it's 7:01 right now. by his standard, we're out of here. >> all right. we're going to get right to our top story. that deepening rift between president trump and the fbi over the potential release of a classified memo tied to the russia investigation. republicans claim it shows misconduct by the bureau, but democrats and the head of the fbi are questioning its accuracy. nbc's kristen welker is at the white house. kristin, good morning. >> hi, hoda. good morning to you. the president is in an all-out showdown with the phish. and it's all about whether that memo should be released. republicans argue the document shows the fbi just went too far in ordering surveillance on a former trump campaign official. but the fbi is urging the white house not to release the memo, citing grave concerns. democrats are crying foul. they're trying to block its release. but all sides suggest the president's mind may be made up. >> this morning, building toward a potential bombshell, that controversial republican memo will likely be released as early

as today. the document purportedly alleges there was misconduct in ordering surveillance and an anti-trump bias within the fbi and just department. the president ignoring shouted questions about the matter weapons. >> mr. president, any response to the fbi saying in that statement that the nunes memo should not be released? >> the fbi launching a rare campaign to prevent the classified documents release. on monday, director christopher wray and deputy attorney general rod rosenstein went to the white house to ask the president's chief of staff not to make the memo public. two sources familiar with the matter tell nbc news. then wednesday, the fbi releasing an extraordinary public statement, warning of grave concerns about facts left out that fundamentally impact the memo's accuracy. the statement coming on the heels of president trump indicating he's all but decided. >> don't worry. 100%. >> can you imagine? >> white house chief of staff john kelly echoing his body

boss. >> it will be released pretty quick and the whole world can see it. >> adding fuel to all of it, house intelligence committee chairman, devin nunes, attacking the fbi and doj accusing the agencies of having stonewalled congress's demands for information for nearly a year. but a new wrinkle from the ranking democrat on the committee, adam schiff, sending a letter to nunes, suggesting the memo sent to the white house for review had been materially altered from the one the committee agreed to release. nunes calling the changes cosmetic. and the accusation an attempt to stop the memo's release. overnight, democrats fuming that the republican-led committee voted mott to include the democratic response to the memo. and another headwind for the white house this morning, cnn reporting that back in december during a meeting with deputy attorney general rod rosenstein, president trump wanted to know where the special counsel's russia investigation was heading and wanted to know if rosenstein was on my team. the white house not responding

to multiple requests for comment during a hearing on capitol hill just after his meeting with the president, rosenstein was pressed on the appropriateness of a loyalty pledge. >> is it ever appropriate for the president of the united states to demand a department of justice official or fbi director take a loyalty pledge? >> i don't have an opinion about that, congressman. nobody has asked me to take a loyalty pledge, other than the oath of office. >> and this morning, one of the president's closest advisers, hope hicks, is on defense after the "new york times" reported overnight that one of the president's former attorneys, mike corallo, is planning to tell special counsel robert mueller that hicks said potentially damaging e-mails involving donald trump jr. will, quote, never get out. hicks' attorney blasting the report, saying she never said that and calling the very idea completely false. hoda and savannah. >> kristen, thanks.

this morning, there are new developments into the investigation of that deadly crash between a garbage truck and a train carrying republican members of congress. nbc's tom costello is at the scene in virginia. tom, good morning. what is the latest there? >> savannah, good morning. just a reminder, this train was carrying members of congress to the greenbrier resort in west virginia. this morning, this is an accident investigation, not criminal. the ntsb is on the scene. federal railroad investigators on the scene trying to figure out how this garbage truck, which was totally ripped apart, as you can see behind me, how it ended up at the wrong place at the wrong time. it happened in one lightning fast horrific moment. >> mass casualty incident, level one, train versus truck. >> a chattered amtrak train carrying republican members of congress, their staff and families to a retreat in west virginia, slicing through a garbage truck on the tracks just west of charlottesville, virginia. >> we were having a regular train ride and all of a sudden we felt a strong jolt, a really

loud sound. we noticed some of our colleagues who w loud sound. we noticed some of our colleagues who were standing fell to the floor. >> north dakota congressman kevin cramer was doing a live radio interview from the train. >> i'm looking at the garbage truck. the back end has been separated from the cab. and the garbage is all over the ditch. yeah, i don't know whether everyone's okay. >> immediately, several lawmakers who were also medical doctors began rendering assistance to the people from the truck. >> did cpr for several minutes. i'm mott sure whether that's -- how long, maybe five or ten minutes and within moments, the ems showed up. >> that victim, 28-year-old christopher foley, died at the scene. another person aboard the truck in critical condition. >> everyone knew what they should be doing and took a rooi role in trying to save life from cpr with one gentleman to maintaining bleeding and controlling airways. >> witnesses say the railroad crossing signals were working and the crossing gates were

down. unfortunately, train vehicle collisions happen almost every week in america. in 2016, 260 people were killed, 842 injured. and at 55 miles per hour, it can take a train half a mile or more to stop. former federal railroad administrator sayra fineburg me us in manassas, virginia. >> anyone can make this mistake. anyone can be unfamiliar with where they are or the fact they're approach ago crossing. >> in 2015, a train crashed into an suv stuck on the tracks between gates. 6 people died, 15 injured. >> railroad advocates have encouraged gates to be installed. the question this morning, how did this trash truck end up on the path of a speeding amtrak train.

>> congressman jason lewis was treated at a nearby hospital and released. sometimes it's suggested these gates malfunction, but we don't know if that was happening yesterday. >> what do investigators do? how do they begin to piece this had together? >> well, they will probably be looking at the cameras on board the train, outward facing cameras. also, they have inward facing cameras looking at the engineer. they will determine how fast the train wag moving and probably get a bird's-eye view of exactly what was happening on the train on the tracks. but at the moment, there's nothing to suggest this train and the engineer did anything improper. the question is why that trash was was right there at the crossing guard. >> awful. tom, thank you very much. keep us posted. we have a lot more to get to, including the flu epidemic as the death toll climbs higher this morning. new concerns are being raised about tamiflu,ed in used to treat the virus. gabe is in charleston, west

but in rare cases, apparent side effects have been reported. >> researching where children had been delusional having, you know, hallucinations, they weren't in their right mind. >> a family in indiana fearing side effects of tamiflu may have led to the apparent suicide of 16-year-old charlie harp. his legal guardian speak to go wthr saying he was a happy kid until he got the flu. >> i start seeing these articles of all these children who have been harmed and if it's that big of an issue, why are we still prescribing it and giving it to our children? >> the company that makes tamiflu released a statement saying it couldn't comment on the specific case, but neuropsychiatric at rick events have been report in patients with finfluenza. >> no light behind her eyes.

>> winny duffy was terrified when her 5-year-old daughter had what she called seizure-like symptoms and hallucinations after taking tamiflu. >> i've never been panicked like that in my life. >> worries heightened by concerned people on social media urging caution. >> they've read stuff on social media don't give your child tamiflu because there are risks of, and very rare risks of seizures, confusion and perhaps even more complicated neurologic symptoms. but those are exceedingly rare. >> the cdc says the best candidates for anti-viral medication are the very young, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems. the company that manufactures tamiflu says the apartment side effects have been experienced by flu patients who haven't taken the drug, writing in had part, patients should be closely monitored for behavioral changes and the benefits and risks of treatment with tamiflu should be carefully evacuated for each patient. to date, there is no link.

in michigan. >> we were wrong in 2004. we were deceived by nassar. >> a deception gymnast breann randall gay says led to even more abuse at the hands of dr. larry nassar even though she filed a police report against him in 2004 when she was 17. >> i did everything i could to make sure that this didn't happen to anybody else. but i still felt guilty. >> the police report obtained by nbc news says nassar massaged her back and her crotch for about 20 minutes while rubbing her neck web reached under her gown and placed his hand on her bare breasts. police investigated and accepted nassar's claims that what he did was medically appropriate. >> the police questioned you and you had the audacity to tell them i had misunderstood this treatment because i was not comfortable with my body. how dare you.

sadly, they took your word instead of mine. >> according to victim impact statements given the in court, randall gay's complaint is one of at least eight times nassar could have been stopped over the years. >> larry nassar is evil. >> on wednesday with, another wave of women confronting nassar. 30 women and girls making statements about his alleged abuse. nassar was her doctor for five years when she was a teenage gymnast. >> i can tell you about the treatments, about how they made my skin crawl, how i rejected my intuitioning anyway because every adult and authority figure around me assured me that this -- the that he was the only option. >> nassar has pleaded guilty to abusing three girls at twistars gymnastics in the lansing area. last week, nassar was sentenced to between 40 and 175 years in prison for molesting seven girls, some at his michigan state university office. michigan state plunging dooep

our breaking news: here )s live look from nbc ba good morning. it is 7:26. i'm kris sanchez. we're following that breaking news on the b.a.r.t. tracks. we have sky ranger over the scene near the b.a.r.t. station. that vehicle you see being towed is the vehicle that derailed causing a problem around 4:00 in the morning that has now lasted through most of the morning commute. in the past few minutes we watched it move down the tracks as crews try to leave it. this is what happened earlier this morning, from a different scene closer to where the damage happened on the rail because of that maintenance vehicle derailing. we expect the trains may be single tracking through 8:00 this morning. mike inouye is tracking that for

"the passion of the christ" was released more than a decade ago on a $30 million budget. the film, spoken entirely in the ancient language of old arabic, depicts the crucifixion of

jesus. it earned more than $600 million and remains one of the highest grossing films in history. now after more than a decade, mel gibson is set to direct a passion sequel. actor jim kazivel saying it's going to be the biggest film in history. the news comes as gibson is attempting a comeback of his own, after that now infamous dui in 2006 when gibson went on an anti-sem mettic tirade forcing him off of hollywood's a-list. he issued an apology describing his actions as a moment of insanity and a public humiliation on a global scale. that incident was followed by domestic violence charges in 2011 that were dropped after a plea deal. despite the scandals, gibson still has two of the top three highest grossing faith-based films of all time, including "hacksaw ridge" which earned him

facebook this morning? for a growing number of people, the answer could be no. the social media giant says for the first time ever, the number of people using the site is down. nbc's blake mccoy has more on all that. hey, blake, good morning. >> hoda, good morning to you. facebook is actually spinning this as a good thing, saying they have been cracking down on click bait, returning the site to its roots of connecting family and friends so even if you end up spending less time on the site, facebook says they want it to be time well spent. viral videos, ads, and so much politics. for some, it amounts to facebook overload. this morning for the first time ever, facebook has announced a drop in the number of daily users, down 700,000 in the u.s. and canada. not a big drop with 184 million north american users, but it could signal a troubling trend. it comes as facebook battles headlines that it was used by russia to manipulate the presidential election, and

facebook ceo mark zuckerberg has openly talked about social media's impact on mental health. he did so again in an earnings call wednesday. >> when we use social media to connect with people, that correlates with long-term measures of well being that you'd expect, like happiness and health. but passively watching videos or reading articles may not have those same effects. >> that's why the company has begun tweaking what content you see in your news feed. more posts from family and friends, fewer viral videos and articles. the result, the time spent on facebook is down 5%. users collectively spending 50 million fewer hours each day, less time but higher quality, says zuckerberg. >> by focusing on meaningful interaction, i expect the time we all spend on facebook will be more valuable. >> brad frost has tried to pull back from the site. >> it just became overwhelming and overkill. more stuff that wasn't related to anything that i was genuinely

exactly. let's take a look at this cold front that's moving through the northeast and back through the midwest. there's a little bit of moisture with it but not much. you might see a few flakes falling through central new england. we also have some rain falling back through pittsburgh and eastern ohio. so there's not much to it, but it is still going to move through and also going to drop temperatures. as we go through the day, we'll see some light to moderate snow through the appalachians and then see the whole cold front move away on friday. with it comes a little rain and snow. the winds will pick up on the back side of it and temperatures will start to drop heading into the weekend. snowfall accumulation, again, all the way through new england, maybe about 1, maybe an inch and a half and down through the we have a lot of sunshine across the bay area and a cool start, but look at how warm it will be later on today. we'll see high temperature in napa and concord up to 73 degrees and 70 in livermore. san jose a high of 72 degrees.

in fact it came at a time when america needed a lift and everybody was able to focus on the moon and say we can do the big stuff. and i think it was one of the big moments in my life. >> this is tom brokaw. >> i'm tom brokaw. >> i'm tom brokaw, nbc news. >> wow. >> great fun. let me clear up one thing. i went to iowa and i had high expectations, they had high expectations for me, but after a year of very undistinguished scholarship, i went back to south dakota and then dropped out again for a while and meredith brokaw came alalong an rescued me and straighten meade out. iowa always kept in touch with me. i was on the floor of one of the conventions and this very familiar-looking man came over to me, he had been one of my political science professors. he said mr. brokaw, i have so admired your reporting and someone told me you might have been in one of my classes.

he said i went back and looked up your record. i have a question, was it my fault or yours? it was all mine. >> as president reagan said, it worked out for you. >> it worked out pretty well for both of us, right. >> it's impossible to rnsanswer but is there one story that stands out? >> there's quite a collection. the civil rights movement i was in the south. in 1968 we lost dr. king and bobby kennedy, johnson stepped down. 15,000 people died in vietnam that year, americans of ours, so i've always thought about that. and then that rush of extraordinary change where the soviet union collapsed, china reinvented itself, and then finally 9/11. those are the big, big markers i think in my career that i'll always remember. >> tom, what was it like to see your whole career laid out like that? that must have been amazing, fascinating for you. >> well, especially because i have this kind of quirky memory. i remember everything from my young days in south dakota. i have a lot of ambition, a real working class family. i wanted to see the world on

somebody else's nickel. then i realized i kind of overwished because i saw the world in ways i never could have anticipated. and it's very gratifying. the nice thing is that the university of iowa and greg perkman, one of the archivists there, said this will be really important for students to go back and understand what happened with history and learn from that as well. and i think with all due respect to craig, i think it's all good for the next generation of reporters to see that. >> for me growing up, i watched three guys. bernard shaw, bryant gumbel, and tom brokaw. and it was just a tremendous honor to see not just your life in front of me, but to see the history of this great country. thank you so much for the invitation. >> it was great having you out there. >> it was awesome. >> you are the national treasure. >> no, no, come on. don't check with my family. >> you should hear the stories, by the way. i'm sure you've heard. >> thanks so much. really, really cool.

here. >> tom. >> he's your cousin. >> yes. >> and he says you can grill up a storm. and you're good too. what are we going to make, guys? >> we're going to start with tri-tip sandwich and then detroit-style pizza. >> we're going to do this first. >> the tri-tips are something we eat a lot of t. it's sirloin, same part of the cow but a different cut. i go to the butcher and ask for it. >> you've got a little rubs. a little homemade rub? >> homemade rub. this is typical rub. >> is it coffee? >> that's coffee. we also have cinnamon, so it's a beautiful mixture. kind of your typical rub. get this really good and put this on. >> what is the coffee? does the meat taste like coffee? >> it doesn't taste like coffee, it gives it a smoky, bitter flavor but it crisps the outside of this baby. i would let it sit at least two hours. overnight is perfect. so then we've got our rub here and we can go to the grill and i can show you guys the spot here.

so what i like to do is a quick high heat sear. this is what you want id t to lk like. put the tri-tip right on the hottest part of the grill, five, six minutes a side and then put it on indirect heat and let it go. >> for how long? what is the internal temp? >> 130. >> slice it up and make your sandwich. >> slice it up, bring it over here. we've got some sliced meat over here. this is what it looks like. we got a little bit of this. you know this. this is horseradish cream sauce. so buttermilk, sour cream, mayo, lemon zest, the horseradish here, worcestershire. >> this is big boy style right here. savannah, take it away. >> over here mark and i, we're going to make pizza. how are we doing this? >> we're doing detroit-style deep dish pizza but on a grill. so detroit style pizza is two things, one, wisconsin brick

cheddar cheese and this detroit-style pan. you can get it online or do it in a lasagna pan. >> got our dough. >> no rollers needed. drop it in, coat it in olive oil, just push it out with your pirn fingers. now, you need to cook the dough a little bit so we'll drop this on the grill. >> i didn't know you could make pizza on the grill but i'm not known for my cooking skills. >> close the lid, let it cook three or four minutes and then -- >> okay. >> now for the fun stuff. >> that looks good. we've got a little sauce. make your own or do store bought? >> we do a real simple uncooked sauce. typically a detroit-style pizza would be sauce on top but we find this to be a little easier. one of the other keys for detroit-style pizza is you've got to get all the way to the edge because where the cheese hits the side of the pan it crisps up. >> throw on all this meat? >> exactly. >> we're almost out of time. how long do you put it on the grill when it's done? >> seven to eight minutes until the cheese is bubbly and crispy and delicious.
