right. gold medals are in short supply so far. as you see, we took home a silver tonight. that belongs to nick gepper. he puts down an amazing third run as he repeats as a medalist from 2014 in sochi when he got a bronze, and now he has a silver to add to that. gus tenworthy, he struggled in all three runs today, finishing down in 12th. now, even though that is today's competition, folks are still buzzing about yesterday's competition. that, of course, being the men's free skate at the performance of the americans. particularly one palo alto teenager, we've known about vincent for a while, but it seems like the world is just discovering him after his sixth place finish. vincent told me now what the competition has done, he is going to enjoy the olympic experience and look forward to what's left. >> this is only the start. this is only the start, guys. >> at the 2018 pyeongchang

winter games palo alto 17-year-old vincent joe exceeded everyone's expectations, except for perhaps his own. skating the two best programs of your life and a sixth place finish would be a headline for many skating careers. vincent, however, plans for them to read like a footnote. >> i hope to be one of the greatest of all time, and that's no easy feat to accomplish. >> not every athlete, however, leaves the games feeling like this does. skejds westenberg 17th place in the women's skelton had her on the verge of tears in our interview. >> i was jacked. >> moments later surrounded by 25 friends and family who had traveled here to cheer her on. the smile was back. in company like this, it's hard not to feel like a winner. >> you know what, she's here. she's top 20 in the world. that's all that matters. i mean, this is the one race that is the season that i wasn't nervous about because she wasn't

the two nearly didn't make it out alive. nbc bay area mirran introduces us to the woman many are now calling a hero. >> reporter: before firefighters arrived to find this antioch home in flames, samantha had to make a split second, possibly life or death decision. should she respond to the call for help from a woman inside the burning home? >> my roommate, he is paralyzed. i can't get him out by myself. >> samantha lived her shirt up over her face and charged into the back bedroom where her 77-year-old neighbor sat in this office chair. here she showed us how she crouched low and pushed him out of his bedroom. >> halfway through the hallway i start feeling the smoke. like, okay, i can't breathe, and i looked behind me. it's pitch black. >> they reached the front door just before flames consumed the entire home. >> the fire just blew through

everything. front door, it burst through the windows, glass was everywhere in seconds. >> reporter: burton was loaded on to a stretcher and taken to a hospital where he underwent surgery for a broken hip. his son arrived, embracing samantha. >> i know she saved his life. i'm so thankful for samm ama aar saving mill dad's life. >> reporter: a mother risking her own life to save another. mary ann favreau, nbc bay area news. this just in. a man, woman, and dog all found dead inside a home in fremont. a relative asked police to do a welfare check on the couple after hearing nothing from them for days. this is near third street and niles boulevard. they also found a gun. investigators say they are not searching for any suspects. a legal showdown is looming between the city of san carlos

and a gun store chain. the city says it doesn't want a gun shop to open right now. the gun store says see you in court. only on nbc bay area, sergio cantana where the store was slated to open. sergio. rifrm >> reporter: right there, terry, is where it would have opened, but after the city of san carlos passed a year-long moratorium, the owners of that outlet say they feel like they're being treated unfairly. this corner unit now sits empty. it faces a bustling shopping center with a popular family arcade and an electronic store nearby. the idea of a gun store opening here didn't sit well with a few shoppers we talked with. >> every time we have a shooting, everybody says no more, we have to do something, and doing something productive is not opening more gun stores. >> reporter: she's, of course, talking about the horrific february 14 mass shooting in parkland, florida.

the letter from attorneys representing turners outdoorsman was issued to the san carlos city attorney february 16th. it reads in part turners outdoorsman has claims against the city of san carlos for veelgss related to the issuance of a moratorium. san carlos city councilman k collins says the times has not been good. >> when they first made their application, it was right after the las vegas shooting. then a week before our council meeting was sutherland springs shooting. now they've sent this letter two days after parkland. >> reporter: he says the potential legal action is also unnecessary because san carlos has not banned the opening of any new gun stores. >> all we really want to do is review our ordinances and rules as to how we permit these kinds of stores. >> reporter: during a heated security council session, they approved a moratorium and extended it to a full year. the owners of turners outdoorsman have since taken down signs advertising a

november opening that hasn't happened yet. now, we spent a good part of the day trying to contact the attorney representing turners outdoorsman and a spokesperson. so far no response. reporting live in san carlos, nbc bay area news. >> thanks. zblierng a frightening home invasion robbery. a family was in the middle of lunar new year celebration with three masked men breaking in. yesterday afternoon she received a disturbing call while she was at temple. three men broke into her home while her brother-in-law was inside cooking. his two daughters and 4-month-old grandson also inside. the family says the intruders tackled him, held him down, and then ransacked the house. >> they pull all in the room, with the baby, and the two daughters. they tell him -- they said they have a knife and gun too. tell him don't talk. >> the thieves took around $3,000 worth of jewelry and red

envelopes with money for children and charities. the fbi is now looking into an explosion that happened outside a home overnight. this is video of the aftermath. it happened on blue jay drive. you can see burn marks all along the front of the home, excessive damage near the front door. nobody hurt in the explosion, but after speaking with police late in the afternoon they tell us the blast was large enough to kill someone, and they are working on a number of leads. we want to hear from you if you know something about that. >> when his hard drive crashed, he thought the worst outcome was losing files. instead, he is now feeling blackmailed and feels his private data will be sold on the dark web. i'm consumer investigator chris gamora. how to protect yourself next. we saw the last of our spring-like weather today. 71 in san jose. right now 54 degrees. get ready for a windy finish to

there just because your computer stops working. >> it's wrong. it's just wrong. >> reporter: when david plat's hard drive crashed, he sent the disk away for recovery. the company recovered some files, but none of the ones david specifically requested. david disputed the $383 he paid. >> i won. >> the bank sided with david triggering an unexpected twist. >> it's a scary thought. >> david says the hard drive company informed him it was keeping a copy of his data, including photos, emails, and financial records, and it could sell all of it to settle the payment dispute. >> immediately i thought this is what extortion feels like. i felt like they sent the guys with the baseball bats to my house. >> reporter: secure data rescue pointed david to its terms and conditions, which customers must agree to. the second to last paragraph says it may take all steps necessary, including selling the data, to recoup the costs of a

dispute. >> not only was my data was rescued, it's not really secure. secure data rescue is nothing. >> reporter: david fears the corrupt buyer could steal his identity, and so did we. so we contacted secure data rescue in georgia. co-original matthew rice defended his company's contract as necessary to combat fraud. rice says he has never actually sold anyone's data, but he also refused to return or delete david's data. rice said it's our data. we could do with it as we please. >> when this company threatens to sell your data, they're basically holding you hostage. >> law professor anna hunt refused a secure data rescue contract. she noted how one paragraph guarantees not to disclose data to third parties. yet another authorizes selling the data. >> they are completely at odds. >> next we visited two long-standing data recovery companies for their reaction. >> that just shocked me. >> it upset me, made me angry.

rinks drive savers in nevada and recovery data in l.a. say data recovery companies do hold customers' data, but only briefly for shipping trouble. >> after 40 days it's purged. >> they complain the rules are murky because data recovery is largely unregulated. >> i wish there was some kind of regulation put in place that you had to go through this process to be verified. >> should it be regulated? >> i would welcome it. >> reporter: hundreds of companies offer data recovery services on-line, so how do you choose one? these experts recommend asking your device manufacturer. >> it's apple, call apple. >> reporter: request a list of authorized service providers. >> they check them out. they vetted them. they made sure that they have the capabilities. >> reporter: as for david, he feels he has a gun to his head with his data possibly up for sale. >> we got to buy it back, don't we? >> reporter: he is frustrated and fearful, but also motivated to share his story with you.

tomorrow similar to what we have outside right now. 54 degrees in san jose. that's down from 71 earlier today. oakland, 51 degrees. over forwards san francisco, just some partly cloudy skies. currently about 52 degrees. tonight we'll see increasing clouds late. temperatures for the morning, and the 30 endzos and 40s. a windy finish to the weekend. santa clara valley, northwest at 20 miles per hour. mid 50s around the east bay. probably not going to feel as rememb warm as what the thermometer will tell you. as we head to the afternoon, peninsula temperatures mainly in the mid 50s, and you see a similar trend from san francisco gusting for the afternoon and evening and into the north bay highs in the low 50s with a chance of showers on sunday. first, look at the wind speeds hour by hour as we head through midafternoon and through 6:00, you see the areas of red and purple showing up.

wind gusts could get above 30 miles an hour. they'll continue to stay blustery as you go into sunday night because canadian air conditioning will be coming into the bay area and dropping our temperatures. futurecast probably doesn't look all that impressive in terms of coverage of rain. most of it will be towards the coast. very isolated in nature, these showers. the air will gradually trend cooler as you get into monday morning. while the precipitation tolls with this pattern, looks relatively light, it's the location and the temperature where it could get interesting around mount hamilton or maybe around the santa cruz martin luther king. elevations as low as 2,000 feet or lower. could see a dusting of snow. not big on rainfall totals, but big on cold and wind and watch these temperatures drop as you get into monday morning. you see 30s. daytime highs on monday. upper 40s and low 50s. this will set the stage for our freeze watch as we get into monday night and tuesday. all bay area valleys and bay side, you can see frost advisories.

monday night and probably into tuesday night as well. another cold system drops down the coast for thursday. could be another chance of some low snow and then the pattern looks dry into the weekend. next weekend. then another cold storm drops in as we head into monday. the story of the next seven days, windy and cold. san francisco's temperatures overnight could be in the 30s. valleys droop into the 20s. monday night and tuesday. a little low in terms of precipitation, but big on wind and a big plunge of temperatures over the next couple of days. >> oh. >> you see the precipitation. >> yeah. we need more. >> more. okay. still to come, a ticket agent at the airport senses something was wrong. she was right.

to check in. both were traveling to new york on first class with one-way tickets. second, neither of them had id. it was a problem with the credit card used to pay for their tickets that prompted the agent to alert authorities. >> it was flagged as fraudulent. the card was stolen at some point and being used. >> the girls told sheriff's deputies a man they met on instagram hired them to do modelling work and was flying them to new york. authorities are trying to track that man down, but he has deleted his instagram account. a customer gave us these pictures, and the kr elphone video. fremont police say an 80-year-old man was trying to park his car when he hit the gas pedal instead of the brakes. it was a contractor working there at the time, and the car pinned him to the wall. police say he was taken to the hospital with moderate to severe non-life-threatening injuries. the pizza shop was able to reopen later today. a messy situation in san francisco this morning.
