back with a look after the short dance which just leaves this ladies short program to go to move on to the free skates, that's the list. canada, u.s., russia, japan and italy. >> that was her triple lutz/triple toe combination. both jumps receiving an underrotation. the triple toe loop looked all right from one angle but not the other. >> watch this in slow mo. it's like jumping on a trampoline at the wrong time. she gets so little height. you need to have spring and use

>> well, she's usually a short program specialist. today she had that bobble. she said she always struggles with the nerves, with mental focus when it comes to the technical elements. and that's why she's never on the top of the podium. she could compete with the best of them. >> but even with those mistakes, her technical score currently very close to that of carolina kostner. that turn between the triple flip and the triple toe loop, the first jump element, is definitely hurting her on the grade of execution, how well she performed the element, but both jumps were judged as cleanly. and that short program is just breath-taking. it's my favorite of any of the ladies in the last few seasons. >> will it top kostner? we'll see. carolina kostner in the lead right now. so we'll get the numbers for kaetlyn osmond. one skater left, evgenia medvedeva. hi. how's it going? alright, how ya doing? welcome! so, this is the all-new chevy traverse.

tonight's primetime broadcast was presented by visa. >> team canada waits. carolina kostner of italy leads. is it going to be close here? >> it's going to be close, i think, if she didn't make those two mistakes on her jumping passes. right here was the opening triple/triple. you see the turn in between. the triple toe was called underrotated. >> the triple lutz went off of the wrong edge. the lutz goes off the back outside edge -- excuse me, that was the triple flip. sorry, that close-up on the legs. here the triple toe loop, watch, very underrotated there. >> she was second best in the world last year at the world championship. 71.38, so not enough to even really get near carolina kostner and kaetlyn osmond, even though the matters don't matter here in the team event, the placements do, so it's italy, canada, japan and then the u.s.

bradie tennell in that fourth spot. >> if you want to watch the best skater in the world the past couple of seasons and the skater who has defined dominance in figure skating, watch this right now. yevgenia medvedeva, just 18 years old from moscow, but coming back from a foot injury. and that's the only question mark. ♪ ♪ >> she lives for the fight. she loves competing.

>> she is the gold standard for ladies figure skaters. she set the short program up so that all three jumping passes are in the second half, different from anybody we've seen. and the most difficult. >> get that 10% bonus. ♪ ♪ ♪

>> you also notice that genia jumps with her arms over her head. the first jump with one arm, the second with two. jumping with your arms over your head makes the element so much more difficult. your center of gravity goes way up around your head versus around your chest. >> a solo jump coming up right here. nothing fazes this girl. oh, that got close on the double axel. sometimes she'll miss a double axel out of all of her elements, the easiest of them.

until the fall when she fractured a bone in her foot. she missed two months of competition. came back in january to the european championships and took on her training mate, only 15, also from russia who's turned into a big rival. she was defeated there. so she came here to pyeongchang and people said, well, which one will we see? which medvedeva. and perhaps we just got an answer. >> well, at the european championships coming back after that injury, she looked a little bit rusty in certain areas, maybe with her conditioning and nerves. but she looks reborn in so many ways here in pyeongchang. every element aside from that double axel that made tara gasp was absolutely brilliant, on another level. >> here's her triple flip, arm over the head. very subtle, look at the flow in between both those jumps, both arms over the head to make it

even more difficult. >> and this, the triple loop absolutely stunning. not an eyelash out of place. this is olympic ladies level figure skating, breath taking. >> if she's ever going to miss a jump, it's the easiest one on this double axel. look how she didn't get much height on that. but somehow she is so good, she was pulling that off. she's such a competitor, johnny. just think about it, terry, just as you said, undefeated. then her little teammate, a junior lady last year, you know, comes onto the scene this year, is on fire and beats her three weeks before the biggest moment of her life. >> it's been that way for russia the last several years. elena sodikiva comes on. an overnight sensation after the team event in russia. remember she was on every billboard, every commercial and now she's not even on the scene.

>> you may remember her as the little girl in the red dress at the sochi olympics. with all of that pressure put on her shoulders after the team event, she struggled in the individual event, but yevgenia medvedeva has that air about her, nothing will come between her and these moments at the olympics. >> you saw what she needed to lead and she just sailed right on by that. 81 and change and the wide smile now on the face of medvedeva. >> that is the highest score ever. >> and well deserved. amazing grade of executions on every element. >> so, the ladies short program comes to an end, and medvedeva, as expected, as hoped for so many who have followed her the last couple of years, wins it. carolina kostner terrific in second, caitlin oz monday,

satoko miyahara ahead of bradie tennell. it's the difference between the u.s. getting seven or six points. overall, though, here you go. here's how it stands. canada, the olympic athletes from russia, the u.s., japan and italy the top five. they qualify and will move on to the free skate portion of the team event. the u.s. in a great spot to try to win a medal here teamwise. your takeaway from what you just saw? >> yevgenia medvedeva is here for an olympic gold medal. she was stunning from start to finish. >> the individuals, i'm really looking forward to with her and that rivalry with her younger teammate. it's going to be the hunger games. >> there's a lot going on today still. you've got the pairs free skate portion of the team event. earlier you had the ice dancers, the shibutanis. i know you guys were here watching. what are your thoughts on what you saw? and the u.s.' overall chance to look ahead and medal in the team

know who's boss around here. the women's snowboard slope style qualifier was postponed because of the wind. south lake tahoe's jamie anderson will have to wait at least one more day to begin her sense of her gold medal, which is just fine with her mother, lauren. >> i'm glad they canceled it because it's dangerous. it really is. the wind blew and she fell and she got hurt, not bad, but you know. it hurts. that's high. >> a little windy out here! >> reporter: bay area native and gold medalist jonny moseley says cold temperatures are great for conditions on the course, just not for these highly conditioned athletes. >> when you're trying to compete, especially the airborne sports, trying to do complicated tricks and you're waiting around at the top, like tonight for women's moguls. you've got a whole qualification round, then two super finals, that's a long night out in

exposure. some people are better at it than others so it's a factor. >> garvin thomas from south korea. and the olympic flame burning brightly in south korea as you can see. even in the daytime. plenty of medals handed out today. take a look at the updated medal count right now. germany has won two golds. norway, one gold. four silvers too. the netherlands, one gold and two silvers. the u.s. on the board with one medal and it is a gold. you saw it in primetime, look at this guy, 17 years old. this is red gerard, taking home gold in slope style snowboarding. this guy's wild. knocked off canadian favorites in the process. gerard spoke about all the emotions he's feeling right now. >> i'm feeling insane right now. it's honestly above me, i cannot believe what happened. i just want to land a run when i come out and that was enough for me, just to land the run. to get first is crazy. >> gerard is from colorado and

has more than a dozen family members in south korea cheering him on. congratulations. garvin's going to continue to bring us updates throughout the olympics on twitter, a great resource for a behind the scenes look at everything going on over there. and there's a lot. his handle is @garvinthomas. back at home, he was moments away from disaster. a driver barely escapes after his car gets stuck on the tracks leading to big delays for passengers. marianne favro was the first reporter on the scene and joins us with the details of what happened. >> reporter: firefighters say a driver was crossing these tracks when his car stalled and he jumped out of his car right before a train crushed his vehicle. fortunately the driver of the car was not hurt. hard to believe when you see his crumpled austin healy. the accident happened on watkins avenue shortly after 8:00 tonight. >> the train came through with no occupant in the vehicle,

struck the vehicle, carried it about 100 yards down the tracks, it then caught on fire. >> reporter: about 350 passengers were on board the cal train, which originated in san francisco. no passengers were hurt. more than 90 minutes after the accident, they were loaded onto another train and continued on to san jose. neighbors say this is not the first time a car has been hit at this intersection. in atherton, marianne favro, nbc bay area news. new video in, the chp investigating a deadly crash in the east bay. this happened just before 8:00 on 880 in oakland just south of 29. investigators say a man was walking on the shoulder when a car struck and killed him. two lanes were closed following that crash but they have since reopened. new details now about a stressful ride for passengers on a tour boat. that boat got stuck in the berkeley reef triggering a dramatic rescue. sergio quintana spoke with one of the passengers and the

operator of the boat now apologizing for what happened. >> reporter: the boat called "the osprey" had just left the berkeley marina around 2:00 this afternoon. one of the passengers aboard says they were ten minutes into the ride when they all felt a violent jolt as it got hung up on the reef. just before sunset, you could see "the osprey" with a rescue boat. the operator of the tour boat says they made a mistake on the water when they went over the berkeley reef at low tide. the reef well known, clearly marked. >> right out of the gate our operator made a bad decision in terms of where he was running the vessel for the day. >> reporter: i was able to talk to nancy levine who was aboard when they hit the reef. >> the jolt shook up pretty much everyone, a number of people -- some bodies went flying, chairs went flying. >> reporter: the first concern was major damage to the boat. >> initially there was question about whether water was going to start coming into the boat.

right away we put on life preservers. >> reporter: this is video of "the osprey" when it launched as a water taxi. the hull was not breached today and all 41 passengers were safely shuttled back to the berkeley marina by the coast guard. >> everybody's okay, minor bumps and bruises. >> reporter: the two-m hif ma-m stayed aboard until they were able to free it. once it was cleared, "the osprey" was towed to a repair yard in richmond. developing at this hour, a deadly helicopter crash in the grand canyon. this video just in. here's what we know. at least three people were killed, four injured. investigators say the helicopter was on a tour of the popular natural attraction when it crashed. it happened about 5:30 this evening. the company that owns the helicopter based out of las vegas. it was involved in another deadly crash in 2001.

the victims have not been identified. there's an investigation under way now into two mechanical issues on a spirit airlines plane. one of them involved a bay area-bound fly. the airlines grounded an airbus after an engine rattled in midair. the flight was forced to return to las vegas after takeoff. the same plane was involved in another malfunction just days before on a flight from ohio to florida. crew members in that incident became sick from fumes. faa says the two incidents are not related. we did reach out to spirit airlines tonight but have not heard back from the airliner yet. san jose's happy hollow zoo is a favorite spot but one mom's social media post led to stepped-up security there. the story you'll only see on nbc bay area. the incident happened on thursday as a woman and her toddler walked from the east parking lot to the pedestrian bridge. the woman says a homeless man talked about kidnapping and made sexually suggestive comments to her after she simply smiled at

him. now happy hollow has a parking lot monitor on control who's in communication with police and park rangers. san jose police will also step up patrols around those parking lots. family we spoke to say they are relieved. >> the place we bring our families to. we don't want to feel like this is another place we can't go. >> the lot is near what used to be a massive homeless epcampment called the jungle. the man who approached the woman has been banned from the park and could be arrested. people living near dolores park worry it's become a victim of its own success. sunny weather sent large crowds to the park. ever since renovation the park has become more popular than ever but also attracting troubles. there have been shootings and crowds leave trash behind. neighbors spent the day passing out garbage bags and collecting signatures. they want the see to devote extra resources to keep the park clean. >> it's a beautiful park. it's t
