san francisco will also be topping out into the those 50s, and for the north bay, expecting partly clear skies, as well. we have moisture far off to the north shown on radar, but it looks like the majority of the moisture is going to be staying off to the north, which will be great, because that's going to be a nice sign for us ahead as we head into today and tomorrow. a gorgeous shot of squaw creek like tahoe, because i did have a couple people message me, asking if the conditions would be favorable in terms of heading up and all of the road travel and all of that. well, it does look beautiful. and in terms of the base snow totals, looking pretty good in squaw valley. 33 inches. season total so far is at 118. heavenly at 38 inches. kirkwood, at 22 inches. so definitely great snowboarding and skiing conditions. we have seen that winter storm warning expire, which means it looks like the road conditions might be better. but as always, you have got to make sure there's no chain controls in effect, because you don't want to get caught off guard. now, as i mentioned, we have

moisture far off to the north. this is expected to climb down south any time soon. and we are expecting that low pressure system to continue tracking east. behind that, high pressure. it's going to be a great day to head out and hike. but bundle up, because we're going to be slow warming. so by 10:00 a.m., still at 52 degrees. finally at around 1:00, lots of sunshine, 63 degrees. and then once again, into the overnight hours, expect for those temperatures to start dropping into the 40s and the 30s. over the next seven days, here's what you can expect. tomorrow is going to be the beginning of our warming trend around here. we're expecting a high of 60 degrees, maybe warmer in san francisco. and then into monday and tuesday, we'll keep those upper 50s in the forecast, but check out inland areas. a high of 65, possibly even 70. especially for some interior valleys. and then if you notice in the icons, we've got no rain in sight. so that high pressure is going to start not only a bit of a warming trend, but also a drying trend around the bay area, as we head in towards the end of

january, and into the week of february. kira? >> i know, can you believe it? february, here we come. vianey, thanks. it is 7:47. still ahead on "today in the bay," a new problem with the new bay bridge. we investigate concerns of a tiny organism burrowing into the steel that supports it. but someone else might get to it

7:50 am
we need to stress, caltrans says there is no concern of the bridge failing. it's way too soon for that. but investigative reporter, jaxon van derbeken has found the eastern span may not last nearly as long as it's supposed to. >> reporter: corrosion has long beleaguered the new bay bridge, leaving broken bowls, pitted cables and lingering questions about its long-term survivability. now, yet another corrosion peril is apparently at work on this span. that's according to a new report that find key wells on the giant steel pilings holding up its iconic tower are under assault. corroding in some places 50% faster than caltrans had estimated. just why is still a mystery. but at the current rate, the steel piles that hold up the tower could corrode away too soon to hold up the bridge for 150 years, as designed. in fact, its life span could be
7:51 am
cut by 50 years. >> it's enough that if you had projected that out 150 years, you would not have what we assumed. >> reporter: that's brian maroney, caltrans' chief engineer on the project. he says engineers allowed for the nearly four-inch-thick steel piles to get three quarters of an inch of rust over the years. but, he says, a recent underwater survey of the barnicle-encrusted steel piles suggest something besides rust is eating away at the bridge's foundation. >> they also have questions about, are there very small microorganisms that are feeding on iron. and that's kind of a new thing in the bridge world. we're not used to that. >> reporter: the process is called microbiologically influenced corrosion. it turns out, the bay floor is rich with the tiny creatures that cause it. according to the assessment report, we obtained under the public records act.
7:52 am
the microbes leave pits that experts liken to holes, left by worms and termites in wood. and for now, caltrans is focusing on finding out if microbes are to blame. and whether other bay bridges could be at risk. >> it's really something new. and when there is something new to us, you know, we want to make sure we get on top of that as fast as we can. >> reporter: while maroney stresses the problem is not critical at the moment, the long-term risk cannot be ignored. >> it's important to, you know, not drop the ball here. as years go on, we have to make sure we get out and inspect it. >> reporter: the corrosion experts caltrans commission want the foundation checked again in three to five years. but not everyone agrees. lisa fulton is a berkeley-based metallurgical engineer who has studied micro logical corrosion. is this scary? >> absolutely scary, yes. >> reporter: fulton says there is no easy way to stop colonies of microbes once they strike.
7:53 am
and when they do, the damage can be far more predictable than rust. >> you've got steel structures everywhere. everywhere. so this -- this is alarming, because it's not a typical mode of corrosion in these types of structures. >> reporter: the first thing to do, she says, is cut out sections of the pitted metal to confirm what is going on. >> every weld can have -- can be undergoing the same accelerated corrosion. so the extent of the problem is not known. and it's got to be -- one has to get to the bottom of it. >> reporter: jaxon van derbeken, nbc bay area news. >> we have much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up, it's our clear the shelter segment, featuring our friends from pets in need. we'll introduce you to this little guy, next.

some special guests from pets in need, our favorite part of the newscast. executive director, al month leaka and dr. charlotte reuben is here, with blackey is his name. they are ready to give him up for his new home. you're all three not ready for your new home. he is ready for his new home. tell me about him. looks like a little chihuahua. >> little chihuahua mix. he's been with us about two months or so. he's been spade, neutered, vaccinated. ready for his forever home. >> you guys are great, because you do all of that. spade, knew neuter, vaccinate. microchip. so a free service is included in the cost of the adroppioption, is typically a very low price. he seems to be quite calm for a chihuahua. he's a little bit shaky, if you can see on camera, but i think that's just stage fright. >> probably. >> camera nerves. >> right. >> and i have to point out that
7:57 am
you included that he is vaccinated. and that's a big issue we need to talk about now. and that's why dr. reuben is with us today. this canine influenza virus. we have friends and family members suffering from the flu this season. but canine influenza virus is a really serious problem right now. >> yeah. it's similar to the human flu, and it's highly contagious, respiratory disease. wasn't in the states up until the early 2000s, and the strain that's going around now just came over in 2015. there's no natural immunity in the dog population. that's why they're so susceptible to getting sick. >> and how is it spread? >> it's spread through -- the air. it's mostly if a dog is coughing or barking or -- and it can often be spread through just like with humans, through clothing, hands and stuff.
7:58 am
>> oh, my gosh. >> yeah. >> it seems like it would be really hard to stop. how are you preventing it from spreading in your shelter? >> well, we have pretty vigorous cleaning protocols anyway, but we've just really tightened them up. we're not doing as many dog-to-dog interactions and we wait until they're fully vaccinated before we let them be social again. >> and it's really nice that you include those vaccinations. i read that you, for example, with blackey, you vaccinated him. but there's two vaccinations for the flu. so if someone adopts a dog that's only had the one vaccination, you'll give this incredibly reduced fee of just $20 for the second vaccination. other places are charging $100. >> right. >> so another good reason to adopt from pets in need. if you would like to find out more about pets in need, about blackey, about the offers you guys give, head to their website, pets in need.org. al and dr. reuben, thanks so much for joining us this morning. and thanks to you for making us a part of your morning.
