>> it is cold. >> and it's going to stay cold. i know, you know, at sometimes they have to make some snow because we haven't had a lot. so we are going to have some more actually coming from the sky as we head into the next week. here is a look at what's happening right now in san jose, in santa teresa, we will stay in the 30s at least through 8:00. there we go. we update it and we are seeing those temperatures that will be warming up as we go throughout the day just a bit. mike, you were getting word of a wrong way driver. >> that is the report from chp. it's right here, the 880 overcrossing as you transition frommel 80 over toward interstate 80. now for just a few minutes i saw a disabled vehicle on the shoulder on this approach, that was cleared just over the last few seconds. we do see the cash lanes backing up and i see traffic throwing smoothly off the overcrossing. the backup, though, bigger than yesterday and those cash lanes and that is indicating more traffic flowing in through the area. no slowing except for right there at the toll plaza. that's different, again, than yesterday. more traffic flowing the rest of

dangerously freezing temperatures across the bay area which means you want to bring in your pets and bundle up this morning. kris sanchez live at santa clara this morning where some warming shelters are opening up. people really need to take care of themselves when temperatures dip this low and take care of others. >> reporter: right. laura and marcus, a lot of the folks who need to take shelter the most may not have anywhere to go and that's why homeless advocates like the folks here at the bill wilson center have been doing outreach, going out to make sure they know that there is shelter available. outreach services and agencies like the bill wilson center have been going out since the start of this cold snap and dropping off blankets at a homeless encampment off of highway 101 in san jose as the temperature was dropping below freezing. the city of san jose and county of santa clara were urging people to get in out of the cold at emergency warming shelters like the library branch on tully road, also the south side community center on cottle road.

the frost is starting to form on the ground as we are in the middle of this freeze warning. you mentioned this could be good for local wineries and here is why, one wine maker in livermore tells us that parts of the valley have been on track for an early bud break, that's when these buds break open and begin to flower and if they do that early it could spell a possible repeat of 2015 when vines like these bloomed too early, the rains came and in some instances washed away the pollen which meant to grapes. we spoke with a vineyard, they tell us their vines only produced 50% of the fruit that year. they hope that these cold temperatures that are hovering around 30 degrees will slow down this year's bud break. >> it's going to slow it down. it will delay it, which is good, because right now still too early. if we have stuff pushing too soon then we risk damage to the flowers when it rains because we usually get some rain in march.
5:36 am
>> you're happy with this potential freeze? >> yeah, it's fine. hopefully this is the last one. we don't want those going into march, then, yes, we will have problems, but at this time of the year we're okay, but we're getting to the end where we would like -- we want it to stop. >> reporter: now, it's possible that some of the vines here in the livermore valley have already begun to flower and there is, therefore, a risk that they could suffer frost damage this morning but that would just be a handful since most of the vines have left to bloom. there's nothing wine makers can do about it, they don't have watering systems to insulate the vines because these freezes are so rare. but in napa and sonoma you might notice the big circular fans heading up and down highway 29, those are there to circulate the warm and cool air. that's something on a morning like today or those days when the temperatures go bhonkers, that might help mitigate the

5:45 am
from getting those licenses. experts say that could keep the marijuana black market thriving and cut into revenue expected from legal pot sales. president trump's border wall prototypes are already costing the city of san diego thousands of dollars. the l.a. times is reporting san diego spent $50,000 on supplies for security for the area where the prototypes are. that's because the city was warned by the department of homeland security to expect major demonstrations which have never materialized. the sheriff spent more than $700,000 in overtime pay for border wall related work. the federal government not expected to reimburse any of that money. president trump has tweeted a i lot in the past 24 hours. >> like a lot of people you are just trying to keep up. >> i'm trying to keep up. the latest one came as i got into the studio, it just came in. donald trump, i have been much tougher on russia than obama. just look at the facts. that's simply not true. i will be honest with you, i would like to cover what's going
5:46 am
on in washington and each morning we sit in the newsroom, we type up a report about what's going on in washington and it goes out the window when president trump tweets, particularly when it's something inaccurate. he has tweeted a lot lately. this one was particularly snoet worthy. obama was president up to and beyond the 2016 election. so why didn't he do something about russian meddling? but of course obama did do something about russian meddling, he briefed donald trump and the republican leadership on everything he did, not only did obama confront putin about the election hacking, he leveled sanctions on russia in 2016, december 2016, kicking 35 russians out of the country. donald trump was not only aware of that, he reacted to it at the time. trump praised putin for not reacting to those sanctions. this is december 30th, 2016. = move on delay by v. putin.
5:47 am
i always knew he was very smart. this attempt to change history and we've seen several in the tweets just in the last couple of hours, this attempt to change history to convince you that the thing that happened that you remember is different than you remember it is called gas lighting. other news, trump has changed his mind about mitt romney, tweeting out an endorsement. romney is running for senator from utah and almost certainly will win. romney of course a long time critic of the president, calling trump a charlatan and danger to democracy. trump had urged utah's current senator orrin hatch not to retire to clear the way for romney, but hatch is going to retire. this may be a case where the politically smart thing to do is to endorse the guy who is almost certainly going to win the election even if he did call you names. each morning we try to keep up with what's going on. you can follow me on twitter and look at this, a lot of you wanted to talk to me on facebook so there it is, scott mcgrew tv
