>> i do, kari, and wet roads. the snow possibly up here in mt. hamilton. we had an earlier spinout which cleared at thornton for northbound 880. north 101 for about ten minutes all lanes blocked by a crash here. and now only one lane blocked and they're still slowing. a possible wrongway driver. i'm going to check with chp to see if there are any updates. we'll double-check. be careful out there. back to you. breaking news out of contra costa county, a chaotic scene overnight. two people were killed after a car crashed near a home in bay point. it happened off port chicago.

>> pete suratos is live there now with the aftermath and what led up to this. >> you heard from the homeowner who heard the crash? >> reporter: that's right, marcus, we did hear from the homeowner who says the crash came fairly close to his home knocking down a tree. you can see in this area this is where that crash happened. the tree they knocked over almost came close to the home. according to chp we're told that a camaro and the dodge pickup truck collided at this intersection. it goes north and then the camaro going west. you have two people dead, four victims alto go in all of this. the homeowner said it was quite a close call. here he was talking about the impact of the crash. >> it sounded like a bomb went

off. i thought it was almost a dream until i heard a man screaming. i ran over to the window and opened up my window. literally there were two cars, one completely smashed. it looked like the camaro just wiped him out. >> reporter: to give you an idea how close it was to the room, ten feet away from where he's sleeping in his room. so altogether you have four injured but two were dead as a result of this crash. the cause of the crash is still under investigation. of course as you get more details on this we'll bring that to you in the newsroom. we're live at bay point, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> all right, thanks for the latest there, pete. 5:03. now to a disturbing arrest in the south bay. sunnyvale police say a convicted sex offender is behind bars after he exposed himself to young children. he apparently watched them at gymnastics pras particular. police credit aware parents for

helping them catch him. this was tuesday night. they immediately called 911 and he has prior arrests for similar acts within santa clara county. he was placed on probation and is required to register as a sex offender. as it 5:04 right now and another bombshell in the presentation high school sex scandal. san jose police confirm to nbc bay area they're investigating whether school leaders failed to report claims of sexual misconduct to authorities as required by law. we were the first to tell but the claims from former students at the all-girls catholic school in san jose. they said school leaders mishandled the reports of sexual molestation conducting an internal investigation instead of calling police. since our reports aired, new claims by nearly 20 accusers allege similar responses by presentation involving current teachers. police will not reveal what they're specifically saying and are investigating but school has

placed at least two teachers on leave. >> gugs t because presentation never involved police when they were supposed to further victims were assaulted. >> in a statement to nbc bay area, stinger said, quote, we hope the san jose police conduct a thorough investigation because we believe we will be cleared of any of the false or misleading allegations. 5:05. law makers in washington and florida facing what seems to be more and more like a pivotal moment for the future of gun control. angry students fed up with the lack of regulations are leading the calls for change am students protest in florida and washington set the tone for emotional meetings tied to last week's high school shooting rampage. in florida in the town hall meetings last night, that's where they have a confrontation. those students confronted senator marco rubio who accepts

money from the nra. rubio now says that he would consider raising minimum wage to purchase rifles to 21. >> i believe in this country if you are 18 years of age you should not be able to buy a rifle. >> meanwhile at the white house president trump met with shooting survivors during his campaign. the president vowed to oppose gun control. he now agrees something needs to be done. >> let's never let this happen again, please, please. >> we're going to get it done. it's not going to be talk like in the past. >> even including a plan to arm teachers. other ideas include stronger background checks and banning bump stocks. critics still believe that the nra could make any real change tough. -- hard. it is 5:06. happening today an emergency court hearing in oakland to address concerns of the santa rita jail for pregnant inmates.

there was a civil rights lawsuit filed by six current and former inmates accuses alameda county guards of mistreating them while they were pregnant along to buss that led to mischarnlarriages. one says she was forced to give birth in solitary confinement with no assistance. they dismissed the allegations at the time. a historic but controversial statue in san francisco has been given the boot. the preservation commission has voted to remove the statue saying the early days showing. n they say it represents the oppression of native americans. >> two goals apiece in the shoot-out. she dekes and scores! to keep canada's hopes alive, she's stopped. the united states wins gold in

pyeongchang! >> and there you have it. this morning people are already calling team usa's late night win another miracle on ice. the american women beat canada in that dramatic shoot-out as you saw there to win the gold. and they got their medals overnight. our garvin thomas is in south korea. >> you heard from the fans and the players and it includes our peninsula girl, too. >> reporter: that's right, laurie. i don't think it's underselling it to say this is one of the greatest moments in u.s. olympic history, very sweet for all the players. but for hilary knight and the other veterans on the team it's a little extra special. you see, they lost to team canada four years ago in heart-breaking fashion at the olympics. they have just been waiting for a shot to get even and they took advantage of it. speaking of hilary knight, she got things off on the right foot for team usa scoring in the first period to put the team ahead.

the two hockey powerhouses went back and forth all game. at the end of regulation it was tied 2-2, overtime failed to settle the matter so they went into a shoot-out and one final save by team usa meant their first hockey gold medal since 1998. >> it's crazy, and i didn't think we were ever going to lose. to be in this position now it's really surreal but it's a dream come true for sure. my hope is all of us can share the success with their communities and continue to inspire next generation because that's what it's all about. >> reporter: i think you can imagine what happened next. fans poured out of the hockey arena and began celebrating in olympic park, not just the fact their team won but that it happened in such heart stopping fashion, had many in almost disbelief about what they just witnessed. >> usa! >> usa! >> usa! >> best experience at the

olympics ever! >> it's so fantastic. i almost cried. i'm so proud of us. >> reporter: not just the hockey win but if you were following last night there was so much happening all at once. it was a record day here at the olympics. there were ten medal events in a single day and that has never happened before. >> it is so exciting to see. the women's hockey team will be on the "today" show. a live interview this morning. it starts at 7:00 a.m. right here "today in the bay." norway continues to lead with 35 total medals. germany and canada rounding out the top three. team usa alone in fourth place this morning with 21 medals. and right now at 5:10 it's a cold start this morning. been tracking some spotty rain mostly for the south bay and the east bay.

chains. squaw valley getting some snow right now as we get a look at the radar and we will see some light snow with the weather advisories in effect until tonight. we'll take a break on friday from the snow but look at how cold it will be. we could see up to a foot of snow between now and this weekend. we'll talk about what that means for bay area rain coming up in five minutes. >> and a look at the travel times, highway 101, top of your screen. delayed by five or six minutes because of the crash in sunnyvale. we'll show you the bigger view coming up. and a very happy thursday to you. now i'm guessing you did not read the fed minutes, but i did as did a lot of investors. what the fed had to say is pushing stomach markets lower. expect more red arrows this morning. here's the deal. the fed says the economy is very strong, and so they'll likely hike interest rates. this may surprise you that news

of a strong economy pushes stocks lower but it's important to understand the economy and the stock market are not the same thing. twitter is back in the news this morning. it's cracking down on fake accounts again and it's rushing to give students from parkland, florida, those verified blue check marks. kids like david there. conservatives have been accusing hog of being an actor not a student from stoneman douglas high school. he is a student. and twitter wants to make sure you know that. uber starts its uber express pool today. it's cheaper than uber pool. also, we'll talk about driverless cars as well. really interesting thing in the news this morning, the san francisco business times says that driverless cars without a driver at all, a robot car completely by itself on the road may come very soon. maybe as soon as april. i have a little videotape of me in a driverless car.

of course i'm sitting in the back seat at the time. maybe we can show it to you -- there we go. this is a driverless car. now there is a fellow behind the steering wheel, of course. that's how we do robot cars these days, right? what i'm talking about is the dmv actually changing the rules in april to allow driverless cars without a driver. i have trouble, guys, coming up with a word for that because we already talked about driverless cars, right? but there's always an engineer in the driver's seat ready to take over. what i'm saying is empty cars. empty cars on our streets in april. >> there you go. >> it's amazing! >> it is. we'll be following that one closely. half moon bay leaders reportedly think they have a win-win solution to the growing problem of litter left on beaches. according to the san mateo daily journal the city plans to launch a coastal cleanup pilot program in april and they've led to

higher homeless people to be the trash collectors that program includes a partnership with local homeless nonprofit groups. workers will remove graffiti and horse manure wherever necessary. a story out of the uk. meet mrs. frisbee, the gray seal, found on a beach with a frisbee. very sad. it's hard to look at. we have good news to report this morning that after months of tender care and plenty of food, she's back in the wild. her rescuers say her case is very common and is a good reminder to always pick up after yourself when you're at the beach. we have coastal cleanup days here but more and more there's so much trash out this and look at the damage it can do. mrs. frisbee is doing great. >> a beautiful little seal there. >> completely changing the topic

but still on mrs. frisbee, isn't there a book that talks about mrs. frisbee at school? >> i don't know that one. >> someone send me a tweet. >> i don't know that one. kari has a look at our forecast today. probably not a good day for the beach. >> not at all. it's going to be windy, at times wet, and not to mention cold. so we are starting out with chilly temperatures this morning and a little bit of some rain. storm ranger tracking that for us. that's the red beam you're seeing going around the bay area from san jose and that's our mobile doppler radar truck. the only thing we have going on snow on mt. hamilton really coming down. i'll be watching that. our temperatures are in the upper 40s for san francisco. freezing in santa rosa. we do have a wide range of temperatures as you get ready to head out the door. it is a chilly start. the seven-day forecast is up at the bottom of the screen and our highs today will be reaching into the mid-50s. so this will be cooler than yesterday. make sure you have on lots of layers and also the umbrella and

those winds kicking up from the northwest going to make it feel chilly out there and we could have some gusts up to 30 miles an hour today. 56 will be the high. 52 today in half moon bay. san francisco, 53 degrees. the mission district. and 54 in novato. as we go throughout the day, a chance of rain all day long but it won't be raining all day. this is what it looks like. we start to see these passing showers coming through. by 10:30 we see the chance of rain for the north bay and just hit-or-miss showers around the bay area into the afternoon. a few of these little cells may contain some small hail, maybe even rumbles of thunder. i'm watching for that. the long-range outlook brings them rain monday and we'll see that sweeping on through. a larger storm system moving in on wednesday. it is looking really good in terms of our rain as we look at how much we could see, the potential that as we go into next week we may be measuring anywhere from half an inch for

welcome back to "today in the bay." it's 5:24. new this morning a new strategy to fight the brutal flu season. doctors are giving a second flu shot to some patients. children between the ages of 6 months and 8 years old vaccinated for the first time this season should get the second flu shot. the same goes for anyone over the age of 65. >> getting a second flu shot hurt in any way? >> it wouldn't be a bad idea and is unlikely to cause any harm. if it's a case where somebody is in a situation where they got an early season vaccination and we have a long flu season that it might be a good idea for those patients to get a second flu immunization. >> for the most part most doctors say healthy adults should be fine with that one initial shot. you hope you got it. more details on what doctors are calling the first flu season in years. here in california so far this year there have been 185 deaths

in california. 37 deaths in the bay area alone. expect to get another update from public health tomorrow. now to a story you will only see this morning on "today in the bay." our cameras got an exclusive sneak peek at a new hospital under construction in san francisco. it will provide more options for folks in that area. the campus will eventually replace the current hospital known as the st. luke campus. the new facility on valencia and cesar chavez street will have 125. and will have an emergency room four times the size of the current one at st. luke's. we spoke with the director of nursing who says the hospital will be ready to address the needs of the growing community. >> we want to fill this hospital up. my site administrator, my goal and dream is to open on august 25th and be flooded with new

showers for your morning it's 5:30 on your thursday morning. right now looking out, you could see some spotty showers for your morning commute. a live look at sfo right now, our radar on the upper left. not a lot of rain but some in the south bay, the east bay that kari was reporting this morning. i searched for the umbrella in the car. good morning to you. i'm laura garcia. >> we want to get a better look this morning. meteorologist kari hall. and we've seen light rain as the rain tapers off. seeing some snow on mt. hamilton this morning for much of the bay area. we have a chance of rain throughout the day. seeing the snow on top of mt.

hamilton, it's a chilly morning as you get ready to head out. look at that, 32 degrees now in napa. cooler than yesterday, up to 56 degrees for san jose and napa in observing and san francisco. we'll head to the weekend and that forecast in five minutes. we're looking over here because the off ramp has been closed by chp and palo alto helping with a crash and there may be several major injuries over there. we'll track that in our newsroom, it's very early, hard to have people to talk to. as you walk to the expressway,

great america parkway, other than that the rest of the south bay is great. a look at the bay bridge. we do have the backup that forms early and packed in there very quickly. >> right now we have breaking news to tell you about. we don't see much but i can tell you crews are being called to the scene of a fire at a strip mall. this is happening on amador plaza road and boulevard and 680. there are additional reports this is a pallet fire that may have been moving close to home. bob redell is heading to the scene. he should be there in about 20 minutes. in the south bay -- >> this is new for you this morning. a lengthy slow speed chase comes

to a dramatic end. >> kris sanchez live near 680 with how officers were finally able to get that driver who just wouldn't stop. >> reporter: hi there, laura and marcus. this was a chase that didn't pose a danger because of the speeds. it was about 65, 75 miles an hour but the way the woman was driving definitely did put the public in danger. it finally came to an end with a spike strip here in san jose. it started with a number of 911 calls about a suspected drunk driver and chp officers from redwood city tracked the driver of a honda weaving across lanes of traffic in palo alto. officers tried to stop her there. the woman behind the wheel just took off. officers continued to follow her from southbound 101 to highway 85 to i-280 before she made it northbound 680 where officers had the spike strip waiting for her. the car came to a stop.

the chp says the woman still would not get out of the car. officers broke out her windows, took her from the car and put her in cuffs. chp tells us once they had the woman out of the car they did see signs of impairment. we did see she was taken into custody and put in the back of the patrol car facing serious charges this morning. if you've ever wondered when you see a car on a freeway or roadway and that driver looks to be impaired, what should you do? the answer to this story, call 911. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> got to do our part. thank you very much, kris. at 5:34, new this morning, a strip mall goes up in flames in hayward. this is the video you can see the fire coming out of the top of the building, firefighters trying to hose it down. they surrounded the building off of mission boulevard and carlos bee boulevard. firefighters managed to get it under control before it spread any further. there are ten abandoned businesses, transients are known to hang out.

the cause is still under investigation. >> you know the saying no good deed goes unpunished. that's especially true this morning for one fair field woman who believed she was helping a homeless woman get out of the bitter cold. sharon struck up a conversation monday night with that homeless woman at her neighborhood mcdonald's and the woman she knew as lynn. after noticing lynn had no real winter clothes, she convinced it would be okay to let her stay at herself. lynn acted erratically and left the living room two nights ago, lynn left the house along with something that was not hers. >> i went right to this table back over here where i always kept my car keys and they weren't there. >> she heard the car being backed out of the driveway but got outside too late. now she's just hoping she gets her car back. it is a 2011 midnight blue mazda

suv. you saw it on the screen, one similar to that. if you've seen it you are asked to contact fairfield police. at 5:35 this morning, a skateboarder injured when police tried to break up a large gathering is reportedly suing the city for damages. police tried to break up a gathering in delores park. one officer is shown walking into the path of a skateboarder who then struck a patrol car and was injured. according to "the chronicle" the suit claims the officer's actions were malicious and intentional. the skateboarder suffered injuries. hard to watch. new this morning, the warriors appear ready to put their own stamp on a longtime sports tradition. the tradition has been the champions visit the white house. president trump last fall disinvited the warriors. next tuesday the ws make their one and only trip to washington. the team has come up with another plan involving a tour that will also include d.c.-area children but it won't volume politi politics. our bob redell is looking into

the story and will join us with more information coming up. and a smooth drive. notice the difference here. dry anywhere north of the san mateo and dumbarton bridges. overnight rain. not really disturbing the morning commute. what is more of an issue this crash on city streets in palo alto on the expressway. a major roadway and a crash being addressed by palo alto. chp shut down that expressway. we can use the embarcadero from what i understand and we know they're very close over there. watch for local traffic control and we're continuing to follow that as well with palo alto pd. over here the tri-valley does move well. we are hearing about a possible fire here. be careful. we talk about you and the dark shot from our traffic camera off 680 near the strip mall there. and looking at a crash further

north on 680 that may be blocking but very light traffic in that area. that's better news. to the bay bridge, it is not light traffic. it is heavy traffic at the toll plaza itself. the metering lights have done their job better on treasure island. >> just around the corner and, therefore -- >> i heard you say treasure island. that's where one of the events i'm featuring will be this week. there's a lot going on, but the weather at times will be kind of chilly starting out in the morning in the 30s. our highs reaching up to 55 degrees for the coast, inland areas up to 59 degrees, a lot of sunshine so that makes you feel better although the clouds will move in on sunday. if you want some sun saturday is the day to get out there. the lunar new year on redwood city. that going on from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 and is going to be chilly

to start, only 49 degrees. wear lots of layers. it's a fun event to check out. and treasure island the flea market happening there and it's going to be mardi gras themed. that will be a cool thing to check out, the sales going on there and the food trucks and only reaching up to 53 degrees. it's going to be windy, too. up to lake shasta. a mostly sunny week, but our highs into the upper 40s and some very cold morning temperatures. the russian river valley up to 58 degrees. the warmest day will be on sunday with some sunshine. and if you're planning to go to santa cruz, maybe not the best beach week but, hey, it will be nice to be somewhere you can hear the waves and the wind and see that sunshine. it's going to be up to 58 degrees on saturday and on sunday. going hiking in yosemite this weekend it will be freezing all weeklong only making it one degree above freezing. yes, that's for the high on

5:43. we're almost to friday and as you head out the door it is a mostly dry start in san jose after some early morning sprinkles anyway be able to see that out there as you head out. evergreen, a mix of sun and clouds. look at that. we could see some rain moving in by noontime and that continues off and on through the afternoon. more on that and what else is ahead coming up in five minutes. >> the east bay over to the bay bridge, things are starting to slow for the east shore freeway and for 580 coming up into the maze. we'll show you coming up. a ferry exploding near a mexican resort.

there's a massive explosion. this happened yesterday. that's about an hour south from cancun. remarkably all are expected to survive. no word yet on what cause that had explosion. starting today the sin mark theater chain is banning big bags of purses all in the name of safety. theters from vallejo to san jose, a very strong bay area presence. under this new policy bags cannot be larger than 12x12 inches unless it's a diaper bag. one theater goer understands. >> i guess it is necessary. >> the regal theater change has a policy of inspecting customer bags. >> a plan to use so-called tiny

homes to house the homeless. right now city leaders are considering relocations at possible sites. those tiny homes could be used to house several dozen homeless people. the decision on the plan may be made this summer. they are scheduled over the next week. the first meeting takes place tonight at 6:00 at the leininger community center on kelley park. a begugun-free school is a magnet for bad people. >> arming teachers. >> he qualifies that, marcus. he says he wants teachers and coaches with military experience or special training experience, his words, to carry weapons. the president estimates that would be about 20% of our teachers. he does say teachers would be able to fire back if a savage

it's still happening. >> now, as we americans debate on what should happen next, it's gotten ugly on social media. we talk about it yesterday. this morning i want to bring up one particular claim on the internet. president trump cleared the way for some mentally ill people to obtain guns. people who had been banned by president obama. it's actually true. president trump did that. the facts are way more complicated. i haven't got time to go through them now but there's a video i made explaining why many people, even liberals, think trump made the right decision, why some people classified as mentally ill should be allowed to buy a gun. i'll walk you through it and will link to that on my twitter and facebook. you want to argue, argue from that. >> thanks. the time is 5:47. the annual water mark conference for women is about to get under way tomorrow in san jose.

hamilton and you're seeing other clusters to the north. those are the wind turbines. right now not tracking any rain but it is being picked up on storm ranger. now as we look at the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen, it is going to be fairly chilly over the next several days and really cold this morning. in the north bay it's freezing in napa. 32 degrees. 42 degrees in livermore. we'll see our highs today reaching into the mid to upper 50s, all around the bay area some gusty wind. you do need to dress in layers make sure you have on a coat and the umbrella. good options to have some long sleeves and pants today. something that will keep you nice and warm even as we will have some fairly mild weather later on this afternoon but i want to show you what the radar could look like, the potential of showers popping up in the north bay and moving off to the south, very hit or miss, not all of the bay area will see it. when you do see it it's going to
