♪ ad lib live picture-- dublin. a nt a very good monday morning to you. it is also presidents' day, if you have the vacation day off, enjoy t sleep in a little bit, other folks are up and at'em as we take a live look at dublin. a winter weather advisory has been issued for parts of the bay area. it is a very cold start out there. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. right now we want to get a check at that cold weather. kari, you've been monitoring it all. >> i think laura woke everyone up when she said winter weather advisory. they were like, what? >> and i want to show you what's happening on the radar right now because we've seen some spots where we do have a wintry mix coming down and that is mostly for our lower elevation areas and where we are seeing some of

our hill peaks as we get a look at what's happening near mt. tam. that little cell that's over that richmond-san rafael bridge was just over mt. tam producing light snow and a wintry mix. that has since moved a little bit off towards the east. as we go down the peninsula we are seeing some light rain, but notice that pink. that's a wintry mix. we are also seeing that producing some light snow along 35. is that skyline, mike? yeah, skyline. so we are some of our elevations a little bit higher up getting some light rain and some snow. so i will talk more about this and when we could see spotty rain. that's coming up in just a few minutes. mike, you are expecting a lighter commute today. you said skyline for that wintry mix, usually we find that in the salad section. that's spring mix, sorry. a smooth drive easy expected for today because it is a presidents' day holiday for many businesses and most schools. we are looking over here for eastbound 580 getting out of the area, livermore in toward tracy.

there is an overturned semi-truck that went off down the embankment. no major injuries but this would take quite a while to clear. a quick look at the bay bridge from emeryville shows you there is still some wind out there. breaking news for you right now at 4:30, a fire has sparked up again at a condo complex in martinez. this is video you are looking at right now just into our newsroom a few minutes ago. firefighters on the scene still eastgate road this morning, officials tell us that this morning's blaze is a rekindle of a fire that broke out at the same building sunday morning. that fire was started by an unattended pot on a kitchen stove. five of eight units in that building were uninhabitable as a result of the fire. fire marshal says that this morning's fire is not suspicious in nature and that rekindles happen occasionally. pete suratos is heading to the scene right now, he will bring us a live report in our next half hour. hope you had a chance to cover your plants before you

went to bed, bring those pets inside. temperatures are dropping significantly this morning. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in danville with the cold snap slapping the bay area this morning, bob? >> reporter: well, right now, marcus and laura, it feels like the upper 30s here in danville, but come tomorrow we might be looking back at this as a heat wave because it's expect-vh, t get much colder. the national weather service is going to be issuing a freeze warning that goes into effect tonight through tomorrow morning, forecasters are predicting temperatures to drop even lower into the low 30s down to even the low 20s. our biggest concern of course is for the people who are homeless and who live out on the streets. in the south bay the city of san jose has already opened up a warming center like this one on tully road. this man who we caught up with last night decided to ride it out in his vehicle. >> i will just stay here in my car, covers the windows up so they stay warm.

victims were laid to rest. students, parents, teachers and administrators also held a rally calling for more gun control measures. in the meantime president trump tweeted that the fbi missed signals sent by the shooter because, quote, they're spending too much time trying to prove roougs collusion. that sparked backlash from some survivors and students. here is "today in the bay's" tracie potts with more. >> march 24th things are going to change. >> reporter: students who survived last week's florida shoot shooting are organizing a massive rally in washington aimed at congress. >> our job is to go to school, learn and not take a bullet. you need to figure this out. >> reporter: joining survivors from sandy hook, columbine, virginia tech, orlando, las vegas, march for our lives will demand that lawmakers get something done. >> i will not feel safe going back to school myself until reasonable mental health care legislation and gun control legislation is passed. >> the nra is funding these

politicians and we cannot let that stand anymore. >> reporter: there's support from both parties to make sure that people who shouldn't buy a gun don't slip through the cracks. two sources tell nbc president trump supports that idea. >> we're not getting the information into that background system so that absolutely needs to be fixed. >> i believe that we will get something done this year. >> reporter: and there's bipartisan support for banning bump stocks, devices that make rifles fire like automatic weapons. >> i don't know that it requires a vote of congress, i think atf could regulate bump stocks tomorrow. >> reporter: but there is no agreement on restricting assault rifles like the ar-15 used in parkland. tracie potts, nbc news, washington. all right. morning. now to the olympic games in pyeongchang. it's an action packed time in south korea for team u.s.a. athletes with ties to northern california. >> u.s. women's hockey crushing finland in the semi-finals and earning the spot for the gold medal game. hillary knight scoring her first

i am extremely proud of jackie, gaby and stephanie. we worked with pg&e to save energy because we wanted to help the school. they would put these signs on the door to let the teacher know you didn't cut off the light. the teachers, they would call us the energy patrol. so they would be like, here they come, turn off your lights! those three young ladies were teaching the whole school about energy efficiency. we actually saved $50,000. and that's just one school, two semesters, three girls. together, we're building a better california.

well, welcome back. right now you're watching "today in the bay" as we take a live look at san rafael this morning. it's getting colder here in the bay area. if you stepped outside you know that. we are expecting some freezing temperatures overnight this week as well. do you know what, it's also cold in portland, oregon. take a look here. so cold that that snow started falling in the metro area there and you can see those cars slipping and sliding everywhere. the areas expecting the same thing tomorrow as well so if you have family or friends in the portland area tell them to get ready. if you're planning to go there, well, get ready as well. >> people are like what is this white stuff? >> we can find out where exactly that was because everybody will still be there spinning their wheels. >> probably so. we had some problems up in the sierra, people getting stuck on 80. >> that was a huge deal, with still some light snow coming down this morning. we have a mixed bag of weather coming down around the bay area

with this weather system moving in, and we've seen much of the rain still offshore and some of the showers coming through the santa cruz mountains and for some of those elevations a little bit higher up we've seen that changing over to snow. as we look at marin county we're starting to see some of that light rain approaching the coast that will be moving off towards the east and once that brushes mt. tam it will bring in another wintry mix and then as we get a look at what's happening for the santa cruz mountains, we've seen the pinks and the grays here. pink indicates a mix of some rain and snow, and then the gray indicating some very light snow coming down. we are also seeing that snow coming down as you head just to the west of per toll lavalley and also into much of the santa cruz mountains. wintry mix this morning will continue and make sure you're prepared for the possibility of slick roads. other than that we are going to see a lot of the rain passing to the west of the bay area.

we are going to see our temperatures only make it into the low 50s today so be prepared for that and we are only going to be up to 53 degrees in concord, 52 in hayward and 51 today in half-moon bay. and 52 degrees today in the mission district. not only that but we will have some gusty winds kicking up to about 15 to 20 miles per hour. freezing temperatures tonight and a frost advisory in effect for the coast and inner bay. all of these areas in purple that's where we do have a freeze warning in effect, that includes san jose, morgan hill and the tri-valley up through santa rosa. as you're getting dressed this morning you do need a lot of layers once again. we are not really used to this cold. so make sure you have a hat, something that won't blow away and also a scarf to keep you warm and a nice warm coat and a good day for the boots as well. so we're breaking out all the winter gear. we will have this kind of weather over the next several days. looking at an area of high

pressure just to the west of us, but we're still getting these storm systems moving in and the next one comes in between thursday and friday. we will talk more about this, but, mike, we were talking about the road conditions and you're seeing some ice on the maps. at least on the road weather index. folks, the maps for the traffic system and the weather system are tied together. so i share the data that kari is showing. right in the area where she talked about the wintry mix coming through there is the potential for possibly ice coming through half-moon bay, skyline just off of 92. people that in mind. the roadways are very light right now, a smooth easy drive expected around the bay, presidents' day holiday, many businesses and most schools are off. looking at north 87 there was a mattress reported in the lanes traveling north toward 101. looks like it's just cleared over the last few minutes but i will let folks know there may be another traffic break over the next few so keep that in mind. over here looking at an easy drive getting over toward the bay bridge, that's the east bay. the north bay a little ice and snow possible as that moisture

comes through as kari is talking about. we will track that for the morning. we are also tracking your transit systems and no delays reported, but there are changes to all these schedules so make sure you check your agency for the special holiday schedule. on the streets they make more money for dealers than selling drugs, that's what one gun smuggler told our investigative unit about the illegal gun trade in the bay area. >> senior investigator stephen stock has a look at this story. >> we've been reporting on gun violence and stolen guns for two and a half years now. after our initial reporting on the nationwide trade of stolen guns we were contacted by a man who said he used to deal in illegal guns including some guns that had been reported stolen. the man is in federal witness protection right now. we checked out his story through court documents and other sources and found out he was telling us the truth about the prevalence of stolen guns and

scene on highway 101 in south santa clara county on sunday. it's a must see for you right now. take a look at this right here. yeah, that's a small plane being towed away. that plane actually landed on northbound lanes after its engine died. the pilot the only one on board was heading from davis to watsonville. thankfully no one was hurt. take a look at this. yeah, that plane had to be guided by hand through those small streets. it was taken to the san martin airport and that took about two hours. 4:51. happening today in san francisco the first ever parade to honor black history month happening later this morning in the bay view neighborhood. the parade will start at 10:00 at the dr. martin luther king jr. pool on 3rd street. there will be a celebration following the parade with food, performances and some cultural activities. should be fun. right now hundreds of thousands of penguins are gathering, getting ready for their great migration north. >> we want you to take a look at this video.
