south korea. the athletes are already there ape the excitement is building here in the bay area. especially for the korean-american community. robert handa joins us at the nbc bay area watch party. robert? >> reporter: well, it would be nice to be at the olympics but i have a good spot to watch the opening ceremony. we're here at players grill on pier 39 with their 36 tv screens ready to go. we have 20 olympians here to help us party. some are already seated here. there are quite a few events going on around the bay area. emotions will be running high at the korean-american watch party set to start later this evening. >> korean has 22 athletes at olympics. we can't show you video of the opening ceremony until it airs tonight here on nbc bay area. but these photos give a sneak

peek into the event and all the glory and political intrigue. dennis quan and his group korean american foundations are hosting an olympics watch party at bar basic this evening in san francisco. >> north korea and south korea get together for the olympics. it's a first for many of us to see it come together. >> north korean leader kim jong-un sent his sister to the opening family. she sat a few feet from vice president mike pence who refused to stand when the unified korean team entered. with events including ice skating underway and opening ceremony coverage about to begin, dennis quan said it's time for unity. >> it's a politicized olympics it's a lot but it's harder to get people to come together to share a experience on a personal level. luckily the olympics provides

>> it's going to come through as we head throughout the weekend. we're tracking the warm air we've had all week will gradually push to the south and make way for the area of low pressure to move in. dropping temperatures by increasing winds. brand new wind in effect for sonoma counties and napa. the fire danger will be el evaluated with the lower humidity but in the hill winds could hit 50 miles per hour. a closer look at the win and how it will play out on saturday morning. 9:00 a.m. not too bad. once we hit the evening hours, things will pick up possibly on average 20 to 30 here in the north bay and 20 to 25 for the east bay. anywhere from 17 in san jose to 20 in san fransisco. we'll let you know when rainfall could get close to the bay area. that's in about 15 minutes. >> thank you. government shut down over. but another issue continues to cause turmoil in the west wing. after the house passed a budget,

the president tweeted he would sign the bill. later he addressed the resignation of staff secretary rob porter amid allegations of domestic violence. statements of support for porter have many criticizing the president. >> as you probably know, he said he's innocent. and i think you have to remember that. he said very strongly yesterday he's innocent. you'll have to talk to him about that. we absolutely wish him well. >> the president did not mention the women, including two of porter's ex-wives who claims of abuse are supported by photos and court documents. john kelly is under fire for not acting sooner. especially since porter was handling sensitive material. a high profile meeting for the high profile minister. justin trudeau is in the bay area forging new plans and

alliances with california. >> meeting with governor brown on climate change and possible deals with canadian zero emission vehicles. he chatted with the lieutenant governor who tweeted out a great conversation with justin trudeau this morning about universal health, care, and climate change. and the guy has gray hair. trudeau briefly popped out of the fairmont to waive before leaving. charlotte schultz came bearing gifts. >> i told him he had to back and stay long enough to wear the socks. >> socks for the prime minister. mr. trudeau spent time with george schultz who knew the prime minister's father and heads a group called north american forum with canada and mexico. where is suspect number

five? the certainly search on for the wanted in connection with thefts. this is amber pepbray. they tied the families up and searched for pot. they lead police on the high speed chase which ended in a crash. four other people here, you see them, were arrested in connection with to the home invasion. you know this plenty of hazards on the local roads. here is a notable problem. northbound 880 there's a dip in the fast lane. you can see the uneven road. you can make it out there. you can see it there. the dip is after the 66 avenue exit right by the coliseum. from the ground level, it doesn't look that bad it's 60, 70, or more miles per hour it could be dangerous. crews will be repairing this dip tonight. the high cost of living in the bay area is creating a

problem in one particular neighborhood. we're talking about mountain view. apparently people living in the motor homes and the city say people are dumping human wastes in park bathroom polices. they launched a waste disposal vehicles. they get vouchers to take their homes to the center city. it went so well, the city is preparing to offer the service again. that'll start next month. the most talked about man in the bay area showed up at work today a whole lot richer. after signing the most lucrative contract in nfl history, jimmy g explained to us his whirlwind 24 hours. he's given the 49ers hope. scott, the million dollar question. did you ask him for a loan? >> reporter: yeah, we talked about money. what do you expect? he tells us he plans to move slowly when it comes to all that

money. but he said he plans to move quickly when it comes to trying to bring the 49ers to the next level. >> the 49ers made it official. jimmy garoppolo is the team's $137 million man. facebook fans are happy. >> per year or something? not bad. >> as a new quarterback is taking it all in. >> there's a lot going on. and then today, you know, it's exciting. after leading the niners to five straight wins at the end of last season, garoppolo is the toast of the town. >> we needed a kick starter for our team, which was, you know, flat lining there for awhile. >> and management said the big contract is money well spent for the future. >> ultimately there was a parade in philly yesterday and that's where we want to be. >> as for jimmy g himself, he said he's happy to be in the bay area and might someday even buy

reflector telescope earlier this week. the asteroid will get even closer to earth today within 43,000 miles. astronomers say they were hoping to get a better glimpse of the asteroid tonight, but it may be door below the horizon to catch a good look. no rainfall right now, but the mobile doppler radar is scanning in the south bay. when wet weather will be moving into california. that's coming up in about eight minutes. >> this mission decades in the making. the san jose man heads to japan to return a flag his father took from another soldier on the battle field. a shady force tinkering with air fare. nbc bay area responds next. at te

festivities. >> reporter: the town is alive now with things like snow sculptures. there's fun stuff like that. there's also some stuff that is pretty serious. you see everywhere these flags. it's the one korea flag that symbolizes unification. with the combined north and korea teams will be marching under. as they enter the stadium. we'll have more tonight after the opening ceremony. >> looking forward to it. thank you. flags is a big part of the olympic tradition. it's fitting that the bay area veteran is about to embark on a mission to pay tribute to the importance of the flag from another country. he's returning a japanese flag that his father took from a dead soldier during world war ii. the vietnam veteran spoke with us. >> he enjoys his morning coffee on his porch near downtown san jose. there's times where he's fighting his demons.

>> nightmares, fits of rage. >> now the former army infantry is about to embark on another mission. his father was a world war ii veteran and he took this flag from a soldier. it has bloodstains and tribute lettering. the flag belongs to the japanese soldier's team. he's about to repatuate erepatu >> charlie had an expert translate the writing on the flag. charlie was able to determine the soldier was from kyoto. he'll fly to the region next week to begin tracking down the man's family. war is a very negative experience. i think in society we take it too lightly, i believe.

>> charlie doesn't know if he'll get rid of his own demons. he hopes the next mission will help and at the same time, perhaps bring peace to another family along the way. charlie will board a military plane next week. he'll be a civilian on that flight on a personal mission for his family. >> okay. what is going on with air fare? security experts say there are shady verses now. >> we're looking into the problem. we talk about air fare. it means we're paying higher here. >> yeah. we were tipped off to suspicious activity with air fare. it lead us to a local company that is trying to fight back. we want to give you an inside look at distill networks in san francisco. it's a cybersecurity firm in the city and engineers told us they're working to shut down illicit computer programs that have been tinkering with air fares. >> this is a constant battle.

there is no rainfall still to be had here. we've had record-setting temperatures the past seven days. extremely dry. no rainfall at all so far in february. but when the next one arrives, we have storm range up and scanning. we'll be able to track it better than the competition. we'll talk about when the rainfall will get closer to california in the extended photo. i want to get a wider look now with the next change in weather and that has everything to do with the area of low pressure. as this noses its way down into california through tomorrow, it's going to push a lot of that warmest air to the south. and the cool down temperatures in the next two days and increase the wind. i think overall for the morning hours, most of the bay area will still gradually see a breeze beginning to pick up. nothing major. 52 in the south bay. trivalley starting off with a cold 47. it's in the north bay where the winds will pick up the most in the late morning hours. 9:00 and 10:00 and begin here with a temperature of 46.

temperatures as we head through the day tomorrow will be dropping off. it will be mild but not nearly as it warm as it has been for the past week. upper 70s to 80s we'll drop down to 70 in santa rosa. concord 71. san jose 72. there's the cooler breeze moving in from san francisco to half-moon bay. what about the extended forecast? i really think the mark differences in our temperatures certainly will be felt once we hit sunday and monday's forecast. some increased cloud cover sunday and monday with the system. and then check it out. the new change in the forecast is by next tuesday and wednesday. we'll see a storm system move in from the south and it looks like rainfall will stay away from us. it will get close. so we're going to be monitoring that tuesday and wednesday as the central valley will be getting wet weather. we're dry as we head throughout thursday and friday. temperatures dropping down with wind this weekend. we'll go from an average of 71 on saturday down to 66 by monday. and some increased high cloud cover, as well. and right now we're dry from any

the heavy weight fight is over and the jury has been dismissed. uber and waymo agreed to settle the dispute over trade secrets. it's a big deal in the silicon valley and beyond. waymo which is owned by google's parent company claimed uber stole secrets for the self-driving cars. uber agreed to give part of the company to waymo in the form of equity valued at $245 million. a humanitarian crisis has

been forgotten. bay area activists say puerto rico is still devastated and that silicon valley will be rushing in to help with technology. the hurricanes battered the island five months ago. the third of the island has no electricity. the community foundation met today to plan a tech rescue. >> it's basically to buy solar panels. so the community can be powered up for $30,000. can you imagine, you know, getting the grid up for the puerto ricans. community clinics are considered vital to the recovery. it will cost some $3 million. the community foundation is heading up the fundraising efforts. back with more in a moment.
