florida school shooting. today a local lawmaker addressed this issue in a local townhall. >> christy joins us live with more. >> reporter: hi. how are you? the congressman holds many of these townhalls but this one was absolutely packed. people showing up today wanting to know how real change can happen. >> it was a middle school in lafayette. one teacher asked about supporting what he calls gun violence prevention laws. >> banning assault weapons, instituting government buyback and destruction of banned weapons. >> that's easy. yes. >> the east bay democrat said the townhall on gun violence prevention was moved up the calendar after the school shooting in florida. he shared statistics and told the crowd he learned a lifetime f rating from the nra.

>> 300 gun violence bills. none of them have had a hearing or a vote. >> i have seen an awful lot of solution elements at work here in california. >> president trump said to give guns to teach with military training. >> i think they should make the law hard tore get guns. >> as far as background checks and regulations, that's fine. most gun owners that i know feel that way. when you want to take away our rights, that's what we have problems with. >> at one point, tensions rose as the media spoke of him. what most people asked for was action from washington. the congressman told us they only planned to hold one town meeting on this topic. but now it looks like they will probably have more. reporting live in lay fayette,

christie smith, nbc bay area news. state democrats are in san diego this weekend as part of a three-day convention. that comes amid the release of a democratic memo, rebuttal to a gop memo claiming the fbi and justice department abused their powers to spy on a trump campaign official. it comes two weeks after president trump blocked it. it contained classified and sensitive information. nancy pelosi released this statement, it is imperative that republicans in congress end their political charades. the congress must finally come togeth together. america's intelligence and national security are at stake. >> just about 90 minutes from now, the annual chinese new year parade in san francisco kicks off. more than a million people expected to take part in all the festivities already under way. live from the street fair in chinatown and ringing in the year of the dog.

hi. >> reporter: that's right. you can see the celebrations are still under way in chinatown. you may be able to hear firecrackers going off. even booths where people are being blessed by buddhist monks. stephanie is overseeing the final touches before these floats hit the streets of san francisco for the annual chinese new year parade. >> the year of the dog is an exciting year for everybody. it is just always fun to work with new creative ideas and new groups. >> organizers say san francisco's is one of the largest outside of china. more than 1 million people are expected to turn out. >> i think it is a good week to celebrate the multicultural lesson of the country, to be able to share. we're asian, so we would like to share our culture. >> folks will make their way through downtown san francisco

officially can be called rock stars. nbc gina kim live in pyeongchang with more on all of that. gina. >> reporter: oh, i like that, terry. we have one more day of olympics. why not? boy, was that a magic moment. that goal we got last night, it was the ninth gold medal of these games. that matches the number we had in the last three olympics. so curling brought us to even steven. it happened in the eighth end. the end is what curling calls innings in baseball. they were 5-5. boom. with one last slide, they doubled their score to 10. and with two ends left, that means they already won. and so they took the podium last night. a funny moment happened there. they were given their gold medals. when they turned it around they

a-c transit bus drivers say assaults against them, are on the well, they are vital is to the community. transit say thefts against them are on the rise ask it's all caught on video. >> vicky win has a special report. >> reporter: these riders were left stranded, forced to get off the bus after their driver was assaulted. it's a dangerous situation that is happening every month. we reviewed more than 200 incidents since 2014 and found these attacks happen more off than the public, or even the transit district, is aware. we want to warn you some of the video is very disturbing.

on any given day or not, this is what a transit driver is up against. passengers spitting, laughing, even physical attacks putting riders in danger. >> the fear is always that you're not coming home. >> reporter: he's thankful he survived the night in 2016. he was trying to guide a passenger off the bus. even offering a free all-day pass. chaos. we shoedz surveillance from that night. he tried to honk his horn for help but the man grabs him in a

choke hold. they continue the attack. good samaritans rush to his side, finally ending the or deal. police arrive eight minutes later. the attacker, gone. >> i am scared to be out there without any protection with any help. >> he is one of several injured drivers we reached out to who say their job leaves them vulnerable to violence. >> do you feel safe in your job? >> no. >> how many of you fear that a driver will lose their life if this continues? >> i do. >> they say they first asked for more protection in 2014. that includes a physical barrier for certain routes similar to ones on muni. they declined to make the changes. each year they update the board

on the number of crimes against drivers. it shows a decline in assault. bus surveillance video was from every reported incident in the past three years. we found they show a spike in attacks called in by drivers during that time. >> transit has to realize the seriousness of the problem. >> the union represents 1300 drivers. they are underreporting the number of assaults to the public, she says. >> we want to know when any member says they've been assaulted. >> it is very shocking. >> the chief officer for ac transit. >> so your reports show assaults are on the decline. >> yes. >> when we reviewed the videos, we found assaults were increasing. were you aware of that? >> i think you saw and the information provided to you was

the clips. there is more reports going on, that leads us to believe our operators are more aware of these types of behaviors and they're aware of that. >> he said one of the reasons they don't match up is ac transit doesn't count how many reports are given by the bus operator. law enforcement decide which incidents count as an assault. if an operator said they feel they have been assaulted, you're saying that may not count as an assault? >> that's where law enforcement is going to be the one that determines whether an assault occurred. >> what we're going to do is respond to the operator and say, hey, operator, you're reporting there's been an assault. we're going to provide some resources. >> this is not a joke.

things are changing next week. >> more snow possibly into monday and a chance to finally looking at substantial rain making a return to the bay area. outside right now, you might notice clouds starting to pick up. clouds off to the east around mount hamilton. a bit of a breezy evening too. winds 15 to 30 miles per hour. emeryville looks pretty off to the west. wind speeds 18 miles per hour. into san francisco, bundle up for the chinese new year parade down to 52 degrees. 23-mile-per-hour winds. 40s at parade times under partly cloudy skies. probably not a big chance for rain if it is moving from north to south. it doesn't have a lot of access to moisture. does show some areas getting measurable rainfall by liver moore and coastal hilltop. it will be likely by tomorrow morning. a chilly start, low 30s, patchy

fog around the north bay and east bay valleys. in the afternoon, highs similar to what we had today. upper 50s, maybe near 60 in san jose. livermo livermore, 58. close to 56 in oakland with mostly cloudy skies tomorrow afternoon. peninsula, san francisco temperatures mid to upper 50s for sunday. north bay the coolest we will see around the bay area as rain begins to march southward late tomorrow evening, monday morning. increasing clouds through the day on sunday. 6:30 monday morning, rain starts to move through the south bay pretty quickly. skies clear around lunchtime. towards the evening commute the showers will shut down. the monday weather system will probably probably a quarter inch of rain for parts of the pay area. so more than we have seen the past week. and thursday is the best chance for more substantial rain.

monday, winter-type driving. we could see more than a foot of snow in the high country for the monday morning. right now we are focusing on the thursday storm. some of the coastal hills through the day thursday could be looking at one to two inches of rain. this has good access over the ocean. it will scoop more moisture, shower through friday, and a cool and breezy setup as we head into the first weekend of march. so the seven-day forecast, tomorrow's forecast looks similar to today. cool and breezy. some lowell vacation snow possible, down to 2,500 feet with the monday system. that's something to watch. and the storm that comes in thursday could be adding rainfall, an inch, which is something we need and haven't seen in a while. >> coming right in the beginning of march. >> right on schedule. still ahead, getting to paradise a little less convenient. an airline canceled flights to a popular destination. we )ve learr

was rushed to the hospital after battling a house fire in the los altos hills. the santa clara county fire department says the firefighter fell off th a firefighter was rushed to the hospital after battling a fire. he fell off the roof but is expected to recover. it started just before 1:00 on lorain a lane. two people were inside the home at the time. they were able to escape without any injuries. petaluma police want help finding two lotto thieves.

police say he walked into discount cigarettes last night on old redwood highway and grabbed two racks of scratcher tickets, jumped into a car, and they took off. two suspects have already cashed in about $500 worth of prizes. disappointment for travelers planning to visit hawaii this spring. they have removed two seasonal summer flights between the area and the hawaiian islands. it will not operate a nonstop flight between oakland and kona because of unforeseen delays in the new airbus fleet delivery. two major airlines are cutting ties with the national rifle association. nighted and delta announced they won't offer discounts to tphaur they're members. they are distancing themselves in the wake of the florida school shooting. still to come can, honoring a summer olympic star during these winter games. a new center named after natalie

medalist now has a center named after her in concord. >> reporter: some possibly dreaming to become an olympian getting advice from one of the best swimmers in the world. 12-time medalist, natalie coglin, is giving that advice and doing it at a facility that bears her name. >> seeing natalie at the aquatic center is a little overwhelming. it is a massive honor. >> reporter: an honor her high school bestowed on her. she is a graduate of the all-girls school in concord. the students haven't had a pool of their own for a while. >> the facility has been 50 years in the making. the girls have not had their home field since the start of the school. >> i have grown up watching her and idolizing her and having an olympian like named after our pool is just amazing.
