d every other hometown in america. week. you. halfway through the workweek as we look out live on san jose. great way to start your morning, and thank you for starting it with us. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia. let's get straight to that forecast. it's snowing in some parts? >> yeah, farther north, parts of sonoma and napa counties we are seeing some low elevation snow this morning, and also a wintry mix. so it's going to be kind of a sloppy commute for a lot of people heading out the door farther to the north. as we get a look at what's happening right now as we get a look at our radar and storm ranger, it is shows some rain just offshore. we're also seeing more of those scattered showers through santa rosa, but up toward cloverdale and ukiah starting to mix in with some snow fluffies, also

around mt. st. helena. watching all of that this morning. we are going to see this changing over to spotty rain as the day goes along. mike, you were saying so far no worries out on the road. >> aside from the conditions you are talking about, yes, be careful out there, but no crashes reported and the conditions chp would warn us about potential ice and slippery conditions up in the north bay, but we are looking okay right now. south bay all the way up into san francisco on this map and then moving up we are looking at a nice crossing benicia and carquinez bridges, novato down 101 towards the richmond-san rafael bridge and a live look from the richmond sideshows you light traffic right now. we will also watch to see if we have any reports of slippery roadways further north. happening today students from across the nation will walk out in protest against gun violence. >> this as the victims who lived through the horrific florida shooting head to the white house to tell president trump what would make their schools feel

"today in the bay's" tracie potts has more from washington. >> reporter: as student walkouts begin across the country -- >> we just don't want it to happen anymore. >> reporter: -- students, parents and teachers joined president trump for a listening session at the white house today. >> to see what can be done better, what the actual concerns of the students are, what they would like to see. >> many want to see semi-automatic rifles like the ar-15 used in parkland restricted. >> you can't let 18-year-old kids go out there and get these kind of guns and i think that should be the first step. >> reporter: but with congress in gridlock, president trump is directing the attorney general to propose new rules. >> to ban all devices that turn legal weapons into machine guns. >> reporter: bump stocks and other devices that make rifles fire rapidly. >> we must do more to protect our children. we have to do more to protect our children. >> reporter: it's unclear what the administration can do. today the president hears

firsthand what scared students think he should do. tracie potts, nbc news, washington. authorities have reportedly found no credible threat for students at bent wood's heritage high school following a series of texts posted online. the east bay times reports two students in a dispute with each other sent each other threats that started escalating. those threats somehow ended up on social media. the mother of one of the youth told police that her child happens to be going through a particularly rough patch. happening today, it is the deadline to enter the race to be the person to replace particularly judge aaron persky facing a recall in june. as we reported to you earlier this month county officials gave the recall measure a green light. candidates have until 5:00 p.m. to turn in their applications complete with signatures. efforts to recall judge persky began after he sentenced prok turner to six months in county jail for sexually assaulting a woman on the stanford campus.

recall campaign organizers say turner's sentence was too lenient. switching gears now to the olympic games in pyeongchang. a lot of people having eagerly awaiting for the start of the women's figure skating, its highly anticipat?aqy event gots under way last night. >> karen chen from fremont was not part of the team competition earlier in the games so she finally took the ice last night which was day 12. there might have been a few nerves as chen stumbled through her first combination but then recovered well. all three americans in the competition stumbled in their first programs and all three are in the middle of the pack with karen in tenth position. and happening tonight in prime time palo alto's hillary knight and the u.s. women's hockey team are going for the gold, they will be taking on team canada. this is the fifth time both these have met in that cold medal matchup. canada has won the past three matchups, team u.s.a. defeated canada in 1998. >> norway continues to lead with

good morning, i'm landon dowdy and here are today's top business headlines. wall street is set for a mixed open this morning after stocks fell yesterday. the dow snapping a six-day winning streak with most of that decline coming from walmart. the retailer had its worst day in 30 years following disappointing earnings. walmart admitting it misjudged inventory levels at its online operations during the holiday shopping season. we also look for data today on housing and the minutes from last month's fed meeting.

the dow falling to 24,964, the nasdaq slipping 5 to 7,234. amazon has launched an exclusive line of over the counter health products. it could spark a price war. sources tell cnbc amazon launched the line last august with products ranging from ibuprofen to allergy medicine. pharmacies make money when customers getting medicine end up buying other items such as cosmetics, but they're losing traffic as people shop for those products more online now. google has i

today in the bay on this wednesday morning! welcome back, the time now 4:43 you're watching "today in the bay" on this wednesday morning. hump day. halfway there, you guys. taking a live look out now at san francisco, transamerica building, the lights all glittering, a great way to wake up, right?

>> right. >> at least that's what i'm saying this morning. >> it is cold out there once again. >> yeah. >> a little bit warmer than yesterday? >> just a few degrees. that really doesn't make much of a difference because as we go throughout the day it's going to be very much like yesterday and we do have this disturbance moving in that is bringing in a little bit of a mixed bag of precipitation for parts of the north bay. i've also been seeing some showers just offshore along the peninsula. so i will be watching that. now, as we look at what's happening here in the north bay, i wanted to give you a closer look because here we may have a very slippery morning drive so watch out for those icy spots, especially on those elevated bridges and roadways and for elevations above about 1,500 feet. where you see the grays that indicates light snow coming down, the pink shows the transition from rain to snow. and then for the green of course that is light rain from guerneville down to santa rosa

and extending farther south. this is the way it's been moving from north to south and we've seen this disturbance dropping in along with cold temperatures. right now we are at freezing in fairfield and it's 34 degrees in napa and santa rosa, it's 33 one degree above freezing in livermore and below freezing in morgan hill. in san jose 38 degrees with our highs today heading into the mid 50s for this afternoon. we will still have a chance of some rain moving through at any point of the day. make sure you're prepared and you do have a lot of layers as we go throughout the day. it's going to be a day for a coat and also a nice warm sweater and a hat. let's get a look at what's going to happen here. still shows a slight chance of spotty rain through 8:30, mostly for the santa cruz mountains, mostly cloudy skies for the rest of the bay area. then as we go throughout the day there will still be some spotty hit or miss showers here or there and a better chance of rain rolling through here tomorrow. a lot more to track on storm ranger as we see these

disturbances moving through and it's hard to get a timing on it because it will be very spotty and sporadic as we go through the next 24 to 48 hours. as we are going to see rounds of cold air moving in and a little bit of some moisture mixed in. our high temperatures in san francisco will stay in the lower 50s. it does dry out for the weekend, but by sunday the winds start to pick up ahead of the next disturbance moving in and that could bring us spotty showers and some rain early next week for the inland areas. upper 50s for the weekend as we look ahead looks like it will be one to get outside and enjoy because more changes will be ahead. mike, you were saying it's cold overnight for those road crews. it's been cold for us just going from the car to the studio. actually, the studio is always cold. looking toward the map and traffic flows smoothly up into san francisco. still no major reports of any crashes and that's a great deal if you are heading out on to the roads right now. from over here highway 4 down to the bay bridge and the berkeley

curve we have just 14 minutes and that's the minimum you will usually see through that area. you are at speed, a great drive there. if you are going to ride to work, very cold if you want to rush into the bart station at the palace street station we will have a couple ken trees open, a couple are closed overnight tonight and tomorrow until 6:30 a.m. it's still open you just can't get into all the exits and you will have to scramble around in the cold. looking toward our look at dublin, the dublin grade, even though it's early in the commute look at all this traffic traveling through the dublin interchange and westbound 580 heading toward castro valley. back to you. for several weeks we've been exposing the sexual misconduct allegations of san jose's presentation high school. >> our investigation unit was the first to uncover years of complaints that went ignored by the all girls school, now presentation is responding to our reporting and to the community. the school announcing the creation of an independent committee to improve the prevention of sexual misconduct against students.

the school will create an independent office for students who want to report a complaint of misconduct, harassment or bullying. here is crisis expert sam singer who is working with the school. >> the school continues to change and grow and evolve as it moves forward and it does everything it can to prevent harassment now and will do so in the future and these two initiatives the committee as well as the office that's going to be independent to protect students are new initiatives that will be helpful. >> since we broke the story multiple students and teachers have spoken out about what they call a culture of protecting the school over the students. last night a spokesman for the alleged victims released a statement saying in part, quote, they went out and hired the very best to spin and contort the true facts in a desperate attempt to cast a more favorable glare on the conduct. part and parcel to a strategy implemented decades ago. if you have a if i have or our investigative unit give them

delaying their decision on whether to make drought era water restrictions permanent. in a meeting yesterday officials decided to push the final decision to april. the plan is to restrict water usage and violators will face $500 fines. environmentalists are supporting the move while some landowners are afraid their water rights are being chipped away. as we've been reporting much of the state is already sliding back into a drought. happening today in san francisco, a public meeting on the new transbay transit center. this comes after reports last week the construction was facing delays. now, the transit center has missed key construction milestones, the opening has been delayed multiple times. it was slated to be open may 1st but the examiner reports it could be delayed until september. a san francisco historic preservation commission will decide today on the fate of a controversial civic centerc7' statue. critics say the early days statue is a symbol of oppression and they're calling for its removal. the statue shows a native american man on the ground with

two spanish colonists standing over here. today's meeting is at city hall at 12:30. two weeks ago they voted to have a christopher columbus statue removed from its city hall. pete suratos is looking into this story for us this morning. he is going to join us with more coming up in about an hour. at 4:51 a first look at a powerful weather -- weather satellite being built right here in the bay area. what it can do and when it will launch into space. but first, happening now, a developing story out of alabama. a police officer, a male suspect and a women are dead after an hours long standoff. officials say it started when police started investigating the woman's death, that led them to the woman's ex-husband. when police arrived at his home he opened fire on officers, killing one and barricading himself inside. police say it's unclear if the suspect committed suicide or he was actually killed by police. plus the dallas mavericks are firing outside counsel to

vandenberg air force base in southern california on sunday but it was delayed so crews could perform a few final checks. that was the second delay last weekend. spacex is hoping to send two small prototype satellites into space with today's launch. speaking of satellites the newest in high tech weather satellite is being built right here in the bay area and we've got an exclusive first look for you. >> it is called the goes west satellite and it's going built for noa. scientists at lockheed martin showed us how the data can help airplanes avoid lightning districts and how it can predict dangerous weather. >> the average warning time for a tornd across the united states is about 13 minutes and we are trying to -- our goal is to double that and be able to give people a half an hour, even 45 minutes. >> the satellite will undergo testing in the bay area, then it will be shipped off to florida for a launch in the spring.

another chilly start. good morning and thanks so much for joining us, i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. of course, we have kari with us as well as mike with your weather and traffic. we will get to that in just a moment. first we have to get to our better in south korea, garvin thomas live there covering the olympics. another busy morning for you, garvin. >> reporter: busy doesn't begin to describe t we are at the sliding center where within the next hour someone is going to win a gold medal. the u.s. grabbed one just a few hours ago in the most unexpected of sports. we will send everybody to work knowing everything they need to know about the olympics overnight, just ahead, but first we will send it back to you. >> it was a big night with the figure skating last night, too. so good to see. stayed up for that late, but we were bundled up under blankets because it was cold. >> and you probably still want to stay under those blankets this morning because it's hard to get out of bed when you know that it is freezing outside.

we have had freezing temperatures around the bay area once again and also tracking a little bit of some rain as we get a look at what's happening on our radar, seeing a lot of green there in the north bay, that shows where we are seeing mostly some rain, where you see some whites and pinks just south of ukiah that looks like that's a wintry mix coming down. we've seen this kind of widespread in parts of the north bay, but getting a little bit more spotty as our temperatures are now warming up into the upper 30s there, so we are seeing some changes due to that cloud cover moving in. i will talk more about this and what's ahead, but, mike, you have a report of a chemical spill. >> i do, kari. technically a chemical spill. chp is telling us there's some chlorine on the roadway. i will explain why i'm concerned. most of the bay looking great. we will take you out over toward the byron highway and just off the intersection of byron highway are mountain house road, reports of some chlorine, that's the initial report. but if
