4:30.. a deadly accident blocking several lanes of highway 101 this morning in redwood city. news right now atv÷yf 4:30 on y monday morning. a deadly accident blocking several lanes of highway 101 this morning in redwood city. we have team coverage on the impact this is already having on the monday morning commute. good morning. thanks for joining us, i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. we want to get right to mike inouye for that update on that breaking news. mike? >> we have right here video of northbound 101 not too long ago, we see the impact and the debris left over. that was a motorcycle, i believe, the one involved in a deadly crash that closed 101 northbound for a period of time. investigation continues there. you see some of that here. we will show you the map, what the effect is. whipple avenue a bit to the north of the crash here now has two lanes open, three lanes are

closed, the coroner is on scene conducting the investigation. i expect it to reopen probably in the next 15 minutes. there is slowdown from woodside up to the scene. you can take woodside over to veterans boulevard which will take you right back up to whipple and get you past that scene. that is north of willow. willow is down here, whipple where the crash is up there. the rest of the bay is moving relatively well. we will continue to follow that deadly crash. i know kris sanchez is headed out to there to see if there is any more information to gather. now to a developing story in the east bay, the search continues this morning for a driver who ran over a richmond police officer. that officer was trying to stop this sideshow. it happened early sunday morning. this is instagram video of that sideshow. that officer was hurt, but is expected to be okay. >> "today in the bay's" sergio quintana has the latest on the investigation for us this morning. >> reporter: this is instagram

video of the sideshow in richmond, neighbors tell us it was a noisy and dangerous event. >> never hear anything so close to the police department. it really kind of gave us a sense of security that this wouldn't happen, but unfortunately it looks like it does. >> you could hear the noise, it was just crazy. >> reporter: since the sideshow was so close to police headquarters officers got there quickly, one of the patrolmen was injured as he was trying to wave the drivers to stop. >> it's pretty brazen to run over a police officer that's trying to keep peace in this bedroom community. >> reporter: investigators are still looking for that driver, he is facing serious charges for injuring a policeman. in oakland california highway patrolmen were put in danger at a different sideshow when one shined a laser at the chp's helicopter. >> that sideshow involved 200 vehicles, multiple people outside the vehicles, fireworks being shot in the air, multiple reports of gunfire. >> california highway patrolman

sean boyaha says they were able to track the person and officers on ground arrested him. he is now facing multiple felony charges including potential federal violations for shining a laser at an aircraft. sergio quintana, "today in the bay." the richmond officer is still in the hospital. he suffered several broken bones, cuts and a road rash. the chp says that there were a total of four sideshows in the east bay on saturday. we're going to stay on top of this story throughout the morning. our pete suratos will bring us a live report coming up in an hour. happening today the man charged with driving a stoolen truck and causing a crash that killed two little antioch girls will be back in court. 23-year-old noe saucedo is charged with two counts of murder. he will appear before a judge this afternoon. this is video from his first court appearance last week. saucedo was being chased by sheriff's deputies department of the crash earlier this month. sisters lenexy and camila cardoza were in the truck

saucedo struck but they did not survive. classes at san jose state are supposed to go on as planned today. this is after a water main break yesterday that sent water gushing across the campus. the crews say a pipe broke near two residence halls, this is sending a cascade of water on to the area around san carlos and 9th street. it took more than three hours to shut off that water. at one point campus police had to stop students from crossing through the water. >> definitely did not expect to come back to this. i wasn't here when it blew, but it's a mess. >> crews are supposed to work at least throughout the morning. now, the school says the demand is relatively minor and that the problem is going to be one that they are going to have to continue to fix and it is impacting water service. meantime, in the east bay another water main break caused this destruction in hayward including a sinkhole. that main burst yesterday

morning sending water and mud down highland near mission boulevard. firefighters put up sandbags in front of those homes to prevent possible floods. the two cars had to be removed from the sinkhole. strong winds are whipping through southern california today again, that is coupled with winter heat wave and temperatures that have been in the 80s, almost feels like summer, but that means that fire danger is very high. this is looking at video from the wind fueled thomas fire from last month. the largest in state history. red flag warnings are in effect today for the mountains and foothills from los angeles to san diego. yesterday nearly 80 mile per hour winds were recorded in the hills of ventura county. here at home we're experiencing a dry patch of weather. in fact, let's take a look at our satellite radar right now. not a whole lot going on, seeing it up in the seattle/portland area, but meteorologist kari hall is tracking just how long this is going to take. finally, kari, might get a

chance to get that car washed. we've been waiting for a while because we had so much rain last week. >> we had so much rain last week. we do still need the rain because we are not caught up to normal but we will see all of that wet weather that you're seeing to the north staying there as we go into the next several days. fog our issue for the north bay as you get ready to head out the door and it will be a dry day despite the clouds. right now our temperatures are fairly chilly. we will talk more about what to expect as our temperatures today reach into the mid 60s. we will be up to 66 degrees in san jose and look at how warm it will be for the end of january. we know that it's not supposed to be that warm. that's what we will see throughout the week. so i will talk more about that coming up in just a few minutes. >> look at that, 71 in santa cruz. >> yes. >> beach time. >> okay. >> thanks a lot. coming up on "today in the bay," is the trump administration looking to get into the wireless business? two news outlets suggest there is plans to make this a reality. stopping by starbucks this morning? we will tell you what the coffee

out this week including the key monthly jobs report this friday. it is also the busiest week of earnings season with companies such as facebook, amazon and mcdonald's reporting results. on friday the dow rose 223 points to 26,616, the nasdaq adding 94 to 7,505. a new survey finds sales and profits picked up for u.s. companies at the end of last year, more firms say they're paying their workers higher wanls and salaries in the latest signs that the u.s. economy is improving. businesses are also saying that finding skilled workers is the most difficult it's been in nearly a decade. >> and the trump administration is considering a takeover of parts of the country's wireless broadband network, documents seen by reuters show that national security officials suggest the u.s. needs to centralize its nextgen 5 g network to prevent china from spying on our phones. telecom companies currently build their new networks.

so you can see the moon there. as we go through the week we've got a lot of things to talk about here because we are in a midwinter dry spell. we see these happening where you get a couple of weeks of some very dry weather, but it's also going to be unusually warm. for so you were california there will be a high fire danger as we all near some record high temperatures and then that lunar eclipse on the way for the middle of the week. as you get ready to head out the door now, grab a nice warm jacket, temperatures are in the lower 40s for the north bay and upper 40s for san jose and palo alto. here is a look at our high temperatures today, it's going to be a really nice one with some mid 60s today for san jose, also 65 in oakland, 64 in san francisco and some mid 60s for the north bay. how do you dress for this? it starts out so chilly. you do need a hat and nice warm jacket. later on today it's all about the shirt sleeves and something light to help you out with those temperatures that will be

changing drastically throughout the day. we are watching some rain, this looks really busy, but this area of low pressure is detached from this system that's going to continue to keep that rain across the pacific northwest and away from the bay area. let's talk about what's going to be a really rare event. why? because it's a blue blood moon, it's also a super moon and it's going to be an eclipse. so that eclipse here happens at 7:11 on wednesday morning, right before sunrise, but the total eclipse, that will be going on for about an hour and a half from 4:51 to 6:07 in the morning. so a lot to watch for. hopefully our skies stay clear, we don't have any fog. our temperatures, look at this, it's going to be in the upper 60s. in san francisco by the end of the week. and a lot of sunshine. i wouldn't be surprised to see a lot more 70s for those inland areas as we head towards thursday and friday. still going to be warm this weekend, but not a drop of rain

in this forecast.s-v we will continue to watch and see if there is going to be any storm systems developing over the next few days. mike, you are still tracking a serious crash on the peninsula. 101. the rest of the bay is very light traffic flow. these crashes up in diablo are out of the roadway, but there is one incident i continue to track on the southbound side. over here northbound 101 is the serious crash approaching whipple, the overnight crash involving first just a motorcycle, that sounds like that was a driver that was killed as a result. another four or five vehicles stopped there and perhaps got stuck in the debris as well. we only have the right lane open or perhaps the right two lanes. chp says 5:00 they are hoping to have it open in the next five minutes. kris sanchez is on scene gathering us new details. you can stay on veterans or el camino up to whipple. everything is all right up to woodside and then the slowing and activity for that crash and investigation.

now, there is another crash getting into san francisco just off of the skyway at southbound 101 just off of i-80 but looks like everything is clearing to the shoulder there as well. no slowing on the sensors for the bay bridge. across the bay a nice beautiful view of the city and these sparkling lights heading into the city. doesn't look like there is any problem on the approach to the skyway, either. the big deal is over on the peninsula, i will track 101. it is 4:50 right now. happening today a new state bill is being introduced to protect nursing mothers at work. current law gives mother time for lactation unless it seriously disrupts work. employers need to provide a room, if not they could face a $100 penalty. the new bill would require access to a sink and refrigerator. employees can apply for exemption from now allowing lactation breaks. the county has applied for a grant to study a plan to speed

up bus service. transportation officials are looking at letting buses drive on shoulders of highway 101. buses have to make pickups on the right side, then cross all lanes of traffic to get back into the carpool lane on the left. in contra costa county a new place opening up for kids in foster care to visit with your loved ones. it's not just a visitation center. it will provide family focused treatment services. 1,100 children go through the system and on average many spend a year and a half in that system. overnight we investigated the numbers from all bay area counties. according to kids data.org. in solano county kids stay in foster care for more than 19 months, san mateo is the lowest with ten months. at 4:51 this morning, did you catch it last night, certainly a big night for the music industry. grammys were handed out to the best and brightest. >> and that measure there's no stopping kendrick lamarre, he

several lanes right now on highway 101 in redwood city. we have team coverage to help you get out the door. good morning to you, hope you had a good weekend. thank you for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. we want to get straight to mike inouye for the impact and the latest that we are having on this morning's commute. how long is it going to take to clean all of this up? >> chp was hoping to have lanes reopened at 5:00. overall we are looking at smooth sensors as we would expect at this time, but highway 101 was completely closed for a period of time, we have a couple lanes open, last i heard from chap and that's the reason for the slowing as you approach woodside and get up towards whipple. you can get off the free what i had over toward el camino and jump back on at whipple north of the crash. right by the crash scene with the latest is kris sanchez. i know that lanes were closed as of a few seconds ago. >> reporter: hi hi there, mike. we were stuck in that jam up leading up to whipple. what you can see here to my left is that the lanes are coming down to just one
