now. >> yeah, today is the last day we're going to see the 60s and 70s, and then we will bring back more february win her continue like temperatures. 44 degrees, the peninsula 42. the trivalue, a very cold 36. san francisco waking up to about 47 degrees. the east bay now, nice and chilly at about 41 degrees. now, your temperature trend for today once again will be rather mild and fairly warm in some spots. so look at fremont. fremont at about 2:00 will be maxing out, topping out into the upper 60s at about 69 degrees. if you notice in the icons, though, plenty of sunshine. so the sunshine isn't going anywhere for today. the highs will be into the 60s and upper 60s for san jose, 69. and near concord and antioch, also san jose, don't be surprised if we do end up hitting that 70-degree mark. today is going to be the last day for those mild, warmer conditions. because this cold air blast is

quickly going to seep on in. and what's going to happen is, it's going to drop our temperatures down. believe it or not, by about 10, 15 degrees in some spots. which means tomorrow's daytime highs will only be in the 50s. not only that, but the system is also expected to bring some good amount of snow to the sierra. so i'll talk about that, too. >> well, that's good news. but, yeah, going from the 70s, which we were so used to at the beginning of the month, really enjoying t. i'm getting over a little bit of a cold. >> yeah, vicki has got to get better and tomorrow here comes the cold air blast. >> vianey, thank you so much. well, a man has been taken into custody after a shootout with san francisco police. it happened near the sill ma district of san francisco. witnesses say they heard about 30 shots fired. police say the suspect was involved in a deadly shooting earlier in the evening, and when they caught up to him, they say he refused to surrender and get out of an rv. that's when the shots were exchanged. the man was taken to san francisco general with non life-threatening wounds. more details now. police say that this all started

with a deadly shooting near golden gate park last night. sfpd says that man shot two people during an argument, then carjacked the toyota 4-runner and took off. that happened in the panhandle near oak and schrader, about 6:30. one person died. the other person is in critical condition. have you seen this man? he is suspected of killing his grandparents. now san francisco police think he may be hiding out near one of the city's most popular tourist spots. today in the bay has more from aquatic park near where the suspect may have been spotted. >> reporter: this is 45-year-old harlan fox, according to san francisco police. he was spotted january 10th in a part of the city best known for chocolate and cable cars. police say he is an outdoorsman and may be camping in a city park or wooded area. this is video of rural macintosh county near tulsa, oklahoma, where sheriffs deputies were called after the bodies of an 81-year-old man and 84-year-old

woman were found by a jogger in the area. >> we don't have any reports of any missing folks at this time, which, you know, it's thanksgiving. and i'm figuring some folks would end up missing them before too long. >> reporter: oklahoma investigators identified them as his grandparents. he was wanted for questioning, but has not been seen since. authorities in oklahoma say he may be driving a white, late-model oldsmobile like this. he was recently released from state prison. he served time for convictions on weapons charges. he's considered armed and dangerous. in san francisco, nbc bay area news. it wasn't your average trip to 7-eleven. this car, check it out there, crashed right through the front doors of that store. this happened in union city, the 7-eleven near chavez middle school. thankfully, no one was hurt. the driver, police say, was not under the influence. must have just gotten the gas and brakes confused. now we're going to take you to a developing story in

southern mexico. a magnitude 7.2 earthquake rattled the country. this is video inside of a newspaper office. the lights, you can see there, shaking violently outside the lamp post where swaying from the earthquake. the epicenter was about 225 miles south of mexico city in the state of oaxaca. in spite of the strength of the quake, so far there are only reports of minimal damage that could be thanks to an early warning alarm system. [ alarm sounding ] millions of people were alerted by that warning. you heard the sigh learns there. they also got alerts on their phones that gave people time to evacuate from buildings. the program is being developed here in california and right now being used in some schools, health care and emergency facilities. agencies like b.a.r.t. are also using that early alert system so that a train can be stopped before the shaking begins. >> because we feel like those have the biggest impacts for the public.

>> the early warning alert is not yet widespread here like it is in mexico. it also may be a little less effective, because so much of the bay area sits close to active fault lines. our warnings may only give us seconds to prepare, not minutes. okay. ♪ we're going to turn now to the 2018 winter olympics in pyeongchang, south korea. a live look now at the olympic flame. the competition has been fast and fierce. today will be another chance for our local athletes to go for gold. however, it was another tough go our jay gray is live this morning inside olympic park in pyeongchang, with a closer look at the action. jay, some of this was eight years in the making. >> reporter: yeah, no, you're absolutely right, vicki. always good to talk. and tough, tough, tough go for lindsey vonn in the mountains. just didn't get the draw that she wanted.

and finishes a bit shorter than she would have liked. and nathan chen, what do you say? this guy has the skate of his life. still just doesn't reach the podium. >> out comes lindsey vonn, down the super g hill. >> first out of the gate in the super g, lindsey vonn's debut, anything but golden. >> that's the thing with running number one, you're not able to see the other racers go. you don't know what the speeds are. i did the best i could with the information i had. and at least i'm not fourth. i'm actually happier to be fifth than fourth. >> reporter: she'll have two more chances at first in the combined downhill. ♪ on the ice, after a fall during the short program, redemption for nathan chen during his preskate, which included a history-making six quad jump attempts and a personal best score. but no medal. >> just wasn't enough to clinch a podium spot. but proud of my long program. was able to win the long, actually, so that's a big accomplishment for me. >> reporter: today in prime time, the first run in men's

giant slalom, as the americans search for a way back to the medal podium. yeah, and let's talk a little bit more about nathan chen. this is a guy who came in, 18 years old, his first olympics. and probably was a little nervous in that short program. but what a skate he had in the final. literally jumping with those quads from 17th to 5th in the finals. and comes off the ice very confident. much more confident than when he came here. >> all right, jay. thank you so much for that wrap-up. really appreciate it. and it looks a lot less windy where you are today. so that should bode well for the sport. >> reporter: thanks. >> all right, jay, we'll talk to you in a little bit. palo alto's vincent joe had a strong showing himself. thursday night, becoming the first person ever to land a quadruple lutz. it is his first olympics, and he is also the youngest member of team usa. joe finished sixth overall. the 17-year-old was not expected to medal this time around, but he certainly came close.

granted. not walnut creek police officer, tom brown. >> i was bed-ridden for about two months. >> reporter: brown is lucky to be back behind the wheel of his patrol car. 19 months ago, he was involved in a head-on collision. a hit and run suspect trying to get away, turning his car towards brown, giving him seconds to brace himself. >> when we hit, the force was so great that my car spun out and slammed into a parked truck. >> reporter: the suspect tried to escape. shayna, the now-retired police dog, stopped him. but not before she was stabbed in the face and neck. the dog survived. brown had to have multiple surgeries, requiring 52 staples in his leg. >> teaching my body how to walk again was certainlyqs;.[ a chal. >> reporter: a challenge his colleagues are happy he accepted. >> he always has a positive attitude. he's a hard worker. >> always take the job seriously. but don't take yourself too serious.

police say security will be stepped up chinese new year celebrations are under way in san francisco. police say security will be stepped up for big celebrations, including next saturday's parade with extra officers on the streets. the office of emergency services is urging people who plan to ring in the year of the dog to sign up for special emergency text alerts in san francisco. a lot of people think that is a good idea. >> i think that's kind of good. because, like, a lot of outsiders are coming to the city. like, better to be prepared than not. >> you can sign up by texting lunar sf to 888-777. the police department says it is anticipating a safe parade. one of the most popular parks in san francisco might be shut down for close to a year. washington park in north beach is undergoing major renovations. phase one means updating of the children's playground that will include keeping the grass from flooding as it does now after heavy rains. most of the park will be closed for nine to twelve months.

during a recent meeting with city representatives, neighbors asked if the renovation could be done in different pieces, so the entire park wouldn't be shut down for so long. they are also asking for alternative spaces to use during that renovation. nbc bay area responds to a walnut creek man whose bad hard drive stoked fears of extortion and identity theft. consumer investigator, chris chmura has his unusual case. >> reporter: good morning. this man feels as though he's being blackmailed, all because he challenged a business that was supposed to help him. david platte paid a hard drive recovery company more than $300 to pull data off his hard drive after it crashed. but the company didn't recover the files he asked for. so david called his bank and disputed the charge. he won. but then the hard drive company threatened to sell david's data to get its money. >> immediately, i thought, this is what extortion feels like.

that is up and scanning in our parking lot right now where you see the red sweep. we've got a brand-new stormranger, exclusive to us, also telemundo will be using it, as well. and as soon as that system kind of starts rolling on in, stormranger will be right there to capture the latest radar with the best view. now healdsburg right now, very cold. 35 degrees. but look at the skies. nice and clear out there. which is kind of why we're seeing an array of temperatures. so we still have that ridge of high pressure that's holding on tight over the bay area for one more day. and we've also got kind of some 48 degrees warmer spots, milder spots in san francisco, santa rosa, 35. napa, 34. and today's high, it will once again be slightly warmer. but more seasonable than what we have seen the past couple days. as i mentioned, we have the ridge of high pressure sitting over the bay area. today is the last day for that. antioch, 67 degrees. concord, 68. oakland, 66. san jose, a high of 69.

now let's talk about this futurecast, because i had mentioned that we were tracking a storm system, so what exactly does that mean in terms of showers? well, if i fast forward this time line into the overnight hours and early tomorrow morning, you notice we start seeing a couple of these showers popping up. but mainly along the coastline. so the best chance to see a couple of showers will be along the coastline, half moon bay, possibly along the peninsula, and for the santa cruz mountains, as well. so the higher elevation areas. but look at this snow that's packing up here near south lake tahoe, kirkwood. futurecast. this is taking us through sunday at about 10:30. look at all of that snow. so this is definitely going to be a cold front that's going to bring a cold arctic blast. and what's also going to be kicking up are those winds. talking about wind gusts, possibly between 20 and 40 miles per hour in some zones. so sunday at about 2:30, look how the winds start picking up. santa rosa, 23 miles per hour. san francisco, 22. and if i take you through the evening hours into sunday, santa

rosa, 31 miles per hour. san jose, 20-plus. and as you can imagine, along the coastline and into the higher elevation areas, you can expect even gustier conditions. so exactly how much snow are we expecting from this system? well, look at this. this is estimated snow, and this is taking us through sunday. we're talking about eight to ten possibly inches of brand-new snow for this year. a much-needed up there. we have had a very dry february so far. they haven't been getting too much snow. but with the snow and cold front also expected to see some very gusty conditions, we're talking dangerously gusty. look at this. 48 degrees -- or 48 -- excuse me. 48 miles per hour, tahoe city, 50 miles per hour much and as far as that time line goes, those winds are expected to continue very gusty. not just for tomorrow, but also into monday morning. over the next seven days, a look at what we can expect. sunday and monday. i do have the showers in there, but i want to kind of put it into perspective that it's mainly going to be along the coastline and peninsula. one thing that will be

last night -- of wednesday )s president trump and the first lady visiting the victims of last night's -- i'm sorry, last night of wednesday's mass shooting at a high school near fort lauderdale. mr. and mrs. trump praised the medical staff for keeping nine victims alive. then they went to the sheriff's office to thank first responders. 14 students, the athletic director and a coach and geography teacher were all killed. the suspect is in custody. we have new details on that teenager charged in wednesday's deadly shooting at a florida high school. he was an air rifle marksmanship

program that was paid for by an nra grant. the program was part of its multimillion dollar effort to support youth shooting clubs. also, the first of 17 funerals following wednesday's massacre. some of the victims as young as 14, and as we said, two coaches and a teacher were also among those killed. as for the investigation, a rare admission from the fbi. the bureau says it dropped the ball. last month, a person close to the suspect, nikolas cruz, called the fbi tip line to warn the feds about his violent behavior and thoughts. the agency says protocol was not followed. the miami field office was never contacted to investigate. a major development in the russia probe. the justice department announced the indictment of 13 russian nationals, saying they were part of a vast, sophisticated operation aimed at disrupting u.s. elections. those blockbuster revelations are impacting the silicon valley. facebook is now doubling its security staff to 20,000. and it is working with the fbi

to stop election interference. the indictments are the first to come out of special counsel, robert mueller's investigation with direct connections to russian interference in our elections. >> the defendants allegedly conducted what they called information warfare against the united states. but the stated goal of spreading distrust towards the candidates and the political system. >> the 13 russians named in the documents allegedly worked to discredit hillary clinton's campaign. they also used muslims and the black lives matter movement to divide americans. the russian operation began four years ago, well before president trump announced his campaign. the president did not answer questions about the indictments, but he tweeted that his campaign did nothing wrong, and that there was, quote, no collusion. putting pressure on lawmakers. students rallied at uc berkeley, demanding action on daca. >> d-a-c-a! immigrants are here to stay!

>> yesterday students of all ages gathered with teachers and mechani members of the immigration rights group, bam. they want congress to reach a deal on behalf of the so-called dreamers. those are the undocumented immigrants who were brought here to the u.s. as children who are protected under the daca program. president trump set a march deadline to get rid of daca and bipartisan negotiations so far have failed to come up with a solution to save it. >> this is a new civil rights movement of young people coming out today, having teach-ins, rallies, saying we want daca to stay and we want a dream act. and we don't want any wall with our neighbor, mexico. we won't take a wall. >> leaders said this was part of a larger campaign against immigration enforcement raids happening in california and elsewhere. we have more live coverage from the winter olympics in pyeongchang. stay with us.

good morning. it's 7:41. you have your cup of coffee in hand. i hope you're enjoying your saturday so far, because look at how beautiful it is outside. this is a live look over half moon bay, using our weather underground cameras, we have the beautiful sun coming out. 39 degrees. but we do have our stormranger, and that is actively scanning, ready for that incoming storm system that is expected to bring a drop in those temperatures. now right now we're in the 30s and the 40s at this hour. we're actually just a tad bit warmer in some spots, and that's because an increase in sea moisture is bringing in milder temps for areas like san jose, 44. hayward, 44. but still very cold in napa. 34 degrees. santa rosa, 35. your daytime highs for today. today is going to be the last day where that bridge of high pressure continues to sit over the bay area, dominating. ask that's going to bring another mild/warmer afternoon across certain parts of the bay

area. 68 degrees for concord. a high of 66 for oakland. san francis san jose, 69. san francisco, a high of 63. but take note, these highs, because come tomorrow, we are getting ready for a pretty big drop in those temperatures. we're talking anywhere between 10 to 15 degrees in drop. let's look at the futurecast. because we're talking about that incoming storm system. if you notice, sunday at about 7:30, so even into tonight and tomorrow, we do see some moisture on the map. however, the majority of that moisture does kind of stick off along the coast. which means areas like san francisco, possibly half moon bay, might get a couple of showers. but the biggest point of focus is going to be all of that snow that is expected for the sierra. and also to that cold front is going to kick up those winds. so get ready for gusty conditions as early as tonight and into tomorrow. so by tomorrow, if i fast forward this time line to 2:30 p.m., look at santa rosa,

23 miles per hour. san francisco, 22. and these are northwesterly winds. 22 miles per hour. and then they really start to pick up sunday evening at about 6:30, right around dinner time. we'll start getting gusts and higher elevations up to 40-plus miles per hour. so expect gustier conditions along the coast and in higher elevation areas. let's talk about the snow. exactly how much snow are we getting? we're talking anywhere between 8 to possibly 10 inches of brand-new snow for the sierra. look at tahoe city, 8 inches and this is just sunday alone. twin bridges, 8 inches. and the conditions expected to be very poor, especially travel conditions. because if you're thinking about the winds here, it's only going to be gustier in the sierra. tahoe city, 25. and eventually the winds and gusts get up to 50-plus miles per hour into the sunday morning hour and into monday. so not really a good day to travel up to the sierra. if you do have plans to do so, i

oh! oh, my god! >> yeah, imagine catching that on your cell phone camera. that's an exchange going viral. one of them flipped his own car. the man standing there appears to spit on the man in the suv. that driver tries to go around. he ends up overturning his car. the man who was standing was promptly arrested. a dangerous predicament for three hikers after a wrong turn got them stuck on a cliff in san francisco. it happened yesterday, just north of baker beach. sky ranger was over the scene as crews came to the rescue. the hikers were all okay and used their cell phones to

communicate with the dispatchers. new information on the flooding that closed do ywn the oakland dmv. we brought you this story last week. thieves pulled copper pipes from the ceiling of this dmv in oakland. that triggered flooding and forced the dmv to shut down. we learned the office will reopen march 5th. right now crews are working to fix the damaged walls and flooring. in the meantime, the dmv is still honoring its appointments at its other offices. about 100 teachers, students and parents rallied outside a south bay high school -- rather a school, protesting a plan for more portable classrooms. they gathered yesterday in front of the middle school in santa clara. they say the k-8 campus is already crowded and more students and portables would only make the situation worse. they want to see overflow students bussed somewhere else. but the santa clara unified school district says new schools will be built, and it takes time. >> this is the interim solution, so that students are not displaced. >> so on a rainy day, we're all

sharing one small space. kids are eating in there. it's very difficult to do anything effectively. >> the district says new schools should open by the year 2020. which should help solve that overcrowding problem. well, what was once a little-known loophole is now being described as a gateway to fraud that is helping some landlords make big bucks in oakland. two years ago, the investigative unit first exposed similar abuse in san francisco. lawmakers credit the report for spurring one of the city's largest housing reform efforts in recent history. now he has found that landlords may be using the same loophole to evict families across the bay. >> reporter: good morning. more and more renters are getting kicked out in oakland. where landlords may have been wrongfully evicting tenants for years. because the city's own record-keeping makes it nearly impossible to keep track of fraud. in oakland, renters can get kicked out of their homes if their landlord or landlord's

relative wants to move in. it's called an owner move-in eviction. some landlords are kicking out rent-controlled tenants in order to bring in new tenants willing to pay more in rent. by law, landlords have to agree to continue living in the home for at least three years. but we have learned no one from the city is enforcing that rule. and landlords aren't required to submit any proof they're living in the home. that could soon change, in part thanks to our reporting. on tuesday, the oakland city council is expected to pass a new law, and it could impact you. when renters are kicked out as part of an owner move-in eviction, landlords would have to submit documentation to the city, like a utility bill each year for three years to prove they're continuing to live in that home. if passed, the new regulations will take effect may 1st. well, the olympics are an inspiration to people of all ages, from athletes to nonathletes. fans come from all walks of

>> okay. tell us about his personality. a little shy, tough to warm up at first to people? >> he's a little introvert, but once he warms up, he's really sweet. he will just jump right in my lap now. once he knows and trusts you, he's a really sweet guy. >> and how is he with other animals, other pets? dogs? >> yeah, well, i haven't seen him with cats. but with other dogs, h his size he's really, really great. he plays well with them. he just has to warm up to them, but once he does, he's really good with them. >> how about with kids? is he good in a kid home? >> maybe with time. i would say with older kids who could be more patient with him, because he's a little more fearful. but with time, he could be really great with younger kids, as well. >> and he is only 1 1/2, so he's got a long life ahead of him. and al, talk to us about this new event you have going on where you want people to come in and kind of get to know the animals. >> yeah. what we have been doing lately, vicki, is having our staff and our volunteers really emphasize
