to rain in pittsburg, it's raining in hayward. we are going to have more rain rolling from north to south and covering much of the bay area as the morning goes along. right now as we get a look at the radar where you see the greens, light rain, yellows and the reds show where the most intense rain a pouring right now. st just south of novato and also vallejo right now. some really wet roads and also in parts of san francisco. bay view district, some heavy rain also around daly city, east bay seeing light rain at this point as it continues to move off towards the south and east, but we will see the radar filling in as we go through the day. still dry in san jose but we will get to when the rain arrives there coming up in a few minutes. ethan is out there live right here, our photographer ethan driving in the elements. this is rain on the windshield. a smooth drive right now southbound 880 heading down through oakland. let me show you what's going on around ethan. he knows about the rain, he has

shown that to us. we are also doing facebook live, we're talking weather, we will talk traffic as well. this is where the green highlight shows slicker conditions through the east bay, north bay, in between san francisco. ethan is going toward oakland but heading toward hayward. there is a crash reported around whipple road and also a disabled vehicle around vil. a lot of slowing past that san mateo bridge. we are looking at five vehicles possibly in the lanes around whipple. chp will bring us the update and ethan is heading down toward the area. anywhere south of there things look nice. rain is coming, be careful. back to you. it is 6:02. all new this morning two people are behind bars after a chase that led officers from sunnyvale to a neighborhood near stanford. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live off of el camino real and stanford avenue with a look at what happened overnight. good morning, bob.

>> reporter: laura, there are two suspects who led police on this chase that ended up in the intersection here behind me in palo alto. we are along the el camino real and the intersection with stanford avenue. it's quite a heavy law enforcement response that included not only police have here in palo alto but also sunnyvale and mountain view. an officer on the scene told me they have arrested two people, that they are not looking for anyone else. we believe that one of those suspects is a woman, i don't have the information about the second person. this started just before midnight in the city of sun sunnyva sunnyvale. officers there were responding to a call of shots fired. when they arrived on the scene they say the suspects fled in what appears to be a 1990s honda civic. they ended up here in palo alto, got away for a short time on foot before police found the pair. it appears that k-9s might have helped in that search. no injuries during this episode. sunnyva sunnyvale's department of public safety tweeted out this morning they are still trying to confirm whether there were ever any

shots fired in that initial call. reporting live in palo alto, bob redell, "today in the bay." it is 6:03 right now. developing right now two people dead, one injured after a triple shooting on the peninsula. the search for whoever is behind the shooting continues for hours overnight. the shooting happened at about 9:00 last night outside a market off of hillsdale boulevard near daly city. the police chief says one victim died at the scene, a second victim died at the hospital. officers say the shooter may have known at least one of the victims. police came up empty after a search of the area last night. they do not believe the gunman was in that area. also developing this morning there are a lot of fears about impending i.c.e. raids throughout the bay area. it comes after warnings from oakland mayor libby schaaf then a series of arrests over the weekend. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live in santa clara and, kris, what have we be able to learn about these potential immigration raids? >> reporter: we can tell you in about two hours there's going to be a prayer and vigil in honor of one man who has a detention

hearing today but there's going to be a lot of similar prayers around the bay area as we are getting reports of as many as 11 people were arrested all around the bay area and beyond in some immigration raids. we did ask immigration customs enforcement for specific numbers on detentions over the weekend. they have not responded to that request. but an immigrant's rights group did track 11 arrests. they happened in napa, el sobrante, monterey, sacramento and merced county. the wife of a man arrested in napa caught it on video. i.c.e. agents walking into their back yard and taking her husband away. we found video on social media shot by a food truck operator in napa with the caption please be careful, they're in our town. it is something the san jose and oakland mayors warned people about. >> i did seek legal counsel about what my obligations are in this situation and while i am very committed to being a law

vista is our wind turbines, right now not picking up on heavy rain. san rafael mill valley showing yellows and reds and it's just starting to that you were off in san francisco. moving toward alameda and oakland within the next few minutes. we will have more rain moving in and expect it to reach san jose by 7:00 to 7:30 with some heavy downpours also extending towards the tri-valley and los gatos and it starts to taper off for the east bay and north bay. we will still have some rounds of rain in the forecast today after a brief break late morning early afternoon. another round of rain will be here in time for the afternoon to evening and this round could contain some thunderstorms as well as some small hail. i will talk more about that and we will break down the timeline for today. mike, you're tracking rain and a crash in hayward. watching your radar and your reports, kari and also looking at our map with the road weather index that green creeping down on either side of the bay. we have a lot of slowing that's

on "meet the press" over the weekend a democratic senator called for twitter and facebook to be fined if they keep failing to block those bots. >> these are the most sophisticated companies in america, they have brilliant people working there. i believe that they've got to put more resources maybe it means they make less profits off of ads and other things, but they've got to put the resources into facebook and twitter to stop these bots from dominating the accounts. >> today the california dmv will consider adopting new rules that will allow driverless cars on the road as in nobody in the car driverless. researchers will be required to have a link to the car, something that allows them to pull the car over in an emergency. that decision expected today and if the board says you could see an empty car next to you on 280 as soon as april. the san francisco travel association says the growth in the number of tourists visiting the city is slowing and it blames two things, number one, foreign visitors worried about

donald trump. the group claims, quote, negative perceptions about the united states are affecting decisions to travel. in addition to mr. trump the travel association says our dirty streets are a big problem. our own bigad shaban took a look at that in his investigative piece. the unclenlyless of the city often takes tourists by surprise. realistically you have to point to the renovation and rebuilding of mosconi center. i just tweeted out a link to the report. i know you've seen t a lot of people have seen it. >> a lot of people have talked about it. >> just shocking. we've all walked the streets of san francisco hundreds of times. we knew, but it's even worse, i think, than we thought. >> oh, yeah, completely. it's a beautiful city. beautiful city. we have some happy new this morning for those students at marjory stoneman douglas high school. this is where that florida shooting took place. the school's hockey team is returning as state champions.

the victory comes less than two weeks after that gunman killed 17 other fellow students. the varsity hockey team started out as the bottom seed in that tournament but came back to upset the top seed in the semi-finals. they won the title match yesterday afternoon. the players say after that shooting that they weren't sure who would actually show up to play, but they're glad they chose to come, to be on that ice and they are honored to pay reflects to their fallen classmates. no one was lacking energy in the locker room. this wasn't for us, this is for the 17 victims, they played for them. so passionate, so emotional, it's all for them. >> stoneman douglas is qualified to compete in the high school hockey national tournament which is in late march. >> good for them. let's take a live look outside, you know where this is? it's our caltrans camera along donner summit this morning. they've got to clear the roads. the rain hitting the bay area bringing a lot of fresh snow to

the sierra. caltrans will be busy out there. new video into our newsroom this morning showing the snow coming down. this is in gold run up in plaster county. look at the size of those flakes. >> i love that. >> i love it when you're inside warm and cozy. >> huge snowflakes. they are going to see a lot more. we are going to talk about how much snow they are going to see in the sierra, but of course sierra snow, bay area rain. we are going to get quite a bit, too. we're starting out this morning with some wet roads in parts of the bay area. hasn't yet made it to the south bay, but it's very close. we've seen the rain in the north bay for quite a while now, where you see the greens, light rain, yellows and reds show heavier rain and it's now moving across parts of the richmond-san rafael bridge and the golden gate bridge, too. so if you are driving out of the north bay into parts of the east bay or the south bay, it is going to be very sloppy out there.

so allow extra time to get to work now. heavy rain in richmond and we are also seeing a steady rain right now in san francisco. a little bit lighter there, but getting heavier for berkeley and also for oakland. seeing some pockets of some heavier rain moving through orinda and also in parts of the delta. we are still going to see the light rain making its way farther to the south, but really starting to po you are in san mateo and it's all clear right now in san jose. the rain will make it to san jose within the next 30 to 40 minutes and then continuing to make its way off towards the south and east. we will see it for a little while, give it a couple hours before it clears out, but there will be some clearing today, breaks in the rain, and thunderstorms popping up for this afternoon that could produce small hail. we will be watching out for that, but it will be a quick one and done before it clears out tonight with colder temperatures. our next round of rain moves in on wednesday into thursday and the rain just continues between thursday and friday and saturday before it finally gets out of

here during that time we are looking at the potential of getting anywhere from one to possibly three inches of rain this week and then for the sierra we are looking at anywhere from two to three to possibly four feet of snow. i mean, look at that, kingvale could have 80 inches of snow in week and we know we so desperately need it with the sierra only running about 20% of normal for snowfall. and then for the seven-day forecast it's just going to stay chilly with a break in the rain tomorrow and most of the day on wednesday. now, mike, you are still tracking that crash in hayward. i am, but i'm floored by that 80 inches of snow you are talking about. that's more inches than i am. over toward hayward, looking at the rain coming down in the east bay, north bay, peninsula all seeing that green highlighting, wet roadways and slick conditions, that is our rain story for the overall bay. this is the big slowdown through hayward out of san leandro, san

aeromexico which is a delta partner. his ticket confirmation says so right here in the fine print. but here is the thing, when juan arrived at the airport and punched in his confirmation code into the aeromexico commuter it spit out an itinerary for a different time with someone else's name on it. aero mexico couldn't sort it out so juan had to buy a new ticket right there on the spot arriving in oakland seven hours and $685 later. juan then asked for our help figuring out what happened here. well, delta traced the breakdown to juan's confirmation code. it said aeromexico may have assigned the same confirmation number as the delta confirmation number to another passenger. delta agreed to refund juan the $260 he spent on the original ticket. juan took it. he said he appreciated our help. when one airline handles flight

we have had him out there all morning tracking the rain. you're seeing traffic pick up a little bit as well. good morning, thanks for joining us, i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. you're wondering what's going on weatherwise. the storm coming through our area, meteorologist kari hall has been tracking all of this for us this morning. what can we expect today? >> it's one of those morning where we're getting back in the routine, maybe you and the kids were off last week for winter break. we are waking up to wet conditions, seeing the rain moving into parts of the east bay, the yellows and reds is where it is really coming down. we're seeing that on the richmond-san rafael bridge and it's rihning heavily in richmond. this will start to move into san jose within the next hour and then it still continues into 8:00 and 9:00. when many more people are getting up and out and about we will have pretty widespread rain for the east bay and south bay and some pockets of heavy downpours will continue until 10:00 and then a break but there will be more rain moving in this afternoon and this is when the

south of there things are dry but rains coming down. north of there we do have the slower drive toward the bay bridge. here is that ri toll plaza. as kari showed you on the radar that rain was hammering over the last few minutes, just starting to ease up a little bit. look how wet it is and that rain still falling, guys. be careful. 6:33. developing this morning police are searching for the gunman involved in a deadly triple shooting on the peninsula. it happened in broadmoor and san mateo county near daly city. two people were killed, a third was injured. "today in the bay's" pete suratos is live in broadmoor with the police department this morning to explain what led up to this violent crime. pete? that's the big question, police are trying to determine exactly what the motive was behind this deadly shooting that took place not too far from where we're standing at the broadmoor police department. the suspected shooter a male shooter may have known the

victims but you guys are looking at the scene from overnight, it happening on the 500 block of villa street not too far from the hillside market in that area. police are saying it happened just before 9:00 p.m. that shooter shooting at three people, one person dying on the scene, another person dying at a nearby hospital, the third person getting treatment for non-life-threatening injuries at san francisco general. at this time they're saying the cause of that shooting is under investigation. of course, if you have any information to help out with this case contact police. we're live in broadmoor, pete suratos for "today in the bay." 6:34 right now. firefighters plan to offer tri-valley residents free disaster preparedness training. livermore pleasanton fire department will hold seven community emergency response team training classes. the classes will train residents with how to respond to dis officers and domestic terror incidents. starting april 30th each three hour session will run monday nights, the memorial day class will be held on the following

saturday. this morning the olympic torch no longer burning in south korea. athletes on their way home after two weeks of competition. here is a piece of that closing ceremony just in case you missed i it. >> and with that, it is done. now we're looking ahead to two and a half years from now at the 2020 summer olympic games. this is in tokyo. this morning we expect 100 athletes to come through san francisco international airport. >> it's pretty cool. that includes jamie anderson who won a silver medal. this is video from just a few weeks ago during the big sendoff at sfo. expect a similar scene this morning. got to welcome them home. here is a final medal count, norway the powerhouse of the 2018 winter olympic games. 39 medals, 14 gold, germany places second. team u.s.a. was in fourth place with nine gold medals, the netherlands in fifth and south korea is in sixth place.

registering in rio vista. we are looking at a smooth drive toward the bay bridge despite an early backup over there and the walnut creek interchange moves well. south of the dumbarton bridge everything is a little drier but things are moving down. she will give you the schedule for when you will see that rain. right now you will see the slowing as we showed you a couple times from our truck out there, ethan our photographer stuck in the backup as he's heading past the san mateo bridge heading towards south 880 at tennison. there is a crash blocking your right lane there. some folks backed up right around that san mateo bridge. let's take a live look and show you the conditions. very slow now just kicking in across the flat section and you notice that it's bury because the water has hit the lens. we are not using a windshield wiper here, make sure yours are okay. >> that's true. >> for people heading out the door this morning i know you want to know what's going to happen this morning and also we are looking ahead to the weekend. let's cover all of that right now. here is a look at the radar now,

a lot of yellows and reds showing some really intense rain moving through the peninsula and then some pockets of some heavy rain for parts of the east bay. it's about to pick up in the next few minutes for san francisco, also for richmond and berkeley and approaching oakland within the next few minutes. also for san mateo and also east palo alto about to get in on some heavy rain. this will start to work its way into san jose within the next 30 to 40 minutes. as we look ahead to the weekend it's still going to be raining. it won't rain all week but we will have heavy downpours coming through throughout the day on saturday and the highs will only reach the mid 50s. then on sunday that's our break from the rain, partly to mostly cloudy skies and still very chilly with highs in the mid 50s on sunday. if you are going to russian river valley expect the rain and look at that, the high only 47 degrees, 49 degrees on saturday as that rain papers off and some sunshine on sunday. we will break down today's temperature trend for palo alto, that's coming up in about three minutes. thank you, kari.

video out just within the last 24 hours. this happened in china this weekend sparking new concerns about lithium batteries. of course they power so many of our gadgets. minutes before taking off a carry on bag caught tire authored a china southern airlines plane. the crew put the flames out with what appears to be bottles of water and juice. it takes a couple tries but the flames are finally doused. the airline says a charging device not in use caught fire. aevpq similar issue in amer showing video of a vape pen catching fire at the denver airport. it happened in january. the pen was set to be inside of a bag that had already cleared screening lines. investigators say the vape pen's lithium ion battery made contact with other items in the bag. of course, lithium ion batteries power laptops, phones, e-cigarettes and smart luggage. they tell passengers not to pack

the batteries in checked bags. the worry that the batteries could explode and fire spread rapidly inside a closed cargo compartment. that's why we are supposed to carry them on so if they do explode someone can put out the flames. a political snub for senator dianne feinstein. the california democratic party is not endorsing her or any candidate in the u.s. senate contest. feinstein has represented california in the senate for a quarter century. she's facing a challenge by democratic state senator kevin day leon. he has not gotten the endorsement as well but has secured enough votes to ensure feinstein wouldn't get it, either. feinstein still has a commanding lead in public polling and fundraising. the white house may finally be ready to let president trump talk about robert mueller. >> there would be conditions. >> there would. according to new reporting from the "wall street journal" this morning the journal says the

president's lawyers are willing to let president trump talk to the special counsel if the questions are limited and don't include questions that might lead the president to entrap himself. critics of that plan point out hillary clinton spent 11 hours answering questions about benghazi in public under oath and did not get the questions ahead of time. they were not limited to one subject, either. we've in the past talked about how mr. trump has struggled to tell the truth during testimony like this one. here he is giving a sworn deposition in a suit he brought against an author in which he said things that were easily disprovable. over the weekend democrats on the house intelligence committee released their own memo, their response to a republican accusation the fbi was trying to trick the fisa court. if you haven't been following every twist and turn of this memo, i really don't blame you, but here is the basics a bit oversimplified. the fbi tapped this man's phone,

6:55. welcome back. before you head out the door here are the top stories we're covering on "today in the bay." we do have breaking news for you this morning. a defeat for president trump and his bid for a quick ruling on ending special protections for dreamers. nbc news reporting that the supreme court has just turned down a request from the white house for a quick ruling on that power. a decision to not hear the case immediately may keep in place the correct -- the current, rather, protections for dreamers past the march 5th deadline imposed by the president. in that ruling justices said that the case still needs to be heard by lower courts. meantime, bay area leaders

are organizing prayer vigils today after i.c.e. agents detained numerous undocumented immigrants over the weekend. one immigrants rights group says agents arrested 11 bay area people. there are concerns more arrests are coming. oakland mayor libby schaaf tried to notify her city ahead of time citing credible sources. she is advising people to consult immigrant resources. a police chase overnight ended near the stanford campus. we do know that someone reported gunshots just before midnight in sunnyva sunnyvale. as police responded they say a car drove away from the scene. officers from sunnyvale, palo alto and mountain view chased that driver. eventually police say they caught up and arrested two people. police say they're still trying to confirm if shots were actually fired. a live look at broadmoor police department in san mateo county. this is near daly city. two people there are dead and a third is injured after a triple shooting. this morning police are looking for that gunman. the shooting happened just
