tough, but i was cheering for team u.s.a. the whole entire time. >> right now on nbc bay area news, she is waiting and she is watching, an olympic figure skater from the east bay, talking about what she's doing to prepare ahead of the biggest skate of her life. but first a developing story in the south bay, an unexpected and dangerous road block right on 101. the news starts right now, good afternoon, everyone, thank you for joining us on this special edition of nbc bay area news, i'm terry mcsweeney. >> and i'm jessica a geary. we will get the latest in pyeongchang in a moment. first we want to start in santa clara county. >> an emergency landing happened just before noon highway 101 near the san martin airport.

thom jensen was the first reporter on the scene. thom, you spoke to the pilot. he must have a heck of a story to hell. >> reporter: he really does. we couldn't talk to him for very long, he was trying to get the airplane into the airport at san martin, it was quite a story. it was not a crash, it was what he told me was an unscheduled and obviously emergency landing. as he was trying to get from an airport in davis and fly back to his home airport in watsonville where he has a hangar, he said that he had a mechanical malfunction of some sort. he called into air traffic control and they routed him here to the san martin airport, but as he came down out of the clouds flying up at about 16,000 to 20,000 feet he knew that he couldn't make it into the airport here, so he set it down on 101, the highway actually becoming an emergency landing strip. >> my wing tip was out in the number one lane and a couple of

cars moved over to make room for me and i'm sure it's a day they will remember. everything worked out fine. >> reporter: it did take a couple of hours to shuttle that the san martin airport, some had to be done by hand as they tried to shimmy it around signs and other obstacles. the pilot wayne wright said he's been flying for 40 years and sometimes he told me, quote, stuff happens. no one was injured and the airplane was not damaged. it is here at san martin where it's getting some service now. we do not know the extent of the malfunction but i can tell you that highway 101 was backed up for quite some time today, five miles in both directions as it was just too much for lookie-loos not to look at this airplane as it shuttled down the highway. thom jensen, nbc bay area news. now, thom has been tweeting from that scene with the very latest, all updates on the

investigation, you can follow him on twitter @thom nbc bay area or follow our nbc bay area twitter account for breaking news updates as well. now to our other top story from record warmth to potentially weather cold. get ready for a winter blast. live look outside over fremont. you can see the strong winds pushing the flags, also a cold wind blowing. some parts of the bay area even awesome showers this morning. i wonder if they will turn to snow atom point. let's check in with rob mayeda tracking a freeze warning. >> we will be watching that tomorrow night, a taste of canadian air about to spill into the bay area. over around emeryville the camera is bouncing around, wind gusts up to 35 miles per hour and cool and breezy in san jose. yesterday we had a high of 71, right now midafternoon temperature of only 57 degrees, wind speeds at 20 miles per hour. so we are looking at a gusty evening and eventually more showers coming down the coast

with even colder air than what we're seeing outside right now and it's this batch of moisture, specifically for the santa cruz mountains that has a winter weather advisory midnight to 7:00 a.m. tomorrow. some spots could see 2 to 4 inches of snow. as we fast forward into monday night we have a weather alert for a freeze warning up for our north bay, east bay and south bay valleys. i will let you know how cold these temperatures will get and more rain chances ahead in our seven-day forecast coming up in ten minutes. remember, you can track the weather with our nbc bay area app, it is free, you can get updates in the forecast, a heads up when rain is coming to where you are and all over your neighborhood. now to the latest in pyeongchang. it's already been a big day of competition at the winter olympics. ice dancing, women's freestyle halfpipe and northern california olympians looking to make their gold medical dreams come true.

jinah kim is in pyeongchang with all the action. >> reporter: this is a traditional korean outfit called the hunbok in the korea house was kind enough to loan this to us. it was worn for centuries by women and men alike. the men wear a slightly different version. now it's only used on special occasions like the lunar new year we just celebrated here. much thanks to them and i hope you like it. so with all the fun and excitement here at the olympics we also have a ton of compelling stories and one came from yesterday's silver medalist who said he almost did not live to see today. >> one, two, three, wow. >> reporter: nick goepper's silver medal was the silver that hasn't been easy. >> he has shown large amounts of courage. >> reporter: after winning the u.s.'s tenth medal at the games .k

suffered depression after his bronze win in sochi. >> there was a time when i had given up on skiing all together, had given up on myself and basically wanted to end it. i was really glad that i got the help that i needed. >> reporter: another silver came from john-henry krueger, who said ahead of three of the world's highest ranked speed skaters in the men's 1,000 metef short skate. five inches is what separated gold from silver in the men's biathlon 15 k mass start which a french man won after an agonizing review of the photo finish. it was an eerily similar moment to his win in sochi. and the shib sibs are back, they skate for the u.s. in ice dancing's first event tonight. also coming up later tonight in prime time the two-men bobsled, that's always exciting to watch, perhaps even more exciting because one of the american competitors justin olsen had an emergency appendectomy just two

weeks ago and he is competing. so you will want to watch that. >> thank you very much, gina. a highly anticipated event for many people in the bay area, the women's figure skating short program that's coming up on wednesday. it will be the olympic debut of fremont's karen chen. in a news conference today chen talked about the long leadup to that performance. >> it was definitely pretty tough, but i was cheering for team u.s.a. the whole entire time. thankfully i was able to kind of get away from the village and train in chun chun at a rink there and i got a lot of really great training done there and i was really able to just focus on my skating and myself. >> okay. here is a fun fact. chen says she choreographed her own short program routine. her mentor is kristi yamaguchi who of course knows a thing or two about what it takes to win gold. so much to look forward to tonight. here are some of the athletes to

mclaughlin. eight men started fighting, one man was stabbed. paramedics rushed him to the hospital where he is still recovering. >> i just hear like a lot of a lot. we don't want to come out. we don't want to get in trouble. >> we've learned the victim's condition has now been upgraded. police have not announced arrests. firefighters in the east bay busyover night. in san leandro crews aresy@ on scene at a massive fire at a commercial building, it happened about 4:00 this morning on tea garden street off of 880. the flames were visible to cars on the freeway, in fact, at least one lane had to be shut down. at least four businesses were damaged. alameda county firefighters still investigating the possible cause there. another early morning fire, this one left a firefighter hurt ffamilies with nowhere to stay. it happened at an apartment complex in martinez. someone left a pot unattended on the kitchen stove.

victims of the florida school shooting, their classmates an survivors are coming out with a strong message saying they won't feel safe returning to school unless change is made on capitol hill. several student activists appeared live on "meet the press" this morning, they say they will be leading a march through the streets of washington, d.c. on march 24th demanding lawmakers take action on gun control and mental health. it's being called march for our lives. they are encouraging marches in other cities across the country as well. >> i will not feel safe going back to school myselfsfi until reasonable mental health care legislation and gun control legislation is passed because at this point it's unacceptable. >> so here is what they're planning on doing, the school superintendent says the tentative plan is for teachers to return to classrooms on friday, students return on monday, february 26th. now, activists are encouraging students and teachers to walk out of classrooms on march 14th which will mark one month since the mass shooting and that walkout is9 supposed to last 1

a front row seat today.... to watch a gold medalist. a member of th some local olympics fans got a front row seat today to watch a gold medalist. >> yes, you remember her, a member of the so-called fierce five in burlingame today, laura hernandez won a gold in rio and today she was there inspiring young gymnasts. christie smith is live where the buzz is still in the air over

her appearance. she is just so bubbly. >> reporter: absolutely. i have to tell you this was such a treat for these young gymnasts here. laurie hernandez walked through these doors and shared her enthusiasm for the sport. >> so sweet. thank you. >> reporter: young gymnasts lined up eager to meet laurie hernandez, a star in their sport. >> being able to just be an olympian in general, i think being able to go to the olympics and be able to represent your country, it almost -- it changes the way that you look at yourself. >> in 2016 hernandez won olympic team gold in the silver medal in the balance beam in rio. >> just being able to be an athlete from the summer olympics i'm rooting for the winter olympians. there are a lot of people especially nick goepper and chloe kim. >> reporter: their amazing feats are grabbing attention on the

world stage while gymnasts in burlingame today showed hernandez their skills. >> seeing her on the olympic screen knowing that she was about 16, very close to my age, makes me like kind of want to be like here. i want to be at that level. >> reporter: gymnasts at excel gymnasts raised funds for a chirps hospital with hernandez along with advice. >> if you can't find it in you to believe in yourself and go for t believe in your coach. >> reporter: it was a good time with a champion who still has more to do. >> i miss the sport and i think that i'm still very passionate about it, i've taken a year and a half off or so, but i plan on coming back. >> reporter: more than 50 young gymnasts have been working to raise funds for this benefit today. reporting live in burlingame, christie smith, nbc bay area news. he said he wanted to be america's sweetheart of the games and today to many people's flight we will be seeing a lot more of figure skater adam

rippon. nbc spokesperson confirms that rippon will be working as a contributor for nbc for the rest of the olympics. he will cover the olympics on a variety of platforms including tv, social media, too. rippon has become a fan favorite at the games. many people including reese witherspoon and sally fields have been charmed by his wit and candor, he can also space nicely. he is the first openly gay athlete to compete for team u.s.a. in the winter olympics. if memory serves me right i think he came in sixth in the men's. >> you are into it. >> yeah,y1-= he was great. >> yeah. >> amazing. >> well, it's cold there, it's going to be somewhat south korea-like here at times. >> trying to get you acclimated. temperatures dropping in the 20s in parts of the bay area. by monday night and again tuesday night the reason why we will have a freeze warning up for parts of the bay area. how about a view from pyeongchang. we are seeing somewhat more mild

conditions there. a high of 40, that's almost a heat wave compared to the single digit temperatures we saw to start the winter olympics. the 20s they are seeing there we will get a taste of that tomorrow night. right now 57 degrees in san jose, we will see a few showers later on. emeryville gusty, 55 degrees, temperatures around the bay area today 10 to 15 degrees cooler than yesterday's highs and right now just 54 degrees around san francisco. so for tonight, 30s to low 40s for lows, even san francisco and that's not a typo on the icon up there, a mix of snowflakes with a few scattered showers, very likely along the coastal hilltops. check out tomorrow's high temperatures, low 50s and with the breezes throughout the day it's not going to feel nearly that warm. the thermometer or car thermometer might say 55 degrees outside, it's going to feel like 40s out there. cool air rushing into the bay area, highs near 50, in daly city just a day or so ago we were pushing 70 degrees, now having a tough time getting past

50, in san francisco and for the north bay highs in the low 50s. so at times tonight and tomorrow morning you see the chances of showers and any of these stronger showers may briefly bring sleet closer to sea level. we will be watching this closely, especially around the santa cruz mountains where you have that winter weather advisory up into tomorrow morning. we will see partly cloudy skies and then the stage will be set for some very cold temperatures heading into monday night. rainfall projections here not a lot inland from the east bay on tri-valley, especially out near the coast where the santa cruz mountains temperatures will be cold enough for snow to add up especially above let's say 2,000 feet. that's the reason why the winter weather advisory for now is posted for the santa cruz mountains but we might see some of that mount by mt. hamilton tomorrow morning. the feels like temperature when you factor in the wind speed and air temperature will feel like 30s outside by 7:00 tomorrow evening and then tomorrow night

latest rocket launch - again. the "falcon 9" rocket was supposed to lift off from spacex has scrubbed its latest rocket launch again. the falcon 9 rocket has supposed to live off in southern california early in morning, but it was delayed so that crews could perform a few final checks. this is the second delay this weekend. if all goes well the rocket will launch into orbit wednesday morning now. spacex is the brainchild of elon musk. no drive through here. concord police posted it on facebook after an antioch manti drove his car into a building. ironically the building belongs
