the word i would use. perhaps it's inevitable. after what we saw tonight, it's hard to imagine michaela shuf rin isn't going to win many, many more gold medals. her first at these 2018 pyeonchang olympic games, the giant slalom. the best female skier on the planet came from behind after her first run passed the competition and promptly fell to her knees and wept. her best event slalom is just coming up tomorrow. shiffrin is in a place that bryce bennett would love to be one day. he had a very good showing for a 20-year-old at his first olympics in today's men's downhill. bryce told me moments after the race he is more focused on ever on getting back in four years but he said he made sure to savor this moment.

watch our live stream from your laptop or phone. >> our other top story, pure evil, that's how the governor of florida described the shooter. nikolas cruz, this is a photo of him being taken into custody. we're learning more about his victims and heart break over taking the town of parkland. 17 people are dead, 15 others hurt. ian cole joins us with stories of the heroes coming to light tonight. >> reporter: the sheriff says a high school football coach was killed. it's not clear if it's the same coach that will reportedly shielded students from the shooter. this story contains cell phone video from students when the shots rang out. it is disturbing to watch. >> video shows the moments shots were fired into a classroom just before the end of the day at marjory stoneman douglas high school in south florida.

the sheriff says the suspect was armed with a semi-automatic rifle. he pulled a fire alarm and targeted students as they ran out. >> i heard three or four shots or pops. >> we all realized it was real. we all started running. >> reporter: s.w.a.t. teams swarmed the school going classroom to classroom. the 19-year-old suspect nikolas cruz was caught an hour later. he was expelled last year for disciplinary reasons but he was attending another school in the district. >> he's just always been a crazy kid. i heard some people say one day he would have done this. annan foreign, i think that was today. >> reporter: tonight the fbi is assisting local authorities as they gather evidence at the school. the sheriff calling for action. >> you see something that's not right, you owe it to your family, your community and uh-oh it to law enforcement to make this a safer nation by calling up someone. tonight. >> reporter: the victims have not been identified as this community tries to heal.

nearly 2 million dreamers. the question now, will this plan get enough votes to pass. >> i think that's reprehensible and it should stop. >> an envelope containing white powder was sent to that law professor leading the effort to recall the judge who presided over the brock turner case. a hazmat team called in and a section of the school temporarily evacuated. we're at stanford university with more. that professor is okay. >> reporter: she is okay and she says she's actually used to getting some threats because she heads up that campaign to recall the superior court judge but getting this letter today that had powder inside was really a shock. >> terrible mistake. >> law professor michele daughter says she received a similar last week. it reads in part, since you're going to disrobe% ski, i'm going to disrobe you and treat you like emily doe. last week's letter contained

glitter, today's did not. >> there was white powder all in the nfl and all over it. we had both touched it. at that point i reported it to the department of public safety. >> reporter: dawber and her assistant were examined and the law school was temporarily shut down as hazardous materials teams swept several rooms. according to a statement from stanford, the powder was not harmful. dawber says this may be related to the effort to recall judge air% ski. his supporters have been increasingly an gressive. let's talk about his record and the issues and stop attacking people personally. that is creating the environment for these kinds of threats. >> i have no idea what she's talking about because all that our position has done is put out facts. >> reporter: retired superior court judge says aaron persky acted appropriately in the case. % ski has been criticized for sentencing turner to six months

in jail after being found guilty of three counts of felony assault. professor dawber does not believe anyone connected to the campaign supporting judge persky sent this letter. she says it was postmarked from boston. sergio quintana, nbc bay area area news. >> a day after san francisco radio personality made sexually explicit comments about chloe kim, he was fired. here is what he had to say say about that dismissal. >> she's hot as hell. if she was 1, you wouldn't be ashamed to say she's a little hot piece of ass. >> former now former knbr radio host patrick conner made those comments on sirius. this afternoon, cumulus fired conner. he feels remorse and he's embarrassed. he went on to adenos he insulted chloe kim and now she's is an

awesome athlete. >> new at 11:00 this bay area school bus driver facing felony charges of child abuse. this involves special needs children. terry mcsweeney joins us with the details in vaccaville. >> reporter: that 64-year-old woman driving the school bus allegedly got rough with the 7-year-old when the little girl refused to get off the school bus. so rough that the second grader was injured. it happened here at browns valley elementary school last week. as special needs children were being cropped off, one 7-year-old refused to leave the bus. video shows the driver forcefully grab add the girl. >> physically we gan to move her around the bus. at one point the child is down on her buttocks and the driver is forcing her knees up against the student. >> reporter: the child had scratches on her back and ribs. the driver kim klopson booked into jail today for felony child

the 17-year-old palo alto native is not a medal favorite but he includes so many quad jumps in his program. if he lands them cleanly, he could post a big score and surprise some people. as a first-time olympian, he says the whole experience has been incredible. beginning the moment he walked off the ice after his last practice. >> as i was skating off the ice, i suddenly stopped and it was like, i'm headed out to the olympics. it just kind of hit me and i mean, i'm having one of those moments right now. it's just like wow, i'm really here. this is really happening. >> reporter: believe it or not, zhou is not the only palo alto native who is competing in a short time here at the pyeonchang olympics. joann roid who is a by at

through the afternoon for tomorrow. that's going to help temperatures warm up. the other thing we'll notice is kind you have breezy out of the northwest at 12 in the south bay. humidity lowering. the air will be drier increasing fire danger. humidity down to 22%. of 3 in cupertino and 66 in san jose. alameda county, 67 tomorrow in concord. that be a noticeable increase and 64 in hayward. sunshine continuing right over to the coast. half moon bay at 60. palo alto 65, san mateo 63. san francisco cooler here but beautiful day. lots of sunshine. if you're here visiting, probably couldn't have asked for better weather this time of the year. right throughout the north bay, 65 in napa. chilly in pt. reyes at 59 my extended forecast keeps sunshine dry weather through sunday. temperatures down to 54 on sunday. winds up 20 to 40 mice per hour.

been found. a bizarre story continues to unfold after six days of searching, a missing skier in new york has been found in sacramento. danny was reported missing last week. his belongings were at a ski lodge in new york and his car was in that parking lot in new york. hundreds of volunteers spent countless hours combing the mountain there for him. yesterday he was found disoriented in sacramento wearing the same ski clothes. investigators say he has no idea

korea. her quest began today with the giant slalom. second after her first run, she went second to last in run two, blazing speed to the top of the mountain. that was the difference. shiffrin nearly flawless throughout and takes the gold by almost .4 second. he'll go for gold again tomorrow in the slalom. potential gold medal preview in women's hockey, u.s. and canada, despite being outshot by the americans, canada would take the lead into the final period. kendal gets the u.s. on the board 23 seconds into the third. the u.s. empties their net late. closing seconds so close to punching it in, you could argue they played a more complete game. canada wins its 23rd straight game at the olympics. the americans move into the semifinal. a look at the current medal count, germany and norway lead the way with 13 each. as for the united states, in fifth place, thanks to shiffrin with eight. we're back with more news right
