joining us on this special olympics edition of nbc bay area the news starts right now. good evening and thanks for joining us on this special olympics edition of nbc bay area news. i'm raj mathai. >> and i'm jessica aguirre. dignitaries, athletes and fans now in south korea. opening ceremony less than 24 hours away. but the drama has already begun. looking live over olympic park in pyeongchang. the world is watching, and our crews are there. >> it's friday evening just after 5:00 p.m. there in south korea. garvin thomas kicks off our 18-day journey.

garvin? >> reporter: raj, are you ready for it all? i can't believe it's here. so much excitement here in pyeongchang. and we have the big headlines to share, as well. a team usa gold medal favorite with a slip-up on the ice. controversy, a touchy one surrounding who the u.s. flag bearer should be. but also, some big political news on the korean front. that being the arrival of kim jong-un's younger sister. in just the past few hours, her plane touching down at the airport. she's the first immediate family member of the north korean leader to set foot in south korea. she's said to be in her late 20s or early 30s, is part of north korea's 22-member government delegation that will attend the opening ceremony. get this, she will be seated very near vice president mike pence. speaking of the opening ceremony, team usa speed skater shawnee davis believes he should be carrying the u.s. flag into the ceremony. he says it was a time, and

hamlin was chosen by a tiebreaking coin toss. davis called it dishonorable. he was the heavy favorite to win gold, but nathan chen had an uncharacteristic performance day, faltering on some of his jumps. coming up, we'll have more on what this means for chen and his gold medal hopes. we have so much excitement coming up, not just in the games, but later in the program. that building behind me, olympic stadium, that is where the opening ceremony is set to begin in just about a couple of hours korean time. more on that coming up, including team usa's special weapon to stay warm in this weather. >> it is so exciting. >> i want to be where garvin is. >> you can keep up on social media. he posted this to facebook

tonight with the caption "the realtor ch is on its way to olympic stadium for the opening ceremony. back here in the united states. another dubious night for congress. the federal government has been shut down since 9:00 p.m. this is the second shutdown in three weeks. this is a live look now at the capitol building. here's the twist, the shutdown might be ending in the next few hours. let's bring in ian. these political games frustrating for so many people. what's the latest? >> reporter: instead of just passing a spending bill at 10:30 our time, it will go to the house for a vote within the hour. but the future is uncertain. all that means is nearly 800,000 federal employees could be furloughed today. it was not the outcome congress expected when the day began. the process held up in dramatic fashion by one senator. >> everything about this stipg

bill because it adds to the nation's debt and house democrats want the promise of a debate on immigration, which hasn't happened. we'll keep you updated. >> thank you, ian. developing at this hour, an officer involved shooting at a 76 gas station in antioch off of government course road -- golf course road. the fugitive was taken to the hospital. his condition is unknown. we do know how, however, a gun was found at the scene. new tonight, was it alcohol poisoning? a mysterious death at san francisco state in one of the dorms. a man in his 20s was found unresponsive tuesday night in a first floor dorm room at mary ward hall. students say it was an emotional scene. >> we saw a bunch of police and the firefighters and ambulance and stuff. i saw a girl crying and i was wondering what was happening. >> police are not releasing the

man's name or cause of death. he was not a student at san francisco state. the university did offer counseling for the people who live in ward hall. students say while they're hearing the death may have been caused by alcohol poisoning, they would like the university to tell them what happened. it was a thanksgiving tragedy. and now there's an update. the driver in that deadly crash that killed two people has been arrested. the chp tweeting out this photo tonight. lauren davis is facing charges of murder and gross vehicular manslaughter. investigators say the 26-year-old davis was driving drunk when she lost control of her suv along stanley boulevard. that car rolled several times with five people inside. two passengers died, both not wearing seat belts. davis has had two prior dui arrests, which were reduced to reckless driving. four out of five caught. the fourth suspect is in jail in

connection with two terrifying and deadly home invasions in the north bay. in each case, parents and their children were tied up and a family member shot. the home invasion in santa rosa. the suspects, though, caught in vallejo. cheryl hurd has the late-night hotel arrest. >> reporter: sheriffs swarmed this hotel 6 in santa rosa. several people were arrested. detectives are looking into whether they are connected to the two home invasions. the first one happened at around 4:20 in the morning. late thursday night, we saw two men repairing the front door. >> i'm surprised for something like that to happen in this neighborhood. >> reporter: detectives say five suspects looking for marijuana, tied up a family and shot and wounded one of the victims. a short time later, a similar home invasion at another location. but a man inside that home was shot and killed. the suspect's van was later

spotted in vallejo, where three people were arrested. paul wilgy was driving his wife to her doctor's apartment, when the suspect's van slammed into him. >> a police officer said they were doing 70 or 80 miles per hour. we spun. i blacked out at that point. when i woke up, it was probably right after the car stopped, and the car was small of smoke. >> reporter: wilke had five broken ribs and a collapsed lung. police are looking for one more suspect, a woman. if you have any information, contact the sonoma county sheriff's department. cheryl hurd, nbc bay area news. >> thank you. tomorrow, no school for some students in san mateo. they've been flooded out. it's been 12 hours and counting after a water main broke and flooded part of a neighborhood, a church and a school.

we're joined now from el camino real in san mateo with an update on this mess. >> reporter: that's right. at this point, cal water does not know what caused that water main to break. crews are still out hire, trying to clean up this mess. and also fix and repair part of that pipe that broke. they expect to have that done by tomorrow, so church services can resume this weekend and school can start on monday. tonight, impressive progress, cleaning up gallons and gallons of water. and now mud that covered notre dame avenue in san mateo after a water main broke 12 hours ago. >> you could see the water bubbling out. >> reporter: coming up like a fountain and sending rivers of water rushing into nearby homes, cars, and st. matthews catholic school. flooding the gym, one classroom, and the school's church. 45 minutes before the start of the school day. >> a lot of cars were backed up,

brown tomorrow morning. sergio? >> reporter: well, you know, it's interesting to come across people who knew that justin true bow was here. you would think that they were waiting to see a rock star rather than a prime minister. prime minister justin trudeau discretely slipped into the back seat of his waiting suv after dinner. some people waited for a couple hours just to catch a glimpse. >> we're here for justin trudeau. that's my boyfriend. >> reporter: earlier today, he talked with a few other silicone valley heavy hitters, who just pledged a $2 billion canadian investment. >> we know that being open to investment, to highlighting our

places, we can expand job opportunities for our residents and generate the resources we need to better serve our neighborhoods. >> protesters did interrupt the mayor four times, shouting their opposition to the proposed google development in downtown san jose. this morning, raj broke the story, the 49ers reached a record breaking deal with garoppolo. he flew into san jose with his family. he signed a five-year contract worth more than $137 million. if you do the math, that's $27.5 million a year, making him the highest paid player in the nfl. there's a news conference tomorrow at 11:30 to formally announce that deal. let's go back to south korea now. our live cam at the olympic

park. pyeongchang about to be transformed for this opening ceremony. nearly 3,000 olympians and a whole lot of world leaders. security will be at its peak, but so is the excitement, especially for the asian countries. garvin thomas rejoins us from the host city. what are we going to see, garvin? >> reporter: well, i'll tell you what we're seeing right now. you see the folks there walking behind us, they're heading to the stadium for the opening ceremony, which will begun in just a couple of hours. one thing they'll see, a lot of fireworks. you see those things in the river? we are told there are five different fireworks displays happening. team usa's uniform is going to help keep our athletes warm. they come with built-in heaters. the athletes we know, of course, are excited. but the people here in pyeongchang, they're pretty thrilled, too. this normally sleepy town of 40,000 people has come alive tonight.

the population will more than double in size by the start of the opening ceremony and the pyeongchang olympic stadium. and that, not even counting the hundreds of police and other security personnel roaming the streets, their overwhelming presence, not dampening the enthusiasm for those who have come from around korea and around the world. >> we're very, very happy. >> it's such an awesome atmosphere. i'm so happy to be here. >> reporter: perhaps the only ones more excited than those who will be watching are those who will be walking. >> walking in the opening ceremonies keeps you coming back for four more years, especially with my team of three other guys that are brand new athletes. to watch them achieve that is something that i take a lot of pride in, knowing that they can experience that. and it's just bringing the world together for that moment.

>> reporter: with that in mind, bringing the world together, we're seeing a lot of these around pyeongchang. this is the one korea flag that signifies unification. this during the opening ceremony that the combined north and south korean teams will be walking to. inside that stadium in just a few hours. >> how cool. garvin there for history, the north and south reuniting, at least for these olympic games. just go to that stadium, garvin, and go to the opening ceremony. he'll be with us throughout the month in pyeongchang. you can participate here in the bay area at pier 39 in san francisco. the opening ceremonies starts at 5:00 p.m. head down to pier 39 and have some fun. >> what kind of clothing to i need to go to the watch party? >> light jacket near san francisco. i think people are going to be okay if they're headed out there. you're not going to need a heavier jacket. it's been feeling a lot like

late spring here across the bay area. we've had at least six days of record setting heat. we want to take you out here to south korea and get you the latest on those temperatures. currently 5:26 p.m. there. 33 degrees. and the sun is trying to make it out for the last half of the day. more on the extended forecast at the games here coming up in about a minute and a half. we know there is no sign of rainfall right now, but we want to let you know, we have storm ranger up scanning. it's our mobile doppler radar. the next time the storm system moves in, we'll move this doppler radar to any location we want to get that higher detail of that storm system as it moves in. so remember, storm ranger is our mobile radar. tomorrow morning's forecast, we get a little bit of cloud cover moving in. it will be the coldest here across the tri valley. 50 right here in san francisco. cool 51, and for the north bay,

48 degrees. we're in for more mild weather for tomorrow. it's going to be hard to notice, but temperatures cool off a degree or two. 74 in santa rosa. concord, 76. 75 in san jose. 74 in santa cruz. there's some of the cooling here. san francisco at 68. half moon bay, 66. lake tahoe, you'll see it is mild for tomorrow. 56 degrees. colder on saturday. 38 and by sunday, we're at 47. there is snow to be had despite the lack of storms recently. 32 here at squaw valley and alpine meadows. forecast, dry through the next seven days. we are looking at cooling temperatures, though, from 68 on the average from friday, 62 on monday. a little bit of wind for the weekend, 5 to 20 miles per hour. and watching out for rainfall just to the south by next wednesday. we'll keep a close eye on that.

pablo. it happened at the )la esperana express ) last month. new video into our newsroom. a robbery at gunpoint in san pablo. it happened at the express store. the suspect took cash and took off running. investigators believe he may have robbed the same store last month. a transit bus collided with a car, killing the driver in berkeley. we don't know exactly what led to it, but investigators say the force of the impact sent the bus and the car into a parked car in a driveway, and then into a house. keep it quiet at levi stadium. the noise curfew is causing more
