another cold one. >> another cold one. you do have to wear lots of layers and bundle up. i feel like a broken record saying that, but we will have another very chilly start. a live look outside in fremont as you get ready to step out the door, we are in the upper 30s there, we will still be in the 30s and 40s through about 8:00 and only make it into the mid 50s today, but at least it will be sunny. we will take a look ahead to that weekend forecast. mike, you are still tracking that truck trash in sunol. here is our video that our photographer ethan took over there. you see obviously that's the truck on its side. two trailers there, one 10,000 pounds the other 12,000 pounds, that's what i'm told. that person right there is sweeping some of the debris off the roadway. they have to right the rig and then clear it. we will show you where that is on the map. that is, again, highway 84 just off of 680. folks traveling up or down 680 or traveling into or out of livermore via this route will be concerned. right there the slowing about two miles where the slowing and

brake tapping starts. i've seen it get slower at little valley, there is a horse breeder there and a driveway, people can go into the driveway and back on. we are still okay for the cut through between 580 and 680. crash right here just off of 680. we are waiting for another update from chp. we are bugging them a lot. sorry, but we need to tell everybody what's going on. everything else is moving smoothly, guys. new this morning more shaking in the area around danville, this is tied to recent quake swarm. the usgs says since midnight numerous small squaks have rattled the area. the biggest 2.8 at 3:25. then a 2.7 one hour earlier. this makes at least ten dwaks between 2.6 and 3.0 over the past two weeks. scientists say that that shaking is tied to a plate that actually pushes mt. diablo higher. bringing the gun control

gate to the bay area. a bay area congressman is holding a town hall this weekend to discuss what needs to be done to make sure something like this never happens again. "today in the bay's" pete suratos joins us live in lafayette with what could be talked about tomorrow. good morning, pete. >> reporter: good morning. you will have u.s. congressman dark dee sal knee a who represents a number of cities in nth kro county holding that town hall behind me at stanley middle school in lafayette. he represents several cities and much like we're seeing a o cross the country even at the white house with president trump we're seeing kind of this discussion moving forward when it comes to gun control in this country. now, he says this town hall was prompted by the events that took place in florida with that florida school shooting but he says they were eventually going to have a town hall on this very topic, but what he says he is happy to see is that the youth are leading this discussion this time around and they're really pushing that discussion forward. >> you know, these young people

make a difference. their passion, their absolute authenticity and it's just we've gone through this since columbine, so many of these. >> reporter: what you guys are looking at on your television screen is information on this town hall, it will take place tomorrow here in lafayette at stanley middle school between 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. a gun violence prevention town hall. now, the way it's going to work, they will have a panel of speakers and researchers from davis and stanford to talk about gun violence, then the congressman will speak for a little bit on how the gun control debate or if think legislation will be worked on in the upcoming future. they are encouraging folks in the public to attend, especially young folks to help continue with this discussion. live in lafayette, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> certainly on the top of a lot of people's minds. thank you, pete. in florida the big story this morning the shot that so many people are feeling about parkland's armed security guard

deciding not to confront the shooter during the rampage. this video shows school resource officer scot peterson three years ago at a board meeting. late yesterday the broward county sheriff talked about surveillance video he says shows peterson avoiding the building where so many students were getting shot. >> what i saw was a deputy arrive at the west side of the building 12, take up a position and he never went in. >> now, that video has not been made public. as for scot peterson, the sheriff says that he resigned after he told he was being suspended without pay. now, the sheriff also says that he's sick to his stomach over the latest findings. now to a disturbing story in the south bay. twin brothers are behind bars this morning, san jose say they arrested the man on your left, clinton pappadakis for possession of child pornography.

pappadakis is a track coach at oak grove high school. last year police arrested his twin brother clifford pappadakis for also having child important and taking inappropriate pictures of young girls at school. a former peninsula teacher who pleaded no contest to molestation is to be sentenced today. anthony satriano took suggestive photos of young girls. he is suspected to receive up to eight years in prison. this case made headlines last year when prosecutors unsuccessfully tried to have the judge removed because they believed he would be too lenient. making tuition free-for-all city college students is a little trickier than it seems. at least for city college of san francisco. the school is still reportedly trying to receive payments for the landmark new program approved last year by san francisco leaders. the hang up involves a dispute over the vetting process being used for students who apply for

free tuition. as a result the school says that it's still owed about $4 million from the city to cover last year's tab. continuing coverage now, the 2018 olympic winter games. norway continues to lead in overall medals with 36, canada is now in second place, germany has fallen to third. the u.s. close behind in fourth place with 21 medals. you can see the netherlands and trans rounding out the top six. now, the americans just came up short in last night's ladies figure skating finals. this was team u.s.a.'s worst finish ever. >> "today in the bay's" garvin thomas has been talking with fremont's karen chen and, garvin, tell us how she's feeling this morning. >> reporter: marcus, i have had the pleasure of intervening karen chen at least half a dozen times over the past year on her road, on her journey to pyeongchang. she has always been incredibly composed, but moments after she stepped off the ice last night and i talked to her i could tell something was different, she was fighting back tears. this was not the way she wanted

her olympics to end. i should add it's not because she didn't win a medal. even skating great programs, that was probably going to be a long shot for karen chen, butçó she stumbled and fell in her free skate. she ended up finishing in 11th place. what chen says bugs her the most is that she didn't show the world and her family, some who traveled from the bay area, some from taiwan, what she is capable of. she says she wasn't sure of her future going into these games but she is sure of it now. >> part of it i think is that tiger and she wanting pre dempgs right away, this is not the olympic experience i've been dreaming about. i want to create that moment for me and i feel like i deserve it and i want to do that. and really i do love skating with all my heart and i really want to train for another four years, build up my reputation, build up my confidence and be back here at the olympics. >> reporter: chen said she wants to attend college as well so

the iphone x is if you hold the power button and one of the volume buttons down at the same time it will call 911. >> that's right, it's like an emergency thing. >> it's a secret, nobody knows you're doing it sort of thing but it's also entirely possible that as the people are putting them back together they're holding down buttons and getting a lot of 911 calls out of that factory. >> interesting. very concerning, too. >> it is. after several close calls at sfo congressman mark desaulnier and two other politicians are calling for an independent review of all flights. last july a close call involving an air canada flight nearly landing on the taxi way, that plane came within 59 feet of other planes waiting to take off. another incident happened in january. the goal of the review is to see if these incidents are isolated event or part of a larger problem. a live look at i-80 in kingvale this morning after the sierra got a huge dumping of snow. if you are heading up there this weekend take your time.

quiet weekend, but told, though. let's get a look at our storm ranger right now, we are all prepared to track these storms coming in next week. we've got our mobile doppler radar, that's the red beam, we have it parked here in san jose. we can move this around if we need to as those storms approach the bay area. so you will want to make sure you keep checking in. our temperatures are below freezing in some spots, look at napa 32 degrees and livermore now the coldest at 29 degrees. it is 39 in san jose and 42 now in san francisco. as we go throughout the day our highs reaches into the low to mid 50s. the rain holding off until monday so you will be able to go through your microclimate and see the forecast for the next few days. in oakland today we will be up to 54 degrees and also 54 in san mateo. san francisco in 52 on the embarcadero and high in the north bay up to 57 degrees in novato. it's going to still be breezy. we will still have these weather

systems passing by. the next one looks like it will be drying up before it gets here heading into the day tomorrow. as we go into early next week we will be tracking more rain moving in. so let's talk about that because this first system moving in on monday looks like some of the heaviest rain will be actually south of the golden gate bridge and that will begin on monday morning. and then with that morning out we will have a couple of days of some mostly dry weather, but we talked about all of the snow that will be coming down in the sierra and some rain for the bay area. so by monday we should get at least about a quarter of an inch of rain for much of the bay area and as we talk about the chinese new year parade happening for tomorrow evening, it is going to be very chilly out there, 52 degrees to start but only some upper 40s by the end of the night. we are going to have some highs in the mid 50s, morning temperatures in the 30s, once again, keep checking back in about the rain next week. mike, you're starting out at the bay bridge. >> i am, because i've been tracking this live shot and we've seen an early backup form and stick.

this is in the cash lanes on either side, the fast track lanes, though, are starting to build a little bit as well. we may have more traffic right now or at least the concern by the traffic management folks that there may be a need to turn on those metering lights. i'm going to check this but so farther not registering on, we just have this crowd just hit over the last 20 minutes. we will look at your map and everywhere else besides that toll plaza or almost everywhere else moves smoothly. it's friday to a lighter volume of traffic, but over here highway 84 it looks great as far as the tri-valley goes on this map, i love and now you can see where the slowing is approaching little valley. things have started to move a little better right there at the scene of that overturned double trailer there and that may indicate some progress on them trying to right those trailers. the waze system, what the alternate routes are, 580 down in toward fremont this purple route is 5 to 10 minutes better than trying to go through that area where you will eventually have to come past the big rig

getting help from some special friends in morning in the wake of last week's tragic school shooting. >> the k-9 comforting crew making the rounds to try to ease the feelings of grief and distress. golden retrievers have a busy schedule, they've been stopping at churches, hospitals and the 17 crosses outside of the marjory stoneman douglas high school. their goal is to get victims to open up. >> there is no explanation, they just bring happiness in moments of sadness like this, they're comforting for you. >> even though everybody is hurting today, animals can bring comfort to them. >> right there by the cafeteria they were able to just talk and hug the dogs. >> isn't that lovely? they stopped at a dozen broward county schools over the last three days and most of the kids are thrilled to meet them. it's nice to see. >> absolutely it is. 5:26 right now. a lot of people talk being that brock turner verdict. there is a real for support for his victim.

twitter. mike, you've been tracking the bay bridge. >> we want to show you this first, the overturned truck, double trailers here over off of highway 84. now tow trucks are on scene and they're trying to right the rig. they may be at times blocking one of those lanes. let me show you the impact on the tri-valley. we have slowing, about a mile back you start to tap the brakes. folks are slowly getting by that scene. if you know where the horse breeder is or maybe the paint ball course it's right by that portion before you get to 680. that is a slower drive. the rest of the bay shows a lighter friday traffic flow. look at the bay bridge toll plaza. they did turn the metering lights on a couple minutes ago as well. there is a backup coming out of the maze. over to you. happening today, stanford students will gather to pressure the university to create a memorial plaque dedicated to brock turner's assault victim. the university canceled plans to put the plaque on campus after

they couldn't agree on the quote to put on t "today in the bay's" bob redell is live. i know a lot of those students say that the university silencing the victim without putting up that memorial. why are they saying that? >> reporter: good morning. the words of brock turner's victim emily doe are so powerful that they have brought the issue of campus sexual assault into a national conversation. some of those words written in a victim impact statement and read in court were to appear on a plaque on this spot that you're looking at in this video right here. this is where brock turner sexual assaulted emily doe as she lay unconscious behind a dumpster back in 2015. the university removed the dumpster and created a quiet space with beverages and a fountain and promised a memorial plaque. the problem is that the university initially agreed to let the victim, emily doe, choose which passage would appear on the plaque but now instead the university has chose part of her statement that reads

in part and i'm quoting here, i'm okay, everything is okay. >> stanford choosing a quote and saying no to everything that she had recommended, that is in a way silencing her yet again. >> reporter: that's why today at 4:00 the group stanford association of students for sexual assault prevention will gather at this spot on campus, call on the university to uphold their promise to the survivor and use the words of her choosing. they also have a petition demanding the same that is now 600 signatures strong. now, we did reach out to stanford university for comment and they declined saying it's a student organized event but a spokesman e-mailed "the new york times" about this story saying that the words emily doe wants to use on the plaque and i'm quoting here, were ny consistent with contemplative space and the intention of a place where members of our community could seek solace, v% unquote. they also believe that those words sheu!bxcdzñ initially cho

actress and activist reese witherspoon will be here. this really is all about empowering women and when we talk about empowering women a lot of that conversation comes back to equal pay. just for illustration purposes i will tell you that according to u.s. census data i make about 20% less than my male colleagues would bringing you this report than they do. let's see how you fall. we pulled up statistics from the u.s. census bureau report. overall for every dollar that a white man makes on average women in the greater san francisco area will make 81%. white women fair the best making 76% of what men make, asian women make 64%, black women make about half of what a white man would make for the same job. latinos making 39% for the same work. in a year this can up to more than $14,000 on average. now, those numbers are from 2016, census data, but the numbers were about the same by

in our forecast in about five minutes. and we are over the nimitz. middle of the screen, that's the bart to oakland airport. we are looking at 880 for a crash a little farther south. we will talk about hayward coming up. the swarms of earthquakes have been hitting the danville area tied to a recent quake storm just within the last half hour or so there was another 3.5 magnitude quake. we're getting calls into our newsroom about that reported shaking. that's one of the largest we have seen after at least 11 quakes between a 2.6 and 3.0 over the past two weeks. it's said to be centered around the diablo area there. scientists say the shaking is tied to a plate that actually is pushing mt. diablo even higher. we will keep tabs on those for you. new this morning a live look in palo alto where the same bay area wide economic problems are having a huge impact on silicon valley. >> the silicon valley leadership group has issued a new report. it finds silicon valley leading

and that will continue into the weekend, but look at how cold it is. it is only 29 degrees in the tri-valley this morning. that's one of the colder spots i'm seeing. also in the north bay 37 and 40 in san francisco as you head out this morning. not supposed to be this cold and we are going to be just a few degrees cooler than yesterday in many spots. reaching into the low to mid 50s with some sunshine today at least that works in our favor, but with those gusty winds it's going to feel cold. getting dressed this morning you do need lots of layers, like a nice warm coat, something that that wind won't chop through. also some sunglasses because it will be clear today, we will get some more sunshine than we did yesterday and layers like a scarf and some nice warm jeans. heading into the next several days we are going to see another storm system moving in, this one on monday starting out our new week we will have scattered showers, it looks to bring us a quarter inch of rain, spotty showers on wednesday and then thursday this will be the big

one, more rain than we've seen in quite a while and also some very heavy sierra snow on the way and as we look at how much rain we will possibly see with this first round on monday, that could bring us some of the heaviest amounts of rain actually souts of the golden gate bridge so i will be tracking that. mike, you have a problem now in hayward. >> we do. there is a crash involving a big rig. even though we have friday light for most of the bay, calling out two spots, this major crash in hayward now we're hearing just got updated chp has issued a sig alert, that means that the traffic alert for you is that this will last a while. we have four of your five lanes reportedly blocked, they may be clearing at least one more soon but it's over on the left side right up near the barrier, that's why it's a distraction for the southbound commute as well. both directions between 92 and 84 that's the san mateo bridge and the dumbarton bridge, the nimitz is really starting to back up there. through the tri-valley 84 now seeing a lot more slowing down toward the crash which is still over at least blocking one lane
