a live look at our radar from storm ranger this morning as rain is moving across, look at that, the entire bay area. meteorologist rob mayeda tracking it all. >> staying safe on the roads. >> and really a wet morning commute across the bay area. the impacts the storm could have on your drive. "today in the bay" continues right now. let's start out with another look at our live radar from storm ranger. really tells the story, doesn't it? one of the strongest storms to hit the bay area so far this year. you can almost challenge yourself to find a dry spot in there. i don't think so. thank you for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. full team coverage. we want to begin with meteorologist rob mayeda. right now we are seeing the heavier showers just offshore in san francisco as you just saw on the storm ranger radar approaching the coast.

let's take you outside in san jose. it's wind and rain at 50 degrees right now. oakland. temperatures in the upper 40s. a wind speed of 20 miles an hour and into san francisco a rinse cycle under way. wind speeds 22 with a temperature of 54 degrees. at least it's a mild start this morning. the next batch of heavy rain, our storm ranger scanning atop the mountain giving you the high definition rapid scan updates. the radar around san jose and down into the santa cruz mountains is where the heaviest rain is falling throughout the morning at times up to a third of an inch per hour. hour by hour the first half of the day will have widespread rain. into the evening we'll begin to see things changing over to scattered showers with cooler air aloft, too, that will keep our daytime temperatures down to the mid-50s. even the sun breaks out at times and low snow levels. more on that in a few minute.

here's mike. >> rob, that rinse cycle you talked about, rinse and repeat from your forecast. over here we're looking at the roadways having been washed down so slicker conditions. that's what the green weather index means. we did have a crash reported, the counter commute yet, but a sig alert issued northbound at 680 and brunell. we see slowing but it's slower because the crash is up on the center divide. reports of hydro planing just before the crash happened. now a vehicle overturned there. no major injuries. but to see the slowing in both directions because there are a lot of flashing lights just arrived. this is coming down through pleasanton and sunol. wet roadways but the maze does move smoothly. it's still a half hour. estimate this camera will shake

because of the wind and blurry because of all the soupy conditions. you said it yourself, wow. >> i did. you should see all the people on the roadways. a lot of people travel over the summit as well. they have rock slides, mud slides to contend with there. some major concerns just as the morning commute is getting under way. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live with some of the safety concerns along the highway. rain is coming down. >> reporter: it's blowing sideways right into my jacket. i keep turning around trying to keep it out but really it's going to continue blowing this morning. we see that ponding on the roadway and the rooster tail off the back of the cars. the officer i talk with in the last hour said it was sloppy at

230. they have been doing round robin traffic slowing. that's when they go side to side and zigzag to slow the traffic behind us. they're trying to keep people going at a safe speed but you see some folks really don't mind the conditions. now folks are also probably thinking about some of the rock slides, the mud slides we saw last year when we were walloped by the last winter storm that brought down the mudslide near vine hill road. that has been repaired. you may have also seen some rock netting along the sides of the roadways here. just try to keep the bigger boulders in place when the rain comes. but you will still see pebbles and sand and silt and small rocks on the roadway as they come down, just a natural part of this part of the highway. we can tell you that the chp

officer i talk with in the last hour or so also said that they're starting to hear reports of trees coming down nothing major at this point. if you're caught behind it, it doesn't have to be a big tree to be a big problem. do slow down and given yourself enough time to stop. you can't get what the people in front of will you do as well. >> so true. another look at the radar this morning as we can see here. nbc bay area storm ranger. looking at that map you can see how widespread this issue is. i want to bring in meteorologist rob mayeda to explain this. we really need the rain. >> some places carrying a deficit of a foot of rain. february we had very little rain around the bay area and the totals are interesting when you see them stacking up like this. february last month, the wetter months around the bay area.

you're catching up some this morning. now that said our storm ranger mobile doppler radar showing you another batch at the coast. that's where pete suratos joins us live in marin county as the next round moves in. pete? >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, rob. we were saying it was on and off throughout the morning. it's definitely on right now. you can see the rain coming down behind me here on lucky drive and as you have to know when you're driving on the roads you have to be very careful because of these conditions. i'll show you the video when we were driving in this morning. 101 north you see the rain coming down putting the windshield wipers to work and that's when a lot of people will have to do when they're driving in this area this morning and that goes for the bay area driving on those freeways.

this is after an early morning crash involving a truck and three cars. >> it closed the entire southbound direction for more than an hour. look at that mangled car. it happened south of 7th street. the car was nearly pushed entirely under the big rig. now this is what is amazing about this -- the driver of that car did not suffer serious injuries but had to be panicked there, trapped for some time. the chp says there were no major injuries at all. >> a recent threat had parents on edge this morning. but the superintendent of san jose's alum rock says there is nothing to fear. this comes after a violent threat of made via twitter. just last night the superintendent took an unusual step posting a video message to these concerns. >> i work with the police department. they addressed the matter and concluded there is no imminent danger to any of our schools. >> san jose police now

investigating the threat which suggested violence. the district is asking twitter to investigate. continuing coverage now. the acting mayor of san francisco says he will discuss a new effort to give legal help to i.c.e. today acting mayor mark farrell will join some, saying they will announce an effort to pay for universal representing for those immigrants. more details for you now. there's a brand-new report that was just released at midnight revealing the level of psychological distress many latino parents are feeling including families who are documented. the journal of adolescent health finds 64% of parents surveyed say they worry about family members getting separated. 40% say they avoid getting medical care or help from police or social services because of the recent action and news

reports. almost half of parents say they warn their teenagers to stay away from authorities and to change behaviors hanging out with friends. back to our micro climate weather report. >> we want to check in with meteorologist rob mayeda again tracking the timing of the storm. >> right now we're seeing the widespread rain filling in from san francisco up into the marin county and the north bay and then eventually crossing down. you can see godownpours into sa jose. it's coming down at times at an angle due to the wind speeds of 35 miles an hour. we have the gusty winds and widespread rain in the morning that will change over to scattered showers as we move into the afternoon. those temperatures will stay cool today. tomorrow a chance of showers, coming up in ten minutes.

reaction to dick's announcement or an announcement of its own. no comment. walmart has raised the minimum age of buying guns and ammunition to 21. a lot of companies are trying to figure out their policy going forward. youtube has reportedly taken down a number of gun related videos. one man who runs a youtube channel about military weapons says he's been unfairly treated. >> there's not a whole lot of stuff to watch right now because i've had to disable the content on my channel. right now we're under attack with the shooting in florida. the anti-gunners are in full force. >> that was from the military arms channel on youtube. shares in ford unchanged yesterday. that's not something you see very often particularly with these volatile markets, right? ford says it's ready to test

kissing your cousin or something, too? why do they need your dna? hey, mike. >> we are under a micro climate weather alert this morning. definitely not the weather for dating. >> we have an app for that, too. >> would you like to share an umbrella? >> you can see throughout the bay area the rain is still continuing to come down. rob mayeda is in for kari hall monitoring the situation. it's a combination of wind and rain. we haven't seen a storm this strong since january 8th, the last time we had a storm this strong. we've moved to a new month, we're in march. it feels like january. it will feel more like that as the cooler air starts to spill on into the bay area. cameras bouncing in oakland. it's 49 degrees. wind at 20 miles an hour. into san francisco a combination of wind and rain. 54 degrees currently the

temperature. our storm ranger, from the top of san bruno mountain that is the view looking north of san francisco. now there's an example of standard definition doppler radar. here's what we can provide you here at nbc bay area. showing you rapid scan detail of the downpours moving into the north bay. more intense showers moving through palo alto and where all this moisture is being forced to climb up over the mountains. you see the areas of yellow and orange where we're seeing the heaviest rain at this time coming down. along with gusty winds, let's go to nbc's vianey arana who is live along highway 17 with a look at wind and rain hour by hour forecast. >> reporter: yeah, hour by hour forecast flip-flopping in terms of the win. we see periods where the wind dies down. even though the wind isn't as gusty right now you can see that rain blowing sideways.

what we do get is occasionally a nice gust that kicks up and that's when we really start to notice how cold it is up here as well. now let me take you through the hour by hour wind gusts. if you look at the screen on camera we're showing kind of the future cast. don't be surprised if it flip-flops, rain between 15, 20, 20 plus miles per hour. and if i take it through the lunch hour some of the wind dying down in the north bay but picking up in south bay. we're going from the gustier and throughout the next couple of hours as you continue to see the system passing through. what will happen the south bay will see the wind kicking up. it will go from the north bay to the south bay. for mao it's still windy. keep both hands on the wheel. i have a smaller car so i will be on the way back. the wind will make things feel cooler outside. you can see our high temperatures today only in the mid-50s.

wind future cast as it moves through the bay area, once we pass lunch time scattered showers as opposed to widespread rain, breaks of sunshine, too. as the cooler air arrives this is where the weather gets interesting. a slight chance of thunder, small hail. we'll see more of this and a chance of lowering snow levels as we head to the weekend. today the soggiest of the next three days. tomorrow don't let your guard down for a slight chance of thunder and small hail. saturday snow levels could be as low as 2,000 to 3,000 feet and obviously that's the story we're seeing here to the sierra. blizzard warning in effect. use caution, mike. a couple of key issues to follow. first i want to show you over here reports of a delay.

sideways at times up to about 15 to 30 miles an hour out of the south and southwest this morning. a look at your commute at 54 degrees. the high definition view showing you the downpours across marin county. a bit of a break around redwood city or areas south of san mateo and the rain picks up as you head into san jose and comes down heavy at times on the west slope here. hour by hour the forecast today. transition into scattered showers for the afternoon and cool temperatures outside. not too far off what we're seeing now. now to see how the rain and wind is impacting the commute. a live look. san jose, northbound 101. this is our camera. you can hardly see the traffic because the water is on the lens.

you can make out here closer to me, easier to see the cars. 101 all right right by the weather camera. the rest of the roadway is really light for san jose. also in the tri-valley, the sig alert, the traffic alert by chp at brunell. your left two lanes blocked. what happened there was a box truck, 26,000 pounds that hydroplaned and lost control. both directions are slowing because of the distraction at the divider. the rest of the bay moves nicely. >> major concern during any storm power outages. a live look at the pg&e map showing where there are outages at the minute. we last heard more than 1,000 customers were without power.

"today in the bay's" bob redell is live. we know a lot of people's power is out right now. one of the things they should do in the event of something like this? >> reporter: first and foremost, pg&e did put out some tips. >> if you see a downed power line avoid that. don't go near it. you can still get electrocuted. call the authorities and just stay away. the power is out. battery operated flashlight instead. have a backup phone. either your cell that plugs directly into the wall. the reason being that if for when the power comes back on, when the power comes back on

pg&e turn on each appliance one at a time. >> if you want to know what's happening where you are right now you can download our nbc bay area app. this is free for iphone and android users. so here are the other top stories we're following this morning happening today. jury selection begins with a widow of a gunman in the orlando nightclub shooting rampage. >> authorities arrested nor salman in contra costa county in january of last year. she grew up in the bay area and returned after the pulse nightclub shooting. she is being tried in florida. prosecutors believe she helped plan the attack. the gunman omar mateen, killed 49 people before authorities killed him. classes will be in session at olympic high school in concord where police arrested one student yesterday after they say he had two loaded handguns on campus. they took cortez into custody without incident.

investigators say they found nothing to indicate he was planning violence at the school or that students and faculty were threatened. happening today students at los gatos will prepare to deal with an active shooter. this is scheduled at fisher middle school. the school last held this type of drill in september. happening today b.a.r.t. says its fare inspection team will use new devices to make sure riders have paid. they are tracking down riders who board trains without paying. the technology will let them easily and quickly scan a particular or clipper card to make sure riders have paid. >> the effort to bring a massive new google transit village to san jose enters its next phase. google has been in talks to create a major development. those plans call for space. last night 38 members of an advisory group met for the first

time. a series of nine meetings over the next half year. back to our micro climate weather alert. this is i-80 up in truckee by the scale there. you have to pack the chains if you are planning on heading to the sierra. your window of opportunity may have been yesterday. "today in the bay" is live in that area this morning in south lake tahoe near heavenly resort to show us the wintry conditions. you're all bundled up ready to hit the slopes. >> reporter: i am all bundled up, laura and marcus. good morning from south lake tahoe. the weather conditions here are fairly calm at the moment. it's just really cold and the snow is coming down steadily. last night at about midnight the wind was a lot stronger. that's not the case now. that's good news.

again, fairly calm. the most severe weather conditions are expected to hit later today into early friday morning. winds up to 100 miles an hour. that is certainly going to cause dangerous conditions for anybody on the road. drivers try to come into the area or leave the area so you want to make sure you check all your latest traffic and weather conditions before you head out. and it's probably best to stay off the roads during that time. cal transwill likely shut highways and roadways down as the conditions become more and more dicey. meanwhile for skiers and snowboarders, this is a dream. california has experienced a very dry winter, so this is some much-needed snow. to video about an hour north of lake tahoe which is called truckee near reno. we spoke to a lot of those skiers and snowboarders up there

last night. they were enjoying the slopes. many of them were families from the bay area who decided to make the trip out here before the weather got too dangerous to enjoy the conditions and the fresh snow. let's hear what they had to say. >> we are excited, sledding, so excited. >> snowball fights. >> the vibe in the town is excited, stoked, happy! this is what everyone has been waiting for. we've done our snow dances and working hard. >> reporter: and, again, i want to remind you of the dangerous conditions that we are expect to go see later today into friday morning. so, again, please stay off the roads. you are advised to do that from in that time period to make sure that you don't encounter any of that ice on the road, the heavy snow on the road. we will continue to update you

while we're out here but, again, hopefully that storm will pass and everybody will be okay, they'll be safe, so that folks can enjoy the slopes this weekend. for now reporting live in south lake tahoe anoushah rasta. >> if you can get your reports extended through the weekend, that's the key time to go up. from nbc bay area's storm ranger, both the bay area and the sierra getting hit hard now. the hardest hit areas in the red and yellow here. i want to hand this over to meteorologist rob mayeda for a closer look. we're talking about being inundated with the rain in the bay area. in the sierra all that snow. you're saying we could double what we have. >> it's amazing. normally we do the tahoe report, here's base and no new snow. this is a different story as you're about to see. we're looking at snowfall over the next two to three days that has a chance of matching the base conditions at those ski resorts. look at today through tonight,

two to three feet of snow. fast forward to saturday now, almost 60 to 70 inches of snow. why is that important? the base at squaw valley is 76 inch inches. so you're going to double the snowpack. that's the amazing part of the story. blizzard warning means don't plan on driving today. winter storm warning means -- tomorrow will be challenging. could see road closures at times. back to the bay area, mobile doppler radar. showing you the downpours around the bay area that i think will change over more to scattered showers this afternoon so downpours more widespread. scattered showers at times as we go into the evening and, by the way, friday and saturday could be as low as 2,000 to 3,000 feet in our local hills. mike? >> you talked about maybe doubling the snow or getting there and you might lose your money. over here coming in from the north bay we have a delay for the golden gate ferry. about a half hour delay because

of the wind. the weather causing delays for the ferries. however, no delays for here. none listed at least and running trains at speed. that's good news as you travel through the whole area and an option to avoid the backup. b.a.r.t. will take you under the water without any problems. typical slowing through the maze and down the east shore freeway but very slow here. this is 680 northbound. 680 has your left two lanes blocked for now and hydro planing truck 26,000 pounds of fruit and vegetables and that truck itself has to be cleared and that's why we have the jam right there for 680 as we zoom out. the rest of the pattern a smooth drive but we are looking at the south bay with the build through san jose and a couple of crashes off the shoulder. a quick look at the san mateo bridge. back to you, laura. take it easy. coming up next, new concerns about mud slides in santa barbara county this morning just over a month after the deadly

and right now approaching 6:45. you can see the effect of the weather on your golden gate bridge commute. 54 degrees. you can see our storm ranger high definition mobile doppler radar picking up another round of downpours approaching the golden gate bridge within the next five minutes. mike? >> rob, looking over here north 101 in san jose, you see the water on the lens, clearly slow. we've had a little report of a couple spots of minor flooding in the south bay. in the north bay we have our usual suspects as well and our buddy pete suratos is over there. pete, you're near lucky drive. we often talk about that as well. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, mike. that rain has let up just a little bit. a little different from the last live report. you can see cars driving down here along lucky drive and 101 north. you have some very slick roadways, a slick freeway. it's important to keep your

distance at all times. we showed you some video from earlier. 880 north and the conditions here. very wet right now so be careful while you're on the road. keep your space and avoid hydroplaning or anything of that nature. we'll update you with more information throughout the morning. pete suratos, for "today in the bay." >> pretty soggy out there. thanks so much, pete. 6:46. in southern california people who live below the area where the december wildfires burned are being advised to evacuate due to fears extended heavy rains may trigger damaging mud slides. montecito is among the areas under evacuation warnings. of course, sadly, people died there in a massive mudslide in january. the chp says there are no plans to close highway 101 which was closed for days after the january slides. 6:46 right now, and the president has stunned fellow republicans with a turnaround on

gun control. >> president trump has headline writers reaching for their thesaureses. >> they are dumbfounded says one newspaper. stunned said another. bewildered. president trump appeared to do a 180 on gun control during a meeting with members of congress. take a look. >> take the firearms first and then go forward because that's another system. a lot of times by the time you go to court it takes so long to go to court, to get the due process procedures. i like taking the guns early like in this crazy man's case that just took place in florida. he had a lot of everything. you can do exactly what you're saying but take the guns first, go through due process second. >> take the guns first. the president also said he wanted to raise the minimum age to buy a gun. i want to go back to that meeting. senator dianne feinstein was seated to the right of the president on screen. she offered the assault weapons

evade european and american defensive systems. we will wait for the president to react to that provocation, and we'll update you both on twitter and on facebook. >> sounds good. thank you very much. back to our micro climate weather alert on this thursday morning. taking a live look outside from the city by the bay this morning. you see the gray skies out there. look at that radar. it really says it all. rain inundated the bay area this morning. keeping tabs on the morning commute for you throughout the bay area as well. i want to check in with rob right now. he has a look at that forecast for how long this pretty big, juicy storm is sticking around. >> about six to eight weeks in most instances. downpours, wind, and at times maybe even small hail with some thunderstorms that could come in late today into friday. right now san jose, you see the view over downtown, 50 degrees. wind speeds 15 miles an hour. a bit more gusty around the east bay. oakland, 49 degrees.

winds at 21. the camera is bouncing around. gusty winds. that's the view across the golden gate bridge. it's 54 degrees and keep a close grip on the wheel as we go to the mid span, as you notice here on the radar view, downpours moving back into san francisco. i want to share with you the standard definition radar you usually get in weather apps or we see on websites. this is what storm ranger can do. it gives you the high-definition view of where the downpours are neighborhood by neighborhood across the west side here of san francisco, out by ocean beach. over to oakland you see the downpours there. a bit of a break in the action temporarily in palo alto. that will be changing. the tri-valley, sunol grade commute. you see the downpours there and it's still been a messy drive for wind and rain at times around the santa cruz mountains. some locations could see more than two inches of rain coming down between now and as you head into the evening. wind speeds strongest through

about midafternoon. you see the passage. that should be where the cold front is. the strongest winds likely happening now through about midday. widespread rains through the morning that will have more of a south bay focus for the second half of the morning. as we head to the afternoon may manage sunny breaks. we transition to scattered showers and at times bands of rain. at 7:30 we'll probably see another one. once the cooler rain arrives, things could get interesting. we could see small hail and thunder mixed in. look at the high temperatures. close to 50 degrees which means snow levels close to 2,000 to 3,000 feet possible in the higher hills. saturday turning drier. >> rob, you're talking about more rain coming through school drop-off for some. overall the green highlighting that. taking that weather data, talking about the conditions for your drive. wet conditions all over the bay.

we'll look over at the problem we've had for the tri-valley for quite some time. no updates or changes for the last 45 minutes. north 680 jammed up to bernal. very unusual for the commute. it distracts the southbound commute so you're jammed off the dublin interchange. the south bay, a typical pattern here. around de la cruz, reports are the crash cleared but i still see the flow past the airport and north 87 there must be a new crash there. you're jammed from capital. focused right there. as we move the maps, slowing southbound. 880 from 980 down to right here route 29. that's where we have a crash that still has to be cleared from lanes. looking for an update from chp. oakland already has problems for the nimitz because that camera moves around for the wind and that volume of traffic northbound past the coliseum with taillights here. one of the tough spots. palo alto as far as the volume goes but still the conditions
