there, the olympic cauldron over here, garvin over here and all the action everywhere. >> it's friday night in pyeongchang so of course they're out celebrating. >> looks really nice. yeah, we're going to -- oh, it looked like lightning, too, but i guess that was the fireworks. >> that's the meteorologist in you. >> we will let you know anything else. >> here it's all clear, no fireworks going on. you probably wouldn't want that to wake you up and get you out of bed, either, on a friday morning. but our temperatures very chilly. only in the low to mid 30s for the inland areas and that morning drive throughout the east bay will start out in the low 40s today reaching up to 60 degrees at noontime. it will be another nice day to take lunch outside. as we head over to mike you're tracking a new crash in san jose. it sounds like it's not a major issue. let's take you out to the south bay because as you see from this big look at the bay we have no major problems as far as the sensor colors, everything is

green pretty much as you drive down the freeways. looking for any change but none shows up. north 680 around jackson avenue there is a little fog to the north there. a smooth drive. easy flow throughout the south bay. ace train number 1 reportedly there is some sort of signal problem so it hasn't even left the tracy area just yet. we will foe this and let you know if this is going to be a persistent problem for this train and the subsequent trains out of the area, but that's the only issue showing up for mass transit. parkland, florida, residents simply trying to grasp what unfolded there this week with the death of 17 people in that shooting rampage. this as investigators now say that that suspect has confessed. last night thousands attended a vigil last night in parkland, they remembered the victims, including the football coach, a future college swimmer and a national merit scholarship finalist. that devastation felt in the entire city. in the school a lot of the

students calling for the school leaders to make a change. >> now is the time for us to enact some common sense gun laws in this country. >> investigators are revealing more about the 19-year-old suspect. they say he took an uber to the school he once attended with a legally purchased assault rifle hidden in his duffle bag. that suspect is also now on suicide watch. president trump is expected to visit parkland tomorrow. on our website and app this morning hear from local students who held their own vigil for the victims in florida. we also spoke with a former fbi agent explaining why the agency could not take action after the shooter's youtube post. locally happening today parents will rally at a south bay school to try to stop construction of portable classrooms. they fear it will add more students to campus they say already busting at the seams. we are talking about don

callejon school. sharon katsuda joins us live this morning and parents say this isn't just about overcrowding, they say it's about equity as well. >> reporter: that's right, laura. good morning. some parents contacted the nbc bay area investigative unit saying they believe the district is overcrowding this school just to keep test scores higher at other middle schools in the district. now, parents at don callejon school say that instead of putting more portables on their seven-acre campus behind me the district should open enrollment at other middle schools and pay for the busing for students to get them there. they say by overcrowding one campus they are failing to meet the needs of underperforming students and they are accusing the district of doing this on purpose as a way to keep test scores higher at other campuses. >> for some reason they're choosing to make the student population at this -- at don cal onmiddle school their density to be almost ten times of that of

the student population density at the highest performing school. >> there is a 200 person wait list at peterson. i say why is there a wait list? they have all kinds of property to put portables on. shouldn't everybody have portables, especially if they have more space. >> now, here is a look at santa clara unified student density. at peterson middle school there are 18 students per acre compared with don callejon which has 134 students per acre. buchser middle has 32 and cab joe has 37. they say this was not an easy decision for the board to make, however, the sentiment expressed by the board was to avoid displacing students to middle school sites further away from their homes and felt this was the best and most fair interim solution. now, the district is planning additional buildings by 2020. today's rally is scheduled for 7 7:55 this morning. i'm sharon katsuda.

"today in the bay." 5:04. now to the olympics where fears of norovirus came through for the swiss ski team. talk about a heartbreaking turn for the athletes. one of them became an internet sensation at the sochi games after posting a video of himself, you've probably seen this, he was holding on to the outside rail of that escalator as he rode all the way up. >> it's pretty funny to watch there. poor guy, though, got sick. "today in the bay's" garvin thomas live in pyeongchang. there were unexpected results as well for team u.s.a. >> reporter: well, yeah, laura and unexpected not in a good way. fourth place in the olympics is an amazing accomplishment, the problem is when you're mikaela shiffrin the best female skier on the planet not landing on the podium that's a bit of a shocker and she landed in fourth in her best event the slalom. figure skating, they say you can't win a medal in the short

program but you can lose one and that looks like what nathan chen might have done, stumbling through his program and falling all the way to 17th place going into the free skate. who is still standing? well, adan rippon is, very proudly, as a matter of fact. rippon who skated well in the team event helping the u.s. win a bronze skated with his trademark showmanship and wowed the crowd in pyeongchang finishing a respectable seventh place going into tomorrow's free skate. his mom telling us no matter what happens he is already a winner. >> i don't think he would trade in the standing ovation on the first time of olympic ice for any -- a medal of any color, but so proud of him. that is something that he will have as a symbolic reminder, you know, for the rest of his life. >> reporter: you know what, palo alto's vincent zhou gets to keep, the first person to execute a quadruple lutz in an olympic competition.

13, netherlands with 12 and the u.s.a. with eight. and right now at 5:08 i wanted to show you how cold it is where garvin is nearby. it's only 32 degrees. it's friday night there, it's 10:07. in squaw valley it is 27 degrees at 5:07 and highs reaching into the mid 40s. in pyeongchang it will be in the mid 30s today. we are looking at some slightly warmer temperatures over the next few days and that may be something they will be talking about as you watch the olympics. here we are talking about this warm weather reaching into the upper 60s this afternoon. how about that, 69 degrees in san jose and napa, 68 in santa rosa and 66 today in livermore. san francisco and oakland 63 degrees. we will go straight to squaw valley in about four minutes, but, mike, you were tracking something new in danville.

looking over here the south bay shows slowing for 85 that just popped up. i'm going to track down anything that might be going on. no reports about that, but we do have a new report over here in danville as kari said. the off ramp might be affected by a crash there, just the off ramp. no slowing on the speeds for the 680 northbound or southbound through that area. we will continue to track that one report and a little slowing showed up right here, highway 13 at broadway. it was there for about three minutes, just cleared. i think they've removed the overnight construction. that's great news getting ready for that morning commute to the bay bridge. 5:09. all new this morning, a major surprise for moviegoers across the bay area. plus firing back, actor jeffrey tambor's message after being fired after sexual assault allegations. in tech we trust, maybe not.

underregulated and don't trust tech. tech was allowed to run pretty free during the president obama years and that's turning around because the nominee for the federal trade commission says he will take a special interest in tech. during his senate heard joe simons says he's open to investigating google and facebook if they use their power inappropriately. peter thiel apparently no longer trusts silicon valley. the conservative apparently moving to l.a., this according to a private source speaking to the "wall street journal." he recently said silicon valley is a one-party state. two can afford several homes in the bay area, rest of us not so much. the association of realtors says you need a salary of $303,000 to afford the median home in the city of san francisco. the median price of a home is $1.5 million. so with 20% down and current interest rates, laura and

release for marvel's "black panther" is a highly anticipated film with a mostly black cast. all new overnight several bay area moviegoers got a big surprise. >> that's right. start to the weekend but by the end of the weekend it is going area. we do have a clean sweep as we get a live look at our storm ranger. we can move it around if we had any storms to track, but as of right now you know that it's going to be all quiet. as we look at our temperatures now as you get ready to head out the door in the middle of the screen looking at the peninsula our current temperature 41 degrees and in the tri-valley look at that, only 33. 33 also in the north bay and the seven-day forecast is up at the bottom of the screen. our highs today will be topping out in the upper 60s in east san jose and 68 degrees in walnut creek and oakland today 63 degrees. we will be up to 66 in san mateo and san francisco up to 64 degrees in the marina district and north bay near 70 degrees. we will stay just below it, but i think we will hit 70 degrees tomorrow. we are kicking off the weekend, maybe we're celebrating the

lunar new year in san jose at east ridge mall. this one will be a nice one, the weather is going to be perfect, temperatures in the upper 60s and cooling down quickly as we get into the evening. so wear something to bundle up. if you are in san francisco you can check out the year of the dog art show in hayes valley. that will be going on between 1:00 and 5:00 this afternoon. a little bit cooler there with those temperatures in the low 60s. i talked about the changes for the weekend. by saturday during the afternoon the winds are going to start to pick upcoming in from the west and by sunday morning you can possibly hear that wind just howling out there. as the temperatures drop those winds are going to be sustained at near 30 miles per hour and it's going to be much colder heading into the start of next week. still not looking at a lot of rain here, but there will be the potential that the far north bay could have some light snow flurries falling on monday morning so that's something to watch. staying in the mid 50s throughout much of next week. mike, you were saying a great start to the friday commute. >> it is because you wake up and

you're like, hey, it's friday and then you look at the roadways. look at some speed sensors, it's friday for sure. over here the one issue we are tracking as far as maybe an issue for traffic, the off ramp at diablo road from northbound 680. reports of activity there from a crash but it's not affecting the freeway there. if you're heading through the east bay, no problems for the tri-valley. 580 moves basically at speed out of the altamonte, a slil slowing off the merge with 205 and 580. a look at the bay bridge toll plaza where traffic is very light. no problems. free flowing. we typically see the metering lights turned on about now monday through thursday. i will swing the camera around and see if we can see any backup on the incline. doesn't look like much of a problem and fridays tend to see a later build here. back to you. next and new this morning, protecting renters. overnight we are going through a new proposal tackling the housing crisis. the option it would give you.

area .. are introducing welcome back. california lawmakers including several from the bay area are introducing measures aimed at protecting renters from eviction. landlords would face tougher thresholds to evict, requiring them to present just cause. tenants would have more opportunity to meet rental commitments before facing eviction. another bill would expend the eviction notice periods to a full year rather than the

drive for this friday. new this morning at 5:31 a suspected car thief is in serious condition. the santa rosa police just posted these images of that crash. it happened a little after midnight. police say the suspect stole the car and neighboring witnesses decided to follow him. that car struck seven parked vehicles at high speed and the driver was elected. the injuries are not life-threatening. >> at 5:32, an emotional and tear-filled night in florida. candles lighting up the night in parkland. thousands turn out to lean on each other after the school shooting that left 17 people dead. look at all the people that turned out for this. such a sad occasion. "today" show's gabe gutierrez is in parkland, florida, with more. >> reporter: good morning. new court documents reveal that 19-year-old nikolas cruz confessed to police that he was

the gunman that shot up marjory stoneman douglas high school in parkland, florida, killing 17 people. questions are swirling about whether warning signs were missed. as we learn new details about the timeline we're also hearing from one student who says he came face-to-face with cruz just moments before the massacre. this student says that he ran into cruz just a few moments before cruz opened fire. he says that he was warned and he says, quote, things were about to get messy and that's when he bolted in the other direction. authorities are releasing a new timeline that lays out how this massacre unfolded. they say that cruz came to this school in an uber that afternoon and then went floor to floor shooting at several classrooms and then going to a nearby walmart after he ditched his weapon and blended in with some of the students. authorities say he went to a walmart and stopped for a drink inside a subway restaurant before less than an hour later

he was captured by police. still more details coming out as this investigation unfolds. guys, back to you. >> so disheartening. thank you very much, gabe. still ahead this morning survivors say the nightmares will continue for a long time. we will hear from them at 6:00 a.m. at 6:30 we will take you back live to florida. at 7:00 the "today" show shares some memories of those who died. oakland unified schools will conduct a drill today meant to simulate the response if there was an active shooter on one of its campuses. educators will be trained in a special system designed to pinpoint the incident early on and act quickly once it happens. that drill begins at 9:00 this morning. a parents' fear come true. police have arrested a teacher for a number of crimes involving children. >> bob redell is live. it is the parents that first notified the authorities. >> reporter: correct.

good morning, marcus and laura. parents here at willow glen middle school became suspicious of track and field coach clifford pappadakis when they say they saw him taking pictures of female students that was back in september. this week he was charged with a crime. on wednesday pappadakis turned himself into san jose police and now faces seven counts of annoying and molesting a child which is a misdemeanor and one count of possession of child pornography which is a felony. pappadakis is 47 years old, a husband and father himself. used to teach pe and coach track and field at willow glen middle school. was known as coach p. to parents and students. the district placed him on administrative leave when parents reported him back in september and started its own investigation which prompted the police response. pd tells us investigators found a number of inappropriate images after searching pappadakis' home, computer and other electronic devices. here is one man who lives here

pappadakis. >> he has been a real good neighbor, real nice guy, no indication of any of that. >> reporter: it's not clear why charges weren't filed until now, this week, even though authorities were first aware of the alleged crimes back in early september. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, bob. happening later today updated numbers on what so far has been a brutal flu season across the u.s. and here in california. the cdc says influenza is killing 4,000 americans per week but the late state public health report suggested flu activity in california is decreasing. the state reported 185 flu related deaths this season involving people under 65 years old. of those 37 have been in the bay area. a live look in san francisco. it looks like voters there will decide on a measure that would raise $150 million for education

and child care services every year. that measure would boost teacher salaries and expand eligibility for affordable child care. it would be paid for by tax hike linked to gross revenues earned by businesses and landlords. according to the examiner in two weeks supporters have collected half the signatures needed to qualify for that june ballot. former san francisco mayor willie brown's daughter sydney is 16 years old but that's not stopping her from right now trying to launch her pop music career. ♪ >> two weeks ago she released her debut single and she's combining it as a fundraising effort for the north bay wildfire victims. that single is called "love is stronger than smoke and fire." she posted this video of the song on youtube.?eo sydney is not yet on a major music label, but she is working with a grammy winning producer and she has appeared in numerous

bay area musical theater productions. good luck to her. and it's going for a great cause there. and i think willie brown might be able to help her get the word out about whatever she's doing. looking over here i want to get the word about the san mateo bridge. i just heard about a motorcycle crash on this flat section. see the brake lights lighting up here as you're traveling westbound. chp just says the motorcycle crash, a couple other vehicles involved and the motorcycle driver was reportedly up and walking around. that is good initial news, but obviously a big backup here. this will be a factor. let's look at your map. this is the westbound san mateo bridge right there, we're seeing the sensors starts to slow. already unexpected slow for a friday. plan on using the dumbarton bridge for the time being. we will get more detail from chp as they arrive or the bridge crew. that service lane which will help a lot. a quick traffic break planned southbound 680 down toward the scene of some plastic pails in

the roadway. south of the walnut creek interchange. we are looking at a smooth drive throughout the east bay with the green travel times. >> looking good for friday. >> except for the san mateo bridge. >> except for that. we are just trying to coast right into the weekend because it's friday and it's going to be a nice weekend, especially saturday. that will be your day to make outdoor plans. for the inland areas 70 degrees, the bay will be at 66 degrees and sunshine with the coast at 62 degrees. sunday, this may be your day to go to the movies or do something inside. it's going to be in the upper 50s inland, those winds will be gusting and at times we could have those sustained gusts at about 30 miles per hour with higher gusts. so that's going to cause some issues. it's going to be all good for this lunar new year community day event in san jose. we will see those highs reaching

up to 71 degrees. so just perfect out there. right in the middle of the day with all of that sunshine. on sunday in santa barbara that's when the temperatures start to cool down so you will probably enjoy your time out there. at 67 degrees on saturday and the warmest day will actually be today. lake shasta will be cooling down as well. we will go from 60 degrees tomorrow to 40 degrees on sunday. but at least it will be all dry there. that will not be the case for yosemite will that snow will start coming down and the high temperature will only be 32 degrees. it will be nice to see that snow in parts of the sierra, we are looking at the possibility of 48 -- four to eight inches there. and in napa valley we will go from 69 degrees tomorrow to 59 degrees on sunday with some gusty winds. let me know what you're doing this weekend, i'm @karihallweather on twitter, also on facebook and instagram. i will have a look at today's temperature trend that's coming up in about three minutes.

immediate closure. the health department revisited northgate thursday morning and the building was found to be clean and in compliance with all safety standards. also new this morning, parents are looking for options after it announced that e.l. crystal elementary school in a san bruno will close. the board is looking to close the school at the end of the academic year in june. we reached out to officials to see if rolling wood elementary school is also still on the chopping block. we are still waiting for an update on what the school board's decision for that campus is. the district is closing the shortfalls. the daca debate has turned into a disaster. >> scott mcgrew, no one seems to be able to agree on anything. >> on anything. dreamers, marcus, have checked their calendar, they know without me saying there's 17 days left until the president's deadline. nothing is working in the senate. even a bipartisan bill not able to raise the votes it needs and

the president says he would have vetoed that bill anyway. so there are four possible plans on daca, that called rounds king, that's the one daca kids would like best. it's dead. an older one by mccain and coons never made it past the planning stage. there was one by pat toomey, that one, no way, and donald trump had his own ideas he routed those through chuck grassley from iowa. that one got very few votes. all of these are dead. it's looking grim. donald trump could just reinstate daca, he is the one who set the deadline, but we don't expect that to happen, either. here we see the president yesterday afternoon as he spoke about the latest school shooting. he says he will visit that high school during his weekend trip to florida. republican mitt romney delayed his announcement he's running for senate out of respect for those shooting victims and this morning made

the announcement for real via a tweet. romney of course a frequent critic of the president. another trump critic former fbi director james comey says his new book is coming out april 21st. trump fired comey, even admits it was because comey was investigating the white house connection to russia. comey's firing backfired, it created the special counsel. speaking of the special counsel, cnn is reporting rick gates the former trump campaign adviser was made a deal with robert mueller turning states evidence. if that is indeed the case it would mean there are three major trump advisers who are now on mueller's side. we check everything that's going on in the white house every morning and then we tell you all about it on twitter as well. follow me @scottmcgrew. happening today the buffalo soldiers will be honored at the presidio in san francisco. the four all black u.s. army units were stationed there.

we're good. we are starting out with cold temperatures this morning and a clean sweep as we get a look at storm ranger our mobile doppler radar. nothing going on here. it is another all clear and dry start. look at these temperatures, it is so cold, now just one degree above freezing in santa rosa, livermore and in morgan hill. low 40s for much of the inland parts of the bay area. now, we are going to start to see those temperatures warming up fairly quickly into the upper 60s today. up to 66 in antioch, 69 in san jose and san francisco, oakland 63 degrees, 69 today in napa. the seven-day forecast is up at the bottom of the screen and you will see how those temperatures will drop off after the next couple of days. as you are getting dressed this morning you do need layers and i'm talking about a scarf or a hat, also a coat and something nice and warm later on today. i think you will be comfortable with short sleeves and pants, also boots would be a good option and we are going to have some cool definitely winterlike weather over the next couple of

days. i wanted to talk about our rainfall deficit and how we're doing for this water year. santa rosa we've measured still about 13 inches of rain, just a little bit less than 13 inches, but we are lacking about 11 inches of rain there so our rainfall deficit is at 53% of normal. oakland has gotten about 7 inches of rain there and we still are missing about 5 inches. for san jose we got close to five inches of rain, but we are now missing about five inches of rain so we are only at 48% of normal. we are doing the worst there. unfortunately as we go through this forecast still looking at some very dry not only dry but cold weather and some gusty winds as an area of low pressure moves just to the east of us. it will be just enough to bring some scattered snowshowers to the sierra and a slight chance of some light snow in the farther northern parts of the bay area. for the north bay, but just really cold heading into next week. you can see those high temperatures at the bottom of the screen as we look at our

seven-day forecast. mostly clear skies, look at those mornings, even in san francisco we will drop down into the upper 30s. i'm land areas will most likely have freezing temperatures and that's going to be a big concern because we have had everything blooming under this very warm weather we have had recently. watch out for the potential of some of those sensitive plants being damaged. inc. mao, you spotted a problem on the san mateo bridge. >> i did, then i might have spotted the solution. i saw a tow truck traveling down this service lane, remember, these were added years ago, this is why, everybody jammed up here they can still get to the issue. there were flashing lights over in the median and i did see some folks moving around with some lights there as well as a tow truck arrived and it looks like traffic is starting to move a little better. this is westbound 92, the san mateo bridge heading over toward the foster city side. on the maps we will show you there is still slowing that shows up right around the toll plaza over to that scene. there is a build, more folks coming down 880. now, they may hear about this here or on the radio perhaps and then you can head over to the

to pull that driver over when they saw her driving erratically. several times during that chase that driver parked for a moment before speeding off again. that driver also weaved through highway traffic at high speeds with her lights off. very dangerous there. at one point that driver collided with another car and quickly sped away from the crash. eventually that driver was cornered by police after driving down a dead-end road. that's when she drove into a pair of police vehicles. police then swarmed that car and took that driver into custody. making worldwide headlines, the trial debt has been set for "el chapo" who is also known for escaping prisons. a new york judge has set his trial to begin in september. joaquin guzman is accused of running an international drug trafficking operation and for playing a major role in a drug war that has taken thousands of lives. yesterday guzman tried to address the court apparently to ask his family to pay for his legal fees, but the judge denied
