see in that top camera just a little bit there. a live look at the roads right now. this is richmond as we continue to go -- there you go, you can see the sprinkles right there. this is in richmond. if you are in that area get ready to face some of those drops in the morning. good morning, thank you so much for starting your day with us, i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia. it was interesting to take a look at that radar, it looks like it's coming our way. >> yes, it is, it's starting in the north bay, it's making its way to the south and we will have some rounds of rain for the next several days. so it's really good to see some changes here in our pattern as we are starting to see at least some measurable rain in the north bay, getting a closer look at even a wintry mix farther to the north just to the east of ukiah. you head down 101 into santa rosa, petaluma you're seeing the rain coming down. as we go through the day we will see that rain getting heavier for parts of the east bay, getting light rain now, and then the rest of the day this rain rolls through with a couple pop

up showers and thunderstorms for the afternoon. i will detail that coming up. mike, you were saying the lanes @u9 two separate incidents over here, that occurred÷ coming dow toward fremont. looking at most of the roadways they also look well, getting wetter as kari showed that rain coming in. westbound 21ú i did hear abou tunnel. reports are it's in this area where the arrow is, but chp has to confirm any lanes blocked. no slowing as you see on the sensors heading toward highway 13 or that bay bridge toll plaza. you see slowing here and also that rain the highlighted green stuff over here in the north bay, it's coming around so be careful. the bay bridge the live shot does show the backup for the cash lanes, looks like all the cash lanes have opened up so we're starting to see that compressing toward the toll plaza. again, fast track, good deal. back to you. back to breaking news on the peninsula. overnight chase is finally over, but it started in sunnyvale and

led to a neighborhood near stanford. it was in lockdown. >> "today in the bay" is live there right now, bob redell is off of el camino real and stanford avenue with what he just learned. bob? >> reporter: marcus and lawyer ration there were two suspects who led police on a chase here to this intersection in palo alto, el camino real and stanford avenue. as you can see in this video there was a heavy law enforcement response. not only from police here in palo alto, but also mountain view and sunnyvale. an officer on the scene told me that they did arrest two suspects, one appears to be a woman and we don't have any information about the second person, but the officer did say that they are not looking for anyone else. in other words, they believe they got everyone. this started just before midnight in the city of sunnyvale. officers there responded to a call of shots fired. when they arrived on the scene they say the suspects fled in what appears to be a 1990s honda civic. they did get away for a short time on foot. ñ were

involved in the search before no injuries during this episode. sunnyvaleh2÷ department of publ safety, that's their police department, tweeted out thisd" morning they are still trying to confirm whether there were ever any shots fired. jcvy redell, "today in the bay." at 5:03 right now developing this morning, two people are dead and one injured after aámh triple shooting on the peninsula. now, that search for whoever is behind this continued for hours overnight. that shooting happened around 9:00 last night outside of a market off of hillside boulevard. this is near daly city. the broadmoor police chief says one victim died at the scene, the second died at the hospital. officers say that shooter may have known at least one of the victims. police came up empty after an all out search of that area last night. they do not believe that gunman is still in the area. now to a developing story this morning. fear of impending i.c.e. raids throughout the bay area this morning, it comes after a series of arrests over the weekend. in santa clara, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thanks for the latest. as we look into washington, d.c. right now, congress is back in session this morning and a top topic for us will likely be those guns. president trump is set to discuss that issue today with many of the nation's governors. >> california governor jerry brown is not on the official list of attendees for the annual governors meeting. also today teachers will return to marjory stoneman douglas high school in park lapd, florida. it will be their first time back since this month's deadly shooting which sparked the nationwide discussion on gun rights. listen as one teacher lays out his plan. >> i'm going to try to be myself. i'm going to be there, i'm going to hug all of my students, we're going to talk about whatever they want to talk about. >> students in parkland are scheduled to return later this week, but the building where the shooting unfolded will stay closed. there are tentative plans to tear it down. happening today activism about gun control comes to the bay area.

students at palo alto's gun high school say they plan to demonstrate this morning saying never again to mass shootings. there will be another rally in florida in the state's capitol. new video to show you this morning of an artist staging a protest to try to save the sculpture behind her. the protest took place yesterday afternoon in downtown palo alto. the city plans to tear down that artwork which was installed 13 years ago, it is called digital dna, it's made of digital keyboards. the city has said the work gets damaged often and repairs are costly. right now at 5:07 tracking some rain this morning on your morning commute and also throughout the day. although there will be some breaks, we're seeing this moving from north to south, also some snow coming down in the sierra. really beneficial rain. and this first round looks like it will bring a quarter of an inch of rain for much of the bay area for the south bay up to 0.3

of an inch of rain, lighter amounts for the north bay up to almost a quarter of an inch of rain there. as we go through the week we can see a lot more rain, talking about 2 to 3 inches of rain as we head through the week. what does that mean for the sierra? this first round brings in up to a foot of snow? spots like kingvale but look at what can happen as the week goes along, the potential of getting 80 inches of snow in kingvale. we so desperately need this. we will talk about our rainfall deficit coming up in just a few minutes. mike, you're investigating the maze. >> yeah, but 80 inches. i had to check the map. we will watch that. over here the 80s are moving well, this maze of roadways for the most part are moving well. i was talking specifically about the maze, macarthur maze, folks familiar with that term know i'm talking about the approach to the bay bridge. with he see slowing there, rain coming down, the effects on our map show you the highlighted green areas will you will get slicker roadways.

the crash on highway 24 coming into the area. we're looking at your travel times. okay getting over toward the bay bridge, slower around the berkeley curve. our camera from emeryville, there are a couple cash lanes that don't have their toll takers there yet, that is affecting folks on the approach on the right lanes, things are starting to slow back here, gumming off of the east shore freeway heading over toward the bay bridge. that's still sticking around there. the left approach is moving well off of 580 and coming off of 880, the overcrossing funnels into that backup as well. we do have an unusual backup for folks heading toward the left side of that fast track lanes. we will keep that in mind and keep track of it. coming up next on "today in the bay," protecting your credit, the warning this morning after an alarming new report reveals how many americans haven't checked their credit since the massive equifax breach. plus a u.s. senator proposes punishing facebook for those fake posts. we will take a look when "today in the bay" continues. kari weate

cloudy skies going throughout the morning. some rain moving through but there will be a break and a chance of some thunderstorms popping up. we talked about the chance of getting two to three inches of rain this week. how will that help out with the deficit and how much we will get for the water here. the backup is still there at the bay bridge toll plaza. you see those cash lanes, we are talking about a different traffic flow just as those metering lights are getting ready to turn on. and a very happy monday to you, marcus will get back to work this morning along with the rest of us. big gains on friday's dow up 347 points back above 25,000. nasdaq up 127. twitter and facebook back in the news, both are trying to fight fake postings, particularly claims of those kids in florida are actors, they are not. on "meet the press" over the weekend a democratic senator called for twitter and facebook

to be fined if they keep failing to block those bots. >> these are the most sophisticated companies in america, they have brilliant people working there. i believe that they've got to put more resources maybe it means they make less profits off of ads and other things, but they've got to put the resources into facebook and twitter to stop these bots from dominating the accounts. >> today the california dmv will consider adopting new rules that will allow driverless cars on the road, as in nobody in the car driverless. researchers will be required to have a link to the car, something that allows them to pull it over in an emergency. that decision expected today and if the board says yes you could see an empty car next to you on 280 as soon as april. the san francisco travel association said recently the growth in the number of tourists visiting the city is slowing and it blames two things, number one, foreign visitors worried about donald trump. the group says negative perceptions about the united states are affecting tourism.

francisco some light showers coming down. this is not going to be a really heavy rain today. also not going to be like, wow, what is going on? it's going to be like light sprinkles going on. that's what we are seeing in richmond and also in berkeley. over toward orinda. then we are seeing the rain also in vallejo, novato and extending farther to the north. it's a fairly cool start with temperatures in the upper 40s and low 50s. let's talk about how much rain we're lacking here and how much this is such a much needed rain for the week. now, we are missing about 13 inches of rain in santa rosa to catch up for normal for the water year. only about 50% of normal. we are also getting half of the normal amount of rain for much of the bay area from san francisco, oakland, to livermore, mountain view and san jose. we still need almost six inches of rain to catch up to normal in san jose. we will get a little bit of rain today, some of the showers that we are seeing now continue to work its way into the east bay

and the peninsula, by 6:30 in the next hour or so moving into the south bay. by 7:00 to 8:00 this morning, and then it will start to take a break after it tapers off in the south bay. as we go into this afternoon we're going to see another round of showers popping up and this one could be enough to produce some brief heavy downpours and some small hail as it continues to once again move from north to south and then tapering off later tonight with some snow on mt. hamilton for the south bay. as we go through the week another round of more widespread and heavy rain moves in wednesday into thursday. it continues into friday and saturday as well. so this is not the weekend to get out there, only sunday will be your clear day as we will start to see those storm systems winding down. it's going to be cool all week long, highs only in the mid to upper 50s for san francisco, morning temperatures in the low 40s and then some 30s for the inland areas. so we will talk more about our storm chances for today and then, mike, you are going out on the road with ethan. that's right.

first we will check in with everybody is on the road right now is seems at the bay bridge toll plaza. we had the early backup for the cash lanes and then the fast track lanes are starting to fill in. they should turn those metering lights right on schedule, maps they may be turning them on a couple minutes early right now. there's your big backup for the bay. i want to get out with our photographer ethan driving around city streets. this is richmond. you can see the wet roadway, you can see in the head light beams there you can see some rain falling as kari is talking about hitting our lens and he's waiting for that reed light. ethan is not holding the cam ration it's mounted there. ee hand is in the area of richmond right here and you see the road weather index shows where the rain came through some of the green highlighting and the red over -- sorry, the red, that's blue -- blue over in rio vista, that is where some puddling and ponding may be, it's coming down, sweeping through the area. we do have a crash west 24 as you're coming down toward wilder. it's a spinout i'm told it occurred on the off ramp.

it could be because folks were at freeway speeds, it could be because of slicker roadways or it could be bath of those combined. so keep that in mind as the rain comes in in waves throughout the day. no major problems other than that south of 24. looking at slowing out of the altamonte pass and a disabled vehicle reported somewhere around the airport. i will check with chp and let you know what they tell us as well. sometimes that rain and the wind could affect the bart and ferry systems. no wind problems right now so the ferries are on time and bart no problem for the rain just yet, but if that rain comes in stronger they may have to slow those trains for safety sake. got to brake a little easier even for the bart trains. back to you guys. thanks so much. it's 5:21. coming up next on "today in the bay," another side effect of the bay area's growing population, the worker shortage that could be contributing to the housing crunch. we will talk about why so many people are buying cars in the north bay. the reports connecting this to what you see right there, the north bay wildfires.

shortage of homes: welcome back. it's 5:24. turns out the housing shortage is more than just a shortage of homes, it also is a shortage of workers. according to a mercury news report contracting companies are having trouble finding the skilled labor to conduct new homes. in some cases this he have to three in workers from seattle.

construction jobs have only gone up one-tenth the rate of permits issued due in large part to higher costs. perhaps an unusual ripple effect from the devastating north bay fire. reports of new car sales. a new car registration in sonoma county last year jumped nearly 10% the month after the wildfires saw by far the highest spike. as many fire victims were forced to buy new cars to replace the ones destroyed. people in san francisco apparently want to spend more time in the library. new recommendations from the city suggests adding hours on friday and sunday. the sf examiner is reporting on the proposed changes. the paper says the library's budget is set to grow by about $25 million in the next fiscal year. this past summer the library added hours to make sure every branch was open seven days a week. big news for people looking to lose wait weight, texas

good morning, ihm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. let's head over to meteorologist kari hall. >> slick roads this morning. we will have several more mornings like this as we start to see a change in our weather pattern and some rain finally making it into the bay area. this is moving from north to south so we've already had it in the north bay, santa rosa now taking a break, it's continuing to move through much of marin county and napa county and also moving into san francisco. now, where we see the yellows a little bit of heavier rain around the richmond district and that's also going across the san mateo bridge and also down across that richmond bridge. we are seeing some pockets of some heavier rain and it's now moving into walnut creek. we will see this continuing to move into oakland and farther to the south as we go throughout the morning and also some breaks today. now, there will once again be more rain this week i will talk about that in a few minutes. mike, you're saying it's misty for the bay bridge as well.

>> i was misty for the bay bridge. there may be slicker roadways. you can see the sheen on the pavement and in the light here as well. there's the east shore freeway look at that you see some drops now. there you go. things changing as we have our live cameras. it's already hit the north bay, we've been tracking that pushing down through this area, richmond, where ethan's camera was. definitely rain on city streets and pushing through the area. kari is talking about walnut creek. right in the area where she showed the active radar around the interchange we have southbound 680 at main street. another crash, a car sounds like it lost control at the off ramp and left debris on the roadway as well. no major injuries reported there. more around the bay but with that rain coming through we will continue to see it affect the continues when folks are driving so be careful as you get on to the roadway this morning. back to you. now to a developing story on the peninsula, a deadly triple shooting in unincorporated san

mateo county. we do know that two people are dead and another is recovering this morning and that search continues for the gunman. >> "today in the bay's" pete suratos live at the broadmoor police department with what led up to the shots being fired. good morning, pete. >> reporter: good morning, laura and marcus. broadmoor police are still trying to determine exactly what the motive was behind this shooting, but as you guys mentioned the suspected shooter they are still looking for the shooter at this time. let's show you guys the scene from overnight, that scene just clearing not too long ago on the 500 block of villa street here in broadmoor. according to broadmoor police who is the lead on this shooting they're saying it took place roughly around 9:00 p.m. that shooter shooting at three people in the area. you had one victim dying at the scene, another one dying at a nearby hospital and that third victim still recovering from injuries that are considered non-life-threatening at sf general. as far as the description goes for the suspected shooter at this time we're only being told that it is a male shooter they are looking for at this time,

most gold medals doesn't mean you can't say we won. no one wins the olympics. >> this is true. >> green, that's the focus as well. green for the rain, wet roadways all over the north bay coming through the east bay. looking at the blue that you find on the maps, like in rio vista, that's where there's puddling and ponding likely. we will focus on one crash here that is showing up some slowing still going on westbound highway 24 your commute direction heading toward the caldecott but shy of the caldecott. we have the crash affecting the wilder off ramp, a spinout there. the green highlighting has crept toward the orinda area so that's where rain has continued to move down. we see most of the bay is looking really good, a backup at the bay bridge toll plaza because the metering lights are on, but let's check with our friend photographer ethan who is driving around, he will be tracking the east bay freeway, i think he is going to get on to i-80 as he's travel through richmond now. that's the rain that's affecting folks through the area. wet roadways but at least he has a green light.

go, ethan. >> clearly he didn't see our gas prices story. >> i think he's using a company car. >> gas prices on the rise this monday morning. >> a lot of people looking at that forecast seeing the rain this week so they are probably thinking ahead, okay, what about the weekend. the weekend is starting to look wet, too. we will have rain moving in today. as we get a look at the radar, we've seen the showers moving through the north bay into san francisco now, also in parts of the east bay. we've only seen a couple spotty showers for the south bay so far and we will start to see that working its way into the south bay later on this morning. let's get right to saturday because this one looks pretty soggy. some heavy rain continuing and it's going to be chilly as well, highs only reaching into the mid 50s. by sunday we will start to see the rain backing off and some mid 50s throughout the weekend on sunday, but that will be our only dry day of the weekend and it's going to be cool and breezy.

don't know bag caught fire between a china southern airline flight. the crew put out the fire with bottles of water and juice. the airline says a charging device which was not in use actually caught fire. a similar issue happened in america. a new video showing a vape pen catching fire at a denver airport. this happened in january but we are now just seeing the footage. the pen was inside a bag that had already cleared screening lines. investigators say the vape pen's lithium ion battery made contact with other items in the bag. a quick explanation for you. lithium ion batteries power phones, lap ps to, e-cigarettes even smart bug damage. the faa tells passengers not to pack the batteries in checked bags. the worry is that the batteries could explode. that's why we're supposed to carry them on so if they do explode someone could put out the flames.

mostly into marin county, also southern napa county, over towards solano and also into san francisco right now. as we get a closer look we can see some pockets of some heavy rain getting ready to approach vallejo in the next few minutes and also for mill valley where we see the yellows and the reds that's where that rain is really starting to come down. in daly city and bay shore, bay view district, that's where it's really heavy rain at this point. considering what we're seeing elsewhere across the bay area with some lighter showers from berkeley toward orinda and richmond as well, concord getting in on rain and it's also starting to move into pittsburg. we are seeing rain in oakland and also in piedmont. this morning it does start out wet. you do need to make sure you have the rain gear from the rain jacket to the umbrella, also rain boots or shoes that may get a little wet and you don't mind because it's going to be soggy at times. once again it won't be raining

all day. also those jeans that help keep you warm. let's go throughout the day because we will start to see this rain moving into the east bay as well as the peninsula and the south bay. by 7:00 this morning, so we've got another hour or so before it moves into the south bay. as it continues to move off towards the south it becomes a lot more scattered as we go into late morning and early afternoon. there will be some breaks at times of sunshine breaking out but don't let your guard down. there will be another round of rain moving in in time for the evening commute for parts of the north bay and east bay. this is when we could also have brief heavy downpours and small hail as we go into today. the next round of rain moves in between wednesday and thursday, looks like that rain continues through friday as well as saturday and some heavy rain for the bay area and some sierra snow. so for the bay area we are looking at about a quarter of an inch of rain, could be a little heavier in some spots, the next couple of rounds of rain could bring the potential of getting about one to three inches of rain across the bay area so we

desperately do so need that. we will talk about that a little bit more. mike, you were saying there was a crash towards the south bay. >> we got this reported for the santa cruz mount ins at that. the big map things are moving pretty well but we will point out stuff on the top and bottom of the map. first highway 17 toward the campbell area, it's very slow as you head toward the summit. one of your only two lanes is blocked by a crash. i'm told it's a solo car spinout, to major injuries at first reports but we are looking at slowing coming over from the santa cruz side. if you are farther north you are okay getting up toward the bay bridge butut we have a few issu around that area. highway 24 still with that crash around wilder and wet roadways around this map. our photographer ethan is out on the east shore freeway, he's driving, let me get out of the way, look at the wet roads but it's moving well. he's going down the east shore freeway through berkeley and down toward the berkeley curve. that's looking really good right now westbound on 80. north bay san rafael wet roadways as well.

will have broken into about 80 more cars in san francisco. the rising number of car break-ins in the city is being called epidemic. investigative reporter bigad shaban has been digging into what's driving up those numbers. i spoke with him about that investigation. here is look at the conversation. when you talk about car break-ins people roll their eyes, it's either happened to them or someone they know. you all dug deep, what did you find out? >> certainly a lot of frustration. this is something that's become a bit of a norm in the san francisco, whether you live in the city or are visiting. we looked at the some 30,000 car break-ins that were filed last year, we actually discovered that police were only able to make arrests in about 1.7% of cases. the other thing we learned that largely these are crimes being committed not by someone acting alone but organized crime rings. the statistics point to 70 or 80% of these crimes are being committed by teams of people. >> when you all investigate you truly investigate. you all put hidden cameras throughout one of the cars. >> we did.
