>> should be a good one. quickly approaching 6:00. breaking overnight a fire ripping through a san jose neighborhood close to one of the city's most iconic landmarks. we're live with the damage left behind this morning. plus immigration sweep in the bay area. the crackdown this morning from i.c.e. agents as the battle over immigration heats up. and countdown to the super bowl, a new exclusive behind the scenes look at what it takes to get the big game on to your television. find out what justin timberlake is just revealing about his halftime show performance as well. look at san francisco right now, nice and clear, no fog in sight, we are not worried about the fog, not worried about cloud cover. the temperatures all across, in san jose 49 right now, san francisco 53, santa rosa 45. in terms of coastal fog not really a big issue. we are a little warmer in santa rosa, napa 5 degrees cooler and the temperatures trend does show a quick climb into those 60s by midmorning and, yes, those 70s. i will talk more about that in just a bit, but first mike is tracking a crash in livermore. i'm not worried about it and i am tracking it. no worries right now. san jose a little slowing tracking a build for hayward as well. over here through the livermore valley out of the altamonte things are moving smoothly. right after livermore avenue we do have a crash that was there. looks like everything is off to the shoulder but i still see some slowing there. there must be something, a couple vehicles to cause that distraction. a smoother right through the

dublin interchange, 680 moves nicely into sunol with no problems. a nice easy drive over toward the bay bridge from the upper east shore freeway. earlier crash caused some slowing, but that's completely recovered. 23 minutes from highway 4 to the backup at the bay bridge metering lights. back to you. we are following breaking news on this friday morning. san francisco fire crews working to figure out what started a fire that burned two homes overnight. the flames broke out about 3:00 in the morning on fulton street right by alamo square in the painted ladies. firefighters say a three-story victorian home went up in flames, it was under construction. the flames spread to the house next door forcing a family out of that home. luckily there were no injuries. no word on a cause, however. our pete suratos is at the queen gathering new details for us, we will check in with him again at 6:30. developing this morning, i.c.e. agents targeting the bay area. >> this morning we are learning about another immigration sweep, this time in san jose, san

francisco and sacramento. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez.joins us live in san jose this morning to explain what i.c.e. agents are doing. good morning, kris. >> reporter: had i there. some folks may not go to work today for fear that this paper audit as the i.c.e. agency explains that it is could result in deportations. we know that dozens of businesses in san jose, san francisco, sacramento got notices that the feds will inspect their hiring records to make sure that all of their employees are legal to work in this country. employees fear that that could lead to deportation for them. nbc bay area and telemundo 48 are partners, we have witnessed prior sweeps or raids and can tell from you that experience that some workers just stop showing up at work out of that fear of getting swept up. according to i.c.e. similar raids in all of 2017 resulted in more than 300 arrests. fewer than half of them criminal. but more than $100 million in fines and restitution from

companies. we asked i.c.e. to explain how these homeland security investigations work and we're told that on monday, tuesday and wednesday of this week notices of inspection were sent to 77 bay area businesses, mainly in san francisco and san jose. i.c.e. says this is an audit of hiring records, also known as an i-9 audit. employers have three days to provide records. the i.c.e. deputy director has said that audits or sweeps like these are really intended to protect the american worker to make sure that they are getting the jobs that are available to them, however, a lot of immigration activists say that these sorts of raids can lead to separation of family. in san jose kris sanchez, "today in the bay." and at 6:04, happening today, president trump is expected to give republican lawmakers the go ahead to release a classified memo about the russia investigation. this comes even though the fbi is warning against it. that memo allegedly describes

how the fbi used information democrats paid for to get the approval to eavesdrop on the trump campaign aide. the fbi says it is inaccurate and misleading. democrats claim it's designed to discredit the russia investigation. california representative and house intelligent chair devin nunez wrote much of that memo. now democrats are calling on had i'm to step down. >> our investigation would not be credible or productive as long as chairman nunez is at the helm. >> now, a white house official tells nbc the memo will likely be approved for release with none of the reactions requested by the fbi. >> after weeks of debate this morning we're finding out which three san jose elementary schools are scheduled to shut their doors at the end of the school year. leaders at oak grove school district say declining enrollment has forced the closures. this week the board will vote to goes del roble, glider and miner

elementary schools. students will be sent to other campuses with the redrawing of boundaries still to be determined. super bowl weekend has finally arrived but the hype and anticipation are much more than just a game. the halftime show alone draws fans of its own. >> "today in the bay's" wendy which will folk live in downtown minneapolis with a look at what it takes to put this whole thing together. >> reporter: good morning, again, laura and marcus. when you walk into the super bowl experience you get a real taste of all things football. i even got a real game ball by wilson that you can buy here and you can have whatever you want put on it, the nbc logo, the super bowl lii logo, but really what i need are some lessons on what to do with this huge ball because i don't think i could throw it further than maybe the light in front of me. we will work on that a little bit later.

in the meantime you get here and you realize this is so much more than just a football game, it's a full on show. >> nothing rivals this outside of an olympics. >> reporter: but this is one game on one field with more than 100 million people watching. >> people say is there a lot of stress. yeah, there's a lot of stress during the super bowl but if you are in tv what else would you rather be doing on sunday. >> reporter: super bowl sunday can only happen after countless hours of manpower by nbc sports crews that no one will ever see. >> by the time game day comes around we're ready. we're ready to go. we're like the teams, we've practiced, she hersed multiple times. >> reporter: also rehearsing eight to ten hours a day halftime head liner justin timberlake. >> without giving too much away, we're doing a few things with this half time show that they've never quite done before. >> reporter: but he won't say if a special guest might join him

by 2:00 palo alto will be at 72 degrees and in san francisco the temperature then looking pretty good. by 10:00, upper 50s, and by 11:00 a.m. already at the 60 degree mark. san francisco is expected to hit the 70s today. santa clara your temperature trend will be even warmer. by 1:00, 69 degrees and by 2:00, 72. santa clara is expected to top out at about 76 degrees. so we will be nearing record temperatures for today. we are definitely going to have a sunny day ahead. let's get a quick check of traffic with mike. we are over here toward the rest of the traffic marching smoothly throughout the bay area without any major delays. the slowing for west 580 looks like it has smoothed out and so did the slowing through sunol. a little build for hayward and across the san mateo bridge talk about that in just a second. looking at slowing for west

good morning. it is 6:14. a quick check of your tahoe report for squaw valley and alpine meadows. no snow is expected this weekend. in fact, it's going to be fairly warm for the mountains, 55 degrees at the base, still seeing about 60 inches, season total 118. 32 lifts with open and trails 80 for squaw valley but you need to head up now because a lot of snow is probably going to be melting off with all of the arm weather we are tracking ahead. i will have a closer look at that coming up in a bit. and traffic volume coming up, speeds going down. westbound theczj towards the peninsula, the san mateo bridge takes about 15 minutes right now but the toll plaza is looking okay for this

one. the backup at the bay bridge we will talk about more coming up. new this morning a new state report says nearly every city and county in california is failing to meet housing goals. only 13 are on track to meet guidelines including foster city and hillsborough and napa and sonoma counties. we looked through some of the numbers in the report overnight for you. the state's housing department says over 97% of cities are failing to approve new housing to keep up with some of the population growth. cities are supposed to develop a certain number of market rate housing and affordable housing. communities that failed on both will now lose the ability to reject certain types of development projects and that includes menlo park, richmond, santa rosa, alameda and san mateo counties. cities like oakland, berkeley, fremont, walnut creek and san jose they met their market rate housing goals but didn't issue enough permits for affordable housing. more good news about the economy this morning. >> scott mcgrew joins us now, the latest job numbers very

strong. >> 200,000 jobs added in january adding to the longest string of monthly job gains in all of american history. right now the unemployment rate we also saw good news about worker wages, they are up. it's really been a mystery over the past few years why they've been so slow to rise given these low unemployment numbers. a rare story of layoffs for you, pandora, the music service, says it laid off 5% of its workers and will move a significant number of employees out of oakland and to atlanta because the bay area is no longer affordable. they will take the midnight train to georgia. futures the best that traders make on the open are brutal. the dow could see a 200 point on the open, worries about bond interest rates. as long as we are talking about workers this morning, amazon has filed a patent for a special bracelet to put on its workers, the idea is the bracelet would

give feez back, a buzz or vibration to help the workers hand to the right place when searching the warehouse for a particular product. amazon was awarded the patent by the patent office this week, doesn't mean they will use t but they did invent it. the idea is you're reaching up for one of the buckets, no, not that one, it's that one over there. so that be would pretty cool. >> very cool. we are on facebook live right now. we didn't have anywhere to put the camera to i have this right now. you be in charge of this right now. 6:17. super bowl is coming up on sunday and it turns out most americans will spend about $81 on the big game. that's according to the national retail federation. across the country people are expected to spend more than $15 billion on food, drinks, team apparel, tvs and decorations, that is up almost 10% from last year. millennials are expected to send the most at an average of $118. >> sounds about right. >> four out of five people who

will watch the game say they plan to spend on snacks and drinks. i guess if you're getting the team wear to support your team. >> and i would imagine -- you don't know. >> you always want to be prepared. >> marcus is trying to be a millenni millennial. he's like look at me, i'm young. >> i'm not. >> a lot of people looking forward to the weekend, though. >> definitely going to be a great sunny weekend ahead. i wouldn't spend that much. hamilton right now we're seeing a nice beautiful lights out there, not a lot of cloud cover, nice and clear, we haven't seen any fog, fog has not been a jt commute, either, and look at the peninsula, 50 degrees right now, 45 degrees for the tri-valley, south bay 49 and san francisco nice and warm at 53 degrees. the north bay is the only chilly one at about 45 and look at your microclimate highs for today, another day of near record highs is expected, san jose a high of

76, milpitas 76 and down near the east bay we are tracking low to upper 70s, in oakland 72 degrees, hayward 73 and along the peninsula you might get a couple high clouds into the afternoon, but eventually that will clear out. in san mateo topping out at 72, san francisco also expecting to hit the 70s into the afternoon, possibly even 74, 75 degrees for the embarcadero. north bay, santa rosa, a high of 75, novato 73, so let's talk about what's been keeping us so dry and warm the past couple days. we have some high pressure, it's a strong ridge of high pressure that's been sitting over the bay area and if i fast forward this timeline you can see no rain in sight and even all the way through february 9th for the long range outlook, we are not expecting any rain. what's going to happen is we will continue with the warm temperatures and then unfortunately that rain and snow deficit is only going to get worse within the next couple days. as of right now we're even seeing that trend through

february 15th. so this could possibly be two weeks or longer as of now, we will have no rain in sight. 70 degrees for super bowl sunday right here on nbc bay area. as we head into monday and tuesday for san francisco and inland spots we will keep a lot of the 70s on the radar and in the forecast. if you look at tuesday, wednesday and thursday, just a lot of sunshine. is it as sunny on the roads in terms of accidents? we have a sunny disposition for folks, that sunrise really hasn't been an issue because it's not there just yet. we are looking at a smooth flow of traffic. scott was showing us facebook live. if you are on line you can see what's really behind me and it's not a map, it's actually just a green screen. green sensors that's what shows up on either sides of the bay, a little slowing for hayward southbound 880, getting toward the maze pleasant through oakland and into the waze, westbound 80 slow through berkeley. as far as the transit and transportation goes through the north bay, a nice easy flow of

traffic but there is a little crashl?qñ westbound 37 right ar mare island. just about a half an hour. that's not bad considering that tends to bottleneck. the peninsula shows a clear drive as well and a live look shows palo alto north from ikea heading up toward the city, southbound toward the silicon valley, the bay shore freeway a good. we do have breaking news just into our newsroom right now out of michigan. larry nassar almost attacked in court, take a look at this, this video just into our newsroom. the father of one of the victims asked for five minutes alone in a room with him. the journal declined. and then you saw him there, he ran at nassar. deputies tackled the man, eventually took him into custody. this is yet another sentencing hearing for larry nassar. you hear there the commotion in the courtroom when it all happened. >> deputies rush in. >> as the deputies rush in to tackle the father of one of the

victims. no doubt there has been so much emotion in this case. nassar already being served a sentence of 175 years. >> would you give me one minute? >> you know that i can't do that. that's not how our legal system -- >> you can sense the anger of that father as he rushed in, but he was taken into custody as well. once again another sentencing hearing for larry nassar who has already been convicted of abusing gymnasts, that video into our newsroom this morning. coming up next on "today in the bay," an uncertain future for football, even as we head into super bowl weekend. the reason halftime show performer justin timberlake says he will not allow his child to play football. plus the new poll out this morning showing that he is among a growing number of americans who are concerned about the sport.

vianey arana giving us a better look at what we can expect today as we head throughout the door and throughout the rest of the day. so it's going to be a very nice day, very nice friday. >> very warm into the afternoon, 49 degrees right now in san jose and we are seeing some high clouds, you can see it in the background, this is a live look, but not many. for the most part we're mostly clear. we are not even seeing any fog out on the road. we haven't seen any fog which is great news for early morning commuters. if you are taking your kids to school this morning, a look at your livermore forecast, we are seeing 40s in some spots like livermore, also the north bay waking up to 47 degrees right now. if you notice by 11:00 a.m. jumping up to those 60s and then eventually climbing and getting warmer to about 69 degrees by 1:00. so by recess time it will still be comfortable in the 60s and eventually it will get really warm and then climb into the 70s. so parents nice layers they can shed throughout the afternoon. let's get a check of the traffic with mike. they won't be needing the

jacket but make sure they have that jacket because we have got a few at the lost and found. westbound 92 across the san mateo bridge heading toward foster city and that is a slower drive because of that volume. that's all that's going on on the map. a slowing off of the nimitz freeway, more folks heading across there. a smoother drive through hayward and union city. everybody pushes over towards san mateo and over here, this is where facebook and amazon their new offices opened a short time ago as well over there. a smooth drive through the south bay. just the build for san jose. the biggest backup of course the slowing for the east shore freeway and backup at the bay bridge. back to you. at 6:32 this morning we are monitoring breaking news out of san francisco. a fire breaks out near the iconic painted ladies. >> "today in the bay's" pete suratos is live near the scene. this is near alamo square to explain what happened here, pete. >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus and laura. in the past half hour fire crews finally leaving the scene on

fulton street, but what started here was about 3:00 a.m. a three-story victorian that was vacant and under construction catching fire this morning and that's why crews are here. when we were here at the top of the show, let's show you guys some of that video when it was a busier scene here along fulton street. san francisco fire are saying it started roughly around 3:00 a.m. and that fire affected an adjacent building on the right, displacing five people all together including one infant, but we're told none of them were injured. as for firefighters battling this fire they say it was difficult because that building was under construction so they had to work through a lot of obstruction in that area, bringing in heavy machinery. i spoke to a resident in this area who said he woke up to the sound of chainsaws this morning. here is what he had to tell me this morning. >> chain saw woke me up, i mean, someone at the fire department must have been using a chain frau at 3:15. i saw the whole department down here and one of the firemen saw

me and flashed his light up at me and motioned me out. i motioned my roommates up and said we better get out. >>. >> reporter: no firefighters were injured as well. i want to point out the damage to the building next to the victorian was minimal but the cause is still under investigation. live in san francisco, pete suratos for "today in the bay." it's 6:34 right now. new this morning a controversy over parking continues in palo alto. the city has been trying to ease congestion in the south gate neighborhood. the homes along the medical office complex sit at the corner of el camino real and church shell avenue. in december the city tried giving out parking permits to residents, the city also issued permits to medical workers, the mercury news reports there were not enough permits given to the medical office workers so they had to start parking in the neighborhood. so the city in return put a two hour time limit on parking last month. the paper interviewed the people involved, neighbors say

emergency vehicles can't get through the crowded streets. the medical offices are mad because companies now have to buy daily permits for workers. building owners are worried that many of those tenants will leave over the issue. continuing coverage now of new schools coming to the south bay. new this morning here is a first look at one of the two schools that will be built at the site where the agnew developmental center is on the board of san jose and santa clara. these renderings were shown during a meeting last week. an elementary if i had haddel and high school will be built on the santa clara side and a park on the san jose side. the campuses are separated to open in the fall of 2019. earlier this week we told you how san jose mayor sim liccardo endorsed antonio villaraigosa for governor and today gavin newsom will told a town hall meeting, he is expected to share what he has done for california as current lieutenant governor and will lay out his plan for the state's future. people will have the opportunity

story victorian home went up in flames that was under construction. the flames spread to a house next door forcing a family out of that home but the good news was that there were no injuries and no word yet on a cause. right now in san jose dozens of businesses in san jose and san francisco are on notice that the feds will inspect their hiring records. it's a paper audit for employers, but could lead to deportation of workers. we checked with i.c.e. to see how this works. 77 bay area businesses have three days to provide those records. we know from covering past sweeps that come sockers may stay home because of deportation fears. happening today people who say corporate buses in san francisco do not mix plan to air their frustrations this morning in the morning commute. a protest it planned in san francisco against a growing tech bus phenomenon. those buses transport workers to and from silicon valley. even though the city now has a deal in place with companies and bus operators, opponents say the system needs fixing.
