous crime stories involving youth as well. >> reporter: right. the scene is clear here now because the four juveniles who were arrested here, their parents picked them up. they didn't go to juvenile hall, that's not how it works. let's show you the video of where the scene was active this morning. this is where police tell us that those four minors were in the stolen pickup truck, it looks like an suv because it has a camper shell. they hit the curb, blew out a tire and officers then took them into custody.
5:02 am
they were waiting for their parents to show up. the teens will be cited and released. there has been a rash of crimes committed by minors and the san jose police chief concedes that part of the problem is that juveniles face limited consequences for crimes like these. just last night in a story you only saw on nbc bay area, we were on scene in san jose's evergreen neighborhood where sters busted a group of suspected car thieves, some of whom were too young to drive. officers went door to door with long rifles and k-9s, the four suspects were taken into custody, they were all between 16 and 14. >> we had a rash a few summers ago, i was out here two summers ago, and we took care of it and when a crew gets arrested the next one moves in. >> reporter: now, evergreen has seen a dramatic increase in burglaries recently, but as you can see from this crime reports map it is not the only neighborhood. the icons on your screen represent violent crimes,
5:03 am
property crime and auto thefts reported in san jose to san jose police in just the last three days. i'm going to link you to that map on my facebook page because you can search by zip code, you can search by street name, you can see what's happening where you live. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you, kris. also breaking, a crash in san jose involving a young person and there are reports this morning this may have stemmed from a police chase. this is a look at that scene off of highway 680 at alum rock. you can see that white car over there to the left of your screen right there. police arrested a young woman. our newsroom is actively reaching out to police to find out more about the circumstances that led up to this crash. now to a developing story this morning, a live look at davos, switzerland, where president trump is about to take the podium there to give a keynote address at the world economic forum happening there. this comes as nbc news has confirmed the president ordered that special counsel robert mueller to be fired. the story first reported by "the

new york times." the order reportedly came last june but the president backed off. this morning president trump is denying the report. "today in the bay's" edward lawrence joins us live in washington, he's monitoring all the overnight developments for us. edward, the president calling this fake news. >> reporter: yeah, he's using that familiar term, laura, that he has used over and over and over again, calling this a fake "new york times" story. now, it's interesting that robert mueller, the special counsel, would have known actually that president trump wanted to fire him through conversations that his investigators had with the white house counsel. president trump ordered robert mueller fired last june when he learned the russia investigation widened to obstruction of justice. but later packed off when his white house counsel threatened to resign rather than carry out the order. the president responding to a report by "the new york times," later confirmed by nbc news. >> mr. president, did you seek to fire robert mueller? >> fake news, folks.
5:05 am
fake news. typical "new york times" fake stories. >> reporter: the president's lawyer responded, stating, we decline to comment out of respect for the office of the special counsel and its process. >> i would do it under oath. >> reporter: this comes on the heels of the president saying publicly he would go under oath and answer the special counsel's questions. the white house also lays out the most detailed plan to give 1.8 million undocumented immigrants who came to this country as children citizenship over 10 to 12 years. in a cnbc interview this morning president trump appeared confident that his new immigration plan will work. >> look, we're going to try to make a deal on daca. we have a good chance of making t what we need is we need the wall, with he need security. >> it was certainly helpful that he said that he thought there should be a path for d.r.e.a.m.ers. >> reporter: in exchange for the concession to democrats the president said he would get $25 billion for a border wall and allow only spouses and children in through chain migration as
5:06 am
well as end the visa lottery program. edward lawrence, nbc news, washington. and protests outside of the immigration and customs enforcement office in san francisco are expected to continue today. the group blocked the exit at the building last night. protesters say that they are fed up with i.c.e. raids, detentions and deportations of undocumented immigrants. the plan to interfere with those plans, here are a couple of those demonstrators. >> and the actions that are being taken here, specifically the i.c.e. raids, are really unacceptable. they're unamerican. >> we believe that people should be in the streets and that they should stop physically these raids. >> now, the protests ended peacefully when a car used a different exit. activists say that religious leaders are expected to gather there later today. reports that new affordable housing may be coming to san jose. the mercury reports today potential mixed use developments may come to three plots of land currently owned by vta. right now the sites are all

parking lots, one near vta station, one near a stop. vta officials consider these properties underutilized and want to revitalize transit friendly communities with affordable housing options. a bay area firefighter and formerly cal and oakland raider player is talking about his brush with death in oakland this week. at least 18 bullets struck his car and he survived without a scratch. this happened wednesday night shortly after he left his girlfriend's house on 102nd avenue. joseph echema says that he took the wrong turn, pulled over to take a phone call and the next thing he knew bullets were flying. >> in the line of work that i do you see people passed away, you see people in car accidents, you see some pretty bad stuff, but i've never been in a situation where i thought my life was in danger. >> police say that shooter fired up to 50 rounds. reload, echema says that he just
5:08 am
tried to duck out of the way of all those bullets. so far police have no suspects or motive. it is 5:07 right now. an update now on congestion in livermore and plans to stop commuters from using one particular road. the problem is tesla road east of greenville road most mornings and afternoons drivers from the central valley jam that rural road. last night 150 residents met with the alameda county supervisor to come up with a solution. according to his office they all seem to agree on longer speed bumps. there's also talk of adding a stoplight at tesla and greenville roads. proposals are being taken for the change to renovate a historic piece of land in san francisco. the presidio trust is taking proposals to renovate ft. scott, the last available parcel of land in the area. all together we are talking 30 acres of land with 20 buildings with picturesque views of the golden gate bridge.
5:09 am
there is a catch, however.;ñjf1o in buying must focus on working to advance social an environmental change in society. here is the ceo of presidio trust explaining why. >> the reasons we're focused on organizations tackling the social and environmental issues of our day is because it's in line with what the presidio trust a focused on. making sure this is a park for everyone, regardless of their background and also making sure we contribute to the environmental health of the planet. >> it will not be a cheap renovation for those interested as the costs could range in the ballpark of $200 million. applications are being taken until june of this year with a final decision possibly coming in the fall. and we're starting to see some fog rolling in, especially for areas in the north bay. right now we're seeing some limited visibility in santa rosa, along the napa area and also concord. if you are driving through
5:10 am
remember to turn on the low beams and if you have fog lights that would be your best option. we are noticing a nice little 24-hour temperature change for napa, 3 degrees colder. we've been waking up to chilly temperatures. today really is no different, we're seeing 30s and 40s and that temperature trend in santa clara within the next couple hours does eventually show a climb into the 40s but one thing you are going to notice, not a cloud in sight into the afternoon. by 12:00 we will be at about 54 degrees, plenty of sunshine, topping out into the upper 50s for santa clara, possibly even 60 degrees in san jose. it really will give a chance for those roads to dry out. we could use that chance. the roadways starting to clear up a little bit in the cash lanes. yes, as all cash lanes open just after 5:00, the cash backup starting to clear, but we are starting to see more volume, so this is when we determine whether or not the metering lights will be an issue. we'll track it. so farther not on. back to the maps, there's fog registers on our road weather index in the north bay. vianey talked about damp roads
5:11 am
and also slowing highway 4 heading towards coupling sky way westbound, a traffic break because they are trying to move the disabled vehicle to the shoulder. it's 5:11. coming up next on "today in the bay," a story all new this morning. no tears allowed, the brand-new research out of california, can crying kill a woman's career? and the president sits down with one of our colleagues for a one on one interview, we will bring part of that to you when "today in the bay" continues. at stanford health care, we can now repair complex aortic aneurysms

5:15 am
the main reasons why women try at work. researchers, professor kimberly elzak says there are right ways to cry at work. >> telling people that you're trying to stop crying and you're not doing it on purpose, so i'm really sorry, this is very stressful time for me or this is a stressful project and if you just -- if we can just take a little break i should be able to continue in a minute. those kinds of things really help a lot. >> the professor says men are raised not to cry while growing up while women are, but she says men take out their frustrations with anger and that can oftentimes be seen as strength and in some occasions rewarded. continuing coverage of the flu epidemic. some schools in florida are shutting down today to try to stop the spread. that move follows news that another child in florida has died. the 12-year-old's family says
5:16 am
they're still struggling to understand. >> this temperature was 981aqt degrees and then within just a couple of hours they've found him. he had already passed. that's why we don't -- you can't understand how that happened. >> now, the latest tragedy is raising questions, a question that many parents are asking, who you do you tell the difference between a cold and the potentially deadly flu? we mentioned that some schools are closing in florida today. at 7:00 a.m. the "today" show will be live outside of one of those schools. we will also hear advice about how to tell the difference between the cold and the flu. president trump is in davos, switzerland, praising the american economy. >> scott mcgrew joins us now, he sat down with one of our colleagues. >> cnbc ran that interview a short time ago. it was a discussion mostly about the economy and joe concern nan of cnbc gave what i have to say was a pretty friendly interview in which the president praised lawmakers for passing tax
5:17 am
reform, pointing out no one expected so many companies to use tax savings to give employees bonuses. >> at&t started, but they immediately followed, hundreds of companies are giving thousands and thousands of dollars to their workers and now you have almost 3 million workers that are receiving thousands of dollars, nobody ever thought -- that was not like in the plan. >> even starbucks. >> starbucks. yesterday disney and others. >> even starbucks. now, two things to know, that interview took place before the blockbuster "new york times" article that said trump tried to fire the special counsel and you know we're going to talk more about that later. we should mention president trump is speaking right now in davos to the public. we will bring you excerpts from that as well. that's, again, coming up in a bit. do watch shares of starbucks today, the company says sales are slowing and it thinks because people are shopping less. also tesla, another problem for tesla, more delays on its model

5:19 am
>> i have seen them before but they took it a step forward? this fellow on "press: here." a couple fraternities just striking it rich. >> you guys look a little stuffy in all your suits. get you a sideways baseball cap, mcgrew. so ready, set, hike, as in let's let the hype begin in minneapolis which is hosting the first super bowl in 26 years. events get yund under way with a ten-day festival along with the popular stretch downtown. the festival includes nightly concerts, exhibits including ice sculptures and snowmobile stunts. you can watch the super bowl right here on nbc bay area, that's february 4th. the game is supposed to kick off a little after 3:00 p.m. this may look a little like recess somewhere, but these are actually some of football's top

line players turning a kids game into a machine's sport. during the nfl skills challenge in orlando, florida, players squared off yesterday in dodgeball. it was a classic. it all came down to jarvis landry you can see in red against kicker graham gano in blue. catch by landry, gave him the win. they were excited. he is a wide receiver, so, you know, he probably should have gotten it. >> we should have some dodgeball games here. >> oh, my goodness. >> i remember those games on the playground. >> stopped being a kids game once that one kid was able to throw really hard at your face. >> no face. no face. >> take the offense to the defense. good day to be outside if you want to play dodgeball, soccer, football, any type of sports. the weather will be fantastic. not too hot, not too cold. the peninsula, look at some of that fog, 44 degrees. it's getting a little foggy out there so slow down as usual.
5:21 am
tri-valley 39 degrees. it's old in the north bay at 39 degrees right now. look at san francisco, we are seeing some low lying clouds out there with a nice little comparison of the skyline, 45 degrees. 41 in the east bay right now. so what's going on with that storm? we saw that storm system move in and that's what brought some torrential rain, hail, and, yes, scattered showers into the overnight hours and into the early morning hours which is why some of those roads are still pretty wet out there. now we have that system trekking out to the east and then just behind this we've got this system of high pressure that's going to dry us out and warm us up into the weekend. first we have to deal with older temperatures and cooler afternoon highs in the 50s. san francisco a high of 51 degrees, palo alto 55, san jose 58, oakland 53. if you are heading out to any of the hiking trails once you get over the cold morning keep on bundling up because by 10:00 a.m. we will still be at 48 degrees, by 1:00 we will see
5:22 am
more sunshine coming in and we will top out into the upper 50s at about 60 degrees for san jose. over the next seven days we do start a bit of a drying trend in the forecast. if you check out sunday, that's when we start to see a warm up in there, 59 degrees in san francisco and some 60s in inland areas. let's check in with mike, a closure. we have a closure, we just learned about this. overall the speed sensors are good but hayward a street is closed just off of 880. sounds like there was a pursuit involving chp. they will give us more information a little later on, but a street is currently closed at 880 itself. you can access the southbound side of the freeway through the area, but northbound right now limit limited. you might want to head over toward industrial. westbound highway 4 the earlier traffic break i told you about, they are laying flares out now. fog drifted through the area, it's tough to see if you are traveling over towards cummings
5:23 am
sky way off of 6el e680 you wile that flare pattern. more fog in the north bay. the bay bridge toll plaza does have that backup, it's still holding steady about the same as it was ten minutes ago so we will track it. so far no metering lights. coming up next on "today in the bay," fighting for an education. new this morning the bay area college ranked as one of the toughest to get into. but first, a dire warning from alameda police. be ware of a cookie cart. mike posted this on facebook. it's a tongue in cheek post from police about a girl scout cookie -- it's about girl scout cookie season. like his page and join the conversation. it turns out allowo

drink alcohol well, 5:26 right now. new this morning it turns out allowing teens to drink alcohol with parental supervision doesn't prevent them from drinking elsewhere. that's according to a new study out of australia. researchers say teens whose parents allowed them to drink are also more likely to get alcohol from other sources and those who got alcohol from their parents are also likely to binge drink and abuse alcohol by the age of 18. all new this morning, a bay area college one of the toughest to get into in the entire country. >> we looked through the brand-new rankings overnight.
5:27 am
niche ranking stanford for the second hardest college to get into. the site says that rankings are based on acceptance rates, sat and act scores. harvard is ranked number one, cal tech in pasadena also made the list ranking fifth. coming up next on "today in the bay," alarming new information on an epidemic that's sweeping san francisco. the stunning amount of reports filed and how many suspects have been arrested. we'll break it all down coming up in a live report. plus an explosion of snow in the sierra, what you need to know before heading out there this weekend. vianey arana also has your weekend forecast coming up.
5:28 am
5:29 am
5:30 am
a very good friday morning to you. let's take a peek outside this morning. taking a live look at the golden gate bridge. not the slick roads that we saw yesterday. hopefully that will help in the morning commute a little bit, but it is a cold start so bundle up before you head out the door. 5:30. good morning. thanks for joining us, i'm will go. >> and i'm marcus washington. right now we want to head over to vianey arana looking at the forecast today. you say we're going to dry out. >> yeah, we're going to dry out and the roads are drying out as well but now commuters will have to deal with a little fog especially in the north bay. in terms of the visibility santa rosa down to half a mile, napa down to one mile and novato really limited visibility out there, so please be careful,
5:31 am
slow it down, both hands on the wheel, turn on the fog lights if you do, if not low beams it is. oakland pretty good, san francisco also looking pretty good. as far as your temperature trend we still have a couple low clouds in the forecast and we are still in the 30s and 40s, but over the next couple of hours san francisco climbing out of those 40s, but it's going to take a while, slow to warm today. so by about 10:00 a.m. 49 degrees and then san francisco will be topping out into those 50s. not really expecting those warm temperatures. definitely very winterlike around here thanks to that cold front that swept in bringing tons of rain in the paris. i will talk about the snow totals in just a bit. we have this crash we've been tracking in hayward, that's one of the only incidents. that was the closure for a street. as we look at the speed sensors everything looks great now. the latest update is that they did reopen a street. getting more detail into the newsroom. they will have that just after my report. a street has reopened. getting over toward the bay bridge it is a nice easy drive down the east shore freeway or
5:32 am
coming up from that hayward area. the bay bridge toll plaza does show, though, that they turned on the metering lights and they have the backup, but it's a little bit lighter as is traditional on a friday. back to you, laura. >> thank you very much. just like mike mentioned, with err following that breaking news in the east bay this morning where a chp cruiser crashed into another vehicle during a chase. this is a video just into our newsroom. happened an hour ago at a street near interstate 880. we learned five minutes ago that the street has now reopened. a street has. as you can see from this video that crash was head on with impacts relative relatively low chp are saying, the injured suffered both by the driver and chp officer considered minor. chp also saying the car officers were chasing exited from 880 and the driver got away. now to a development of another crash involving a chp officer in hayward. today the man charged with driving drunk and high killing chp officer andrew camilleri is expected to enter a plea.
5:33 am
mohammed ali's arraignment is set for 8:30 this morning in dublin. the 22-year-old from hayward is facing second degree murder charges. witnesses say that he was driving at high speeds when he slammed into a parked chp suv that officer a.m. larry was inside. this happened on christmas eve on highway 880 in hayward. new this morning, an alarming new report published in the san francisco chronicle this morning. it says despite there being more than 81,000 online reports of car break-ins in san francisco there have only been 13 arrests in the past seven years. >> "today in the bay's" pete suratos is live in san francisco with a closer look at this report. good morning, pete. >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus and laura. yeah, we took a look at that report this morning, a very small percentage to say the least. i want to point out these are based off of online claims over a seven-year period, but those online claims make up a good majority of the claims when it comes to those car break-ins, roughly about 60%.
5:34 am
i was going to talk about those numbers, you mentioned one of them, 13 arrests out of the more than 81,000 online claims regarding car break-ins over a seven-year period. that's according to data from the da's office that was presented in the paper, san francisco chronicle, this morning. now, in 2017 there were more than 30,000 reported car break-ins, to car that to the number in 2011, there were fewer than 11,000 car break-ins that year. as of right now san francisco is seeing an average of 85 car break-ins per day. i will show you guys a heat map showing you some of the areas where we see a majority of those break-ins. you see them mostly in the downtown san francisco area near city hall, as well as through the mission district. now, some have pointed to the issue of prop 47 which raised the threshold for felony theft up to $950 but a recent study by the californians for safety and justice claim there has been little change in crime since that prop passed a few years ago. a bill is being considered by the state senate to close a
5:35 am
loophole that would allow prosecutors prove the defendant committed the break in by showing they broke a car window to get into the car. that state senate bill has the endorsement of the san francisco district attorney who spoke about it early this week. tod to believe that i believe that this legislation would be a silver bullet that somehow is going to end car burglaries in the city, but it's simply a tool that will give us the ability to do work this cases that we haven't been able to. >> reporter: san francisco pd told the paper that nearly 500 auto burglary arrests were made last year in san francisco in 2017 but the paper says only one of those arrests were linked to the online claims. as we reported in the past san francisco police has tried to address this issue, increasing foot patrols in some of those problem areas, but it clearly continues to be a problem for the city. live in san francisco, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> interesting report. thank you, pete. tomorrow a couple of fundraisers being held for the

5:37 am
affordable for people to live in the city where they teach. >> if we want to attract and retain top flight talent then we have to find a way to give them a place to live. >> i would love to live where i teach and be able to stay longer, to be able to offer my kids more support or be around a little bit more and right now that's just not feasible. >> that was a palo alto middle schoolteacher. the property in question is a block and a half from the california avenue cal trains station, that's near local shops and supermarkets. the supervisor says it could hold 60 to 100 homes for teachers. more details now, let's give you some perspective on just how expensive it is to live in palo alto. we researched housing and apartment prices overnight. zillow puts the average cost of a home at more than $3 million. the average price to rent a home is nearly $5500 a month. rent café puts the average rent for an apartment at $3,000 a month. if you have any money left
5:38 am
over maybe you can head to the sierra this weekend. be prepared, however, for snow and ice on the roads. this is a live look from interstate 80 right at king vale. right now there are chain controls as expected on 80. caltrans telling everyone to take your time on the slippery roads. crews are expected to work 12-hour shifts and stay until all the highways are clear and safe for drivers. got to get used to it. hopefully, right, mike? >> hopefully you are used to it, if not or even if you are you're prepared as well. again, chain control for highway 50 and i-80 heading through the sierra. over here much calmer, much easier conditions south bay all the way up the peninsula and throughout the east bay. maybe some damp roadways until that sun comes out, maybe some fog and mist but this will complicate things for highway 4> we are hearing about the third round of traffic breaks west on highway 4 towards cummings sky way. an earlier disabled vehicle in the center divide. they want to make sure traffic slows through the area because it's foggy there, as well as where you see the orange up in
5:39 am
the north bay. seen nay was talking about that. it's impeding the view for some drivers but not our view of san rafael from our camera. it certainly won't stop us from seeing the weekend. >> or celebrating it. officially friday. >> talking about it all week. >> finally, right? we are expecting much better conditions, guys, so no fear in terms of the rain, not really a big threat this weekend because that system finally made its exit off to the east. we're really tracking cooler temperatures today, but eventually we will actually start to warm up as we head in especially towards sunday and inland areas will start to see finally some 60s out there. coast 56 degrees expected for saturday, bay 59. check out inland, 61 degrees. if you notice in the icons, well, partly clear skies, but, yes, we will have another cold start tomorrow morning. just keep that in mind if you have plans to be out bright and early. we are expecting similar conditions on sunday. the reason for that is because that high pressure is going to start us off on a bit of drying
5:40 am
trend. this will be the weekend that will kick start dry conditions for the bay area. looks like we will finish off january with a dry workweek ahead. inland 53 degrees, look at all that sunshine, 62 for the bay, coast 58 degrees. lake tahoe we are still tracking more snowshowers as we head into tomorrow, so you may want to check the road conditions as always before you head up anywhere near the mountains. i will have a closer look at as far as snow totals, how much snow there is currently at the base. you will be quite impressed with how much snow they got with this last winter storm. >> they need it, too. coming up next on "today in the bay," the wild ride cause on camera, chilling new video this morning shows the moments the deadly mudslides started in santa barbara county. and in washington the biggest news yet to come out of the mueller investigation, we'll fill you in when "today in the bay" continues.
