5:00 am
san francisco right now, all clear with our temperatures heading up to 69 degrees there, 70 in oakland, 75 in san jose and livermore and santa rosa up to 74 degrees. we will talk about a cooler and windier weekend ahead that's in just a few minutes. mike, you are tracking that crash on the evast shore freewa. the reported spinout, sounds like one of those vehicles was driving perhaps a lot faster than they should have been. looking over toward where you can be at the speed limit and that's pretty much all over the bay except for a little slowing past the scene of that crash west 80 just past cummings sky way, but it's clear by the time you get through hercules and highway 4. if you join on past there you're doing just fine. the spinout still blocks your right lane, sounds like there may be some injuries, but we don't know the details on that. and a little buildup over at the bay bridge toll plaza. no major concern as well. your travel times getting through all of your maze outlets are moving at the speed limit.
5:01 am
back to you. now to breaking news that we're following on capitol hill this morning. the federal government is back open this morning after briefly shut down overnight. lawmakers stayed up all night and finally reached a deal on immigration and spending a few hours ago. "today in the bay's" tracie potts live in washington right now with how this deal will impact all of us, good morning, tracie. >> reporter: good morning. initially it's interesting that we don't know how it's impacting federal workers. many offices scrambling to try to figure out whether or not they will be open or when they will be open today as we still await president trump's signature on this budget deal, the last we heard from speaker ryan's spokesperson is that it's been delivered to the white house but no word on whether or not he signed off on it. the white house had said that he would. in the middle of the night lawmakers shut down the government after one person, rand paul, refused to let the vote happen before midnight because he was concerned about
5:02 am
the price tag of this budget. america spending too much, he said, and borrowing too much. then lawmakers were able to reverse that, the senate did a do over, they came up with a temporary budget that takes us another six weeks and a two year spending plan that includes $131 billion for domestic spending, plus more for military spending, some of what republicans wanted, some of what democrats wanted, but nothing on immigration. the senate will start debating that monday afternoon. back to you. >> busy time in d.c. thank you, tracie. now to the coverage of the 2018 olympic winter games. all new overnight, opening ceremonies started. fans, athletes and dignitaries all watching the official start of the games. >> we will be able to as well. "today in the bay's" jay gray talked with americans in south korea. he's got more on the international tension that's actually happening there this morning. >> reporter: a show of force to the north on the eve of the
5:03 am
parade of nations in pyeongchang. >> welcome to pyeongchang. >> reporter: as the winter games begin there is an uneasy and unusual alliance here. north korean leader kim jong-un's sister leads the nation's olympic delegation, the first member of the ruling family to visit the south since the end of the korean war. with north and south korean athletes marching in and competing under the same flag for the first time ever. >> i think it is very honor to my country. >> reporter: for 17 days politics will be replaced by international competition and the american athletes say they are ready. >> i'm really excited to be here and just to be able to finally earn that title of an olympian is amazing. >> reporter: excitement shared by u.s. fans who have made the journey to south korea. >> we're representing uncle sam and having a really good time. >> reporter: there is so much to see. saturday the first full day of
5:04 am
competition at the games with team u.s.a. looking to start its medal run in mixed doubles curling, speed skating and ski jumping. jay gray, nbc news, pyeongchang. and you will be able to watch the entire opening ceremony tonight right here on nbc bay area. coverage starts at 5:00 p.m. or if you're actually feeling a little social, join us for the olympics watch party. you can take part in the fun at the players sports grill at pier 39 in san francisco and that party also will start at 5:00 p.m. >> come on out. 5:04. happening today you can find out ways to help as guest speakers from puerto rico will be in the bay area talking about the ongoing hurricane recovery efforts. hundreds of thousands of puerto ricans still without power, nearly five months following hurricane maria. speakers will be appearing at two silicon valley events today, they will talk about what's needed to rebuild and the need for solar power. the dangers of earthquakes, something all of us here in the bay area deal with. so what would happen if a major
5:05 am
earthquake hit one of the bay area's main fault lines? researchers at lawrence livermore national laboratory are using new technology to simulate a massive 7.0 earthquake on the hayward fault from san jose all the way up to berkeley. >> thom jensen is live with new video. talk to us about how much of an impact that size quake would have on our area. >> reporter: it would be significant, marcus. this really does give us the best picture so far with this new technology and we are here outside the stadium on the uc berkeley campus because the hayward fault actually runs right through the football field here. so this would be ground zero if there was a quake on the hayward fault here. that new super computer simulate that are they just put into action to show people what this would look like if there was a magnitude 7.0 earthquake or anything like that. what that would look like. seismologists warn there is a one in three chance there would
5:06 am
be a 6.7 or higher within the next 30 years. this model shows there would be widespread damage to buildings, roads, rail waist and utilities in the east bay and the economic and social impacts would be significant. scientists at the lawrence livermore and lawrence berkeley laboratory say that the new simulations gives us the clearest picture yet of what that event would look like. one thing they noted was that the east side of the fault would show more significant damage in the orinda moraga area and would experience more shaking than berkeley and oakland on the west side, however there, could be more sustained damage because of the shear population on the west side with berkeley and oakland and more buildings out here. a couple quick safety notes, if you do find yourself in an earthquake it is better to drop and cover and the people who know better say do not stand up. it's always better to take cover under a table they used to say, in a doorway, that's not so, and you do still want to stay away
5:07 am
from windows, however, and make a mental note of those areas in your home where there is good cover around tables and other areas. also keep a lot of bottled water and nonperishable foods on hand and an earthquake kit. it's best to have one of those around your desk and around your home, your desk at work and around your home, an earthquake kit like this one you can keep in your car or in your home and at work, it has water in it, has a little light that you can break open, it stays lit for 12 hours and if anybody needs to find you, even a whistle. so have something like this on hand is very smart. we're live in berkeley, thom jensen, "today in the bay." recheck your earthquake kits, you may put nonperishable food in there but check the dates. >> thanks so much, thom. we're getting ready for a look at the nice weather that's continuing across the bay area. >> a little bit of patchy fog,
5:08 am
nothing too dense as of now. as the morning goes along sometimes we start to see the fog developing and getting thicker. right now in santa rosa visibility still pretty good at four miles. we have seen light patchy fog moving into livermore, but as of now once again it looks pretty clear. as we start out the day in oakland we will be at 53 degrees at 8:00, some upper 60s as we go throughout the afternoon, briefly hitting that 70 degree mark and cooling down quickly. make sure you do have a jacket as you get ready to head out. going for a jog in san jose early this morning we begin with temperatures in the low 50s and if you go around 10:00 it will be about 63 degrees with sunshine, at noon 71 degrees. so starting to get very warm. as we head over to mike now you're starting out with two reports for san jose. i'm trying to sort out the differences. sounded like a duplicate but now the details come in a little bit differently. looking toward most of the bay an easy flow of traffic. we are tracking that crash and the slowing because a lanes are
5:09 am
blocked, a couple lanes westbound 80 over at cummings sky way. now, originally i had a report of this, now something going on 880 at coleman. turns out there may be a roadside fire, a little brush fire. it doesn't sound like a bigger deal. there was also a crash reported in the area around brokaw and 101 coming in toward that area. we are tracking both of those scenes and i will see if the details from brokaw are the same or if there is a crash that is found. no slowing shows up on our roadway there. an earlier crash southbound 280 just off 85 coming over here, that should be clear from the roadway but the crews are on the shoulder because there is a damaged fence, just keep that in mind as well. coming up next on "today in the bay," disturbing allegations against a popular airline, a woman coming forward this morning saying that she was forced to flush her pet hamster down a toilet before boarding a flight. more market mayhem, dow down more than a thousand points.

5:12 am
good friday morning. right now at 5:12 as you're getting ready to pack up the car and head to the sierra let's get a look at our forecast. squaw valley and alpine meadows today up to -- rather tomorrow up to 39 degrees, on sunday 45
5:13 am
and early next week slight chance of some snow flurries there. we have 49 inches of snow at the base and some of the trails still open. here is a look at the comparison from pyeongchang, south korea, 28 degrees to 35 right now in squaw valley. we will take a look at our forecast with some cooler air ahead, not this cool, but some cooler temperatures coming up. and no problem right here for 580 coming out of the altamonte pass, 84 a little bit of slowing, a few cars on the roadway. the south bay your northbound commute looks just fine, i'm still tracking details on a couple southbound crashes coming up. and in business news this morning, more market mayhem. welcome back to you. take a look at these numbers, the dow saw its second largest point loss in history on thursday. the first biggest point loss, well, it used to be -- the first biggest point loss was earlier this week, dow down more than 1,000.
5:14 am
now, the irony in here is caused in part by fears the economy is growing too quickly. keep in mind the stock market the numbers and the economy are not the same thing. tax breaks, those thousand dollars bonuses all contributing to fears the economy is hot and interest rates will go up. twitter and facebook making news this morning. let's get to4q?n
5:15 am
amazon alexa, except it uses siri. it's getting very tepid reviews, one reviewer not happy with siri saying it is dumber on the speaker than it is on the phone. now, the speaker itself sounds again mem. i have alexa, i hooked her up to my home stereo system -- >> and that's really great. >> it's really great and they are only 50 bucks if you buy the little one. >> you are talking about apple, a lot of people love apple products, but new this morning terrifying moments for a tampa man who actually had his apple air pods, those little ones you put in your ear, they were blown out literally. jason cou jason noticed smoke coming from her ear pods. he set the pods down and when he return he was shocked to find the right ear bud blown apart and it was charred. he says he's thankful he took out"xoñ the headphones just in .
5:16 am
>> i don't know what would have happened to my ear but i'm sure since it hangs down it could have been earlobe, my earlobe could have got burnt. >> an apple spokesnf said investigating and will reach out to the man. new this morning the latest dispute involving an airline passenger sparking controversy and questions about the line on animals. that dispute started last november with a college student who was told by telephone that spirit airlines would allow her to bring her pet hamster on board as a support animal. the airline backtracked. the student said at the airport she ended up having to flush her beloved hamster down the toilet. this is tough if this is her support animal. she claims that an airline worker advised her to do so. spirit denies that claim. the airline does say that the passenger was initially mist informed. the airline also said that she was offered a later flight to make arrangementsbsdx for her hamster. >> it just seems inhumane. 5:16.
5:17 am
when it comes to setting records, two it typically better than one, especially for one chicago area high school. >> they just set a guinness world record with 44 sets of twins in one high school class. >> it's no strength record, it's no academic record. >> it's more luck. >> it's exciting because it's every kid's dream to be in the guinness book of world record. >> that's just two of the 88 twins in the sophomore clash. not to mention one set of triplets as well, about 10% of the class is made up of twins. three times the average rate. and it shatters their old record of 24 sets of twins. you can see the whole story doing double take later on "today." i wonder if there's a record for triplets. >> i don't want to set it. i've done enough already i think to contribute.
5:18 am
>> right now before you head out the door we want to get a check what's going on weather wise. another warm day. >> it's going to be warm, but let's get used to cooler temperatures because that's on the way, too. it's not supposed to be this warm. as we get a look at what it feels like now as you get ready to head out the door it's mostly in the low 40s, although we have had low 50s for san francisco, oakland and also in san jose. we have some 40s elsewhere. the seven-day forecast is up at the bottom of the screen and you will be able to see us heading back closer to normal for this time of year, but let's talk about today, our record highs and what i'm forecasting for this afternoon. we should stay below these records in most spots except for oakland, looks like we could tie the record there, and santa rosa will be one degree below the record high temperature, but much of the bay area reaching into the mid 70s. so let's see how that looks as we plan out our day. we will be at 52 degrees at 8:00 in san jose, noontime 71 degrees, great day to take the
5:19 am
lunch outside or go for a nice long walk once you get off of work, it will be in the low 70s and cooling off quickly. we still have a high amount of tree pollen, you've probably seen the trees, it looks like this with those white flowers, they are just blooming all over the bay area and very early, too, because we are still seeing some very warm temperatures, i think it's spring. well, we are going to have an area of low pressure dropping in as we go into the next couple of days. look at what happens, we call this an inside slider, it stays inland and misses out on the bay area, but may bring in some light snow flurries for parts of the sierra and also could bring in some light rain for southern california, but for us we will just feel the winds pick up and it's still going to be dry into next week. so maybe you will kick off your weekend at the chinese new year street fair, that happening in san francisco, wear something nice and warm, it won't be as warm as today, some lower 60s in the forecast and let me know about your weekend plans. i will have the complete weekend
5:20 am
forecast, that's coming up in about 20 minutes. so hang out for a little while. we're going to see those temperatures in the mid 60s, some gusty winds, especially between late saturday night and early sunday morning. that's when we will also have an increased fire danger into next week, some highs in the mid to upper 60s inland. mike, you have an update on those crashes. >> we have another one as we were coming to set i saw it pop up on the chp report. we are looking over here, it was over here, 101 at tully, it sounds like a minor issue so i took it off the screen until i get more detail. sounded like no lanes were blocked. we have this update, though, i have more right by sjc, there are the runways for san jose international, it's southbound 101 at brokaw road, that's where the crash ended up being the final location because chp is arriving on scene now. no lanes reportedly blocked and we don't see the slowing and that's the good news. also the fire that was reported 880 over at coleman sounds like it was a smaller issue, maybe a brush fire and that's cleared from the chp report as well. the south bay looking pretty good but we're tracking that
5:21 am
because we've seen a number of incidents pop up there. still a little slowing as you travel past the single car spinout and the lanes blocked for the activity at cummings sky way, a little slow through rodeo and clearing by the time you get to hercules, that's the upper east shore freeway, a smoother drive toward the bay bridge. our emeryville camera, i turned to see a beautiful view but now we see some slowing. we're slowing around the bend, looks like someone was tapping the brakes and there may be a disabled vehicle in the trunl, we will track this but so far no backup at the bay bridge toll pla plaza. back to you. coming up on "today in the bay," watch your mailboxes, this morning we will show you a way to protect yourself from thieves this tax season.
5:22 am
5:23 am
5:24 am
welcome back, everyone. it's 5:24. new this morning the opening of san francisco's new transbay transit center still months away but some groups still concerned about what they believe is a homeless strategy that falls short. neighborhood groups believe the new five-story center may end up drawing higher amounts of homeless people. the security plan that is in place already calls for an active homeless outreach team, but according to the examiner some groups want increased measures, especially for the surrounding neighborhoods. more details now, overnight we looked closer at san francisco's most recent homeless numbers. the city's 2017 count recorded
5:25 am
just and you 7,500 homeless people, that was a 1% dip from the year before. over four years the number of homeless in san francisco is up 2%. good news for thousands of families in the bay area. it's official, two of oakland city workers' largest unions have approved a new contract. the fight over the contract really disrupted services back in october -- i mean december, rather. that's because 3,000 city workers walked off their jobs, shutting down head start programs, libraries and other important services. that fight was over money and the new contract gives workers a 6% raise over two years. the agreement will now go before the city council. something for all of us to watch out for, new this morning as those tax returns start to arrive thieves are stepping up their patrols of mailboxes. the number of mailbox thefts are up this week. thieves are looking for your tax refund check and willing to force open locked mailboxes. have your refund directly
5:26 am
deposited into your account. pick up your mail as soon as possible. and if you are out of town, tell your post office to hold your mail until you return. most importantly don't send cash in the mail. >> that's a no-no. >> just in case you're thinking about my birthday present. coming up next on "today in the bay," mopping up. >> what do you think it smells like today? >> yucky. >> yucky indeed. the cleanup efforts still under way at a peninsula school after a massive water main break and what this means for students there this morning. and a live look outside. city by the bay. san francisco. great place to head for the weekend. the weather is going to be terrific. we will get the full forecast with meteorologist kari hall coming up.
5:27 am
5:28 am
5:29 am
and good friday morning to you as we have come to the end of the workweek. taking live look outside, pleasanton or really anywhere you live in the bay area you can look up and you might see this, a beautiful half-moon this morning, almost looks like you one you would draw when you were little. okay, maybe that was just me. i would always draw half moons. >> really? mine always had eyes, big eyes. >> good morning to you. thank you for waking up with us, i'm plks. >> and i'm laura garcia. let's check the forecast, a very nice start at least to our morning. >> yeah, it's cool, it's clear, we've only seen a little light patchy fog, not an issue at all
5:30 am
as we get a live look outside in san jose. let's go to los gatos where our temperatures will be in the low 50s. you do need a jacket with some mid 70s again today, but this is going to be the last day. we will have these near record high temperatures in this stretch, it's been about a week, so we are in for some cooler temperatures just in time for the weekend. we will talk about some things going on around the bay area coming up in about seven minutes, but, mike, some complications for the bay bridge? causing a slowdown. we know the metering lights will go on about this time and they did at 5:23 just after the last report. some slowing here, but they may be slowed down a little more because of a disabled vehicle. we will show you the map and we do see slowing all the way from the toll plaza up to the incline to treasure island. i told you i had reports of a stalled vehicle. westbound one lane reportedly blocked as you approach that treasure island off ramp. there may be an issue for the eastbound side as well but we don't see slowing, lighter traffic flow. crash cleared from cummings sky
5:31 am
way, the rest of the bay moves well. breaking news for you, a live look in washington where the latest federal shutdown is nearly over. hours after it started. we are waiting for the president to sign that deal. this is good news for everyone. a short time ago the house agreed to a two year budget deal on the heels of a senate agreement. this goes to the president's desk. >> at about 2:30 this morning pacific time the house passed that deal. senate passed it four hours earlier. it includes funding to keep the government running until the last week of march. technically the government ran out of money at midnight, but obviously the shutdown did not cause any major disruptions. the agreement increases domestic spending and suspends the debt ceiling until march of 2019. "today in the bay's" tracie potts is in washington, she will join us with more reaction coming up a bit later on "today in the bay." also happening this morning, mopping up. st. matthews catholic school in san mateo is closed for its second day.
5:32 am
this as crews are working to repair a massive water main break that swamped the campus and neighboring homes. nbc bay area sky ranger shows the daniel from above. you can see there. >> you can imagine the concern for people that live in that neighborhood. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us live from the street level now where you've been digging for answers as to a cause and really there's going to be some cost and concern for the homeowners. >> reporter: that's right, laura and marcus. the goal is to have all of the campus here at st. matthew's catholic church cleaned up in time for sunday mass, so that's just a few days away, and then also in time for monday morning class, but you can see the crews are still digging there to try to find that spot where they need to repair and that work is continuing this morning nearly 24 hours after that water main break. it was a water main that was two feet across so we're talking about a lot of water in a short amount of time. it took 12 hours for that flow to go from a river down to a
5:33 am
trickle and then crews only then were able to dig in and start to repair that line that broke and figure out the reason why it failed. by then the water was inside st. matthews catholic church and inside the school gym which was brand-new. water rushed through the gym and into the homes and cars on the other side. aragon boulevard, where the acip family lives. >> oh, god, my car was parked. >> my son's car was almost under water. i said run out and get your car out of it. >> you can see where the party level was. >> reporter: now, several folks also had feet of water in the basement of their homes on aragon boulevard, but this could happen to any one of us. we all have water mains leading into our homes. the request he is if this happens to you will your nbc bay area consumer investigator chris chmura has done a lot of work with this and he says that car flooding is almost always covered, so good news for the acip family.
5:34 am
flooding inside the home is generally covered when it's caused by something like a leaky dishwasher or broken water heater. storm flooding is largely not covered unless you have federal flood insurance. in this case this is not -- in this case the flooding was caused by an outside agency so the flooding may not be covered by insurance. the insurance company could argue that the water district is liable. the best advice is to consult your individual policy if you find yourself in a situation like this one. as far as this situation goes, we will continue to watch for those repairs and the cause to see if it's something that is a greater concern not only in san mateo but bay area wide. in san mateo, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." a lot of people are concerned about that, kris, thank you so much. it's 5:34 right now. safety concerns rattling a north bay neighborhood this morning. the search continues for a fifth suspect after two violent home invasions. yesterday s.w.a.t. teams and
5:35 am
police filled the streets of santa rosa. investigators say a crew of armed men and women targeted two homes in santa rosa yesterday. they were looking for marijuana. the suspect tied up families, shot two victims, one of the victims died. this happened yesterday morning on fulton road. detectives later spotted the suspect's van in vallejo where three people were arrested, two got away, authorities eventually caught one of those suspects and the other one took off. law enforcement is still looking for one more suspect this morning. speaking of law enforcement, marcus, sunnyvale department of public safety will soon add a new k-9 to their force, it comes after they were forced to replace jax, a k-9 killed in the line of duty last year. the department is reportedly receiving funding from a grant to cover the cost to get a new dog. mercury news reports the grant is coming from the fallen k-9 replacement grant, it will reimburse the department up to $10,000 for a new k-9 and a bulletproof vest. jax sadly died after being

stabbed by a suspect on halloween. the off-season may have already just started, but for san francisco 49er fans you can already call it a success. with the signing of quarterback jimmy garoppolo to a two -- to a long-term deal. now, it's a story our own raj mathai broke on twitter yesterday morning. >> we are talking some big money here. "today in the bay's" bob redell live at levi stadium with a press conference that is supposed to happen today to formally announce. this is a mega deal. the 49ers won but i think garoppolo really did, too. >> reporter: you can make an argument both sides are winning after getting some details. first that news conference 11:30 this l>xpmorning. that's when jimmy garoppolo and the 49ers will answer questions about this five-year contract extension that makes him the highest paid player in the nfl. jimmy garoppolo and his family
5:37 am
arrived via private jet yesterday back to the bay area for this morning's official announcement. this is video released by the team. under this deal the 49ers will pay garoppolo $137.5 million over the next five years which comes out to $27.5 million annually. you will recall the 49ers acquired garoppolo mid season in a trade with the new england patriots. the 49ers went 5-0 in the games in which he started as quarterback generating a lot of buzz for a team that until then had had a losing record. in an article posted on line the 49ers say they believe they can use garoppolo as a prime selling point for luring other top nfl talents in their franchise to convince their players that there is stability now in this organization. the 49ers also city this puts them in a good position for the draft since they don't need to look for a quarterback now, they will be able to use their ninth or tenth pick position in the first round for top pa lent and
5:38 am
a non-quarterback position. reporting live here outside levi stadium in santa clara, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> i need that guy's agent. >> jimmy is my new best friend. >> thanks a lot, bob. going to see a lot of number 10 jerseys out there, mike. >> i think so. hundreds of millions of dollars now jimmy can afford a nice two bedroom one batting in the south bay. a nice flow of traffic, no problems right now north bay down into the south bay. we did have slowing southbound 101 past the scene of that crash where one lane was blocked. chp has not given up the all clear but the speeds have been nice for the last 15 minutes. you're doing already head to get past highway 87 and the airport. northbound is your commute direction, we see a little slowing there. the bay bridge we do see more slowing across the span but improving across the high-rise. now there seems to be a stall on the incline. another problem. the weather is free and it's always pretty nice.
5:39 am
>> and this weekend will deliver. >> it's going to be a really nice weekend. we've been needing cooler temperatures to bring us down from all of these record highs we have had. we will get it as we go into the day tomorrow with 65 degrees at the coast, 67 for the bay and 71 inland. so it's still going to be very comfortable. sunday more of the same, no major changes here, but it will be windy throughout the weekend so that may make it feel a little cooler. as you get ready to head out to giants fanfest in true at&t fashion we are going to have the type of weather that's going to be windy and cool and all depends on where you are for that fanfest, you will definitely need to bring a jacket. high temperatures reaching into the low 60s for the afternoon. if you are going down to watch the at&t pebble beach pro am that's going to be really nice but also school with sunshine, saturday the coolest day with a high of 62 degrees and those

winds are really going to be gusting. going down to paso robles you will find the warmer weather. 77 on saturday and 75 degrees on sunday. all clear throughout the weekend there and then going down to l.a. it also cools off for eight afternoon and a few more clouds, 63 degrees, 71 degrees on sunday. and then if you are lucky enough to go to the sierra this weekend, maybe you will be watching some of the games and testing them out on the slopes yourself, it's going to be 35 degrees tomorrow and on sunday a high of 41 degrees. we will bring you back home and i will have a look at today's temperature trend coming up in about three minutes. >> that's a dangerous thing, you watch the olympics and then you feel like you are an olympian and realize you are not. thanks a lot, kari. coming up next on "today in the bay," bringing attention to a nationwide problem, the new billboards you will see across the east bay. you could actually probably see them on your way to work this morning. and the u.s. government shut

down again overnight and it won't reopen until we hear from him. when "today in the bay" continues.
5:42 am
5:43 am
right now at 5:43 time to grab the coffee and go, it's a chilly morning as we get a live look outside in fremont, already busy, too, out there on the roads. as we get a look at our temperatures you may have to turn the heater on inside the car, we're only going to be in the upper 40s, but then today open up the windows and let in some of this comfortable air, we
5:44 am

first. president trump often talks about firing his chief of staff, that said, jon kelley in a very tough spot this morning. kelly publicly supported porter even after those terrible pictures came out and apparently kelly has known for months there were allegations against porter that were holding up his security clearance and yet kelly still supported him. yesterday the white house said the administration could have handled the situation better. "the new york times" is reporting that president trump has been on the phone with reince priebus, the guy he fired, to talk to him about whether he should fire his present chief of staff, jon kelley. the other big story you were talking of course the overnight government shutdown. last night while you were sleeping the two houses both alike in dignity passed legislation to keep the government running. seconds ago during our commercial break president trump tweeted that he had signed that bill. how did they do it? well, by promising a lot to everyone. not a wall, not daca, but hundreds of billions of dollars

worth of spending. we're seeing a very curious change in american politics with republicans leading the way on spending and cutting taxes at the same time. this is very peculiar. massive new debts and deficits. republicans used to hate deficits. let me take you back to 2012 republican national convention where they set up a massive debt clock right in the stadium showing what they called the obama debt. the debt is almost twice that now. so yes the senate has passed it, yes the house has passed it and, again, the president has just signed it so the government is back open. i was just on the phone moments ago to people driving into their jobs in washington not certain whether or not they had a job to go to today, but as of just a few minutes ago the government is back open. we're always interested in what you think. we would like to hear from you on twitter. i am @scottmcgrew. all new this morning we are hearing from vice president mike
