but if you're in the interior valleys or north bay, look at the temperatures this morning. 27 degrees in santa rosa. 27 degrees in napa. livermore, 27 degrees. down through morgan hill, 29 degrees. san jose is at about 36 degrees this morning. and now near oakland, 37 degrees. now, we're expecting these freezing temperatures to kind of linger through the early morning. eventually we will start climbing into the 50s. but i do want to remind folks, there is still that freeze warning that's in place for san benito and monterey counties in place until 9:00 a.m. because of the low 20s out there. the temperature trend into the afternoon does show a little bit of clouds moving in, but overall we'll be mostly sunny and eventually hitting a high of 55 for san francisco. and then into tonight, you'll start seeing some breezy conditions. but we are tracking two chances of seeing rain in the bay area. one not very big. but the second one looks like it could bring a good amount of

rainfall. so for a time line on that, tune in the next 15 minutes. >> vianey, thanks. is the big one coming? that's what many people want to know after a swarm of earthquakes hit the bay area. this surveillance video captures what it looked like yesterday inside a candy store in downtown danville. the tumbler hit just before 12:20 yesterday afternoon. this was a magnitude 3.5. it was one of many over the last few days, and it was the talk of the town at norm's place, because nearly everyone felt it. >> i was sitting at my desk, and i'm like, wait, what is this? like, what's happening? like, is there another earthquake going on? >> i was watching the glasses rattle and some bottles. and i jumped up out of my chair. i don't know what i thought i was going to do, the usgs reports 16 recent quakes in that part of the east bay. so now people want to know if a bigger tumbler is coming. geologists tell us that answer is no. large earthquakes have not followed swarms in previous years.

be sure to go to our website to track all of the earthquakes that hit the bay area in the past few days. just go to nbcbayarea.com and search bay area earthquake map. we have new video of a fire that tore through an abandoned library in oakland. a viewer took this video just a few blocks away, not long after the fire ignited around 3:00 yesterday afternoon. our sky ranger also is over the flames. the library is located on miller avenue, just east of 880 in oakland. fortunately, no one was hurt. the cause of the fire remains under investigation. fire officials tell us that building has been burned before. meaning arson could be a possibility. students staging a walkout to protect gun violence get violent themselves. police say the students walked out of their stockton school to protect gun violence, and that things got out of hand when some of the students blocked the streets, and at one point began throwing rocks at cars, including police cars.

>> i'm really upset that -- i'm on my way to school. like, i go to delta college. so i'm on my way to school, and i can't even get in my car now. i'm about to cry. >> wow. police did arrest five people. these protests, of course, come in the wake of last week's shooting massacre at a florida high school. meanwhile, it was an emotional return to that school in parkland, florida. teachers and staff went back to stoneman douglas high school. a heavy police presence was visible where a teen gunman shot and killed 17 people. an armed sheriff's deputy who was on duty at the school that day was fired after security video showed he never entered éfrzpez/lvñcv%y@íñg that attackx it's a disturbing story we broke last month, and now we have new information from our investigative unit. you may remember these photos of raw, uncovered meat being delivered in shopping carts to the 99 ranch market in san jose.

well, our exclusive report triggered an investigation by the county health department, and the usda. we have learned county health inspectors did not issue any fines, nor any other penalties for the meat delivery. inspectors instead say they witnessed 99 ranch market throwing out all of that questionable meat. health officials are now working with the grocery store to make sure they comply with state rules regarding food delivery. switching gears now, just two days remain at the 2018 winter olympics in pyeongchang, south korea. can you believe how fast it went in a live look at the olympic flame, which will be extinguished tomorrow night. but team usa is on fire, closing out the competition strong. jay gray has the history-making story, live for us this morning from olympic park in pyeongchang. it must be sad that it's all coming to an end. >> reporter: yeah, kira, it is coming to an end. but, boy, is team usa ending

"today in the bay" has the wave of relief from his friends. >> when they said his name, i knew it was him. >> reporter: victoria says they have been on pins and needles the last several days. >> i'm doing fine. i'm happy. overwhelmed, you know? just so happy to hear the good news they found allan. >> reporter: the last time anyone saw him was last saturday. chow set off on a hiking trip. around noon, national park rangers spotted him by helicopter. he was resting at the top of the falls near the reservoir. rangers say he had access to water and had food with him. he >> he's the type of guy that's always prepared. he always overpacks, so this

san francisco from san bruno mountain, some clouds, but we will mostly see sunshine today. it will, however, remain very cold. you can see 36 degrees on your screen there. vianey arana will be along in just a moment with your microclimate forecast. silicon valley leaders and hollywood celebrities joined thousands of women for an impassioned gathering at the watermark women's conference in san jose. front and center on the agenda, empowering women. speakers talked to the attendees about the metoo movement. leadership, gender, equity and parity in the workplace. amal clooney, one of the speakers, told the crowd what women need is equal opportunity. reese witherspoon who, by the way, started her own production company, says sometimes you have to create your own opportunities. >> the issue for women is not bare numbers. it's about making sure we have the same opportunities and the same rewards. as men do. and i think we're not there yet.

>> how many women in this room have saved themselves? you don't turn to somebody next to you and go, what are we gonna do, and allow are you going to help me? you pick yourself up, you get a new job. you leave that relationship and you save yourself. >> i like that advice. this is the fifth year, by the way, of the watermark conference. you have probably driven past it hundreds of times without noticing. but one of the most powerful lasers in the world sits alongside 280 on the peninsula, and it's about to get a lot more powerful. this maze of pipes and magnets sits underground not far from stanford. slack as it's called is at the national accelerator laboratory right there on san hill road. they're putting in new super-fast x-ray lasers. i don't know if that's the official term. which are expected to improve our research into health care, air pollution, and even drug testing. >> rve tthe accelerator today b

120 electrons per second and will go up to 1 million burst per second. >> the project will cost $1 billion. let's check in with vianey arana with our forecast. it is literally freezing out there. >> yeah, it is. so grab your coat. and if you're inside, stay in there for a little bit longer. >> yeah, stay with us. >> at least until the temperatures warm up a little bit. but you know what, though, it is looking mighty beautiful outside. look at san francisco. clear skies. nice and crisp. it's one of those mornings where you're like, man, the air feels really crisp and nice. that's exactly what we're seeing this morning. but it is very cold in some spots, and now we are tracking our next chance of rain. and as you very well know, we have been talking about it. we do have our very own stormranger, and it is up and it is scanning. and it's all set and ready to go for the arrival of not one but two storm systems headed towards the bay area. so i'll give you a time line on that. let's talk about these current

temperatures. because, boy, look at these 20s in the north bay. 27 degrees right now in santa rosa. 27 degrees in napa. and then down near morgan hill, also in the 20s. so really just a lot of these interior valleys. as forecasted, really had some freezing temperatures and we can expect to see these 20s slowly starting to warm up but not much. san jose 36 right now. hayward, 35. and a quick reminder, we have a couple freeze warnings in place. and that's in place for san benito and monterey county. so where you see the highlighted purple, that's a freeze warning. we did see a couple spots in the higher elevation areas, the monterey county area with a hard freeze. and we can expect to see frosty conditions. if you wake up this:nqrning and see some frost on your windshield, that's probably why. now, as for the bay area, overall, we're okay. no freeze watches for our area or warnings. but it's still cold out there. another thing you're going to notice into the afternoon is once the sun comes out into the dinner hour around 6:00, 7:00, 8:00, we'll start to see some breezy conditions yet again.

not as windy as it got in some spots yesterday, but still enough to be a little bit noticeable. especially near livermore, 15 miles per hour. o orinda, 19 miles per hour. 18 miles per hour in san francisco. half moon bay, 22. skmoe san jose, 13 miles per hour. whenever it gets windy, the wind chill really makes it even colder out there. it's what makes it feel colder than it really is. that's what a wind chill stands for. east san jose expecting a high of 57. so the good news, we will be 3 to 4 degrees warmer in some spots. at this hour than we were yesterday. concord, 60 degrees expected for today. danville, 59. oakland, 56. along the peninsula, we'll stay in the low to mid 50s for the most part. san francisco, topping out at about 55 degrees. 53 for the embarcadero and for the north bay, upper 50s. 50 degrees for sonoma, novato at 58. so let's talk about that rain. we have a number of systems but

the one that could possibly bring a couple of spotty showers late into tomorrow night for the north bay is making its arrival in -- i want to say between 8:00 or 9:00. far north bay. so we're talking ukia area could see showers. look at this fast forward time line through monday, by 9:00 a.m., right before the early morning commute and through the morning commute, a chance of seeing some widespread showers. now, that one, it's not really going to bring a significant amount of rain total, but then we've got another one on the way. and this one is expected to make its arrival on thursday. and that one is really going to be widespread from thursday through friday, possibly even creeping into your saturday. another thing you're going to notice, more snow is on the way for the sierra. even though already got a good amount of snowfall. so definitely expecting a pretty active next couple of days. so let's go ahead and look at the next seven days. 51 degrees as we head into monday. monday, thursday and friday, those are the three days that we're monitoring right now. with stormranger up and scanning

of the state park about 30 miles south of half moon bay, where elephant seals gather to breed -- block and her team return each fall to check in on another. >> here he is, right here. >> reporter: seasonal visitor. >> whoa! >> reporter: for about four months every year, these waters are ruled by the ocean's most skilled predators. white sharks. >> white sharks utilize our coastal waters where they're highly protected. they're focused in on sea lions and elephant seals here. here we go, taking a turn in close. >> reporter: stanford researchers have spent the past two decades tagging white sharks with electronic transmitter to track their movements. >> coming up on the decoy. >> you've got it. >> reporter: the tags ping a receiver on a buoy, uploading the information to satellite. >> decoy in. >> reporter: but the key to this high-tech operation is a low-tech piece of carpet cut out in the shape of a sea lion. >> coming in close.

>> whoa! >> reporter: using the lure and a scent in the water, the team draws the sharks to the boat to try and attach a tag. >> reel it in. reel the decoy in. >> once again, turning off just -- >> reporter: in addition to the eyes in the boat, the team sticks cameras in the water to try and identify the sharks. there is even a camera on the lure. >> each wedge shark has a unique dorsal fin. we can tell who the shark is based on the patterns of its fins. >> this is rudolph. see the white tip on his nose? scarface is over here. >> so what shall we name this -- >> flash. that was flash. >> reporter: on the noavo, they head to open seas halfway between baja california, and

although they won't say why. the university is suggesting a different quote, so students are now holding a rally on campus, demanding the school stick with the original quote, saying anything else is tantamount to silencing victims of sexual assault. >> i thought it was an insult to all survivors and the entire stanford community. it is a horrible representation of sexual violence. >> stanford told nbc bay area that emily doe's representatives say she now is no longer interested in a quote. a serial bank robber finally under arrest. san jose police say he robbed three banks within the past month. on the right is surveillance photo that helped police identify him. police caught up with him at the great mall in milpitas. a weekend drive down to the beach will slow down starting today. crews are repairing part of highway 17 that has drainage problems. caltrans says it's the final

set. all right, the warriors continue their quest to win a third nba championship in four years. the team's new arena is starting to take shape. take a look at the chase center in san francisco. the practice court and basketball offices already are forming. nbc bay area sky ranger was over the construction site in the mission bay neighborhood. officials say the arena is about 40% done. and it's still on target to open for the 2019, 2020 nbc season. we have much more ahead on "today in the bay." finally, encouraging news about the flu epidemic. what the latest cdc report reveals. and it may be 36 degrees right now in woodside, but believe it or not, some spots are waking up to the 20s. we're talking about freezing temperatures. but i'm also tracking our next chance of rain in the bay area. i'll have the details coming up just after the break. stay with us.

watching us now, look at this gorgeous shot of squaw creek, lake tahoe, 14 degrees out there. and looks like more snow is headed towards the sierra. i'll give a complete breakdown but i just wanted to show that gorgeous shot this morning. in the south bay, 36 degrees. 36 in the peninsula. 27 for the tri valley. and it's also in the 20s for the north bay. 27 degrees waking up very cold. san francisco at about 41 degrees, and the east bay, about 37 degrees. now, there is still that freeze warning this morning for the interior valleys in san benito and monterey. this will be in place at least through 9:00 a.m. today, and don't be surprised by some frosty windshields this morning. as far as the rest of the area, we're doing a-okay. let's talk about the next chance of rain. we have our stormranger and mobile doppler radar, and that will be making its way to some of the higher elevation areas as we head in towards sunday night and into monday, because we're tracking two incoming storm systems.

but as we head into later tonight, we are going to see the wind start picking up into the evening hours, right around dinnertime. if you notice, 19 miles per hour expected to be gustier into the evening hours. and overnight, once again, we will be seeing some of those freezing temperatures for the interior valleys. now, as far as your moik microclimate highs today, we will be in the upper 50s. 59 degrees for san jose. heading toward the east bay, the lower end of 50s for vallejo. concord a little bit warmer at 60 degrees. so some spots running a couple degrees warmer. and sunday we'll be even warmer. some spots furthering up into the mid 60s for tomorrow. san mateo, about 55 degrees for today. san francisco will be topping out at 55 degrees, and for the north bay, also expect mid to upper 50s in the forecast. now, let's talk about that incoming rain. so that first storm system is expected to make its way in late sunday night into early monday morning. so our best chance of catching some of that rain is going to

come right around your commute. so your early-morning commute on monday could be a very wet one. remember to be careful out on the roads. take some extra time. and then that storm system will kind of push its way through, clearing out on wednesday into thursday, we'll catch a break from the rain. so the first storm system not really a big rain-make e but a second storm system coming into play on thursday. and if you notice, all of that white and even blue shades you see here, that's where that snow is going to come into play for the sierra. and this is expected to be a good rain-maker. sticking around through friday and even maybe saturday of this upcoming weekend. now, monday, 51 degrees into tuesday and wednesday, we'll stick to the 50s. the second storm system makes its way into thursday, 52 degrees. if you notice, this is going to be the biggest rain-maker. but we are still tracking that rain as we head in towards monday. so it looks like we finally have some moisture heading in our direction. kira? >> thank goodness at long last. vianey, thanks. just shy of 7:29. still ahead on "today in the

bay," bay area bus drivers attacked by passengers. you think it would be rare, but we've discovered it's been going on for years. we investigate why so many drivers are working in fear, and what's being done after we started asking questions. monday.

it )ll be busy, scott mcgrew? and - return of the rain. stormranger - tracking a wet start to the work week. reporting more flu-related deaths. bu the state health department is reporting more flu-related deaths. but there is some good news this morning. this flu season may have finally peaked. 17 more people died from the flu last week, bringing the total in

california to 202 deaths. we're likely to see the flu circulate until april. but the cdc says the good news at this point is that flu hospitalizations are going down. more than 170,000 people ride the buses every day, and ac transit drivers tell us they are under attack. it's all being caught on video, sometimes putting riders right in the middle. senior investigative reporter, vicki nguyen, shows us what she found. >> reporter: good morning, these riders were left stranded, forced to get off their bus after the driver was assaulted, a dangerous situation happening all too often. we reviewed more than 200 incidents since 2014. passengers spitting, spraying, slapping, even bites that put riders in danger. they found these attacks happened more frequently than the public or even the transit district knows. and while the agency's safety report show attacks are declining, video we reviewed shows a spike in the attacks

this morning -- some special welcome back. it is our clear the shelter segment this morning. our special guest from pets in need, amanda hardy and irene contreras are here. we have a little terrier mix. you have had a lot of terriers lately, it seems. and they're popular. just small, cute little lap dogs. sometimes quite energetic. tell us about valentine. >> yeah, valentine is very energetic. so he's about a year-and-a-half old. any family would be a good fit for him. preferably someone that is on the active side, because he's very playful. >> and maybe someone with a little yard or who lives near a park. >> yeah, that would be -- >> for some space. will he get much bigger than that? >> no, he's full-grown. >> full-grown. so just perfect size for a purse. i've never been a purse dog -- dog in a purse kind of person. but he really does fit the mold,

doesn't he? he's so cute and available for adoption already. >> yes, he is. >> and you always -- you spay, you neuter, you microchip, you do all the vaccinations, so these puppies are always ready to go. it's a great service that you offer for people. and it's not just dogs. you have cats, as well. and we are about to enter kitten season. you get just this influx. and shelters across the country, really. you get just an influx of kittens, so you're doing something proactive. >> yes. >> to kind of help with that. >> yes. so we send all of our neonatal kittens eight weeks and younger out to foster homes. so we're offering classes on how to care for them. >> yeah, because fostering is great, not only for you guys and helps empty your shelter and socialize the pets before they get adopted, but it helps people like me who are not ready to commit to a dog or a cat
