joining us, i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. of course, we have kari and mike here with your weather and traffic. we will get to that in just a moment. first we want to go to south korea where garvin thomas is there for us this morning. another busy morning he has. >> reporter: the medals are coming fast and furious in pyeongchang. i promised you last hour we would have a medal to tell you about in bobsled. we do. plus the united states just won another medal in a sport where they haven't won one in quite some time. we will have all the details for you on all the medals, everything that happened overnight. we will tell you about that in just a few minutes, but, marcus and laura, first we will send it back to you. >> bringing the medal count up. now, if we could do the same for the temperature. >> and if you were following me yesterday on instagram, you know, mike, you were doing some skiing yesterday. >> oh, yeah, i saw that. >> so, yeah, mike inouye. >> getting a workout. >> and kari hall weather, check us out. i'm tweeting and instagramming

about how cold it is this morning and even a little bit of some rain moving through parts of the bay area and that is helping to keep us a little bit milder and just above freezing in many spots. as we're seeing a lot of green here in san francisco, down toward pacifica and also in burlingame, san mateo, sprinkles this morning, watch out for that as you head out for your drive. temperatures now in the mid 40s. it's not only cold but it is getting soggy in parts of the bay area so i will be tracking that. mike, you now have a traffic alert for a motorcycle crash. >> i do. we talked about the crash on the upper east shore freeway, i said i would give it a few minutes for chp to give us more detail. from san jose into san francisco both sides of the bay look great. a slower lighter build on both sides of the bay but over here westbound your commute direction at pinole valley road reports of a motorcycle down and the rider may be still down in lanes. so this is a big concern. only the fast lane is currently blocked, but more emergency crews arrive over the next few

minutes and we see slowing coming into the area starting right about highway 4. that's where we bring up our speed sensors, 22, almost 25 minutes getting from there over toward the bay bridge. it will build. we will track that, guys. for now back to you. it is 6:02. it's hard to believe but today marks exactly one year since the devastating coyote creek flooding that happened in the south bay. do you remember all this? it was after the anderson reservoir filled up after all that relentless rainfall that we had. quite the difference this year. but then the nearby quity creek overflowed its banks and flowed into this area. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live this morning at one of the hardest hit areas, the rock springs neighborhood to show us how far the city has come and people to move on from this event. bob? >> reporter: good morning, laura. yes, all that muck that was covering these streets is gone, the submerged cars towed away and those letter xs that the rescuers spray painted on the

apartments and duplexes they for the most part have been painted over but the rock springs neighborhood is not what it used to be. a number of people who were here when this area flooded a year ago have not returned to their homes. carmen is one person who did decide to stick around in spite of what she experienced when the anderson reservoir and coyote creek flooded her neighborhood on february 21st of last year the water moved so fast the fire department had to rescue had err in waters that was four feet deep in places. her apartment still bears some of the water marks. she relied on sacred heart to replace her belongings with money from a $7 million victim's fund and insurance paid her back for her submerged car. carmen, however, is worried about the next time we get a heavy rain season. >> i hope they get that creek cleared out so the water runs smoother, otherwise we are in

trouble again. >> reporter: the santa clara valley water district which mansion anderson reservoir has installed new barriers where coyote creek borders the rock springs neighborhood. the district says that that metal structure would protect these people from a flood of the same size. later this morning, 11:00, the district, the city, county, state and army corps of engineers will hold a news conference to discuss what else is being done to prevent flooding. reporting live here in the rock springs neighborhood of san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay". it is 6:04. we are following breaking news into our newsroom. social media absolutely lighting up on the word that reverend billy graham has died. in his home state of north carolina. the evangelistic association announced that death in the last hour. graham was an ordained southern baptist minister who grew into perhaps the single most influential evangelist ever. he was also the voice and the ear for a long line of u.s.

presidents. president trump was even a special guest at graham's 95th birthday party. by the end of his life graham sets politics aside in favor of his devout faith. billy graham was 99 years old. live breaking news out of washington, d.c. the first pictures just coming into our newsroom of police activity, this is happening right outside of the white house. nbc news is being told there is a suspicious vehicle in that area, the streets are shut down. secret service and d.c. police are on the scene to check things out. we can tell you the new executive office building is under evacuation, it looks like people are being allowed to walk in that area right now. we will let you know when there are other developments as our camera swings around to give us an overview of the area. you see additional police arriving on the scene. today marks one week since the deadly florida school

shooting. 17 people were killed in that massacre. happening today president trump plans to hear firsthand from survivors of the shooting. he wants to hear what they believe can be done to make schools more safe. the president is actually calling this event a listening session, it's making place at the white house today. it is expected to include students, parents and teachers from parkland. it comes on the heels of the president's new push to regulate bump stock devices like the one used in the las vegas massacre. >> to ban all devices that turn legal weapons into machine guns. we must do more to protect our children. we have to do more to protect our children. >> the president also plans to hear from parents of students killed in the columbine and sandy hook shootings. also today high school students from parkland will descend on florida's state capitol pushing for new gun control measures. at least 100 students from marjory stoneman douglas high school boarded buses yesterday for the seven-hour ride.

they plan to meet in tallahassee with lawmakers including florida governor rick scott. the rally is also planned. students are calling for a ban on military-style weapons. yesterday florida lawmakers voted against debating a bill to ban assault weapons. continuing coverage now, the 2018 olympic winter games, all new overnight the women's bobsled competition is over. just ended minutes ago. elena meyers taylor was the favorite going in. our garvin thomas was watching that event. he was in the stands with her husband who is from hayward. >> and, garvin, tell us all about that. >> reporter: well, the event here just got over but i have to tell you about another event that just ended within the last hour, another medal for the u.s. a bronze in women's team pursuit speed skating, the first speed skating medal for the women, team u.s.a. women in the past 16 years. back to the sliding center which in my opinion has the best

finish line in all the olympic games. the fans, the athletes, the finish line all right on top of each other and when a competition finishes it is bedlam. and it was just a few minutes ago. let me set the stage for you, going into the final heat elena meyers taylor was in second place in the women's two man bobsled just 0.04 of a second out of first. she did a terrific run on her fourth heat, finished in first place, all she had to do was wait for the final sled, the germans, to see how they would do. well, they did her one better. the germans ended up winning the gold in this event. elena meyers taylor takes home the silver, it is her third olympic medal but none of them so far have been gold. now, let's take time to look ahead to what we will be talking about in prime time and that's the chance for david wise to defend his gold medal in ski halfpipe. wise lives in reno with his wife and two children and skis in tahoe. he qualified for the finals in his event with the eighth best

run. of course, that won't be good enough to make the podium but wise is a savvy competitor, he hasn't shown us everything he can do. wise has been down this road before and he is enjoying the ride. >> i'm really excited to just go out there and enjoy doing what i love to do and that's kind of my mentality for it. i'm just going to go out there and try to do something on skis that i try to do my best version of skiing and gold medals or not i'm just going to enjoy it. >> reporter: one thing we have heard consistently from the halfpipe either snow board or skiing athletes is they love this halfpipe. they say it is long which let's them do more tricks, the conditions are perfect. why they love this is obviously each one they want to win a medal but they're interesting in showing off their sport in the best possible way and they say this halfpipe let's them do the best tricks and fans get the best show. back to you. >> it really is a showcase when you see them coming down that

sky. a gorgeous start. let's go to los gatos where our temperatures will be in the mid 40s at 10:00, today we're heading into the mid 50s, still breezy and sometimes of sunshine. we will talk about some rain, when and where, that's coming up in five minutes. we are also talking about two traffic alerts, this for the upper east shore freeway, west 80 jams up towards pinole valley road, there is a motorcycle down in lanes there. there is a truck off the roadway trying to be removed from the whipple avenue off ramp from north 101. this is on the peninsula. no slowing but an alert for this one as well. and wall street looking for a slow start thisjy'oa"w morni stocks fell on tuesday. that snapped a six-day winning vehicle. the dow industrials fell 254 points and you can blame this stock right here, walmart. walmart one of the dow 30, that company had its worst day on the stock market in 30 years. apparently walmart not selling as much as it hoped it would

over christmas. vice president mike pence will be in florida today to announce the deregulation of space. fewer rules about what private companies can do in order to encourage companies like spacex. back here in california spacex has just delayed the launch of its rocket carrying, among other things, small satellites to provide high speed internet to people down on earth. spacex eventually would like to launch thousands of those little satellites and deregulation would help clear the way for that. that launch was scheduled for just a few minutes from now, apparently high winds are an issue. when they do launch spacex will not try to recover the first stage as it usually does, but they will try to recover the nose cone and they will try to do that using a gigantic net. somebody tweeting out this picture of the body. there is a boat under that net. the boat is called mr. steven. i don't know why. mike inouye said they should

call it inter as in the internet. elon musk describes it as like a giant bouncy castle. i appreciate any rocket scientist who can explain it to me in those sorts of terms. >> does he have kids? >> he has lots of kids. >> then he knows. >> they probably rent it. >> yeah, they would probably own their home. 6:18. follow up now, this morning we have more on a woman who lost her wedding ring on a commercial flight, then she got it back in an unusual way. "today in the bay's" terry mcsweeney spoke to her exclusively and has her unique story. >> reporter: san francisco business entrepreneur brit morrin removed her wedding ring so it wouldn't be a distraction at an on camera shoot in new york. it was in her toiletries bag inside of her purse. >> part of my toiletry bag was unzipped. >> when she landed in wyoming for a family reunion the ring is

and around the bay area and these chilly tours as you go or school this morning here is a look at the radar. we've been seeing spotty light rain moving in, it's right there around sfo this morning, light showers in south san francisco, burlingame and san mateo, mostly some sprinkles near belmont and further south where it's dry in redwood city, we could see some rain moving closer to palo alto within the next 30 to 40 minutes. as of now it is really cold and our temperatures are still in the 30s for the north bay, below freezing now in fairfield and at freezing as well in morgan hill. 36 in livermore, 39 as you head out in san jose with our high temperatures today reaching into the upper 50s. check out the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen. some mid 50s all around from the peninsula to san francisco to the north bay as well. santa rosa today 55 and it's going to be breezy. as you head out for the morning drive low 40s. clouds still the potential of

spotty light rain and highs today only in the low 50s for parts of the peninsula. tomorrow we will have another chance of rain. most of what we are seeing this morning will be quickly out of here. heading through tomorrow morning in time for the morning commute for the north bay, scattered showers and that continues to move to the south. by early afternoon we could see some rain in the south bay as well as the east bay. our temperatures stay in the 50s and another round of heavier rain possible earlier this next week. make sure you keep checking back in. we have a jam, not the good kind of traffic jam with the music, we are talking about the jammed up traffic flow. westbound heading from the peninsula to hayward. this is a service lane this is what they added years ago so that folks could still have emergency crews arrive to lend some help. there was a crash reported along the high-rise, that reportedly cleared.

in parts of the bay area-- and right now at 6:30 on your wednesday morning, we are tracking some light rain in parts of the bay area and because of the cold temperatures we're even seeing some low level snow. this is a live look at our radar this morning showing you exactly where that rain is falling off the coast some of it right now. taking a live look from waukegan this morning. can't tell how cold it is out there, but it is beautiful. a nice start. good morning and thanks for joining us, i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. let's head over to meteorologist kari hall to get a look at what's going on with those -- the wet weather coming into our area. >> there has been low elevation snow for parts of the north bay and hills above 2,000 feet. as we get a look at storm ranger, our mobile doppler radar, it's that red scan that you're seeing going around the bay area. as we get a closer look at the peninsula and some rain that continues to fall around south city and pacifica, burlingame as

well as san mateo and just to the east of belmont. we are seeing rain around redwood city and we've seen this, mainly light and this is what we will be tracking throughout much of the morning. clearing out for the day. so more on this and also a look ahead to the weekend in a few minutes. mike, you've been tracking a few of those problem spots out on the roads. it's a bad time to use the san mateo bridge because there were two issues going on here, westbound this is a live picture, yeah, there you go, flashing lights there, slowly moving westbound from hayward to foster city. along that stretch there was a fender-bender a hit and run that cleared on the foer city side and then a stall at the high-rise top of the screen, so a very tough drive. let's look at your map, you see how tough it is. that's in the middle of your screen. overall the traffic flow is great on either side of that north or south. slow across 92, use the dumbarton bridge between the two. whipple closed from northbound

101. you're jammed coming off the carquinez bridge and by the time you get to san pablo. >> it's a half hour from highway 4, should hold steady there. back to you. >> we're following breaking news for you this morning. reverend billy graham has died in his home state of north carolina. graham was an ordained southern baptist minister who grew into perhaps the single most influence evangelist ever. here in bay area graham was viewed as a listening rod for his stances on gay marriage and abortion. happening today and only on "today in the bay" a south bay neighborhood is fighting for the removal of a grove of heritage red wood trees with where a developer wants to build new housing. this is happening on sierra avenue in mountain view. the struggle for sustainable and responsible growth is happening in communities across the bay area. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us live in mountain view to explain how the

city is trying to strike that balance there. >> reporter: it's a conversation a lot of communities have having. in mountain view the city will meet with the concerned citizens to figure out what's next. that drove of trees on sierra avenue in mountain view the developer wants to remove that to make way for a single family home. one house. neighbors are pushing back with lawn signs, a pay tigs and website. the mountain view city ordinance requires that two trees be replanted for every one heritage tree removed but opponents say you can't replace a mature tree overnight. >> one single family home should not clear cut an amazing grove of red wood trees that have a tremendous impact on the neighbors, community as a whole. >> there is a replacement for those trees, it's generally a two to one replacement. >> reporter: now, i got these numbers from the city of mountain view to see if it's making good on its hoard nance.

a lot of numbers on your screen but the bottom line is in the last three fiscal years the majority of mare taj trees removed for small development were replaced. the city's development department was closed on tuesdays so i could not get the numbers for the mare taj tree replacement for google, microsoft and el camino hospital. the city marks director will meet with the residents today and then with the developer one more time before deciding whether to permit that tree removal or to deny t i want to know what's happening in your community. what you're seeing in terms of sustainable growth and how your community is managing the bay area building boom. join the conversation on twitter and facebook. in mountain view, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> land is precious but so are those trees. thank you, kris. authorities have reportedly found no credible threat for students at bent wood's mare taj high school following a series of texts posted online. the east bay times reports two students with a dispute with each other sent each other threats that started escalating.

those threats somehow ended up on social media. the mother of one of those students told police her child happens to be going through a particularly rough patch. authorities in southern california are convinced they stopped a school shooting. the plot involved a 17-year-old student in wittier. police yesterday confronted him at the school but they didn't find a weapon. they later went to the student's home and found what they describe as multiple guns and ammunition. wittier police plan to talk more about that case later today. happening today in san francisco historic reservation commission will decide the fate of a controversial statue at civic center. critics say the early day statue is a symbol of oppression and want it removed. "today in the bay's" pete suratos is live at the pioneer monument where that statue is located to explain to us how or what could happen at this point. pete? >> reporter: yeah, good morning, marcus. the commission later this afternoon and they can decide if they want to remove this early

day statue. you see it behind me here right outside of san francisco's main public library in the civic center area. it does have critics including san francisco mayor mark farrell who sent a letter to that commission last week calling on the removal of this statue. so what is this statue? well, it shows a native american seated on the ground with a mission padre and other man standing over here. san francisco's art commission which is leading the charge when it comes to the removal of that statue calls it a symbol of oppression and it represents california's history from a, quote, euro american point of view. the vote comes a week after san francisco officially renamed columbus day to indigenous people's day and two weeks after san jose voted to remove a christopher columbus statue from its city hall. back out here live you can see that statue. i want to point out san jose is still trying to figure out what to do or where to put that customer columbus statue. if this statue is removed san

francisco about put it in long-term storage but that commission will vote on the issue at 12:30. we're live in san francisco, pete suratos for "today in the bay." it is 6:37. happening today also in san francisco public meeting on the new transbay transit center, this comes after reports last week that construction was facing delays. the transit center has met key construction milestones, the opening has been delayed multiple times. it was slated to open may 1st but the examiner reports it could now be delayed until september. it's a beautiful animation you show and then we go to real life. all right. looking over here we will be behind schedule as well if you come off the carquinez bridge and travel down via meshing lease. west 80 recovers from an earlier crash, that traffic alert has been cleared and we see from highway 4 down to the bay bridge and the backup there it's about 25 minutes. so that's an improvement over the last few. that's rare fort the morning

commute but lighter around the bay. we typically see this because winter break for a few schools, south bay school districts as well as san carlos and a couple other. slow getting over to the peninsula. highway 92 there was a crash, that cleared, then a stall still clearing from the high-rise, that's why 92 is a tough drive. you can take 84 across. the dumbarton bridge, that means there will be ac transit delays traveling across 92. we are looking' head to t a weekend. warm temperatures? >> sounds like you're begging. >> how about some sunshine? >> i will take that. >> we will take that. that will be something a little hard to come by over the next couple days. by saturday highs will reach into the upper 50s. it's not going to be that much warmer, but at least we do have that sun and that will make it feel great. now, on sunday more clouds move in. we keep the same temperatures with upper 50s to low 60s across the bay area.

recall measure a green light. candidates have until 5:00 p.m. to turn in their applications complete with signatures. efforts to recall judge persky began after he sentenced brock turner to six months in county jail for sexually assaulting a woman on the stanford campus. the recall campaign organizers say turner's sentence was too lenient. new this morning new findings show some of own ma county's shortfalls on the night of the deadly north bay wildfire storm. according to the press cath the state's office of emergency services has released an independent review. it finds sonoma county was not adequately prepared to alert residents about the fast moving fire. emergency staff members were not up to speed on the most effective ways to notify people about the fire. the report cites a lack of coordination between local agencies. president trump says he will sit down with students affected by school shootings today. >> scott mcgrew, he calls it a limping session. >> that's right. i have to just name the towns that the students are from, you

know exactly what i'm talking about. parkland, columbine, new town. the president will hear from students, parents and teachers as well from those schools and others affected by school shootings. his press secretary says don't expect quick solutions. >> one of the things that the president wants to do is make sure that he sits down with a number of people from across all fronts. unfortunately, when horrific tragedies like this happen everybody wants a quick and a simple answer, but there isn't one. >> pictures this morning out of tallahassee, florida, that's the state capital. some of these students arrived after an eight hour overnight bus ride to tallahassee. they're marching to the capitol building there to push the florida senate to ban assault rifles. yesterday students watched as the florida house decided not to consider that same bill. as you watch all of this unfold, particularly on social media, understand there is a lot of anger out there and there is a lot of fake news out there as

well. you need to be on gourd. here we see 15-year-old rotc cadet peter wang laid to rest. lots of far right accounts, even russian accounts, are saying some awful things. claiming that the kids are actors or they've been coached by anti-gun forces. case in point this tweet which claims it has uncovered a conspiracy after it caught a florida student wearing an earpiece while he was interviewed on live television. he is -- he really is. he's wearing an earpiece. it's entirely normal to wear an earpiece while appearing on live television, it's how you hear what other people are saying. when the young man is interviewed he is in florida, the cnn anchor is in atlanta or new york. the crew gives him an earpiece so he can hear the questions. earpieces are not conspiracies it's just how live television works. we examine the president's tweets and executive orders and speeches every day on "today in the bay." we have added facebook, a lot of you had asked for that. contact me on twitter and also

here, the red beam is the storm ranger our mobile doppler radar truck right now over pink which shows our wind farms over the delta and you're seeing green here, some spotty very light rain, mostly sprinkles, it just continues to fall apart. this should not have a major impact on your dachlt as you head out the door it may start to sprinkle and then it moves on. it's also very cold, our temperatures in the upper 30s in the south bay, gorgeous sunrise. 36 degrees and 35 in the north bay, 44 as you step out the door in san francisco. the seven-day forecast is up at the bottom of the screen. we are going to be in the low to mid 50s today for the coast, upper 50s for the inland)#0ñ ar up to 59 in concord and san jose 58 degrees. as you get dressed this morning you get a look out that window make sure you're wearing lots of layers. also a nice warm coat. now, as@- the day goes along w will gradually start to warm up but i think at least for that morning drive or standing out

there on the platform you need the gloves and the scarf as well. saw a lot of people wearing scarves yesterday. as we go through the rest of the forecast we could be talking about rain in the bay area, not a whole lot today, in fact, our skies will be clearing out, by tomorrow another disturbance will be moving in and this could bring us a chance of some rain and even some sierra snow. looking at some snow in our lower elevations in parts of the north bay and also on mt. "hamilton," we will see this very hit or miss, but at least we do have rain chances and some sierra snow chances in the forecast. i wanteds$ show you our sierra snow update. statewide we are only at 20% of normal, around lake tahoe oñ24%. i will be tracking some snow over the next few days. now, mike, you were saying overall this is a lighter commute. it is. with the number of problems i've been reporting that would be a question mark but overall look at the bay, a lighter flow. the south bay just kicking in. the tri-valley not a problem and even over here we have had a couple issues across the san

mateo bridge, the earlier crash cleared and now the disabled vehicle looks lick it's cleared from the high-rise. yellow instead of red and creeping back toward the hayward side. that's allowed to cover because of the volume lighter than what we often see. also held up a little bit south 880 at winton, a new crash there, sounds like it's in lane. i will track that. coming off the castro valley y, pleasant, same thing hayward and union city. as we get toward the bay bridge, this number here the top we see improvement, it used to be up near a half hour, now it's 23 minutes from highway 4 down to the bay bridge. the earlier crash cleared at pinole valley road, even the east shore freeway seeing some improvement. look at the bay bridge toll plaza, we have this pattern which we often see on a friday, remember, this is only wednesday. looking at the backup for the fast track lanes but the left approach is lighter, not even back to the parking lot. back to you. >> backing up. thank you. coming up next, a quick look at the top stories here on "today in the bay" including a

was one of the hardest hit areas during the coyote creek flooding. today marks exactly one year since that disaster. what a difference. the flooding started when the anderson reservoir filled up with rain water causing the nearby coyote kroo he can to overflow. since then the santa clara county water district has installed new barriers where the kite joe creek borders the rock springs neighborhood. the district says that would protect people from future flooding. local officials will hold a news conference later this morning to talk about what else is being done to prevent flooding. mountain view this morning where neighbors are fighting the removal of heritage red wood trees. the developer wants to build a house on the land along sierra avenue. today the city is hoping to meet with people who live in that area to talk about what's next. mountain view has an ordinance protecting trees over a certain size requiring replacement when they're removed. in this case two trees would have to be planted in place of each that are being removed. now, this is a drove of about

eight trees. neighbors have posted signs and even started a petition and website trying to protect the trees. >> a live look from san francisco's civic center this morning. at the pioneer monument. today the san francisco historic preservation commission will decide the fate of the controversial statue that is part of that monument. critics say the early day statue is a symbol of oppression and they're calling for it to be removed. they say the statue is offensive. it shows a native american seated on the ground with two men standing over here. critics say it's a symbol of oppression that represents california history from a euro american point of view. the commission will vote on that issue at 12:30 this afternoon. back now to the olympic coverage, we've told you about all the medals americans have been winning this morning. we also like to highlight some of the fans. >> "today in the bay's" garvin thomas found a man who has been enjoying the games with a special friend.
