through. >> this event is just getting started and students are still arriving at this memorial where organizers say they're speaking up for emily doe that they say has been silent again. >> numerous signs were up at the site where a young woman was sexually assaulted by brock turner on january 8th, 2015 but the message organizers really want is not here. the group stanford asap, stanford association of students for sexual assault prevention is ups upset were there for emily doe. >> stanford rejected and instead offered quotes such as i'm okay. everything is okay. i'm right here. i'm okay which students saw as inappropriate. >> a stanford student speaking as a race survivor says the

university doesn't do enough to help victims. >> i felt very attacked about two years after brock turner was convicted to convert the assault site. >> without emily's voice here, without her decision and her quote that she chose here it is partially meaningless that stanford made this. >> now just as this event was getting underway i got a statement for stanford. they are absolutely against sexual violence and created this space as a way to embrace suggestions made by emily doe's representatives. they did reject her quotes as inconsistent and even troubling. the university says it offered several alternative quotes but were told by her representatives that she was no longer interested in a quote. we'll have a complete update at our 11:00 newscast.

nbc bay area news. >> thank you. following news out of oakland. historic building went up in flames. you're looking at sky ranger video from 90 minutes ago showing the fire it's on miller avenue near 14th. this used to be a library on the national historic registry. >> jessica, good afternoon, you're exactly right. it is an old library that's been abandoned for decades. what happened earlier today an oakland police officer happened to be driving around in the area and spotted the flames and called it in. that's what set the wheels in motion. let me talk you through what's happening right now. there's water that's been sprayed down from atop the bu d building they need to douse the hotspots. that's step a. a structural engineer will test the integrity of the building and once that's complete they

can have an investigator come in and figure out what started the fire. they could be here for several more hours. as far as the history of the building, we don't know what caused this but people tell me there's been open transparent drug use and prostitution and people regularly coming in and out of this building so i asked the chief whether or not that may have contributed to this or if it was even on their radar. here's what he said. >> i know we have been here before but based on some of the history we had to keep an eye out on this building. we have been here before and we fought this fire just like any other fire. >> we are not very far right now from where the warehouse fire took place about a year and a half ago. we're just off of international boulevard here on miller avenue and as far as the historic aspects that you were referring to earlier yes this is on the

national registry of historical places. it was an open city landmark built in 1914 so it's been around for a century or so. as i said the last couple of decades it's been uninhabited and it's the victim of another fire here in oakland. >> thanks, sam, an earthquake is shaking the east bay. at least 15 small earthquakes have happened in the past 24 hours. the strongest, a 3.6. that hit around 12:15 this afternoon. shops downtown reported shaking. the series of small quakes are happening all along the fault. our crew was interviewing one man about the earthquake storm when suddenly the ground started shaking again. >> did you feel something? >> yes, i do. >> do you feel that? >> no, i didn't feel that. >> did you feel it? it's rumbling. >> right now? oh there it is. yeah. yeah that's an earthquake. >> people filing outside.

a spokesperson says there's no reports of damage. they have posted earthquake preparedness tips on social media. you can track all the earthquakes on our website nbcbayarea.com. >> he's a former football star that went pro but a threat he made shutdown his former high school for the day. it stems from a social media post by jonathan martin that made national headlines after he was bullied by a fellow nfl player. the post reads when you're a bully victim and a coward your options are suicide or revenge. it showed a shotgun and shell cases and included the name of harvard westlake high. after seeing that harvard westlake closed down today. martin played at the school before going to stanford. he later played for the 49ers. we'll bring you the gun control debate to the bay area in the wake of the deadly florida

school shooting. the congressman is holding a town hall tomorrow at lafayette stanley middle school. while the event in florida prompted tomorrow's meeting a discussion on the broader issue was already in the works but he says he is impressed by the outspoken students that survived that florida attack. >> you know these young people make a difference. their passion, their absolute authenticity. and it's just, we have gone through this since columbine, so many of these. >> tomorrow's town hall is open to the public. gun violence researchers will be on hand again. that meeting is at stanley middle school starting at 11:00 in the morning. >> let's go to the olympics. the flame still burning strong. a live look at olympic park in south korea. the winter games may be winding down but the excitement certainly isn't. many people still buzzing about ladies figure skating last night. a fierce competition on the ice for the olympic athletes from

russia. a mentor and her protege battled it out in a free skate. karen chen finished 11 overall and mirai nagasu is facing backlash after comments. >> i did my triple axle and i made history and it's been -- after that program i was ready to go home. >> well, many said she was imlying some of her other teammates didn't do enough. she also said her free skate was her audition for dancing with the stars. look for high flying stunts. three americans vying for the podium in men's snowboard. big air. also coming up tonight the four man bobsled and the driver for team usa, nick cunningham. the u.s. looking to improve after a 21st place finish in a two-man bobsled earlier this week. a lot on the line.

48 hours left. six events. it begins at 5:00 here on nbc bay area. we have the three to watch. go to nbc bay area.com to find out the top stories coming out of the olympics. >> a multimillion dollar price tag on a home isn't unheard of in the bay area but this is raising eyebrows. the tower has been sinking and leaning causing many people to sell their condos at a loss. this week a seller listed a 2 bedroom condo for the bold price of nearly $6 million. that's almost double what the seller paid for it. engineers are looking into a possible solution that could keep the tower from leaning which may explain the bold asking price. >> we have new information on this disturbing story we broke last month. you may remember these photos of raw, uncovered meat being delivered and shopping carts to the market in san jose. our report triggered an investigation by the county health department and usda. then we followed up with health inspectors and learned they

didn't issue any fines or any other penalties for the meat delivery but a spokesperson says instructors witnessed 99 ranch markets throwing out all of that meat they suspected may have been transported. health officials now working to make sure that they comply with california rules regarding food delivery. >> nbc bay area responds to a woman that cancelled her lease right after she moved in. >> the land lord held on to thousands of dollars so she called our consumer team. the investigator is here to explain what happened next. >> stephanie bell told us she rented an apartment from stone ridge apartments, site unseen this past june. she said it was too dirty to live in. the complex offered an alternative apartment. stephanie said the condition of that one was also unacceptable and at that point, she says the apartment terminated her lease. here's the thing. stephanie says the land lord kept her deposit and rent, a total of more than $3,000.

hello again from south korea. we're getting to the point in these olympics where the competition is winding down and people are starting to think about the next olympics. if people here are curious about what is coming up, there is one place they can go to find out, the tokyo 2020 japan house. this will be the second time japan has hosted the summer olympics. they have hosted the winter games two times as well. 43 venues including 8 new perm nanlt buildings, 25 existing ones and 10 temporary venues will host more than 11,000 athletes competing in 33 different sports. japan promises this will be the most technologically advanced olympics ever. among the new sports at the 2020 games will be the return of baseball and softball, karake, sport climbing and surfing but

we begin with storm ranger. it's our mobile doppler radar and we are currently dry here from the north bay down to the south bay. so let's bring you outside to our skycam rangers network. beautiful shot here across the bay, looking back toward san francisco. nothing in the way of cloud cover right now. currently, 52 degrees and you can see through tonight heading into san francisco we'll drop down to some colder 40s. we'll begin to see cloud cover starting to move in. that will be the biggest change. we're starting off chilly as you can see. peninsula 40 and for the tri valley a frosty 33 degrees. also close to freezing, 35. san francisco 42 and the east bay a cold start at 38. let's get you a closer look at the cloud cover and by 9:30 in the morning it's mainly increasing from the north bay right down the coastline and then it's more of a partly sunny to mostly cloudy sky by the afternoon.

now a slight chance of showers will be close to the coast, but by all indications right now, we're still calling for a dry forecast. it's just the cloud cover we'll have to deal with. so forecast for tomorrow on saturday it's going to stay cool. you might need that light jacket throughout the afternoon. 59 here in san jose. wind will pick up 10 to 15 miles per hour. 58 here in walnut creek and oakland 56 throughout the peninsula. 52 in half moon bay. maybe you're heading to san francisco. well, 55 here in the mission. nice day for a cup of coffee at one of the many caves there. and right through napa county. temperatures in the upper 50s here especially through sonoma and napa. two changes i want to alert you to as we head throughout next week. the chance of much needed rainfall as we're on track for one of the driest februaries ever in history here for the bay area. a quarter inch on monday but a better chance of heavier
