pyeongchang, south korea. >> hey, everybody. thank you for joining us. it is 7:00 a.m., on a tuesday morning. 9:00 at night here at pyeongchang. you are looking at not only our awesome crowd, but some terrific athletes joining us on the plaza. >> we have great members of team usa. there's one member of team usa, that everybody is talking about. you want to hold your sign up? >> oh, yeah. you ready? >> yes. >> i got this. her dad gave it to me. >> we got it. >> i got it. >> it's chloe. she was amazing. and just moments ago, she got her gold medal. take a look at her face when they play our national anthem. you can just see it sinking in. this is a young lady with a gold medal and a heart of gold.

>> chloe kim just scooped up that medal. she is on a ride from the mountains. she is coming here. it takes a little bit to get here. we're waiting patiently for her. she was in the car and she had a message for savannah and myself. >> i'm in the car right now, on my way to you guys. i'm excited to see you both. let's have some fun. >> we cannot wait to see her and congratulate her in person. where we are, we're in olympic park which is down near the coa coast. just above us is where you find the sports like snowboarding and skiing. that's where chloe is on her way from. >> today, that's what we're talking about. we're talking about snowboarding. chloe cemented her place in these games. she is 17 years old. she's the youngest woman to win an olympic snowboarding medal.

we can't wait for her to get here and chat about that. >> she is not the only snowboarder to win some medal today. shaun white had two jaw-dropping runs, setting the stage for an 'pick final tonight. >> and talking about figure skating. the pairs competition will get under way. we have it all covered for you. we're starting with craig melvin who's got the latest. hey, craig. >> good morning to you. the snowboarders, dominated the mountain. from shaun white who we watched grow from a teenager into one of the world's most famous snowboarders to break-out star chloe kim who won is great olympic fashion. these riders are set to break more records in these games. >> boom, gigantic start.

>> reporter: chloe kim. living it up in the first run. surprising even herself. >> on her second run of three. >> reporter: after dropping into the pipe for her second attempt, the 17-year-old stumbled, but that did not stop her. her win becoming inevitable, after others faltered. >> slides out. >> reporter: still, all of the pressure didn't seem to phase kim, the california native taking time to tweet during the competition. writing, wish i had finished my breakfast sandwich. my stubborn self decided not to. now i'm getting hangry. kim, her final run for glory, soaring into the air and over the competition bringing home a gold medal. >> chloe kim reigns supreme in south korea. >> i worked so hard to get to this point. coming here and being able to land was my main goal. i'm happy i was able to do it.

>> reporter: standing on top of the podium as her teammate, aerial gold takes bronze. swept up by the emotion kim later tweeting again, i hate crying but i'll give myself a pass for this one. thank you everyone for the love. stoked to bring home the gold. >> oh, my lord, this is qualifying. >> reporter: for the men, shaun white, at his fourth olympic games, considered to be the elder statesman of snowboarding, continuing his battle to become king of the hill winning the qualifying round of the men's half pipe. >> shaun white has taken the lead in qualifying. >> reporter: scoring a 98.5 to edge scotty james out of the top spot for what is shaping up to be an epic final happening today. a two-time gold medalist, who finished a disappointing fourth

in sochi, white is looking to bring home more gold going head to head using some of the toughest tricks in the half pipe. >> people forget. they're like you made the olympics. i still have to qualify. >> reporter: meanwhile a horrifying crash on the huge track. emily sweeney losing control of her shred around curve nine, then careening all over the track. ten minutes after the crash sweeney walking toward the finish line battered, but not suffering from any broken bones. >> reporter: going back to chloe kim for a minute, her gold is the 99th for team u.s.a. in winter olympics history. not to jinx him, shaun white

she said, no, i'm still hungry. she shovelled down a piece of pizza while we were waiting to do the interview. her performance was so great. she had the gold locked up and threw down as good a run as you'll ever see. >> cherry on top. >> shaun white is crushing it in the prelims. what do you expect to happen when he's going for a medal. >> shaun white, gold in 2006. gold in 2010. off the podium in 2014. he came to our studio before. he is in a great place. he is just going for it. he had a run that qualified for the finals and he wanted to do better. he came out and did better. >> i was watching this live. i was watching your coverage. it's a qualifying round and all these guys are trying to one-up and outtrick one another. it was epic. >> it's like a competition broke out in qualifying. a lot of these guys are inspired by shaun white. he set a bar for them, he's an industry. he's still pushing them to be great which is awesome to watch.

>> thanks, ladies. russian athletes have a big presence in pyeongchang, even though their country was banned from the games after a wide spread doping scandal. kate snow has that part of the story. >> reporter: good morning. i'm standing where russian fans come to gather. here's the thing, it's not called the russian team this year. it's o.a.r., olympic athletes from russia. it's a small distinction. it is significant. the olympic committee back in 2017 suspended the russians from these games. they did allow for 168 athletes who passed their drug tests to come here and compete. here at the winter games, where national pride is always on display -- russian athletes have forced to tone it down. friday's ceremony, a stark contrast to four years ago, when

russian hosted the last olympics in sochi. >> no one had more to celebrate than russia. they cleaned up at home. >> reporter: back then, the home team winning more medals than any other country. here, in pyeongchang when figure skaters from russia won silver monday, the olympic flag was raised. only fans can raise the russian flag, not athletes. they're also wearing a generic uniform with an o.a.r. label. today, a married russian couple won bronze in curling. afterwards, they chose their words very carefully. >> they will not answer this question. >> reporter: their coach refusing to translate some of my questions. they're answer could violate olympic committee rules. they said of the people, they were for us and they felt it. the first russian to win a medal in speed skating went further. he said, i dedicate this medal to all of the guys that have been excluded from these games

in such a hard and unfairway. this medal is for you. >> russia has been banned from the winter olympics in korea. >> reporter: on sunday, the russian foreign minister insists that the russians were kept out of the games so the u.s. could win more medals. americans can no longer beat us in a fair sport struggle. weeks ago, vladimir putin acknowledged there were evidences of doping. he said the russian anti doping failed. >> this was a system of cheating. that cannot be stressed enough, that the evidence focuses not just on individuals, but rather a power structure. >> reporter: while athletes are trying not to ruffle feathers here, they do have a place that feels like home. countries often sponsor housing and gathering sports for athletes. this one is called the sports house. inside, it's all about russia and its champions. here at the sports house, the party is continuing.

there's a band playing inside. on a more serious note, they are taking doping seriously at these olympics and drug testing. they've tested a thousand athletes here. today for the very first time the case of alleged doping led to a japanese speed skater being suspended from the games. >> thank you so much. so much to get to. fresh fallout for the trump administration, with the scandals involving two former staffers. let's get to peter alexander live at the white house for us this morning. hi, peter, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you. the typically outspoken president is leaving it to others on his staff to express his support for the victims of domestic abuse. and we're hearing from rob porter's first wife, colby holderness. talking to sarah sanders, saying whether the president believes the accusers.

writing i expected a woman to do better. one week later, the white house defending the president's failure to publicly acknowledge the women who accused one of his most trusted aides, rob porter, of domestic abuse. sarah sanders rebutting criticism that her boss has yet to say those words himself. >> i spoke to him. he relayed that message directly to me and i'm relaying it to you. >> reporter: the president's comments sympathizing with porter, not his exwives. >> we wish him well. >> reporter: porter's first wife, colbie holderness, with an op-ed in "the post." titled rob porter is my ex-husband, here's what you should know about abuse. she writes, i never could have imagined myself in the situation i am in now. no one could have.
