we are absolutely elated and happy to have our students coming back to school. reuniting the marjory stoneman douglas family, our students and our teachers, this is the best place for everyone to be with their colleagues, their peers, their friends, so they can work o through this difficult process of trying to go from grief to some better state. so it's part of the healing process. and you know, really starts today. i think here at marjory stoneman douglas. >> kerry sanders pointed out's there's going to be additional security. it's kind of a tricky balance, you want the kids to feel safe, but you want them to feel like they are in school. how do you balance that? >> one is, i don't think, the we should turn our schools into prisons and build armed fortresses, but we do need to enhance security. there's, there's a heightened

level of security and law enforcement presence that we will have at this school that will remain for the rest of the school year and into the foreseeable future. so they will see a real significant presence. we're also insuring that our security procedures and protocols within the school continue to be followed. and so forth. so i think there will be enough of a balance that everyone will feel comfortable that it's a new day, a new level of security around marjory stoneman douglas. >> mr. superintendent. the broward county sheriff has made no secret in his disappointment in the security officer who was assigned that day and who he says never went into the school. question for you -- did you know this school resource deputy, scott peterson? and do you feel that the county and the security there let you down? >> yeah. no, i don't know this particular

school resource officer, personally. what i will say is that there's an investigation that's been initiated by the governor and the state. i'm going to wait to see what comes out of that before you know i really passed any judgment. but what i will say about the whole incident is that we had administrators rushing into that building, a couple of them gave their lives to help protect our children. and they were unarmed. they're really true heroes. when we have law enforcement on site on e ca and when there's life-threatening incidents involved, we would expect them to respond appropriately and do everything they can to save our children and our staff. so we'll see what happens with the results of the investigation that comes out. >> broward county superintendent robert runcie, i know it will be a busy and emotional day for you, sir. thanks for your time. >> and thank you and i thank

kristen welker has that part of the story this morning. kristen, good morning to you. >> savannah, good morning to you. our exclusive nbc news reporting is raising new questions about whether more could have been done to prevent russian meddling in the 2016 election. and it comes as the russia probes by the special counsel and by lawmakers on capitol hill are yet again inching closer to the president himself. with the russia investigation intensifying, hope hicks, president trump's long-time aide and communications director, leaving capitol hill looking unfazed after nearly nine hours of testimony. hicks, not answering reporters' questions. but inside, a bold admission, according to the "new york times," hicks says her work for president trump had occasionally required her to tell white lies. the "times" offering no examples, but reporting that hicks insists she never lied on matters relating to the russia probe and hicks answered some questions about the campaign and

transition. but declined to answer questions about her time at the white house, saying she was under orders from the administration not to talk about that period. her testimony or lack of it prompting mixed reaction. >> that's the period of time where we have the most questions for her. >> i think that she's been very forthright and open to all the questions that we've had. >> and this morning, the white house pushing back against a cnn report that special counsel robert mueller's team is asking about mr. trump's business dealings in russia before 2016. as he considered a run. a white house lawyer declining to comment on the specifics, but casting the report as one of many that's been way off base. adding it's best for both parties not to address this in the press. it all comes as nbc news has learned that top-secret intelligence requested by president obama during his last weeks in office, identified seven states where there was substantial evidence that state websites or voter registration systems were compromised by

russian-backed covert operatives prior to the 2016 election. all the state and federal officials we spoke to agree -- no votes were changed and no voters were taken off the rolls. and six of the seven states deny their systems were breached based on their own cyber investigations. overnight, a department of homeland security spokesman disputing nbc's report in a tweet saying it is not accurate, and undermines their efforts. on tuesday, senators pressed the director of the national security agency, admiral mike dgers, aut rsia's ongo interferen in the u.s. rodgers saying president trump has not given him the authority to retaliate against russian hacking operations. and acknowledging. >> we're taking steps, but probably not doing enough. >> why the hell not? what's it going to take? >> i'm an operational commander, ma'am, you're asking me a question that's so much bigger than me. >> as the russia investigation continues to hang over this dimension, the president and first lady are prepared to go to

capitol hill later today where they'll pay their respects to the late reverend billy graham. thank you. on this busy wednesday, a new storm is appearing, bringing another round of soaking rains and flood concerns to areas of the south and midwest. we'll go right to al roker. >> we've got the ohio river going through several states that's just below major flood stage. 70 rivers are at or above mine tore major flood stages. and you can see with all this water, there's nowhere to go, and of course with more rain coming, we are really concerned. we've got flood watches up for 12 million people right now. stretching from texas to kentucky and parts of west virginia. and this system is going to be pushing through. and so we now have a moderate risk of flooding stretching from texas to kentucky. and here's what we're also worried about. we're also looking at anywhere

from double-barrelled storm system that's going to be pushing into the northeast. it starts off with snow, later today, on into tomorrow, bringing tomorrow night, dangerous driving conditions across michigan, heavy rain, cloudbursts, big problems. it continues to make its way through the east and a second storm takes off over the eastern seaboard. friday morning, heavy rain, low visibility, heavy snow developing from buffalo, binghamton, western pennsylvania. we move into friday night, heavy winds along the coast. snow back to the west. rain as well. causing big, big problems so rainfall amounts through saturday, we look at anywhere from three to five inches of rain along the coast. we're also concerned about wind, look at the snowfall totals. anywhere from three toight inches of snow but locally up to 12 inches of snow through western new york and on up into new england. airports if you're traveling thursday and friday, memphis, indianapolis, cleveland, chicago

because it's our first royal event with meghan. >> today, february 28th, 2018. ryan seacrest is fighting back about allegations made by a former stylist. we're hearing from another person who says he witnessed some of that alleged bad behavior. kate snow has more on this. >> reporter: ryan seacrest continues to vehemently deny these allegations, calling a story in "variety," salacious. but we were put in contact with a source that i spoke with by phone last night. that source says he was there, too. and he described some of the sam incidents that hardy has alleged. the man has worked in hollywood for years but does not want his name used because he still works in the industry and fears retaliation. the source, who nbc news has verified worked alongside ryan seacrest, says he saw the star

behave inappropriate at stylist suzie hardy. she would go to tie his shoe and ryan would shove her head near his crotch. >> she's tying my shoe. >> reporter: this video was admitted as a rebuttal. just before an oscar's red carpet special in 2008, the source that worked alongside seacrest said seacrest was being dressed by hardy. the doors to the bedroom opened and seacrest was holding hardy in a bear hug. she yelled, get off of me. she was trying to get away from him. i could see an erect penis in his underwear. the source describes hardy as visibly shaking and says he urged her to talk to human resources. in a letter sent last november and obtained by nbc news, hardy's attorneys said the incident happened in 2009, and seacrest was on top of hardy in a bedroom.

that letter included an allegation that in 2009, seacrest slapped hardy on her e rear-end as they were leaving an e! set. the source says he did not see the slap, but moments after it occurred, hardy told him what happened and showed a welt on her behind. e! not work will look into allegations on seacrest. the investigation found inreceive evidence to substantiate allegations. some say there were other witnesses that dispute hardy's accounts. this morning, ryan seacrest is fighting back, saying in a statement that reads in part, this person who has accused me of horrible things offered, on multiple occasions, to withdraw her claims if i paid her millions of dollars. i refused. adding, i have worked extremely

hard to achieve my success. and i don't take my opportunities for granted. i don't want to accuse anyone of not telling the truth. but in this case, i have no choice but to again deny the claims against me, remind me i was recused of any wrongdoing and put the matter to rest. hardy's attorney responded with his own statement saying, seacrest's words were an attempt to smear the victim and divert attention from her specific and supportable claims. the intense he said/she said is for hollywood to judge. >> it remains to be seen how much this is going to trail him and impact his career. so far, it really hasn't seemed to impact him at all. >> reporter: seacrest says he participated in the e! investigation to demonstrate his innocence. and praise the national reckoning over sexual harassment. i absolutely support this cause unequivocally and applaud all of

counterfeit products from fakeup to electronics is moving online with the rise of more online shopping. and everything sold on websites millions of americans are using every day. this morning, disturbing news that some popular products sold online from top retailers like amazon, walmart, ebay, sears and new egg may be fake. over 47 of the products tested, 20 were counterfeit, according to a new report by the government accountability office, including urban decay makeup, travel mugs and phone chargers. some of the fake charges posed a risk of lethal electrocution. some of the mugs had lead. and the fake cosmetics had cyani cyanide, mercury, lead and rat droppings. >> it's an electrical item, it could catch on fire. if it's a beauty product, it

could have toxic things in it. >> reporter: the makeup looks idea cal. the gao couldn't figure out the difference and had to ask for assistance from the manufacturer to identify the frauds. l'oreal which owns urban decay and yeti, the mugmaker, says they're working with law enforcement to keep customers safe. the products tested by the gao tell nbc news they forbid the sale of counterfeit goods and are taking swift legal action, from counterfeit sellers coming from china and hong kong. but the amount of counterfeit consumer goods is exploding. customs and border patrol seized more than $1.4 billion worth of products in 2016. to protect yourself, retail experts recommend you look before you use it. >> use for flimsy or rushed

e-mail, shopping, banking, netflix, amazon, prescriptions, kids' activities. the average person has 150 online accounts of some sort but uses just 12 passwords, reusing the name one at least ten times. that's a big no-no. >> your password is cracked. todayshow2018. >> charles henderson lives cyber security. to crack my password he used a program that's easily found on the internet. if you can crack that password that quickly, then criminals can do that. >> exactly. >> reporter: in fact, look what we found on the internet. >> what we're looking at is a database of e-mails and passwords that were leaked on the web. >> that's etay mayor. >> reporter: you have tens of thousands of names here. >> there's date bases like this

good wednesday morning. right now it's 7:56. i'm meteorologist kari hall. tracking some rain starting to move closer to the bay area. right now also some snow for some of those higher elevations in far northern california. as we go into the rest of the day we'll start to see some scattered showers for parts of the north bay from lake county starting out with a wintry mix and some snow, down to sonoma and napa counties as well. we'll see it moving into san francisco later on this evening and the rest of the bay area by about 8:00 to 9:00 tonight, so most of the day we'll be dry for areas in the south bay. as we go into tonight the rain continues and becomes a little bit heavier, more widespread and that heavy rain continues throughout the day tomorrow with some gusty winds extending into your weekend with san francisco only reaching 47 degrees. what's happening on the roads, mike. lots of crashes. the south bay crashes are

clearing but we do have one coming into the south bay, southbound 880 is jammed, a multi-car crash blocking just your fast lane around montague expressway right around the great mall. that's a traffic alert from chp. we're looking toward the dumbarton bridge because that has the flat tire being repaired mid span. 92, the san mateo bridge, that crash cleared. that is actually a better drive right now. getting into the san francisco slow southbound 101 down towards spencer avenue, a crash blocks one lane but the speeds show it may have recovered. happening now environmental advocates are gathering outside of the main san francisco library. the plan is to protest as the epa holds a public hearing over repealing the clean power plan which limits emissions from coal power plants. students are back at analy high school in sebastopol in the north bay this morning. the school was closed yesterday after graffiti threatening students and staff was found this week.

at ice headquarters in the city at noon today. good morning. it's 8:26. i'm marcus washington. a major protest is being planned at i.c.e. headquarters as federal agents arrested 50 people in northern california over the weekend. organizers say dozens of attorneys will be on hand for the demonstration. plus it's official. mavericks competition is not happening. that's according to the event organizers. today was the last day mavericks could be held. the waves just wouldn't big enough for the right conditions, really, for that event. this is the second year in a row that the competition has not been held. right now a traffic alert cleared. >> that's right, in the south bay, marcus, we're following it
