discovery meadow park -- san jose it's 7:00 a.m., march 4, 2018. we want to start with a live look at discovery meadow park in san jose. beautiful murals. nice clear skies. very chilly start to your morning. thank you for waking up with us this sunday. we have kept rob very busy this weekend. every few minutes it seems like the weather is changing. we're talking about serious snow in the sierra. >> we talked about it yesterday. we put every weather icon all in one day. hail, sleet, snow, rain, thunder. here is the benefit. look at squaw creek. what an amazing view. that looks like a screen savor. it's 11 at lake tahoe. that snow is not going anywhere.

there's the view of half dome. you can see the view there, fresh coating of snow. for the bay area, it's cold. wet roadways around bay area. temperatures in the 30s. watch out for patchy frost or roadway ice, around the santa cruz mountains. final stop takes us into san francisco where it's 40. we have cold temperatures, low 30s in the north bay. this afternoon, some of the north bay hilltops may see a shower trying to pop up. right there between lunch and 3:00 in the afternoon. chance of showers today, cool temperatures and then temperatures actually climbing as we get back to the start of the workweek. we will talk about chilly mornings and a chance for rain in the full forecast in 15 minutes. >> pack a rain jacket, you might need it. >> north bay hills. >> thank you so much. a life changing experience for a san francisco man buried in an avalanche. he and his wife are talking

about the ski trip that almost cost them their lives. rescuers pulled him out of the snow on friday. he and his wife had just started their day on the slopes when they heard people yelling about an avalanche. he said before he knew what hit him, he was pinned head down in the snow. when he realized he couldn't move, evan says he tried not to panic. >> at that point i tried to kind of slow down my breathing and conserve air and relax. i ended up passing out probably 30 or 40 seconds after that. >> he was buried for about five minutes. he woke up just after this video was taken. he says watching this clip of people saving his life is surreal. his wife was caught in the af r avalanche but she kept her head above the snow and she freed herself. they want people to know that skiers have to take every precaution possible when out there on the slopes. want to show you pictures from a different avalanche yesterday near yosemite. this is a popular skiing

alternative to lake tahoe. 10:00 in the more thaning they do of avalanche prevention work when one hit. pictures posted on social media show the frenzy to make sure no one was trapped or hurt. one couple said they were on a chair lift when it rolled beneath them. >> everything changed quickly when we saw that happen. it was intense. it was mind altering. >> imagine seeing that right beneath your feet. three people were partially buried. they were able to free themselves. several employees were also trapped. it certainly looks like the sierra. but this is the bay area. look at mount hamilton. a dusting of white provided a treat for families. kids throwing snowballs. some making snowmen. many had never seen snow before. >> it's really, really, really fun. i'm never going -- i never had a snow fight before. it's my first snowball fight.

>> his rob mentioned, it's unlikely you will see this today. while it was fun for the little ones, the weather did cause problems on local roads. and up in the santa cruz mountains. there were several accidents, including weather-related spinouts on highway 17. most of the accidents happened along a two-mile stretch. some areas in the santa cruz mountains flooded. the heavy rains led to erosion that cautioned sessions of bear creek road to cave in. we caught up with a woman visiting with oregon who says this is not what she expected from her california vacation. >> super cool. i actually go from oregon to california on friday. and it was warmer there. i came here and i was shivering. >> our recent rains have given our reservoir totals a 1% bump.

moderate to major injuries. a man was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. the cause of the crash is unknown. at this point, rescuers say it does not look like weather was a factor. tough questions. people gather for a town hall about preventing gun violence. >> on the -- this is not enough. >> a congressman heads the house violence task force. dozens came out on what's being done to protect students and teachers. >> i'm a gun owner. i support the second amendment. and i don't think that civilians need assault weapons. the military should have them, cops should have them. civilians don't need them. >> he announced he has 200 co-sponsors from both parties that would strengthen background

checks for gun buyers. >> there's more that needs to be done. it's important we elect the right people. >> that's the husband of congresswoman bgabby giffords. they were in berkeley yesterday to endorse wicks. wicks ran former president obama's campaign in 2008 and 2012. we are learning new details about what led to a police shooting in fairfield. skyranger was over the scene. we brought you this story as breaking news wednesday. officers tried to stop a 22-year-old man near pennsylvania avenue. he ran away. an officer opened fire after he saw him reach for a handgun. investigators discovered that weapon was a replica firearm. the man is in critical condition.

jerusalem and to recognize the disputed city as israel's capital. president trump spent time in florida this weekend. he made jokes that are catching a lot of attention. the president reportedly said he admired how china's president can hold office for life. mr. trump reportedly joked, maybe we will give that a shot. the audience laughed. but mr. trump's words spurred breathless headlines. he attended a press dinner last night. he joked about his son-in-law jared kushner's security clearance which was downgraded this week. on a more serious note, the president's announcement he wants to impose tariffs sent the markets plunging. hear what the commerce secretary has to say on "meet the press" right after "today in the bay." coming up, the olympics are not over yet. the sendoff for the next round of athletes heading to pyeongchang.

time is 7:14. a live look outside. that's downtown san jose. we talked about the chilly temperatures you are waking up to. a chance of showers. rob will be by to tell you where. the olympic games are not over yet. 60 athletes left sfo yesterday morning. they are heading to compete at the paralympics. they signed a message wall wishing them good luck. >> for the most part, it's the same tracks and the same events that they have. the only difference for us is it's modified to our disabilities. >> this year, nbc is increasing its coverage of the paralympic

winter games. watch from march 9th to the 18th on nbc sports. hundreds of thousands of people are without power this morning as that powerful nor'easter continues to pound the east coast. in massachusetts a state of emergency. they are seeing no relief. parts of quincy, massachusetts, still completely cut off. the national guard has been carrying people to safety. >> it's extremely cold in our house. we have no way to heat it. we are shivering. they were getting freaked out. >> at least eight deaths are being blamed on the storm due to trees that have been coming down crushing homes and cars. returning now to our weather coverage. check out this wintry scene just outside the bay area. this was taken in lake county just off highway 75 on cobb mountain. one family switching golf balls for snowballs at black rock golf course. rob, that's just a sampling of what folks are seeing in the sierra. you said they got a huge dumping

of snow. >> we will look at the totals. the sierra, some spots almost double the base they had throughout the entire winter. it's been a relatively dry year in the sierra. that changed over the last three days. squaw valley, 93 inches of snow coming down over the last week. you can see from heavenly down to mammoth mountain, about five to almost seven feet of snow. today, well, the snow has stopped. we have these gorgeous views. resort at squaw creek, it's 7 degrees. that snow is not going anywhere. we will see upper 20s around lake tahoe. pretty view looking back to san francisco. chilly by our standards, close to 40, feels-like temperature, closer to 34 when you combine the wind speed. san francisco close to 40. cooler as you head inland. some of the valleys up towards the north bay, in the mid 30s. spider web is back in san jose. 38 now. we will see highs climbing towards the mid 50s.

north bay valley, cold enough for patchy roadway ice. look out for that, santa cruz mountains, hilltops that experience the sleet and brief snow, next couple of mornings watch out for icing object ro roadway. maybe a few upper 50s around san jose. notice if you got really good vision, you got a few showers for inland spots. slight chance during the heating of the day we could see showers developing over the hilltops. even though the radar is dry right now. the areas we are watching for will be along the santa cruz mountains and hilltops, the north bay, slight chance we might see an isolated shower popping up. nothing like yesterday. most places staying cool but dry as you wrap things up. clear skies overnight. likely monday morning we will see colder temperatures. patchy frost or more patchy ice could be possible for the monday morning commute. rainfall projections as you wrap up the weekend. see the time stamp moving. none of the rain gauges moving.

a better chance of rain it looks like will arrive as we get into wednesday night and thursday. this cold pattern 'em airily will move on. from monday to tuesday, temperatures will climb. then thursday, you see a chance of showers coming on through. probably into early friday. our rain estimates between, let's say wednesday night and early friday morning, a lot less than we just saw. we are looking at most places seeing a quarter inch or less. hilltops closer to an inch of rain. as we head towards next weekend, see the sky clear on out. saturday and sunday next weekend looks warmer and drier. high pressure back in will be the reason why, we think, towards the end of next week. things starting to dry out. if we look at the rainfall estimates midweek through friday, you can see the totals here. nothing like we just saw. we saw three to four days of four inches of rain in the santa cruz mountains and north bay hills. this go around midweek storm, looks to be less than a quarter inch of rain for most of the bay

the ceiling itself feels flimsy as well. it gets worse here in the bathroom. look at the floor. i almost tripped and hurt myself when i first walked in because of pooling water. there's a leak under the sink. a leak. we just checked in. it gets worse. come up here. look at this. that is what appears to be mold along the trim of the bathroom where you are supposed to be bathing. not ideal. the mirror is dirty. it's cruddy in the corners. look at this. this is dangerous. see the lines along the glass? the glass is shattered. that's not part of the pattern. can you hear this? yeah. that's because of jagged glass. welcome to vacation. big tip here. make sure you cross reference reviews on multiple travel sites. maybe we will have more luck at this next popular destination. cancun. i find a great deal on groupon.

we had every weather icon in our catalog -- >> kept you so busy. the weather was changing quickly throughout the bay area. >> a good recipe is the cold canadian air that dropped snow levels. good for producing thunder showers, hail. not as unstable out there today. we will see a slight chance of showers. we have the chilly air around. 40 in emoriville with partly cloudy skies. san francisco, also close to 40. into san jose, in the 30s. look at napa and santa rosa, low 30s. that after yesterday's rain. watch out for patchy ice or frost this morning, especially the santa cruz mountains where you saw snow. highs in the 50s. our best chance for seeing an isolated shower looks to be the north bay hilltops. our temperatures will finally warm into the upper 60s for the bay area. a closer look at that coming up in a few minutes. >> that will be a welcome change. thank you. he was buried alive and now he is talking about it. a san francisco man submerged in

school, nathan and his family battled his growing addiction. >> there will always be re relapses. that doesn't mean you love your child less. >> nathan checked into rehab centers. at 32, he ended up here, a residential rehab facility called center point. >> a lot of the treatment took hold with nathan. this time it was really taking hold. >> six weeks later, nathan left to see the dentist with a support buddy. he never made it. he ditched his buddy and met up with his girlfriend. when he returned to center point, he admitted he had taken five methadone pills. >> it was a saturday. i was at work. >> the next morning, center point staff called nathan's father. >> they said nathan had died of a drug overdose. while he was in the facility. i had just been back from trying

to see him in california. >> for years, he believed what he had been told, that nathan died of an accidental overdose. then a call from a stranger changed everything. >> i knew something was wrong. >> this man is the founder of parent teen bridges, a group that offers support to parents of children addicted to drugs. his son was friends with nathan. >> my son was injured about this. he woke up one morning and went to his friend's room and he was dead with vomit on the bed beside him. >> he spent six months investigating nathan's death. do you think nathan's death was avoidable? >> totally. there's no question. >> california law states rehab centers must send anyone with signs of intoxication to a medical facility unless they have a license and staff trained to treat that person. center point did not. the revelation prompted the father to sue for negligence and

wrongful death. >> he was impaired. >> this woman worked at center point when nathan was a client. two patients reported seeing him under the influence. >> they should have brought him to the hospital to be medically cleared. >> she says while staffers often have good intentions, many are just out of rehab themselves. >> my last high was june 2014. >> she was hired after recovering from a heroin addiction. >> people are not trained in recovery. there's some people who are there that have been in recovery them servi themselves. >> do you think people would be stunned to know who is caring for these patients? >> i was stunned. >> center point's log shows staff called a company vice-president who authorized nathan's return to the program. he is convinced that choice was motivated by money. >> that's the sad part of it. the decisions at the top to keep the bed filled to put profit

ahead of the client. >> no one from center point responded to our requests for an interview. in a deposition, the ceo was asked, would you agree that nathan should not have been kept on the premises after admitting he ingested methadone? she answered no and said she didn't know he was in a state of detoxification. the department of health care services, which oversees rehab facilities, disagreed. documents obtained by nbc bay area showed they cited center point for several deficiencies, including two of the most severe. the agency found center point failed to refer nathan to a higher level of care and perform detoxification services without a detox license. do you think they put business and profit ahead of your son's life? >> absolutely. absolutely. >> at the 253 treatment facilities in the bay area. the state received 305 complaints since 2011. 32 people have died. nearly half of those are still under investigation.

in 2011 during a mass shooting. she and her husband kelly were in berkeley yesterday to endorse buffy wicks for california state assembly. kelly praised wicks for her work on national gun control reform. wicks ran former president obama's campaigns in 2008 and 2012. it's a night of high glamour but stars at the academy awards will be using their fashions to make a political statement on the red carpet. you will see those orange pins. they signify support for gun control. the award show airs two weeks after the deadly shooting in florida. the pins support every town for gun safety. that's a group advocating for stricter gun laws. this isn't first time stars have used fashion to make a statement during this awards season. during the golden globes, many followed an all black dress code to show support for the time's up movement to end sexual harassment. some women couldn't wait to make a statement. more than 100 people

democratic party annual state conventi on4,000 delegates gathered the california democratic state convention. the most important task was to consider candidate endorsements. when it came to governor and u.s. senator, the most important state races this year, no candidate gained enough support. larry, what does it say about the endorsements? >> it's a head scratcher. it's california at its best. speaking of california, that's where party endorsements seem to work best when there is little competition. the minute a real contest emerges, the delegates have a hard time coming together. >> that's the whole point. they didn't. why is this endorsement process so important? when will they get it together? >> bear with me. most of us rarely raise an eyebrow about elections. let's face it. political party activists become engaged long before the election

date. even that applies to primaries. their support can be critical. this is particularly important for california democrats, because whereas republicans haven't won a state wide election since 2006 -- yes, since 2006 -- california democrats, they have an abundance of talent, which takes us to the state party convention. the party endorsement usually gives the candidate. if you get it, an advantage over others in the race, assuming he or she can reach a 60% vote requirement. >> democrats have the talent but they also have support amongst voters. turn to the two most important endorsement endorsements. we are talking about four candidates there. why couldn't they settle on any of the four major candidates? are they that difficult? >> you know, the number of well qualified candidates alone made almost any endorsement almost

second at the convention. check the numbers. 54% for kevin. 37% for feinstein who has been in the u.s. senate for 25 years. he failed to capture the necessary 60%. he performed much better than most expected. once again, it shows you that there's not necessarily a core la correlation and people. >> 60% is the magic number. we are seeing big names. polls that have mentioned public spoe supports them. and yet that's not happening. what does this say about the endorsement process? does it lend credence to the idea that they are not in touch with what the people want? >> clearly, the party activists are much more liberal than the democratic elected. not to mention the electorate at large. the convention results suggest

it's a chilly start to the morning. a neat display of light and shadow across san francisco. see the clouds across the north bay. temperatures closer to san francisco in the 40s. most of the bay area waking up to 30 degree temperatures, partly cloudy skies. san jose right now, 38 degrees with partly cloudy conditions to start off your sunday morning. look at the north bay temperatures in the low 30s. temperatures next couple of mornings will be near freezing. that with the rain or in the case of the hilltops around the santa cruz mountains, mount hamilton, snow and sleet we had, look out for icy roadways today

and for monday morning. despite the fact the clouds look ominous, nothing showing up at least falling under the clouds. you see here on this storm ranger rapid scan loop over last hour. we did have showers overnight. a lot of that started to back off around 2:00 a.m. we have less moisture to work with today. the air higher up is still relatively unstable and during the heating of the day, we will see a slight chance of a shower popping up. maybe around hilltops. notice as we go from morning to building up. i can't rule out a shower or two. maybe along the crest of the santa cruz mountains. through the evening as we lose the heating of the day, the clouds begin to dissipate. we see clearing skies and likely an even colder start to monday more than. maybe upper 20s and low 30s. as high pressure building, the afternoons will trend warmer as we go through the beginning of the week.

the pattern shift we are about to see is high pressure building in, cold trough lifting out monday through early wednesday. then here you go. wednesday night into thursday, this is our next best chance for rain. it doesn't have the same punch as the weather system we experienced over the last three days. periods of rain at times. mainly light rain, maybe into friday. next weekend, high pressure will build back over the west coast. by next saturday and sunday, expecting drier conditions. as you are about to see, rainfall projections of the system wednesday into thursday don't look like a lot. keep in mind the last three days we had four inches of rain in the santa cruz mountains and north bay hills. this go around, probably less than a quarter inch of rain. maybe locally higher in the santa cruz mountains. again, mainly an impact at times for the morning commute. not really filling rain buckets. one of the things you will notice, despite the mornings are chilly, daytime highs are warming up. maybe not so much for san francisco.

areas in the santa clara valley tuesday, maybe wednesday as the clouds thicken, may approach 70. the days will be warmer. then rain wednesday into thursday. then we look like we're due for a dry weekend for a change as we head towards next saturday. >> i feel like we made it through this weekend. so any scattered showers, we will be well prepared. >> after that rain and five to eight feet of snow in the sierra. >> my ears perked up when you said 60s and 70s. these are brave souls taking an ice cold plunge into the san francisco bay. this is yesterday afternoon. love the rainbow tutus. it's the polar plunge. they raised $170,000 for special olympics northern california. the runners who wanted to stay dry were not forced to plunge into the freezing ocean. they were asked to just register as chickens. >> i would have done it. it's for a good cause. >> yeah. you are fearless.
